Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To study the feasibility of chemo-radiotherapy for early stage breast cancer after breast-conserving surgery(BCS).METHODS:All the cases were Ⅰ,Ⅱstage of breast cancer,106 cases underwent conserving surgery(BCS group)while 60 cases,as a control, underwent modified radical mastectomy(control group),followed by radiotherapy, chemotherapy and /or TAM therapy.RESULTS:All cases were followed up for a median of 53 months. In BCS group,no patient had local recurrence while 1 patient had local recurrence in the control group. The 3-years,5-years survival rates and distant metastasis rates in BCS group and control group were 96.34%(79/82)vs 95.58%(65/68),P=0.957 1;90.24%(37/41)vs 90.47%(38/42,P=0.987 0 and 5.7% vs 5.3%(P=0.977 4)respectively.There were no significant differences between two groups about every previous rate.According to the medical criterion the satisfied with the better shape of the suffered breast was about 96.2%.CONCLUSIONS:Combined chemo-radiotherapy with breast-conserving surgery for early stage breast cancer may achieve not only similar results as traditional mastectomy with the same treatment protocol, but also can keep a better shape of the breast.it may be considered as one of the primary treatment options.
