Abstract:A novel halogen‐free intumescent flame retardant, spirophosphoryldicyandiamide (SPDC), was synthesized and combined with ammonium polyphosphate (APP) to produce a compound intumescent flame retardant (IFR). This material was used in polypropylene (PP) to obtain IFR‐PP systems whose flammability and thermal behavior were studied by the limiting oxygen index (LOI) test, UL‐94, thermogravimetric analysis, and cone calorimetry. In addition, the mechanical properties of the systems were investigated. The results indicated that the compound intumescent flame retardant showed both excellent flame retardancy and antidripping ability for PP when the two main components of the IFR coexisted in appropriate proportions. The optimum flame retardant formulation was SPDC:APP = 3:1, which gave an LOI value of 38.5 and a UL‐94 V‐0 rating. Moreover, the heat release rate, production of CO, smoke production rate, and mass loss rate of the IFR‐PP with the optimum formulation decreased significantly relative to those of pure PP, according to the cone calorimeter analysis. The char residues from the cone calorimetry experiments were observed by scanning electron microscopy, which showed that a homogeneous and compact intumescent char layer was formed. J. VINYL ADDIT. Abstract:A novel intumescent flame retardant: tetra-spirophosphoryl-benzoguanamine (TSPB) containing three constituents was used as a new flame retardant for polypropylene to prepare flame-retardant materials, whose flammability and thermal behavior were studied by the limited oxygen index (LOI), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), in addition whose mechanical properties were investigated in this work. It was found that when the addition of TSPB was 25 wt %, the LOI value of the PP could achieve to 29.5 and pass the UL-94 V-0 rating test. The TGA data showed that TSPB could enhance the thermal stability of PP and effectively increase the char residue formation. The mechanical performance test showed that the addition of TSPB improve the mechanical performances of PP to some extent. Thus, the trinity intumescent flame retardant TSPB is good to modify PP. Abstract:A novel halogen‐free intumescent flame retardant, pentaerythritol spirobisphosphoryl‐dicyandiamide (SPDC), was synthesized and characterized by FTIR, 1H NMR, and 31P NMR spectra. The new flame retardant was used in polypropylene (PP) to prepare flame‐retardant materials whose flammability and thermal behavior were studied by the limiting oxygen index (LOI) method, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and cone calorimetry (CONE). The mechanical properties were also investigated. The results indicated that when the addition of SPDC reached 30 wt%, the material showed both excellent flame retardancy and anti‐dripping abilities for PP. Moreover, the LOI value of the PP‐IFR(30%) was 32.5, and it passed the UL‐94 V‐0 rating test. The CONE results revealed that in PP, SPDC(30%) significantly decreased the peak heat release, total heat release, and smoke relative to their values for pure PP. The morphological structures observed by SEM demonstrated that SPDC could promote the formation of a homogeneous and compact intumescent char layer. Effects of reactive compatibilization on the morphological, thermal, mechanical, and rheological properties of intumescent flame-retardant polypropylene.

Abstract:Flame-retardant polypropylene (PP) samples were in situ compatibilized with maleic anhydride grafted PP. Compatibilization reaction was verified by an IR spectrum and gel content measurements. Electron microscopy images showed that compatibilization could considerably reduce the size of the flame-retardant domains, control the phase morphology, and improve the interfacial adhesion between PP and intumescent flame retardant (IFR) with different IFR loading levels. The limiting oxygen index (LOI) of flame-retardant PP increased to different extents after compatibilization, indicating an improvement in the flame retardancy. Compatibilization enhanced the thermal stability to some extent and remarkably delayed thermal oxidative degradation of flame-retardant PP. For PP containing 20 wt % flame retardant, the temperature at which the maximum weight loss rate occurred was enhanced by about 99 degrees C after compatibilization. The storage modulus and glass transition temperatures were elevated to different extents. Tensile strengths of samples reduced in the presence of flame retardant alone but in the additional presence of compatibilizer were restored to levels similar to those of pure PP. Elongation-at-break values, however, showed IFR concentration-dependent reductions that were less for compatibilized samples. Furthermore, the complex viscosity of a compatibilized PP melt turned slightly smaller, which is favorable to melt processing.

Abstract:In this article, the investigation mainly focuses on the synergistic effect of expandable graphite (EG) and intumescent flame retardants in improving the flame retardancy of polypropylene (PP). The ratio of melamine polyphosphate (MPP) and dipentaerythritol (DPER) has been studied by limiting oxygen index (LOI) and vertical burning test (UL-94) tests. The results demonstrate that the optimal ratio of MPP and DPER in flame-retarding PP was 3/1. Except that, the incorporation of EG into the PP/MPP/DPER system can greatly improve the flame-retardant properties of PP materials. When the content of EG is 10 wt%, LOI value of PP composites reaches 33.2 % and obtains V-0 rating in UL-94 tests. Furthermore, Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR) indicate that the main char-formation process of this system occurs at 350–400 °C. And char residue for PP composites after combustion was systematically analyzed by FTIR and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy spectra. Based on these facts, a potential condensed flame-retardant mechanism was primarily proposed.

Abstract:Intumescent flame retardant polypropylene(PP)/organophilic α-zirconium phosphate(OZrP) compo-sites are prepared by melt-blending process. TGA reveales that it has an increased charred residue compared with PP/IFR systems or pure PP. When the PP matrix contains 25% IFR, the LOI is 33 and UL-94 is V-1 rating. When the PP matrix contains 22.5% IFR and 2.5% OZrP, the LOI is 37 and UL-94 is V-0 rating. Combined with the analysis of charred residue of composites, OZrP is found to be a good synergistic agent in the PP/IFR flame retardant systems.

Abstract:The flammability of polypropylene (PP) brings great fire hazards, so it is of great significance to enhance its flame retardancy. In this paper, a high-efficiency intumescent flame retardant (IFR), composed of ammonium polyphosphate (APP) and poly(piperazine phenylphosphamide) charring agent (BPOPA), was prepared and used to improve the flame retardancy of PP. With the 25 wt% of APP/BPOPA (3:1) addition, the limiting oxygen index of PP composite reached 32%, which could pass a UL-94 V-0 rating. Besides, the peak of heat release rate (PHRR) and total smoke product (TSP) of PP with 25 wt% IFR were declined by 71.8% and 68.9% respectively compared with PP. What's more, the interaction of APP and BPOPA was also explored and the result showed the combination of APP and BPOPA could form a compact and intumescent char layer to restrain the combustion of PP.

Abstract:The synergistic effects of silicotungstic acid (SiW12) as a catalyst in the phosphorus-nitrogen compounds AM-based intumescent flame-retardant (IFR) polypropylene (PP) were studied using the limiting oxygen index (LOI), the UL-94 test, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), real time Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), laser Raman spectroscopy (LRS). The LOI data show that SiW12 added to PP/IFR systems has a synergistic FR effect with an IFR additive named AM. The TGA data show that SiW12 apparently increases the thermal stability of the PP/IFR systems at high temperature (T > 500degreesC). The FTIR results provide the positive evidence that IFR can improve the thermal stability of PP and SiW12 can induce a higher rate of formation of phosphoric acid and its derivatives. The LRS measurements provide useful information on the carbonaceous microstructures. In short, a suitable amount of SiW12 (1.5 wt%) exerts synergistic effects with the IFR by increasing the LOI value and the thermal stability at high temperature and promoting the formation of charred structures on the burning PP surface.

Abstract:Most organic polymeric materials have high flammability, for which the large amounts of smoke, toxic gases, heat, and melt drips produced during their burning cause immeasurable damages to human life and property every year. Despite some desirable results having been achieved by conventional flame-retardant methods, their application is encountering more and more difficulties with the ever-increasing high flame-retardant requirements such as high flame-retardant efficiency, great persistence, low release of heat, smoke, and toxic gases, and more importantly not deteriorating or even enhancing the overall properties of polymers. Under such condition, some advanced flame-retardant methods have been developed in the past years based on "all-in-one" intumescence, nanotechnology, in situ reinforcement, intrinsic char formation, plasma treatment, biomimetic coatings, etc., which have provided potential solutions to the dilemma of conventional flame-retardant methods. This review briefly outlines the development, application, and problems of conventional flame-retardant methods, including bulk-additive, bulk-copolymerization, and surface treatment, and focuses on the raise, development, and potential application of advanced flame-retardant methods. The future development of flame-retardant methods is further discussed.

Synergistic effect of nano silicon and piperazine pyrophosphate/melamine polyphosphate on flame retardancy of polypropylene

Abstract:Journal of Fire Sciences, Ahead of Print. To improve the flame retardant efficiency of intumescent flame retardants, some nano-scale additives as synergists were always added. In this work, nano silicon and piperazine pyrophosphate/melamine polyphosphate into polypropylene was investigated, which was obviously efficient to improve thermal stability and flame retardancy. The optimal synergistic ratio corresponded to 1 wt% SiO2, 10 wt% piperazine pyrophosphate, and 5 wt% melamine polyphosphate. The system passed the UL-94 V-1 classification and had a limiting oxygen index value of 34.5%. It exhibited a decrease on peak heat release rate and peak smoke production rate by 81% and 80%, respectively. Based on characterizations of scanning electron microscope, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, the synergistic mechanism was investigated. A reactive cross-linking network between SiO2 and piperazine pyrophosphate/melamine polyphosphate during burning was formed to enhance the structure of carbon protective layer. Nano silicon acted as a foaming nucleating agent to promote the formation of porous dense carbon layer in intumescent flame retardants during burning. The synergistic strategy of SiO2 and piperazine pyrophosphate/melamine polyphosphate provided new compounded system for the design of polymeric materials with excellent flame retardancy, great thermal stability, and low release of heat and smoke.

Abstract:Aimed at improving the efficiency of bio-based flame retardants, a starch-based, chemical-physical synergistic intumescent and halogen-free flame retardant system has been prepared in polypropylene (PP). Besides, the starch-based flame retardants have been modified via surface hydrophobicity to enhance the interfacial compatibility with PP. Surprisingly, limiting oxygen index (LOI) value of PP composites can reach as high as 33.5% with UL-94 V-0 rating when the total flame retardant content is 30 phr. Definitely, the synergistic effect of starch-based flame retardants and expandable graphite (EG) endows the better flame retardancy and anti-dripping ability of PP, which can be attributed to the conjunct chemical-physical intumescence action in improving the quality of charring layer. Finally, systematic analysis on char residue has revealed the synergistic flame retardant mechanism. This work has opened up a new path for exploiting the bio-based flame retardant with high performance in actual applications.

Abstract:A novel phosphorus-based macromolecular flame-retardant synergist named DPS was designed and synthesized via three steps from 9,10-dihydro-9-oxa-10-phosphaphenanthrene-10-oxide (DOPO), dihydroxybenzophenone (DHBP) and pentaerythritol (PER). The prepared synergist was used in combination with a base flame-retardant (melamine-coated ammonium polyphosphate (APP-M), or aluminum diethylphosphinate (ADP)) to create novel binary intumescent flame retardant (IFR) systems for polypropylene (PP) and polyamide 6 (PA6) matrices. The structure of DPS was characterized by fourier transform infrared (FTIR), phosphorus nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (31P NMR) and gel permeation chromatography (GPC) analysis. The thermal stability and combustion behaviors of the flame-retardant polymer composites were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), limiting oxygen index (LOI), UL-94 vertical burning tests. It was found that with a low fraction of DPS (20-25 wt%), the developed binary IFR systems significantly enhanced the flame-retardant performance of both PP and PA6. The results indicate that owing to the rich phosphorus content and abundant aromatic structures, DPS has synergistic actions with the base flame retardants to scavenge free radicals and promote char formation in the gaseous and condensed phases, respectively. Additionally, the mechanical properties of the PP composites were also evaluated, revealing the mechanical reinforcement effect of the binary IFR, i.e., simultaneous improvement of tensile modulus, ultimate tensile strength and impact toughness. This further demonstrates the effectiveness of the developed IFR formulations in terms of well-balanced flame-retardant performance and mechanical properties.

Abstract:A novel mono-component intumescent flame retardant, named as hyper-branched triazine-piperazine pyrophosphate (HTPPP), is synthesized by using cyanuric chloride, 1-boc-piperazine and phosphoric acid. Chemical structures of HTPPP are characterized by fourier transform infrared (FUR) spectra, P-31 nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), solid-state C-13 NMR, elemental analysis (EA) and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICP-MS). The resulting HTPPP is used alone as an intumescent flame retardant for polypropylene (PP). PP/HTPPP composite can achieve a limiting oxygen index (LOI) value of 30.5% and the vertical burning test (UL-94) V-0 rating at 25 wt% HTPPP loading. Besides, HTPPP is thermally stable with initial decompose temperature as high as 275 degrees C in air atmosphere. The flame retardant mechanism is concluded based on the analysis of the char residue. Abstract:Ferric pyrophosphate (FePP) was added to an ammonium polyphosphate (APP)-pentaerythritol (petol) intumescent flame retardant (IFR) system in polypropylene (PP) matrix, with subsequent investigation into the synergistic effect between FePP and the IFRs. Limited oxygen index (LOI), UL-94 test and cone calorimeter test were employed to study the flame retardance of the synthesized flame retardant PP composites. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and thermogravimetric analysis-infrared spectrometry (TG-IR) were used to study their thermal degradation characteristics and gas products. TG-IR results demonstrate that there is no Fe (CO)(5) produced from PP/IFR/FePP system, which implies that the flame retardant mechanism of PP/IFR/FePP system is in the condensed phase rather than in the gas phase. Real time FTIR and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were used to monitor the thermal oxidative stability and the high temperature performance of the flame retardant PP composites. The real time FTIR spectra show that all peaks around 2900 cm(-1) almost disappear at 380 degrees C for the PP/IFR system, meaning that PP decomposes completely at this temperature. But after the addition of 2 wt% wt% FePP, the peaks still exist till 400 degrees C. XPS shows that the aliphatic carbon atom content in PP/23 wt% wt% IFR/2 wt% wt% FePP (63.8%) is much higher than the one without FePP, and the total oxygen atom content in PP/23 wt% wt% IFR/2 wt% wt% FePP is just 19.1%, while the one in PP/25 wt% IFR is as high as 35.7%. Abstract:Flammability of polypropylene / ethylene-propylene-diene copolymer (PP/EPDM) filled with melamine phosphate (MP) and pentaerythritol phosphate (PEPA) was studied by limiting oxygen index (LOI), UL 94, and cone calorimetry. The thermal degradation of the composites was investigted using thermogravimetric analysis (TG) and real-time Fourier transform infrared spectrum (RT-FTIR), and the mechanical properties of the materials were also studied. It had been found that the PP/EPDM/PEPA/MP composites (PEPM series) showed better flame retardancy than that of the PP/EPDM composites containing MP or PEPA. TG and RT-FTIR Studies indicated that the interaction occurs among MP, PEPA, and PP/EPDM. The incorporation of the flame retardants deteriorated the mechanical properties of the materials. Great enhancement of efficiency of intumescent flame retardants by titanate coupling agent and polysiloxane

Abstract:Modified intumescent flame retardants (MIFRs) and polysiloxane (APID) have been used in combination to enhance the flame retardancy of polypropylene (PP). The IFR system was composed of melamine (MEL), ammonium polyphosphate (APP) and pentaerythritol (PER). Aimed to improve the thermal stability of the IFR and its dispersivity in PP, titanate coupling agent NDZ‐201 was used to modify the IFRs via ball milling. MIFRs and APID have a cooperative effect on the flame retardant properties of PP. With 25 wt.% of MIFR and APID, the flame retardant sample (PPMA) was rated V0 for UL‐94, the LOI value was 34.3%, and the peak heat release rate (PHRR) was reduced by 80% in cone calorimeter test. In addition, APID could improve the compatibility of MIFR with the PP matrix, thereby increasing the mechanical properties of PP blends. The flame retardant effect of APID and MIFR in PP was presented in the condensed phase resulting in a rigid, thermally stable and expanded carbon layer due to different char structures.

Abstract:Three kinds of inorganic particles, zinc borate (ZB), organic montmorillonite (OMMT), and expanded graphite (EG) as synergistic flame retardants, are incorporated into ethylene‐propylene‐diene monomer/polypropylene (EPDM/PP) composites filled with intumescent flame retardants (IFR). The effect of three synergistic flame retardants on the combustion, thermal stability, and mechanical properties of the EPDM/PP/IFR composites are investigated by limiting oxygen index (LOI), UL‐94 test, cone calorimeter test (CCT), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy, mechanical property testing, and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). The results from LOI, UL‐94, and CCT show that the synergistic effect of IFR with ZB and EG is better than IFR with OMMT in the flame retardant EPDM/PP/IFR composites. The TGA results indicate that the thermal stability and char residues of the composites is improved with the addition of inorganic particles, which is attributed to the formation of dense char layers to isolate heat flow. DMA results including storage modulus (G'), loss modulus (G"), and loss factor (tan δ) suggest that the composites with inorganic particles exhibit more rubber‐filler interaction, which limits the movement of the rubber chains.

The limiting oxygen index (LOI), UL-94 test, and cone calorimeter results show that the flame retardancy of IFR-PP is improved significantly by the introduction of La2O3. The results of thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) indicate that thermal stability of IFR-PP is also enhanced. SEM pictures reveal that La2O3 addition improve the formation of a homogenous and compact intumescent char layer on the surface of the composites. The possible mechanism of the synergistic effects between La2O3 and IFR is proposed in the paper.

Abstract:A novel intumescent flame retardant system (IFRs) combines Tri (1-oxo-2,6,7-trioxa-1-phosphabicyclo [2. 2. 2] octane-methyl) phosphate (TPMP) with melamine pyrophosphate (MPOP) and its application in polypropylene (PP) has been investigated. The thermal stability, flammability, and water resistance were studied by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), UL-94 test, and cone calorimetry. TGA shows that pure PP degrades at about 4008C, while sample PP-6 degrades at about 270°C under nitrogen atmosphere. With 30wt% total loading of the IFRs, sample PP-6 passes the UL-94 V-0 test. It can still pass the UL-94 V-0 test after the water treatment. The introduction of TPMP and MPOP strongly decreases the peak heat release rate (PHRR) value of the flame retardant (FR) PP composite. The morphologies of the char residues obtained after cone calorimetry were investigated by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The char residue of sample PP-6 has better structure, which prevents the underlying materials from further decomposing. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was used to further explore the char residues of the FR PP composites. The results show that sample PP-6 has the best char residue, which enhances the oxidation resistance of the char layer.
