Abstract:Nanostructured metals with a high surface area are of considerable interest for various applications in catalysis, fuel cells, chemical sensors, etc. Among these materials, nanostructured platinum film deserves special attention because of its excellent properties in electrochemical applications. Based on liquid crystal template or hydrothermal-assisted seed growth, several methods have been developed for the preparation of nanostructured platinum film. With the liquid crystal template it is easy to control the size of the porous structure, but it is difficult and time-consuming to implement the liquid crystal template techniques. As for the hydrothermal-assisted seed method, the titanium substrates need to be treated carefully and the process is also time-consuming. Furthermore, the surface area of obtained nanostructured platinum film is only 20 times larger than that of polycrystalline platinum electrode. Recently, electrochemical dealloying method has been exploited in the fabrication of high surface area nanoporous material, which is based on the selective etching of the more active component in a homogeneous alloy obtained via electrodeposition or arc melting at high temperature. We describe herein a facile method for fabrication of nanoporous platinum on glassy carbon electrode at room temperature by electrochemical deposition of PtCu alloy and a following dissolution of Cu in H2SO4 solution containing K2PtCl4 and CuSO4. Figure 1 shows the SEM images of electrodeposited PtCu alloy and dealloyed platimun films. It can be seen that nanoporous platinum film has been formed via dealloying process. From the hydrogen adsorption charge in Figure 2, the rough factor of the nanostructured platinum electrode was estimated to be much more than 500. A good mechanical strength of the nanostructured platinum electrode was proved. The fabricated nanoporous platinum electrodes were also tested for the electroreduction of oxygen and electrooxidation of methanol.
