Abstract:Multi-agent systems are ubiquitous in the world. Recently, multi-agent systems have received increasing attention from mathematics, physics, engineering sciences, and social science communities. This paper firstly introduces several fundamental concepts and then reviews several representative models of multi-agent systems, including the Boids model, Vicsek model, Couzin-Levin model and its invariants, and various complex dynamical networks. Based on these models, it further investigates the dynamical behaviors of multi-agent systems, such as consensus, convergence, adaptation, and consensus decision-making. Moreover, it briefly reviews the main progress in the control of multi-agent systems. Finally, it looks ahead into some important research topics on multi-agent systems, with regard to modelling, analysis, and control.

Foundations and Trends® in Systems and Control

Abstract:Recent years have witnessed a trend to use networked multiple autonomous agents to accomplish complex tasks arising from space-based applications, smart grids, and machine learning. Such systems are referred to as multi-agent systems, where a global objective is achieved via the local interactions among the agents. The recent two decades have witnessed a rapid development of MASs in automatic control, but their root can be traced back much earlier. This paper reviews the research progress of MASs in past years. After briefly introducing the basic concepts and definitions, we discuss agents’ dynamic models, including both linear and nonlinear models, describe different cooperating tasks, such as consensus, coordinating tracking, formation control, distributed average tracking, distributed estimation, containment control, surrounding control, and distributed optimization. We introduce various research issues for MASs, including time-delays, noise or disturbance, quantization, connectivity maintenance, and event-triggered control. We present different MAS control algorithms, including proportional control, proportionalintegral control, adaptive control, model predictive control, passivity-based control, and nonsmooth control, and their applications in multi-robot systems, sensor networks, smart grid, machine learning, social networks, and many-core microprocessors.

Abstract:The introduction of the full paper discusses relevant matters and then proposes the new design mentioned in the title,which we believe is more effective than previous ones and which is explained in sections 1 and 2.Their core consists of:"In order to improve the flexibility,robustness and adaptability for multi agent system in dynamic and uncertain environment,SIMAS architecture is introduced to design and model swarm-intelligence based multi agent system.This architecture applies swarm intelligence theory to non-swarm multi agent system.SIMAS is established by top-down task partition and bottom-up task allocation,and the threshold model of swarm-intelligence theory is used to achieve self-organized task allocation." Simulation experiments are carried out on multi-robot pursuing platform;their results,presented in Figs.3 through 6,and their analysis preliminarily show that our work is indeed effective.

Abstract:In practice, the dual constraints of limited interaction capabilities and system uncertainties make it difficult for large-scale multiagent systems (MASs) to achieve intelligent collaboration with incomplete local relative information. In this article, a review is conducted on the recent development of MASs intended for intelligent control, including consensus problem, formation control, and flocking control. Based on the limitations of the interaction level and the constraints of the individual system level, the published results on intelligent control are categorized into limited sensing-based control, event-based control, pinning-based control, resilient control, and collaborative control under system constraints. Also, the applications of intelligent control for MASs are presented, especially for robotics, complex networks, and transportation. Finally, a discussion is given about the challenges and future directions of research in this field.

New development of the multi-agent system theory and application is reviewed, which includes the framework, the coordination and cooperation between individual agent, and the application of multi-agent system. The important topics for the future research on multi-agent technology are also pointed out.

Abstract:Social insect colonies present a highly structured social organization with the fact that they can accomplish complex tasks in spite of the simplicity of their individuals. Swarm intelligence receives high attention in recent years. Stigmergy is an important mechanism for swarm intelligence. This article deliberately studies animal swarm intelligence and their stigmergy mechanism, and applies these principles to multi-agent system study. Firstly, we establish a stigmergy agent model, which is a general architecture, based on stigmergy mechanism and animal task allocation method. Then extended stigmergy architecture is put forward based on Stigmergy Agent architecture, adding direct contact between agents to general stigmergy architecture, which extends the stigmergy application domain. At last we introduce swarm intelligence based multi-agent system, and put forward improved bipartite graph to analysis the multi-agent organization architecture. Some application research directions are also discussed in this article.

Abstract:Cooperative control of multi-agent systems involves the coordination and collaboration of multiple intelligent agents to achieve common goals or tasks. This field finds extensive applications in robotics, intelligent transportation systems, the Internet of Things, and unmanned systems, garnering substantial attention from both academia and industry. Moreover, it serves as a fundamental requirement for intelligent interaction and human-robot collaboration, offering crucial support for machines in perceiving their external environments. Over the last decade, notable strides have been made in this domain. Consequently, this paper conducts a comprehensive review of recent advancements. Initially, this paper delineate the backdrop of cooperative control in multi-agent systems, followed by an exploration of the research's progression. Subsequently, various methodologies for formation and collaboration are introduced, with an in-depth discussion of advanced cooperative control algorithms for multi-agent systems. Lastly, this paper provides a prospective outlook on the future direction of multi-agent cooperative control.

Abstract:The number of distributed energy components and devices continues to increase globally. As a result, distributed control schemes are desirable for managing and utilizing these devices, together with the large amount of data. In recent years, agent-based technology becomes a powerful tool for engineering applications. As a computational paradigm, multi-agent systems (MASs) provide a good solution for distributed control. In this paper, MASs and applications are discussed. A state-of-the-art literature survey is conducted on the system architecture, consensus algorithm, and multi-agent platform, framework, and simulator. In addition, a distributed under-frequency load shedding scheme is proposed using the MAS. Simulation results for a case study are presented. The future of MASs is discussed in the conclusion.

Abstract:We present an overview of formation control for multi-agent systems. Multi-agent formation cooperation is important to accomplish assigned tasks more efficiently and safely compared to a single agent. For the way information flows between agents, we divide the available results into communication-based topologies as well as vision-based formation controls. Then, we summarize the problem formulation, discuss the differences, and review the latest results on formation control schemes. Lastly, we give research recommendations for multi-intelligent agent controls in a certain period in the future.

Abstract:In this paper, we mainly review the topics in consensus and coordination of multi-agent systems, which have received a tremendous surge of interest and progressed rapidly in the past few years. Focusing on different kinds of constraints on the controller and the self-dynamics of each individual agent, as well as the coordination schemes, we categorize the recent results into the following directions: consensus with constraints, event-based consensus, consensus over signed networks, and consensus of heterogeneous agents. We also review some applications of the very well developed consensus algorithms to the topics such as economic dispatch problem in smart grid and k -means clustering algorithms.

Abstract:Design, study and management of Urban Traffic Systems are increasingly difficult and expensive as existing configurations are multiple and complex. The main goal of UTS (Urban Traffic System) is to allow the users to achieve their trips in the network in a reasonable time and with a sufficient safety level. As a modem distributed intelligent technology, Multi-agent system has advantages of others in urban traffic management and control. Many researchers study in this area and a lot of fruits have been achieved in recent years. In this paper we investigate existing multi-agent system application in urban traffic management. Our work shows that these applications involve in traffic modeling and simulation, traffic signal control, congestion and incident management, traffic routing, etc. we make a primary appreciation about their merits and disadvantages, and put forward suggestions for the building of an integrated UTS.
