Abstract:To overcome the biogas inhibition in anaerobic digestion of fish waste (FW), effects of inoculum to substrate ratio (I/S, based on VS) and co-digestion with bagasse on biogas production of FW were studied in batch reactors. I/S value was from 0.95 to 2.55, bagasse content in co-digestion (based on VS) was 25%, 50% and 75%. The highest biogas yield (433.4mL/gVS) with 73.34% methane content was obtained at an I/S value of 2.19 in mono-digestion of FW; the biogas production was inhibited and the methane content was below 70% when I/S was below 1.5. Co-digestion of FW and bagasse could improve the stability and biogas potential, also reducing the time required to obtain 70% of the total biogas production, although the total biogas yield and methane content decreased with the increase in bagasse content in co-digestion. Biogas yield of 409.5mL/gVS was obtained in co-digestion of 75% FW and 25% bagasse; simultaneously 78.46% of the total biogas production was achieved after 10 days of digestion.
Effects of Stirring on Semi-dry Anaerobic Digestion of Pig Dung for Biogas Production

Abstract:[Objective] The research aimed to study the effects of stirring on semi-dry anaerobic digestion of pig dung for biogas production.[Method] Stirring at 200 r/min was set during slow and recessionary phases in semi-dry batch performed at 35 ℃,to research its experimental effects in pig dung anaerobic digestion for biogas production.[Result] The results showed that COD degradative rate was 91.96 % after anaerobic digestion 45 d and biogas production rate was 0.148 ml/kg,but daily biogas yield change was large in fast-production phase.Gas production speed enhanced 1.04 ml/(min·kg),temperature rose,and pH value descended by stirring 5 min in slow-production phase.Stirring 10 min phase was better than 5,15 min for anaerobic digestion in recessionary.[Conclusion] The stirring manner of continuing 5 min and pausing 50 min in a cycle can make biogas production emit in time.
Biodegradation mechanism of biogas production by modified rice straw fermentation

Abstract:Based on the literature on the degradation mechanism and the change of micro-functional groups in the fermentation process of modified rice straw, this study aimed to solve the problems of low biogas production rate and poor stability of the biogas production system. In this work, mathematical equations were developed and combined with duck dung and rice straw mixed raw material to perform a fermentation test. The molecular micro-functional group changes of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin were studied to obtain the optimal ratio of mixed raw materials for fermentation and to explore the optimization mechanism of its fermentation biogas production. Experimental results showed that the optimal ratio of mixed raw materials was 2.8:1, and the inclusion of a suitable amount of Mn2+(concentration of 2 mol × L-1) was able to strengthen MnP activity and improve the ability of white-rot fungi to rupture β-O-4 bonds. A modification pre-treatment via activated carbon-based solid acid was performed, and the experimental group generated 15.8% more cumulative biogas than the control group. The biogas yield reached its peak when 300 g of inoculum was added to the pre-treatment at a concentration of 30%.

Abstract:This study optimized the stirring time of cattle manure (CM)-corn stover (CS) co-digestion to improve Anaerobic digestion (AD) performance. The results showed that the experimental (T2) with the optimum stirring time (15 min/h) determined by computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation achieved the highest cumulative methane yield of 224.17 mL/g. Compared to continuous stirring (T1, 60 min/h) and intermittent stirring (T3, 5 min/h), T2 increased the cumulative methane yield by 18.65 % and 7.11 %, respectively. Additionally, microbial community analysis indicated that the relative abundance of the predominant methanogen Methanosarcina in T2 was increased by 9.56 % and 26.14 % compared to T1 and T3, respectively. Functional prediction by PICRUSt2 revealed that T2 enhanced the hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis pathway, which played a major role in the methanogenesis pathway. In summary, this study provides insights for optimizing the stirring time of AD and plays an important role in improving the methane yield efficiency and reducing energy consumption of biogas projects.

Abstract:The inhibition of volatile fatty acid (VFA) production is an important factor affecting biogas (methane) production in the anaerobic co-digestion systems comprising food waste and sewage sludge. In this study, batch experiments were conducted at medium temperature (36 ± 0.5 °C), during which the biogas production index and material–liquid characteristic parameters of the anaerobic digestion systems containing different concentrations of iron-loaded biochar (Fe-BC) were monitored. The cumulative biogas production data were analyzed using a modified Gompertz kinetic model to determine the effect of the Fe-BC on biogas production in the anaerobic co-digestion system. Studies have shown that addition of Fe-BC does not significantly influence the hydrolysis and acidification stages of anaerobic co-digestion, but does have a significant effect on promoting methanogenesis by alleviating the accumulation of VFAs and improving both the buffer capacity of the system and the efficiency of substrate-to-biogas conversion. When the Fe-BC concentration was 16 g·L−1, the cumulative biogas production reached 329.42 mL·g-VS−1, which was 49.7% higher than the blank group, and the lag period was 3.55 d, which was 42% shorter than the blank group. Mechanistic studies have shown that Fe-BC increased the concentration of coenzyme F420 and the conductivity of the digestate in the co-digestion system, which increased the activity of methanogens in the anaerobic digestion system, thereby promoting methanogenesis.

Abstract:The research on the capability of residue of Pleurotus ostreatus producing the biogas by anaerobic fermentation were tested.The results showed that the total biogas production and utilization of organic matter significantly increased if the residue of Pleurotus ostreatus being adjusted organic load to 6%~8%,C / N to(24~26) /1,initial pH to 7.0~7.5,made digester sludge as inoculum.The biogas production capability was no significant difference between residue of Pleurotus ostreatus and cow ma-nure as raw material.
Impact of Mechanical Stirring and Percolate Recirculation on the Performances of Dry Anaerobic Digestion

Abstract:Dry anaerobic digestion (DAD) is an attractive method for simultaneous organic waste disposal and bioenergy recovery. DAD has the problems of low methane yields, low reaction rates, and easy inhibition due to its limited mass transfer and heat transfer. In this work, two methods of mechanical stirring and percolate recirculation were compared regarding their capacities of improving the mass transfer and enhancing the performances of DAD in batch experiments with sorghum stalks as a substrate. The cumulative biogas yield and system stability were investigated when the stirring linear velocity was 0 cm/s, 22 cm/s, 44 cm/s, 66 cm/s, and 88 cm/s. When the stirring linear velocity was 88 cm/s, the cumulative biogas yield and methane content were highest. The computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation indicated that the shearing force near the stirring shaft was largest. When the linear velocity of the stirring paddle was 88 cm/s, the shearing force at a radial distance close to center was about −140 N/m2. When the ratio of the material stacking height to the reactor diameter (H/D) was 3:2, the AD showed the best performance. A higher material stacking height promoted the contact between the microorganisms and the substrate and enhanced the biogas production. By combining percolate recirculation and mechanical stirring, the cumulative biogas yield increased by 28% compared with the static DAD process because of the promotion of mass transfer in the DAD.

Abstract:Regularly adding biogas slurry into fermentation reactors is an effective way to enhance hydrogen or methane production. However, how this method affects the production of valuable organic acids and alcohols is still being determined. This study investigated the effects of different addition ratios on semi-continuous fermentation reactors using food waste as a substrate. The results showed that an addition ratio of 0.2 increased lactic acid production by 30% with a yield of 0.38 ± 0.01 g/g VS, while a ratio of 0.4 resulted in mixed acid fermentation dominated by n-butyric acid (0.07 ± 0.01 g/g VS) and n-caproic acid (0.06 ± 0.00 g/g VS). The introduction of Bifidobacteriaceae by biogas slurry played a crucial role in increasing lactic acid production. In contrast, exclusive medium-chain fatty acid producers enhanced the synthesis of caproic acid and heptanoic acid via the reverse β-oxidation pathway. Mechanism analyses suggested that microbial community structure and activity, substrate hydrolysis, and cell membrane transport system and structure changed to varying degrees after adding biogas slurry.

Abstract:The improper disposal of biogas slurry will result in significant pollution of the environment. Microalgae-bacteria symbiosis systems can effectively treat biogas slurry while also producing useful biomass. In this study, Chlorella vulgaris (C.V) and indigenous Shinella sp. YHB03 (S.S) were co-cultured and mono-cultured to purify biogas slurry. The inoculation ratio of C.V and S.S in the co-culture was optimized. The enhancement rate was creatively introduced to quantitatively analyze the changes between co-cultures and mono-cultures. The introduction of S.S into the C.V culture increased the carbon emission reduction capacity of the system, improved the microbe's tolerance to biogas slurry, and raised algal cell viability. Biomass production, pollutants removal and value-added products output were significantly enhanced when co-cultured C.V with S.S. And as the inoculation ratio of C.V and S.S increased from 2:1 to 50:1, this synergistic effect increased at first, then dropped, with 20:1 being the optimal. When co-cultured C.V with S.S at inoculation ratio of 20:1, the microalgae cell viability attained 84.84%, the biomass productivity reached 80 mg·L−1·day−1, and the NH4+-N, TP, TOC and IC removal efficiencies achieved 72.2%, 48.3%, 65% and 63.4%, respectively. This study provides an environmentally sustainable strategy for biogas slurry treatment.

Abstract:Abstract Anaerobic fermentation of mixed raw materials is an effective method to solve the single raw material fermentation instability and adjust the carbon to nitrogen ratio during the fermentation process. In this study, manure and straw were used as mixed fermentation raw materials. The effects of mixed raw material types, total solid concentration, inoculum types and inoculation ratio on gas production efficiency were studied. The experimental results show that the total TS has the greatest effect on the biogas gas production effect. The pig manure and rice stalks are used as the mixed raw materials. The total TS is set to 10%. The inoculum is selected from the biogas slurry. The inoculation ratio is 30%. The gas rate is 0. 61 L/(L . d). The influence of four factors on gas production performance is: total solid concentration> fermentation raw material> types of inoculum> inoculation ratio. The test results have certain reference significance for anaerobic digestion of mixed raw materials.

Abstract:In order to explore the effects of adding biochar on biogas production by high solid concentration anaerobic fermentation of livestock and poultry manure and agricultural safety, this study used pig manure, cow manure and chicken manure as fermentation raw materials, and carried out experiments on biogas production by mesophilic temperature anaerobic fermentation with high solid concentration. The changes of cumulative biogas production, biogas production rate, methane (CH4) content, volatile fatty acid (VFA) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) content in three kinds of livestock manure with or without biochar were analyzed. The results showed that the addition of biochar had different effects on anaerobic fermentation of livestock and poultry manure with high solid concentration, increased the content of CH4 and decreased the content of H2S. the addition of biochar provided enough granular surface to absorb a large number of inoculated microorganisms, which shortened the start-up time, increased the biogas production rate of high-solid anaerobic fermentation of livestock and poultry manure, and advanced the peak period of biogas production; reduced the content of VFA, reduced the inhibition of methanogens, so the methane content increased. The addition of biochar had the most obvious effect on anaerobic fermentation of cow manure and chicken manure with high solid content.

Abstract:Pretreatment of activated sludge is an important step in increasing the reaction speed during anaerobic digestion by accelerating the hydrolysis process. It is necessary not only to analyze the changes in the general properties of the sludge before and after pretreatment but also to further analyze and evaluate the sludge structure and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS). In this study, the changes in coking sludge extracts after pretreatments with alkali, autoclaving, and Fe+ autoclaving were analyzed and compared using EPS heat extraction method. Moreover, the methane production potential of the pretreated coking sludge was investigated via biochemical methane potential (BMP) test. The results showed that after alkali, autoclaving, and Fe+ autoclaving, the concentration of protein and polysaccharide in the bound sludge extract accounted for approximately 40% and 28%, 62% and 51%, and 66% and 83% of the total protein and polysaccharide extracted from the sludge, respectively. In the experiment without pretreatment, there is no phenomenon of gas production from coking sludge. According to the BMP test results, Fe+ autoclaving pretreatment showed the highest methane production of 257 mL/gVSS. This study revealed that the analysis of sludge extracts was necessary in assessing the effects of anaerobic digestion pretreatment and methanogenic potential. Moreover, coking sludge showed higher methanogenic potential after Fe+ autoclaving pretreatment.

Abstract:Experiments of anaerobic fermentation for biogas production using pig dung as raw materials were carried out in a self-manufactured biogas digester when the fermented liquid from Chongming Biogas System was used as an inoculation. Results showed that both the yield of biogas and its methane yield were increased when the cultivated inoculation was used. The nutrient of the fermented material can be maintained. The research can lay a foundation for the industrialization of biogas technology.

Abstract:Hydrodynamic shear plays an essential role in the formation, structure, mass transfer, metabolism of microbial community, and consequently the performance of a bioreactor. The present work focuses on an original investigation to study the effect of hydrodynamic shear on the anaerobic biodegradation process in a continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR) equipped with a helical ribbon. The classical Metzner-Otto method was adopted to estimate the mean shear rate and the particle image velocimetry (PIV) was applied to visualize the instantaneous velocity field in the reactor. A constant prefactor of 17.1 was obtained to compute the mean shear rate from the stirring speed of the helical ribbon. An optimal shear rate of 6.8 s(-1) is obtained for a maximal biogas production rate. It is due to two antagonist mechanisms, namely the enhanced mass transfer and the structural change of granules. Intense hydrodynamic shear diminishes the methane content as a result of the accumulation of volatile fatty acids (VFAs). In addition, the noticeable deformation of granules is mainly due to the abrasion rather than compaction of granules. The density of granules remains unchanged while mechanical strength is slightly enhanced after the experiments. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Introduction: Rumen motility is a key element that influences ruminant nutrition, whereas little is known about the effects of rumen contraction duration on rumen fermentation and ruminal microbiome. We previously reported that proper rotation speed of a rumen simulation technique (RUSITEC) system enhanced rumen fermentation and microbial protein (MCP) production. In the present study, different contraction durations and intervals were simulated by setting different stirring times and intervals of the stirrers in a RUSITEC system. The objective of this trial was to evaluate the influences of stirring time on rumen fermentation characteristics, nutrient degradation, and ruminal bacterial microbiota in vitro . Methods: This experiment was performed in a 3 × 3 Latin square design, with each experimental comprising 4 d for adjustment and 3 d for sample collection. Three stirring time treatments were set: the constant stir (CS), the intermittent stir 1 (each stir for 5 min with an interval of 2 min, IS1), and the intermittent stir 2 (each stir for 4 min with an interval of 3 min, IS2). Results: The total volatile fatty acid (TVFA) concentration, valerate molar proportion, ammonia nitrogen level, MCP density, protozoa count, disappearance rates of dry matter, organic matter, crude protein, neutral detergent fiber, and acid detergent fiber, emissions of total gas and methane, and the richness index Chao 1 for the bacterial community were higher ( p < 0.05) in the IS1 when compared to those in the CS. The greatest TVFA, MCP, protozoa count, nutrient disappearance rates, gas productions, and bacterial richness indices of Ace and Chao 1 amongst all treatments were observed in the IS2. The relative abundance of the genus Treponema was enriched ( p < 0.05) in CS, while the enrichment ( p < 0.05) of Agathobacter ruminis and another two less known bacterial genera were identified in IS2. Discussion: It could be concluded that the proper reduction in the stirring time might help to enhance the feed fermentation, MCP synthesis, gas production, and the relative abundances of specific bacterial taxa.

Abstract:Recently,fermentative hydrogen production with organic wastewater or waste becomes a research focus in the field of bio-energy production,for it is a good way of garbage disposal and energy production.The type of bio-reactor is considered to have important effects on both microbial community structures and mass transfer efficiency between biomass and substrates,which could influence the hydrogen production and stability of the process.In this paper,immobilized-and suspended-cell H2-producing systems are compared based on biomass growth in forms of granular,bio-film,gel-entrapped bio-particle.Reactor configurations such as continuous stirred tank reactor,anaerobic sequencing batch reactor,up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket,expanded granular sludge bed,anaerobic packed bed,anaerobic fluidized-bed,hybrid bio-reactor and their impacts on bio-hydrogen production are summarized.Finally,suggestions and perspectives are proposed to provide guidance for further research.
New Steady-State Microbial Community Compositions and Process Performances in Biogas Reactors Induced by Temperature Disturbances.

Abstract:BACKGROUND:The microbial community in a biogas reactor greatly influences the process performance. However, only the effects of deterministic factors (such as temperature and hydraulic retention time (HRT)) on the microbial community and performance have been investigated in biogas reactors. Little is known about the manner in which stochastic factors (for example, stochastic birth, death, colonization, and extinction) and disturbance affect the stable-state microbial community and reactor performances.RESULTS:In the present study, three replicate biogas reactors treating cattle manure were run to examine the role of stochastic factors and disturbance in shaping microbial communities. In the triplicate biogas reactors with the same inoculum and operational conditions, similar process performances and microbial community profiles were observed under steady-state conditions. This indicated that stochastic factors had a minor role in shaping the profile of the microbial community composition and activity in biogas reactors. On the contrary, temperature disturbance was found to play an important role in the microbial community composition as well as process performance for biogas reactors. Although three different temperature disturbances were applied to each biogas reactor, the increased methane yields (around 10% higher) and decreased volatile fatty acids (VFAs) concentrations at steady state were found in all three reactors after the temperature disturbances. After the temperature disturbance, the biogas reactors were brought back to the original operational conditions; however, new steady-state microbial community profiles were observed in all the biogas reactors.CONCLUSIONS:The present study demonstrated that temperature disturbance, but not stochastic factors, played an important role in shaping the profile of the microbial community composition and activity in biogas reactors. New steady-state microbial community profiles and reactor performances were observed in all the biogas reactors after the temperature disturbance.
Assessment of the effects of dry anaerobic codigestion of cow dung with waste water sludge on biogas yield and biodegradability

Abstract:Dry anaerobic digestion has been treated as feasible process for potential renewable energy recovery with nutrient-rich fertilizer and sustainable solid waste management. Dry methane fermentation of undiluted cow manure (CM), waste water sludge (WWS) and their mixtures into different ratios were conducted at 35°C in the laboratory-scale single-stage batch reactors for 63 days. The specific biogas production obtained for the CM/WWS ratios of 1:0, 4:1, 3:2, 2:3, 1:4 and 0:1 were 56.94, 58.51, 61.64, 63.12, 59.30 and 55.39 L/kg, with methane yield were 32.01, 33.14, 35.31, 36.91, 34.76 and 32.63 L/kg respectively. The experimental results showed that the co-digestion with CM/WWS ratio of 2:3 obtained highest total biogas production of 63.12 L/kg, methane yield of 0.328 m3/kgVS and total solid (TS), volatile solids (VS), chemical oxygen demand (COD), total organic carbon (TOC) reductions of 34.24, 54.80, 55.22 and 70.71% compared to the other co-digestion ratios and single digestions. It was also revealed that co-digestion resulted in 3.11-13.99% higher methane gas yields, due to synergistic effect. The synergistic effect is mainly attributed to more balanced nutrients and increased buffering capacity. ©2011 Academic Journals.
