Abstract:This study investigated the effects of palladium nanoparticles (Pd NPs) that were deposited onto a TiO2 film on the simultaneous removal of toluene and ozone byproduct during 254nm ultraviolet and 185nm vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) irradiation. The uniform Pd NPs that were deposited onto the TiO2 film via an electrostatic method showed a high activity for toluene and ozone conversion. Pd NPs with the smallest mean size (1.9±0.7nm) exhibited the highest turnover frequency (TOF). However, the Pd–TiO2 film prepared with an immersion time of 10min exhibited the highest activity for both toluene and ozone conversion because of the relatively small size and high density of the as-deposited Pd NPs. Compared with the direct VUV photolysis and the TiO2/VUV photocatalytic processes, the Pd–TiO2/VUV process exhibited a better performance in degrading toluene over a range of concentrations with a short retention time (5.7s), and 90% of the ozone generated by 185nm VUV was simultaneously decomposed. In addition, approximately 94.1% of the converted toluene was mineralized into CO2 and CO, and only a small amount of degradation intermediates, such as benzaldehyde and formic acid, were detected in the Pd–TiO2/VUV process with a total yield less than 2%.

Abstract:An UV254+185nm lamp was employed to treat gaseous toluene flow.The toluene conversion efficiency under different conditions was discussed,including relative humidity(RH),oxygen level,initial toluene concentrations and retention time.Toluene conversion efficiency increased with the increasing of oxygen level and retention time,but decreased with the higher initial concentration.Moreover,conversion efficiency increased rapidly at first and then decreased slowly while RH increases,with a optimum RH of 40%～50%.When toluene initial concentration was 16.1mg/m3,RH and oxygen level was 40% and 20% respectively,the conversion efficiency of toluene was 82.2% with conversion rate of 0.44mg/(m3?s),while ozone concentration was 131.13mg/m3,benzene and benzaldehyde yielding concentration was 0.086mg/m3 and 0.135mg/m3.The yielding of ozone and intermediate products during phtotodegradation was discussed to probe the degradation mechanism of toluene under UV254+185nm irradiation.Gas phase Toluene can be directly degraded by UV185nm irradiation,but most of it was degraded by radical initialed reactions.

Abstract:Photocatalysis with irradiation of a vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) lamp (VUV-PCO) was used to remove toluene in air. Two parallel reactions with irradiation of a 254 nm lamp (254 nm-PCO) and without TiO(2) (i.e., VUV photolysis) were conducted for comparison. The influencing factors of relative humidity, initial toluene concentration, and air flow rate were investigated. The results showed that VUV-PCO achieved much higher toluene removal efficiency and better PCO durability than 254 nm-PCO under different operating conditions. 82.3% toluene conversion was obtained with 1.8 ppm outlet O(3) concentration in the former, but only 14.5% with 30 ppm outlet concentration of O(3) was obtained in the latter under the conditions of 1% humidity, 50 ppm initial toluene concentration, and 1 L/min flow rate. Energetic photons from the VUV lamp could efficiently destruct toluene directly. O(3) formed from VUV irradiation of O(2) enhanced the toluene abatement by catalytic ozonation and inhibited the recombination of electron/hole pairs and deactivation of the photocatalyst. Photocatalytic Degradation of Low Level Toluene in the Gas Phase

Abstract:Photocatalytic degradation of low level toluene in the gas phase at low retention time (17s-83s) was studied. The effects of the inlet concentration, retention time, relative humidity, ultraviolet wavelength and carrier of the catalyst were investigated, as well as the change of the photocatalytic degradation capability with the load. It was showed that the degradation rate of toluene at low retention time decreased with increase of inlet concentration, and it decreased more significantly at shorter retention time. Within a range of retention time, the degradation of toluene followed with first order kinetics approximately, and the reaction rate constant increased with inlet concentration. The relative humidity affected the degradation rate a little when the inlet concentration was low. The photocatalytic degradation rate when irradiated with low-pressure mercury lamp (254 nm) was significantly higher than that irradiated with black light lamp having same power. The photocatalyst coated on the stainless steel mesh showed higher activity while it was on the mesh with higher number, however it was not as good as the photocatalyst coated on the aluminum plate.
A comparative study on decomposition of gaseous toluene by O3/UV, TiO2/UV and O3/TiO2/UV

Abstract:The degradations of trace toluene (1.0–20ppmv) in the gas-phase by O3/UV, TiO2/UV and O3/TiO2/UV were studied. The effects of the inlet concentration of toluene, flow rate (retention time), relative humidity and ultraviolet (UV) light wavelength on the conversion of toluene in the three processes were examined, respectively. The experimental results showed that the addition of ozone to the photocatalysis process could greatly increase the conversion of toluene. In particular, the deactivation of the photocatalyst at high inlet concentration of toluene was avoided in the presence of ozone. The O3/TiO2/UV process was more efficient than the O3/UV in decomposing toluene in most cases. And the residual ozone concentration in the O3/TiO2/UV process was much lower than that in the O3/UV process. Among them, combined photocatalysis and ozonation (O3/TiO2/UV) was the most prospective process for removing trace volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as in indoor air.
Toluene Degradation over Mn-TiO2/CeO2 Composite Catalyst under Vacuum Ultraviolet (VUV) Irradiation

Abstract:Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are attracting more and more attention among all the air pollutants. Photocatalytic oxidation under vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) irradiation presents a novel and promising process for VOC degradation while also generating ozone as a byproduct. To improve the degradation efficiency of VOCs and remove the residual ozone Mn-TiO2/mesoporous CeO2 composite catalysts were developed and used as a catalyst in a VUV-PCO system for toluene degradation. Characterizations including SEM, TEM, BET, XRD, XPS, Raman and H-2-TPR, were conducted to examine the physical and chemical features of the synthetic samples. Results of a toluene degradation test showed that the Mn-TiO2/CeO2 catalyst had superior activity in removing toluene and ozone to Mn-TiO2 and pure CeO2. The toluene removal efficiencies of the catalysts with a different molar ratio of Ti/Ce were found to be in the order of Mn-TiO2/CeO2 (1:1) > Mn-TiO2/CeO2 (1:2) > Mn-TiO2/CeO2 (2:1). The mineralization rate increased in the order of Mn-TiO2/CeO2 (1:1) > Mn-TiO2/CeO2 (2:1) approximate to Mn-TiO2 > Mn-TiO2/CeO2 (1:2) > CeO2 > VUV photolysis. High ozone removal rates of over 99.9% were obtained for all the doped samples with Mn, resulting in a residual ozone lower than 0.12 ppm. With the use of the scavenger tert-butanol (TBA) and the electron spin resonance (ESR) test, hydroxyl radicals ((OH)-O-center dot) were found to play a significant role in toluene oxidation in the VUV-PCO process and ozone is also involved in the formation of (OH)-O-center dot. Abstract:Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) exists ubiquitously in chemical industries and were regarded as major contributors to air pollution, which should be strictly regulated. Vacuum ultraviolet irradiation coupled with photocatalytic oxidation (VUV-PCO) has been considered as an efficient approach to VOCs removal due to high-energy photons which could break down VOCs directly and be absorbed by photocatalysts to generate free radicals for further oxidation. However, the photochemical transformation mechanisms of VOCs have not been fully revealed. Herein, we systematically analyzed the intermediates using proton-transfer-reaction mass spectrometer (PTR-MS) to explore the transformation mechanisms of toluene degradation in VUV and VUV-PCO processes. VUV-PCO process displayed superior toluene degradation efficiency (50%) and mineralization efficiency (65%) compared with single VUV photolysis (35%) and UV photocatalysis (5%). TiO2 was deeply involved into CO2 generalization by amplifying the advantages of VUV system and further mineralizing the intermediates. In VUV and VUV-PCO processes, O2 participation changed the intermediates distribution by increasing multiple oxygenated products, while the introduction of water contributed to the formation and degradation of most intermediates. A possible degradation mechanism of toluene under VUV irradiation combined with TiO2 was proposed. This study provides a deep mechanistic insight into VOCs degradation by VUV-PCO process.

Abstract:Rutile and anatase mixtures of TiO_2 nanoparticles were prepared through sol-gel method. These nanoparticles show a narrow size distribution around 13 nm. The photocatalytic properties of the samples were tested on degradation of toluene. The effects of photocatalyst amount, irradiation intensity, original concentration of toluene, and the existence of oxygen were systematically investigated. The results showed that the reaction of photocatalytic oxidation of toluene was pseudo first-order. The rate constant of toluene degradation showed linear correspondence with original toluene concentration, and exponentially with irradiation intensity. Photocatalytic reaction rate constant decreased with original concentration of toluene increasing. Oxygen could accelerate photocatalytic reaction. When the original concentration of toluene is 37.6 μmol·L -1 , the optimal amount of photocatalyst is about 0.20~0.30g.

Abstract:As one of the typical volatile organic compounds, toluene is harmful to human health and challenging to decompose effectively with traditional photocatalysts, such as TiO 2 or ZnO. Here, a trace Fe doped TiO 2 /Bi 2 WO 6 composite photocatalyst with abundant oxygen vacancies was successfully synthesized via a hydrothermal method and subsequently impregnation treatment. Fe doped TiO 2 /Bi 2 WO 6 were optimized by adjusting the molar ration of TiO 2 and Bi 2 WO 6 . The obtained Fe (0.1) -TB 2 with only 0.1wt% Fe dopant exhibited superior photocatalytic activity with over 90% toluene removal efficiency after 180 min under visible light irradiation. A series of characterizations reveal that the improved photocatalytic activity of Fe doped TiO 2 /Bi 2 WO 6 can be attributed to synergistic effects between the extension of photogenerated carrier lifetime, the increase of visible light absorption range by narrowing the energy bandgap and the formation of oxygen vacancies. Furthermore, hydroxyl radicals and holes as the key reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the photodegradation reaction were confirmed by electron spin resonance (ESR) experiments. Therefore, introducing Fe-ions into TiO 2 /Bi 2 WO 6 photocatalysts is an effective way to enhance the photocatalytic activities, and the modified catalysts can be considered as a promising material for decomposing toluene and other VOCs.

Abstract:Photocatalysis with vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) irradiation (VUV–PCO) was utilized to destroy air pollutants. Escherichia coli (E. coli) and toluene were chosen as the target pollutants. Two parallel reactions with 254nm UV irradiation (254nm-PCO) and without TiO2 (i.e. VUV photolysis) were also conducted for comparison. Results indicate that VUV–PCO process has a higher efficiency in destroying toluene and inactivating E. coli. In addition, the stability of PCO activity is increased while the byproducts yield is lowered during toluene destruction in the VUV–PCO process. Toluene removal efficiency (TRE) in the VUV–PCO process was more than 5 times higher than that in the 254nm-PCO process. VUV–PCO overcomes some drawbacks of conventional photocatalysis, such as low efficiency and easy photocatalyst deactivation. The destroying mechanism of air pollutants in the VUV–PCO process is greatly different from that of the 254nm-PCO process. The excellent performance of VUV–PCO system may be attributed to the more reaction processes (such as VUV photolysis and catalytic ozonation) and more reactive species (such as active oxygen and hydroxyl radicals) formed to destroy the pollutants.
[Photocatalytic Degradation of Gaseous Toluene by a Photo-Fenton Reaction]

Abstract:In this study, the performance of photo-Fenton reaction on decomposition of toluene was investigated by a flowing column using toluene as a representative of volatile organic pollutants (VOCs). The effects of initial pH, H2O2 concentration, Fe2+ concentration, initial concentration of toluene on degradation of toluene by photo-Fenton reaction were evaluated. Mass spectrometry and gas chromatograph were utilized to detect the products. The results showed that the introduction of UV greatly enhanced the Fenton reaction by improving the generation of hydroxyl radicals. When the initial concentration of toluene was 260 mg x m(-3), the toluene removal can achieve 98% under the following experimental conditions: initial pH = 3.0, H2O2 20 mmol x L(-1), Fe2+ 0.3 mmol x L(-1). Furthermore, no other intermediate except CO2 was detected in the reaction that photocatalytic degradation of toluene in waste gas by the photo-Fenton, which indicates all the degraded toluene was mineralized into CO2.

Abstract:The gas-phase photolytic and photocatalytic reactions of several aromatics and chlorohydrocarbons were investigated. The experimental results revealed that chlorohydrocarbons like trichloroethylene, dichloromethane and chloroform could be degraded through either photolysis or photocatalysis under irradiation of germicidal lamp, and the elimination rate of chlorohydrocarbons through photolysis was quicker than that through photocatalysis. UV light from a germicidal lamp could directly lead to degradation of toluene but could hardly act on benzene. The photodegradation rate for these volatile organic compounds (VOCs) through photolysis followed an order: trichloroethylene>chloroform>dichloromethane>toluene>benzene>carbon tetrachloride, and through photocatalysis followed: trichloroethylene>chloroform>toluene>dichloromethane>benzene>carbon tetrachloride. Besides, a series of modified TiO2 photocatalysts were prepared by depositing noble metal, doping with transition metal ion, recombining with metal oxides and modifying with super strong acid. Activity of these catalysts was examined upon photocatalytic degradation of benzene as a typical compound that was hard to be degraded. It indicated that these modification methods could promote the activity of TiO2 catalyst to different extent. The apparent zero-order reaction rate constant for degrading benzene over SnO2/TiO2 catalyst had the highest value, which was nearly three times as that over P25 TiO2. But it simultaneously had the lowest rate for mineralizing the objective compound. In spite that Fe3+/TiO2 catalyst behaved slightly less active than SnO2/TiO2 for degradation of benzene, the mineralization rate over Fe3+/TiO2 was the highest one among the prepared catalysts.

[Degradation of Toluene in the Gas Phase by Combined Ozone and Photocatalysis].

Abstract:The degradation of toluene (10-80 mg/m3) in the gas phase by combined ozone and photocatalysis was studied. The effect of the inlet concentration, air flow rate and humidity on the degradation efficiency and removal load was investigated. Then the efficiency of combined ozone and photocatalysis was compared with that of photocatalysis. The experiment results indicated that combination of ozone and photocatalysis was far more efficient than photocatalysis in degrading toluene, especially under high-level inlet concentration. When the inlet concentration was in the range of 10-40 mg/m3, the degradation efficiency of combined ozone and photocatalysis was over 90% and dropped linearly and very slowly with the increase of inlet concentration of toluene. The degradation efficiency of combined ozone and photocatalysis was slightly affected by humidity with the efficiency difference less than 2.5%.

Abstract:Vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) photolysis presents a simple and promising method for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) degradation, while the formation of abundant organic and O3 byproducts greatly limits its wide appli-cation. In this study, a bifunctional Mn/TiO2-VM catalyst was developed and combined with VUV photolysis to promote VOCs deep oxidation via simultaneously enhancing its 254 nm UV (hv254) and O3 utilization. Compared with VUV photolysis alone, VUV photolysis well cooperated with catalytic oxidation for deep toluene degra-dation. In addition, most of O3 byproduct was catalytically used for further deep oxidation of organic in-termediates, greatly mitigating secondary pollution. The ability of strong electron transformation and O3 utilization on bifunctional Mn/TiO2-VM greatly enhance the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS, & BULL;OH and & BULL;O2 ), which accelerate the catalytic oxidation performance. This study originally demonstrates a deep VOCs oxidation strategy via VUV photolysis-catalytic synergy and greatly promoted the deep understanding and application of VUV technology.

Abstract:This work presents a new strategy for industrial flue gas purification with TiO2-based photocatalysis technology, which could be achieved by a novel dual-stage circulating photocatalytic reactor. A lab-scale fixed bed reactor is utilized to investigate the performance of photocatalytic toluene degradation and inactive catalyst regeneration by thermal/UV treatment. The relationships between operational conditions and toluene oxidation are surveyed and discussed in detail. The results show that the intermediates could be further removed and decomposed by introducing UV radiation, compared with heat treatment alone. To reveal the photocatalytic mechanism and identify the accumulated intermediates over anatase TiO2, the adsorbed toluene and aromatic intermediates are identified by XPS, in situ DRIFTS, and on-line MS. The aromatic ring and other covalent bonds (C=O, C-O, and O-H) are detected during photocatalytic oxidation. The reaction pathway involving hydrogen abstraction is referred as the dominant pathway for toluene degradation, and ring opening via center dot OH radicals is crucial to make aromatic intermediates change into CO2 and H2O. The results indicate that benzoic acid and benzaldehyde are the main accumulation because of their high reaction energy. A possible reaction mechanism is proposed for toluene oxidation, deactivation, and regeneration of catalysts, which has a significant value for guiding the practical applications.

Abstract:Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are one of the biggest concerns in the ambient environment that have attracted a great number of studies related to its remediation. Vacuum ultraviolet (VUV)-based photocatalytic oxidation (PCO) is a promising technology in controlling VOCs. CeO2 is found to be a promising catalyst for the VUV-PCO technology possessing catalytic capacities in both the photocatalysis and ozonation processes. In this study, three typical kinds of pure CeO2 with various nanostructures were synthesized and creatively applied for VUV-photocatalytic oxidation of toluene. Material characterizations, including BET, SEM, TEM, XRD, Raman, XPS, H2-TPR and DRS, were conducted to characterize different CeO2 samples. Results indicated that synthetic CeO2 samples have a much more remarkable enhancement in degrading toluene compared to commercial ones. Higher COx generation and mineralization rates were obtained with the use of all the synthetic CeO2 samples. Compared to commercial CeO2, the synthetic samples have much better capacity towards removing ozone and the best activity in ozone decomposition was observed in CeO2 Nanorods catalysts. Both the effects of photocatalysis and catalytic ozonation exist in all the CeO2 catalysts. The amount of Ce3+ plays a critical role in both the catalytic activity of photocatalysis and ozonation that higher ratio of Ce3+ leads to better performance in toluene removal. The differences in photocatalytic activity were further explained by the results of electrochemical behaviors of different CeO2 samples which showed varying responses to UV irradiation.

Abstract:The removal of toluene using ultraviolet (UV)-irradiated and nonthermal plasma (NTP)-driven photocatalysts system was investigated. Results indicated that the combination of photocatalyst with NTP (NTP-driven photocatalyst) had much higher toluene removal efficiency (TRE) and better photocatalyst durability, compared with UV-irradiated photocatalysis. The TRE was proportional to ozone consumption rate in the NTP-driven photocatalyst system, in which catalytic ozonation played a vital role in toluene decomposition. Its mechanism of toluene destruction differed from that of photocatalytic oxidation. The active oxygen from catalytic ozone decomposition was the dominant active species in the NTP-driven photocatalyst system.

Abstract:A vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) lamp was used as the irradiation of photocatalysis to enhance the degradation of methylene blue (MB), a model dye compound. In contrast to photocatalysis under 254nm UV irradiation (UV/TiO2), photocatalysis under VUV irradiation (VUV/TiO2) exhibited much higher efficiency in MB degradation and mineralization and needed less TiO2 dosage. The rate constant of MB degradation in VUV/TiO2 (0.0793min−1) is about 4 times of that of UV/TiO2 (0.0205min−1). The MB mineralization rate is also greatly increased from 12.5% in UV/TiO2 to 47.7% in VUV/TiO2 after 60min of irradiation. Multiple advanced oxidation processes including photocatalytic oxidation and VUV photo-oxidation coexist in VUV/TiO2 to substantially produce highly reactive species (such as OH and energetic photons), which is responsible for efficient degradation and mineralization of MB.

Abstract:The photocatalytic degradation of low level methane by vacuum ultraviolet(TiO2/VUV)was investigated.The removal rate of methane by TiO2/VUV first increased and reached a maximum with increase of initial methane concentration,flux,relative humidity(RH)and then kept constant,the outlet ozone concentration hardly changed with initial methane concentration,and it decreased with increase of RH and flux.Addition of H2O2 and NOx was not favorable for the methane removal,but significantly reduced the outlet ozone concentration.Formaldehyde formed as an intermediate when methane degraded by TiO2/VUV,its yield was less than 0.5% and decreased with increase of RH.The removal effect of TiO2/VUV on methane was much higher than vacuum ultraviolet(VUV).
