Abstract:The thermal reduction of N2O by CO mediated by the metal-free cluster cations [Si2Ox](center dot+) (x= 2-5) has been examined in the gas phase using Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance (FT-ICR) mass spectrometry in conjunction with quantum chemical calculations. Three successive oxidation/reduction steps occur starting from [Si2O2](center dot+) and N2O to form eventually [Si2O5](center dot+); the latter as well as the intermediate oxide cluster ions react sequentially with CO molecules to regenerate [Si2O2](center dot+). Thus, full catalytic cycles occur at ambient conditions in the gas phase. Mechanistic aspects of these sequential redox processes have been addressed to reveal the electronic origins of these unparalleled reactions.

Abstract:The thermal gas-phase catalytic reduction of N2O by CO, mediated by the transition-metal nitride cluster ion [NbN](+), has been explored by using FT-ICR mass spectrometry and complemented by high-level quantum chemical calculations. In contrast to the [Nb](+)/[NbO](+) and [NbO](+)/[Nb(O)(2)](+) systems, in which the oxidation of [Nb](+) and [NbO](+) with N2O is facile, but in which neither [NbO](+) nor [Nb(O)(2)](+) react with CO at room temperature, the [NbN](+)/[ONbN](+) system at ambient temperature mediates the catalytic oxidation of CO. The origins of the distinctly different reactivities upon nitrogen ligation are addressed by quantum chemical calculations.
Theoretical Investigation for the Reaction of N2O with CO Catalyzed by Pt-Graphene

Abstract:To find an efficient catalyst to catalytic conversion of hazardous gases maybe the important way for solving environmental problems. We performed the first-principles density functional theory (DFT) to investigate the CO oxidation by using N2O as an oxidizing agent over an Pt-Graphene catalyst. The results indicated that CO oxidation by N2O on Pt-Graphene may occur via two pathways: (1) Adsorption of N2O followed by CO and (2) Adsorption of CO followed by N2O. Although the CO was more likely to adsorb on the Pt-Graphene than N2O, but when the Pt site was first covered by the CO, the higher barrier energy (20.28 kcal/mol) would limit the reaction to react. However, the N2O molecule was first decomposed on the Pt-site yielding the N-2 and O-Pt-Graphene, which was an active species for the CO oxidation. Thus, control of the adsorbing molecules over Pt-Graphene might be a key factor for the activity of the catalyst, and this may open new avenues in searching for oxidation of CO at an economical cost.
Combined Experimental-Theoretical Study of the OH + CO → H + CO2 Reaction Dynamics.

Abstract:A combined experimental-theoretical study is performed to advance our understanding of the dynamics of the prototypical tetra-atom, complex-forming reaction OH + CO → H + CO2, which is also of great practical relevance in combustion, Earth's atmosphere, and, potentially, Mars's atmosphere and interstellar chemistry. New crossed molecular beam experiments with mass spectrometric detection are analyzed together with the results from previous experiments and compared with quasi-classical trajectory (QCT) calculations on a new, full-dimensional potential energy surface (PES). Comparisons between experiment and theory are carried out both in the center-of-mass and laboratory frames. Good agreement is found between experiment and theory, both for product angular and translational energy distributions, leading to the conclusion that the new PES is the most accurate at present in elucidating the dynamics of this fundamental reaction. Yet, small deviations between experiment and theory remain and are presumably attributable to the QCT treatment of the scattering dynamics.
One New Channel for the Reduction of NO During Gasification Condition: an Insight from DFT Calculations

Abstract:NCO is an important nitrogen-containing intermediate in coal combustion systems. This work reports the heterogeneous reaction of NCO+NO under gasification conditions using density functional theory (DFT) calculations at the M06-2X/6-311 G(d) level. The initial carbonaceous surface is represented by an armchair model. Under gasification conditions, NCO can be incorporated into the char surface and H2O has greater reactivity as compared to CO2. The optimal paths with five products (Pro1-5) are obtained by analysis of the reaction energy and the highest energy in the transition state (HETS). The results demonstrate that, compared with Pro 3 and Pro 4, the reaction paths of Pro 1 and Pro 2 possess lower HETS, which means that these reactions are more likely to occur. As for Pro 5, its highest value of HETS among the five products and the most unstable configuration signify that it is far from the expected product. Subsequently, we propose the reaction mechanism based on the Chemkin calculations. NCO+NO reaction can not only occur in the gas phase, but also can heterogeneously at the char surface. It can occur without external energy input for Pro 1 and Pro 2, indicating it will be one of the NO reduction channel under gasification conditions. The release of CO2 is more favorable than the release of CO. CO2 can be eliminated during the reactions and consequently provides good environment for N-2 removal with low energies. This work will provide some new understanding of the NO reduction under gasification condition.

Abstract:Air-staging combustion is the widely-used low-nitrogen combustion technology. In this process of NOx reduction, the role played by CO resulted from the air-staged combustion cannot be ignored. In this study, quantum chemistry method is used to investigate the effects of the CO on the NOx generation/reduction and on the char surface. Theoretical calculations indicate that CO is involved in nitrogen fixation during the migration and transformation of N. During the oxidation of N-containing char, CO increases the binding energy of N of pyridine with adjacent C atoms, which is not conducive to the N precipitation. During reduction of NOx by char, CO decreases the desorption energy barrier of N-2 and promotes NO heterogeneous reduction. On the other hand, CO promotes the re-embedding of N in generated NO into the char to form char-N. XPS experiments are carried out for the coal char samples after the air-staged combustion. The experimental results show that high CO concentration is conducive to retention N. When the excess air coefficient (alpha) is 0.8, the increase of N-6 content is 7.2% larger than that of alpha = 0.9. This work discovers the nitrogen fixation of CO, enriches and expands the understanding of the role of CO. (C) 2021 Energy Institute. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Carbon monoxide (CO), as one of the major gaseous product in the oxy-fuel combustion boiler, is found to exert great influence on nitric oxide (NO)-char reactions. Unfortunately, the detailed mechanism of CO enhancement still remains obscure. In this work, starting from the armchair model with embedded nitrogen, we propose some updated mechanisms with details at the molecular level that can describe the role of CO through energetic and kinetic evaluations based on the combination of density functional theory (DFT), transition state theory (TST) and Chemkin calculations. The preferred pathways are identified with 54 intermediates and 68 transition states. The addition of CO to the surface carbyne site with C-down mode is the most favorable and triggers the low-temperature desorption of CO2 via CC bond dissociation due to its low barrier of approximately 40 kJ/mol. One important role of CO is to react with the surface oxygen atom in the species C(NO) to clean the surface. More specifically, the energy barrier for nitrogen exposure reduced from 311.8 kJ/mol to 243.4 kJ/mol if the aromatic armchair edge is clean, and further reduced to 211.8 kJ/mol with the existence of nearby carbine type site. In addition, N2 desorption, is sensitive to, and largely facilitated by, the presence of CO. The results are of great value to interpret various reported experimental phenomena, including but not limited to, the small effect of CO at high temperatures, the initial NO reduction temperature at char surface, and the important impact of CO on the reaction activation energy.

Abstract:N2O is the main gaseous pollutant in circulating fluidized bed (CFB) combustion. Density functional theory (DFT) of quantum chemistry was used to theoretically study the role of CO interaction with N2O on the char surface in this paper. The rate parameters were calculated based on the transition state theory (TST) for kinetic analysis. The armchair configurations with six aromatic ring clusters were selected as the carbonaceous surfaces. This paper identifies a novel redox reaction pathway for N2O pre-adsorption on the char surface. By calculating the difference in activation energy between N2O-CO homogeneous and char catalyzed N2O-CO heterogeneous reduction, it is concluded that the char surface provides an active site for N2O reduction by CO and significantly reduces the activation energy for N2O abatement. In oxy-fuel CFB combustion, localized surface C-CO2 gasification of the char causes high concentrations of CO to enrich and defend the char surface, creating a Stefan flow that prevents O-2 gas from approaching the char surface, which makes CO pre-adsorption possible. The reaction mechanism of the heterogeneous reduction on the char surface is discussed more comprehensively in terms of both N2O pre-adsorption and CO pre-adsorption conditions, which also enriches the mechanism of N2O abatement during CFB combustion.

Abstract:The CO activation by low-valent group 14 catalysts encompasses the rupture of varied covalent bonds in a single transition state through a concerted pathway. The bond between the central main group atom and the hydride in the complex is elongated to trigger the formation of the C–H bond with CO accompanied by the concomitant formation of the E–O bond between the complex and CO to lead the corresponding formate product. Prior studies have established that besides the apolar nature of CO , its initial interaction with the complex is primarily governed by electrostatic interactions. Notably, other stabilizing interactions and the transfer of charge between catalysts and CO during the initial phases of the reaction have been ignored. In this study, we have quantified the non-covalent interactions and charge transfer that facilitate the activation of CO by group 14 main group complex. Our findings indicate that electrostatic interactions predominantly stabilize the complex and CO in the reactant region. However, induction energy becomes the main stabilizing force as the reaction progresses towards the transition state, surpassing electrostatics. Induction contributes about 50% to the stabilization at the transition state, followed by electrostatics (40%) and dispersion interactions (10%). Atomic charges calculated with the minimal basis iterative stockholder (MBIS) method reveal larger charge transfer for the back-side reaction path in which CO approaches the catalysts in contrast to the front-side approach. Notably, it was discovered that a minor initial bending of CO to approximately initiates the charge transfer process for all systems. Furthermore, our investigation of group 14 elements demonstrates a systematic reduction in both activation energies and charge transfer to CO while descending in group 14.

Abstract:A comprehensive molecular simulation study on heterogeneous reaction mechanisms of NO with nitrogen-containing char is carried out using density functional theory. NO chemisorption and subsequent possible reaction pathways are proposed. Geometries of reactants, products, stable intermediates and transition states are optimized at B3LYP/6-31G( d ) level. It is found that NO molecule chemisorption with its bond axis parallel to the edge line of nitrogen-containing char is a weakly exothermic process. The N-O bond in NO molecule tends to dissociate after chemisorption. N 2 and CO are desorbed when NO molecules are chemisorbed with the formation of N-N bond. N 2 desorption is exothermic, while CO desorption is endothermic. So we conclude that N 2 is the dominant product from interaction between NO and nitrogen-containing char.

Methods: All studied reactions were characterized along the reaction coordinate obtained with the intrinsic reaction coordinate (IRC) methodology at the M06-2X/6-31 g(d,p) level of theory. Gibbs free energy in toluene was computed using electronic energies at the DLPNO-CCSD(T)/cc-pVTZ-SSD(E) level of theory. Vibrational and translational entropy corrections were applied to provide a more accurate description of the obtained Gibbs free energies. To better characterize the changes in the reaction coordinate for all reactions, the reaction force analysis (RFA) has been employed. It enables the partition of the reaction coordinate into the reactant, transition state, and product regions where different stages of the mechanism occur. A detailed characterization of the main non-covalent driving forces in the initial stages of the activation of CO 2 by low-valent group 14 complexes was performed using symmetry-adapted perturbation theory (SAPT). The SAPT0-CT/def2-SVP method was employed for these computations. Charge transfer descriptors based on atomic population using the MBIS scheme were also obtained to complement the SAPT analyses.
Dynamics of the reaction CH2I + O2 probed via infrared emission of CO, CO2, OH and H2CO

Abstract:The reaction CH2I + O2 has been widely employed recently for the production of the simplest Criegee intermediate CH2OO in laboratories, but the detailed dynamics of this reaction have been little explored. Infrared emission of several products of this reaction, initiated on irradiation of CH2I2 and O2 (∼8 Torr) in a flowing mixture at 308 or 248 nm, was recorded with a step-scan Fourier-transform spectrometer; possible routes of formation were identified according to the observed vibrational distribution of products and published theoretical potential-energy schemes. Upon irradiation at 308 nm, Boltzmann distributions of CO (v ≤ 5, J ≤ 19) with an average vibrational energy of 32 ± 3 kJ mol-1 and OH (v ≤ 3, J ≤ 5.5) with an average vibrational energy of 29 ± 4 kJ mol-1 were observed and assigned to the decomposition of HCOOH* to form CO + H2O and OH + HCO, respectively. The broadband emission of CO2 was simulated with two vibrational distributions of average energies (91 ± 4) and (147 ± 8) kJ mol-1 and assigned to be produced from the decomposition of HCOOH* and methylene bis(oxy), respectively. Upon irradiation of samples at 248 nm, the emission of OH and CO2 showed similar distributions with slightly greater energies, but the distribution of CO (v ≤ 11, J ≤ 19) became bimodal with average vibrational energies of (23 ± 4) and (107 ± 29) kJ mol-1, and branching (56 ± 5) : (44 ± 5). The additional large-v component is assigned to be produced from a secondary reaction HCO + O2 to form CO + HO2; HCO is a coproduct of OH. The branching between CO and OH is (50 ± 5) : (50 ± 5) at 308 nm and (64 ± 5) : (36 ± 4) at 248 nm, consistent with the mechanism according to which an additional channel to produce CO opens at 248 nm. Highly internally excited H2CO was also observed. With O2 at 16 Torr, the extrapolated nascent internal distributions are similar to those with O2 at 8 Torr except for a slight quenching effect.
Quasi-classical trajectory study of the HO + CO → H + CO2 reaction on a new ab initio based potential energy surface.

Abstract:We report extensive quasi-classical trajectory calculations of the HO + CO -> H + CO, reaction on a newly developed potential energy surface based on a large number of UCCSD(T)-F12/AVTZ calculations. This complex forming reaction is known for its unusual kinetics and dynamics because of its unique potential energy surface, which is dominated by the HOCO wells flanked by an entrance channel bottleneck and a transition state leading to the H + CO2 products. It was found that the thermal rate coefficients are in reasonably good agreement with known experimental data in both low and high pressure limits. Excitation of the OH vibration is shown to enhance reactivity, due apparently to its promoting effect over the transition state between the HOCO intermediate and the H + CO2 product. On the other hand, neither CO vibrational excitation nor rotational excitation in either CO or OH has a significant effect on reactivity, in agreement with experiment. However, significant discrepancies have been found between theory and the available molecular beam experiments. For example, the calculated translational energy distribution of the products substantially underestimates the experiment. In addition, the forward bias in the differential cross section observed in the experiment was not reproduced theoretically. While the origin of the discrepancies is still not clear, it is argued that a quantum mechanical treatment of the dynamics might be needed.
Quantum Chemical and Kinetics Calculations for the NO Reduction with Char(n): Influence of the Carbon Monoxide

Abstract:The effect of CO during the NO heterogeneous reduction on the carbonaceous surface has been studied using density functional theory (DFT) at the M06-2X/6-311G(d) level of theory. The zigzag model with pyridinic-N embedded in the aromatic ring clusters was selected to model the nitrogen-containing char (char(N)). The rate coefficients for the key reaction steps were computed by the canonical variational transition-state theory (CVT), providing a deeper understanding of the NO reduction process. The calculations show that the most stable intermediates for NO chemisorption involve interactions with the previously adsorbed CO moiety. Schematic energy profiles for each favorable adsorption route were obtained in order to elucidate the mechanisms for N2, CO2 and N2O releases. In the presence of CO, the emission of CO2 in the NO reduction is available at low temperatures, indicating that CO enhances CO2 release. The promoting action of additional CO is mainly reflected in a reduction of the energy barrier with its concomitant increasing of reaction rate. The different results drawn from CVT provide direct insight into the limitation of the conventional transition state theory (TST), which deserves more attention in further theoretical research.
Catalytic Reaction Mechanism of NO-CO on the ZrO2 (110) and (111) Surfaces

Abstract:Due to the large population of vehicles, significant amounts of carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and unburned hydrocarbons (HC) are emitted into the atmosphere, causing serious pollution to the environment. The use of catalysis prevents the exhaust from entering the atmosphere. To better understand the catalytic mechanism, it is necessary to establish a detailed chemical reaction mechanism. In this study, the adsorption behaviors of CO and NO, the reaction of NO reduction with CO on the ZrO2 (110) and (111) surfaces was performed through periodic density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The detailed mechanism for CO2 and N2 formation mainly involved two intermediates N2O complexes and NCO species. Moreover, the existence of oxygen vacancies was crucial for NO reduction reactions. From the calculated energy, it was found that the pathway involving NCO intermediate interaction occurring on the ZrO2 (110) surface was most favorable. Gas phase N2O formation and dissociation were also considered in this study. The results indicated the role of reaction intermediates NCO and N2O in catalytic reactions, which could solve the key scientific problems and disputes existing in the current experiments.

Abstract:Exploring the characteristics of NO formation during ammonia-coal co-combustion is crucial for achieving clean combustion. O-2/CO2 atmosphere is an effective way to achieve low nitrogen combustion of pulverized coal, but the effect of O-2/CO2 atmosphere on NO formation characteristics of ammonia-coal co-firing is still unclear. This work used high-temperature furnace experiments to investigate the conversion characteristics of fuel-N in ammonia-coal co-combustion under CO2 atmosphere and conducted quantum chemistry calculations to investigate the molecular pathways of fuel-N oxidation. The experimental results showed that the higher temperature and oxygen concentration results in earlier occurrence of the peak and completion of NO in ammonia-coal co-combustion. Compared to N-2 atmosphere, CO2 has an inhibitory effect on NO generation in ammonia-coal co-firing and the degree of CO2 inhibition on the formation of NO per unit mass gradually decreases with increasing the temperature. The theoretical calculation results showed that CO2 reduces the energy barrier of the rate determining step for ammonia-N oxidation by about 133.81 kJ/mol, promoting the conversion of ammonia-N to nitrogen oxides. However, CO2 also has a certain degree of inhibitory effect on the coal-N oxidation, increasing the energy barrier of the rate determining step for NO generation from coal-N oxidation. The kinetic results showed that when the temperature is higher than 1673 K, CO2 has a more obvious promotion effect on ammonia-N oxidation and inhibition effect on coal-N oxidation, but a more significant inhibitory effect on coal-N oxidation, so that the CO2 atmosphere can inhibit the generation of nitrogen-containing products in ammonia-coal co-combustion to a certain extent.

Abstract:Background The role of CO and adsorption sequence of CO and N2O in the adsorption and reduction of N2O on char was investigated based on density functional theory (DFT) at the M06‐2X/6‐311G(d) theoretical level. This study lays a foundation for reaction mechanisms of the influence of CO on heterogeneous N2O reduction on char. Results Zigzag and armchair models were used as char models. The first adsorption of CO increases the limiting‐step energy barrier of the reaction by 44.5 kJ⋅mol–1 than first adsorption of N2O for zigzag char. However, the adsorption sequence does not affect for armchair char. The rate‐limiting steps of the overall reaction for zigzag and armchair char models occur in the stages of N2O adsorption and N2O reduction, respectively. The introduction of CO has little effect on the N2O adsorption stage but increases the energy barrier of the N2O reduction stage. During the reduction of N2O on coal char, the zigzag char releases greater heat than armchair char; moreover, zigzag char has a much lower activation energy than armchair char. Conclusion In the simultaneous presence of CO and N2O, the char model prefers to adsorb N2O. The rate‐limiting step of the two char models is located in different reaction stages, and CO mainly affects the N2O reduction stage. The presence of CO hinders the reduction of N2O on the surface of both zigzag and armchair char models. The rise of temperature can promote the reduction of N2O by char. Abstract:To reduce CO 2 emissions from thermal power, gradual substitution of coal by ammonia has been widely considered. However, co-firing of ammonia and coal has the risk of increasing NO x emissions. Moreover, the combustion of hydrogen-rich carrier ammonia can generate H 2 O, which affects the conversion paths of N in ammonia-N/coal-N. Therefore, it is necessary to study the oxidation mechanism of N during ammonia-coal co-combustion under an H 2 O atmosphere. In this study, the NH/char/O 2 co-combustion system, in the presence of OH, was constructed by density functional theory. The molecular mechanism of the oxidation of amino groups into NO, HNO, and N 2 O, with the participation of OH, was explored. Combined with wave function analysis, the promoting effect of OH on the oxidation of ammonia-N and coal char-N into N oxidation products was clarified. The energy barrier values of ammonia oxidation to HNO and char oxidation to NO could be reduced by 52.32 and 75.72 kJ/mol, respectively, compared with those without OH participation. By coupling with the kinetic results of transition state theory (TST), it was concluded that the participation of OH was more conducive to the oxidation of ammonia to NO, and its formation rate is higher than that of HNO or N 2 O in the study temperature range. Furthermore, this work revealed the molecular path of HO 2 formation in the NH/char/O 2 co-combustion system with the participation of OH, and obtained the necessary factors and temperature conditions for its formation (higher than 1673 K). The above results are conducive to understanding the characteristics of NO x generation during ammonia-coal co-combustion, which can provide theoretical guidance and reference for the development of N conversion mechanism of ammonia-coal co-firing.

Abstract:N-Heterocyclic Olefin (NHO) with high electronegativity at the terminal carbon atom was found to show a strong tendency for CO2 sequestration, affording a CO2 adduct (NHO-CO2). X-ray single crystal analysis revealed the bent geometry of the binding CO2 in the NHO-CO2 adducts with an O-C-O angle of 127.7-129.9 degrees, dependent on the substitute groups of N-heterocyclic ring. The length of the C-carboxylate-C-NHO bond is in the range of 1.55-1.57 angstrom, significantly longer than that of the C-carboxylate-C-NHC bond (1.52-1.53 angstrom) of the previously reported NHC-CO2 adducts. The FTIR study by monitoring the v(CO2) region of transmittance change demonstrated that the decarboxylation of NHO-CO2 adducts is easier than that of the corresponding NHC-CO2 adducts. Notably, the NHO-CO2 adducts were found to be highly active in catalyzing the carboxylative cyclization of CO2 and propargylic alcohols at mild conditions (even at ambient temperature and 0.1 MPa CO2 pressure), selectively giving alpha-alkylidene cyclic carbonates in good yields. The catalytic activity is about 10-200 times that of the corresponding NHC-CO2 adducts at the same conditions. Two reaction paths regarding the hydrogen at the alkenyl position of cyclic carbonates coming from substrate (path A) or both substrate and catalyst (path B) were proposed on the basis of deuterium labeling experiments. The high activity of NHO-CO2 adduct was tentatively ascribed to its low stability for easily releasing the CO2 moiety and/or the desired product, a possible rate-limiting step in the catalytic cycle.
