Relationship between prevalence of myopic poor vision and season of birth in pupils and students in Shanghai

Abstract:Objective To investigate the possible roles of season of birth in the development of myopia and the relationship between them.Methods A total of 4 426 pupils and students(2 539 males,1 187 females) with 7 to 15 years old were examined with random sampling during 2009.All of them were from Changning district,Baoshan district,Jiading district with 1 to 9 grade(1 to 5 grade was primary school,6 to 9 grade was middle school).Data comprised visual acuity,slit lamp examination and questionnaire.If visual acuity was less than 5.0,microcoria were detected with computer optometry after slip lamp examination.The classification of poor vision:Distant vision be and more than 5.0 was normal vision,less than 5.0 was poor vision,4.9 was slight poor vision,at the range from 4.6 to 4.8 was moderate poor vision,be and less than 4.5 was severe poor vision.Results The prevalence of poor vision of pupils and students were 32.87%,39.98%,respectively(χ2=9.14,P=0.00).Overall prevalence of mild,moderate and severe poor vision in pupils and students were 18.50%,12.15%,and 2.22% and 14.96%,19.95%,and 5.58% respectively.There were month variations in myopic poor vision according to birth month,with prevalence highest for July births(40.36%) and lowest for December(25.76%)(χ2=13.05,P=0.00).No difference was found in other month(all P>0.05).Subjects born in summer were more likely to have the tendency of high prevalence of myopia compared with other seasons,but it has no statistically significant difference.Conclusions Myopia in pupil is associated with birth during July.The exact associating mechanism is not known,but might be related with exposure to natural light during the early perinatal period.We should find more effective way to prevent and delay the development of myopia.
