Abstract:The internal oscillation-mixing in TiBaCaCuO thin-film microbridge junctions has been studied at liquid nitrogen temperature. The TIBaCaCuO thin-film microbridge junctions were fabricated by the wet-etching technique. As TIBaCaCuO superconducting material is very sensitive to magnetic fields, it is crucial to use a magnetic shielding system in the experiments. In the presence of a magnetic shielding system, we obtained a -37 dB mW sensitivity for a TIBaCaCuO Josephson internal oscillator-mixer which is close to that of a YBaCuO Josephson internal oscillator-mixer [1-3].
An Analog of Optical Rabi Oscillation in Superconducting Josephson Circuits

Abstract:In cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED), the key physical systems include Fabry-Pérot cavity resonators and multilevel cold atoms. Since ultra-strong electromagnetic interaction between photons and quantized cavity modes occurs in cavity QED, many novel quantum optical effects such as optical Rabi oscillation, quantum collapse/revival of atomic-level population and atom-field quantum entanglement can be realized in such quantum microcavities. As is known in quantum optics, these schemes can be generalized to circuit QED, which is a circuit analog of cavity QED. Fundamental devices in circuit QED are superconducting coplanar waveguide microwave resonators and mesoscopic Cooper-pair boxes. Here, the coplanar waveguide resonator with photons stored can be identified as a resonant cavity and the Cooper-pair boxes with large electric dipoles play the role of multilevel cold atoms. Thus, all the quantum optical effects in conventional cavity QED can also be exhibited in the present superconducting circuit QED system. We consider the theoretical working mechanism of superconducting charge qubits based on tunable Josephson junction coupling. It can be found that an analog of optical Rabi oscillation in Cooper-pair boxes can be achieved by tuning an applied external magnetic field. Time evolution of energy levels in a Cooper-pair box, which is manipulated by a time-dependent magnetic flux through its Josephson-junction ring, is studied within the framework of time-dependent quantum mechanics.

Abstract:Josephson devices have demonstrated the capability to work as harmonic mixers at terahertz frequencies. Low temperature devices, in particular Nb–Nb point contacts have proven particularly successful. However, practical applications of these devices have been limited by the need of utilizing liquid helium. To overcome this limitation we have investigated the use of high-Tc devices. In this paper, we report mixings up to the 154th harmonic at zero-bias in a series of YBa2Cu3O7−δ (YBCO) grain boundary Josephson junctions. We have integrated a meander series of three bicrystal YBCO Josephson junctions with a log-periodic antenna. When properly operated, this configuration allows to reach a harmonic number much higher than what possible with a single junction. This shows that the mixing performance benefits from the synchronous operation which also results in an improvement of dynamic range. We believe that the integration of a higher number of phase-locked junctions may further improve the mixer’s performance. Future studies should investigate the effect of higher number of junctions on the mixer performances, as well as the effect of the meander length.

Abstract:We report on THz emission measurements and low temperature scanning laser imaging of Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8 intrinsic Josephson junction stacks. Coherent emission is observed at large dc input power, where a hot spot and a standing wave, formed in the “cold” part of the stack, coexist. By changing bias current and bath temperature the emission frequency can be varied over a wide range of 350–780 GHz; the variation matches the well-known Josephson-frequency relation. The linewidth of radiation, recently measured with an integrated superconductor-insulator-superconductor (SIS) receiver, is as narrow as 6 MHz, much smaller than expected from a purely cavity-induced synchronization. Thus, an additional mechanism seems to play a role. Some scenarios, related to the presence of the hot spot, are discussed.

Abstract:A frequency mixing system including microwave coupling and intermediate frequency (IF) measurement arrangements is designed. In lieu of liquid nitrogen, a pulse tube cryocooler is used to cool the whole system. With YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7 /Yttrium stabilized zirconia (YBCO/YSZ) bicrystal Josephson junction as the mixing element, 36th harmonic frequency mixing at the 8 mm waveband is obtained.

Abstract:Two high-Tc superconducting (HTS) YBa2Cu3O7-delta (YBCO) grain boundary (GB) Josephson junctions in series as a harmonic mixer is investigated. The research shows that the mixer consisting of two series YBCO Josephson junctions has a larger harmonic number than that with only one junction in heterodyne mixing at zero-voltage bias. One of the advantages of the series-Josephson-junction mixer is that the total critical current is improved without sacrificing the sensitivity of the junctions in the array that makes the mixer easier to get more microwave induced-steps required by larger harmonic number. Furthermore, the underdamped YBCO GB series-Josephson-junction mixer operated at zero-bias voltage, where the zero-order Shapiro step exists, achieves mutual phase locking of the junctions in the array, resulting in an excellent mixing performance. Thus, the series-underdamp-Josephson-junction mixer with zero bias is predominant and compact in terahertz (THz) application due to its excellent performance and no de bias supply.

Abstract:Using intrinsic Josephson junctions in Ba2Sr2CaCu2O8+x single crystal, harmonic frequency mixing at 8 and 3 mm wavebands was successfully demonstrated at liquid nitrogen temperatures with harmonic numbers up to 68 and 50 respectively. The dependences of intermediate frequency output on the local oscillator power and dc bias were carefully studied.

Abstract:We have designed and experimentally implemented a circuit of inductively coupled superconducting charge qubits, where a Josephson junction is used as an inductance, and the coupling between the qubits is controlled by an applied magnetic flux. Spectroscopic measurements on the circuit are in good agreement with theoretical calculations. We observed anticrossings which originate from the coupling between the qubit and the plasma mode of the Josephson junction. Moreover, the size of the anticrossing depends on the external magnetic flux, which demonstrates the controllability of the coupling.

Abstract:Using a high T(c) superconducting grain boundary Josephson junction, harmonic mixing experiments in the mm waveband were carried out, aiming at as large a harmonic number and as high a signal frequency as possible. The dependencies of intermediate frequency output on dc bias, harmonic number, frequency of local oscillator (LO), and other parameters were carefully studied. Until now, our best result was the mixing between the signal at 95 GHz and the 105th harmonic of LO at about 900 MHz. Preliminary experiments using a high T(c) harmonic mixer and phase-locking loop were tried to stabilize the frequency of a mm wave source.

Abstract:Since the discovery of the unconventional copper-oxide high-transition-temperature superconductors (HTS), researchers have explored many methods to fabricate superconducting tunnel junctions from these materials for both superconducting electronics operating at the practical temperature of liquid nitrogen (77 K) and for fundamental measurements essential for testing and guiding theories of these remarkable superconductors. The difficulty is that the traditional estimate of the superconducting coherence length is very short and anisotropic in these materials, typically ~2 nm in the a-b plane and ~0.2 nm along the c-axis. The coherence volume encloses very few superconducting pairs, so even the presence of small scale inhomogeneities can locally disrupt superconductivity unlike in conventional superconductors. Therefore the electrical properties of Josephson junctions are sensitive to chemical variations and structural defects on atomic length scales, thus to make multiple uniform HTS junctions, control at the atomic level is required. In this letter, we demonstrate very high-quality all-HTS Josephson superconducting tunnel junctions (both Josephson and quasiparticle tunneling) created by using a 500 pm diameter focused beam of helium ions to direct-write tunnel barriers into YBa2Cu3O7(YBCO) thin films. With this method we demonstrate the ability to control the barrier properties continuously from conducting to insulating by varying the irradiation dose. This technique provides a reliable and reproducible pathway for the scaling up of quantum mechanical circuits operating at practical temperatures (~77 K) as well as an avenue to conduct superconducting tunneling studies in HTS for basic science.

Abstract:In this letter, we demonstrate for the first time the creation of Josephson-like superconducting nanojunctions using a thermal scanning probe to directly inscribe weak links into microstrips of YBa2Cu3O7-x (YBCO). Our method effectively reduces the critical current (Ic) over an order of magnitude. The resulting nanobridges exhibit clear evidence of Josephson effects, of SNS-type junctions, as shown by both the DC and AC Josephson effects. This approach provides a novel and flexible method for scaling up quantum mechanical circuits that operate at liquid nitrogen temperatures. Additionally, it offers a promising pathway for modifying properties of the junctions in-situ and post fabrication.

Abstract:In this paper, we report the successful fabrication and characteristics of the Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ intrinsic Josephson junctions. To study the microwave influence of these intrinsic junctions, harmonic mixing was carried out in the millimeter waveband at temperature ranging from 20K to 77K. Up to 68 harmonic mixing in the 8 millimeter waveband and 56 in the 3 millimeter waveband were clearly observed. The dependence of the intermediate frequency output on the temperature, the signal power and the local oscillation power were studied, which shows some unexpected features.

Abstract:There is a heated debate on the Josephson effect in twisted Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+x}$ flakes. Recent experimental results suggest the presence of either anomalously isotropic pairing or exotic $d$+i$d$-wave pairing, in addition to the commonly believed $d$-wave one. Here, we address this controversy by fabricating ultraclean junctions with uncompromised crystalline quality and stoichiometry at the junction interfaces. In the optimally doped regime, we obtain prominent Josephson coupling (2-4 mV) in multiple junctions with the twist angle of 45$^\circ$, in sharp contrast to a recent report that shows two orders of magnitude suppression around 45$^\circ$ from the value at 0$^\circ$. We further extend this study to the previously unexplored overdoped regime and observe pronounced Josephson tunneling at 45$^\circ$ together with Josephson diode effect up to 50 K. Our work helps establish the persistent presence of an isotropic pairing component across the entire superconducting phase diagram.
Self-aligning fabrication and DC characterization of Nb/AlOx/Nb superconducting Josephson junctions

Abstract:Superconducting qubit systems are one way to implement large-scale quantum computations. Nb/AlOx/Nb superconducting Josephson junctions were fabricated using a planar process as the groundwork for fabricating reliable qubits. The junction area was formed by a self-aligning technology, which effectively protected the device and reduced the fabrication complexity. A low temperature system was constructed to characterize the Josephson junctions with automatic generation and acquisition of signals. The I-V characteristics of the Josephson junctions were measured at different temperatures with an observed jump at the niobium superconducting gap voltage of 2.85 mV. The critical currents of the Josephson junctions were measured at different temperatures, which agree well with the theoretical result of Ambegaokar and Baratoff.

Abstract:Many superconducting technologies such as rapid single flux quantum computing (RSFQ) and superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) rely on the modulation of nonlinear dynamics in Josephson junctions for functionality. More recently, however, superconducting devices have been developed based on the switching and thermal heating of nanowires for use in fields such as single photon detection and digital logic. In this paper, we use resistive shunting to control the nonlinear heating of a superconducting nanowire and compare the resulting dynamics to those observed in Josephson junctions. We show that interaction of the hotspot growth with the external shunt produces high frequency relaxation oscillations with similar behavior as observed in Josephson junctions due to their rapid time constants and ability to be modulated by a weak periodic signal. In particular, we use a microwave drive to pull and mix the oscillation frequency, resulting in phase locked features that resemble the AC Josephson effect. New nanowire devices based on these conclusions have promising applications in fields such as parametric amplification and frequency multiplexing.
