Abstract:OBJECTIVE To study the treatment of mild obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndromes (OSAHS)in children. METHODS Thirty-nine children diagnosed as adenoid on grade III or IV with nasal endoscopy and/or with history of sinusitis and/or rhinitis were diagnosed as OSAHS by polysomnography (PSG).They were divided into two groups. Twenty-five were treated with local steroid nasal spray for two to three months; 2 children with chronic sinusitis were appled with antibiotics for five days. The rest 14 children without any medication were in control group. All children were recorded for height and weight; their parents were inquired for their clinical presentation. RESULTS There were no distinctive differences between groups(P>0.05)in age, disease course, BMI, adenoid hypertrophy, accompanying nasal problems and clinical questionnaire scoring. Three- month follow-up showed significant statistical distinction (P<0.05)in snoring, sleep disturbance and frequent arousal, nasal obstructive moth-breathing, and nasal discharge between groups. No significant distinction (P>0.05)was found pre-and post-questionnaire in control group. CONCLUSION Pharmaceutical application is the primary treatment of mild OSAHS in children with accompanying adenoid hypertrophy and/or nasal problems. Surgery should be taken into account if no obvious improvement after three months’ conservative treatment.
