Education and Identity:How Are Chinese American Writers Affected by Their Received Education?

Abstract:This paper intends to study the interaction between education and Chinese American writers' identity formation by way of examining their literary texts,focusing upon Pardee Lowe's Father and Glorious Descendant(1943),Jade Snow Wong's Fifth Chinese Daughter(1950),Maxine Hong Kingston's Woman Warrior:Memoires of a Girlhood Among Ghosts(1976),Gish Jen's Mona in the Promised Land(1996) and David Henry Huang's FOB(1978).Conducted from the socio-historical,cultural,and psychological perspectives with textual analysis,and built upon such identity theories and models like Minority Identity Development Model(MIDM),Social Identity Theory,and Asian American Model,this paper explores how Chinese American writers' school educational experiences have affected their national,ethnic and cultural identity formation.
