Abstract:It is shown that a whistler wave can parametrically decay into another whistler wave plus a kinetic Alfven wave. The parametric coupling occurs due to the electrostatic properties of the kinetic Alfven wave. Corresponding growth rate and threshold condition are obtained.

Abstract:The interaction between a magnetized ion and two monochromatic shear Alfven waves propagating obliquely to an ambient magnetic field is investigated both analytically and numerically. According to the Hamiltonian of this system, the invariant of motion at the lowest order and the half-island widths at the corresponding resonances are obtained analytically using the Lie transformation method. It is shown that these theoretical results agree with the numerical ones from the Poincare surface of section. The regular motions from the invariant and the transition to stochasticity due to resonance overlapping are demonstrated. Compared to the case of a single wave, there may be a lower stochastic threshold in the multiple-wave problem.

Abstract:Because of its electrostatic properties, the rate of the parametric growth of the kinetic Alfv\'en wave [Alfv\'en wave with $\ensuremath{\lambda}\ensuremath{\equiv}\frac{{{k}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}}^{2}{{c}_{s}}^{2}}{{{\ensuremath{\omega}}_{\mathrm{ci}}}^{2}}\ensuremath{\sim}O(1)$] is shown to be larger than that of the classic result by a factor of $\frac{\ensuremath{\lambda}{\ensuremath{\omega}}_{\mathrm{ci}}}{{\ensuremath{\omega}}_{\mathrm{A}}}$, where ${\ensuremath{\omega}}_{\mathrm{ci}}$ and ${\ensuremath{\omega}}_{\mathrm{A}}$ are the ion-cyclotron and the Alfv\'en frequencies, ${k}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}$ is the perpendicular wave number, and ${c}_{s}$ is the ion sound speed. This fact can be utilized to heat a plasma with typical tokamak parameters.

Resonant Decay of Kinetic Alfvén Waves and Implication on Spectral Cascading

Abstract:A general equation describing the resonant nonlinear mode-coupling among kinetic Alfvén waves (KAWs) is derived using nonlinear gyrokinetic theory, which can be applied to study the potentially strong spectral energy transfer of KAWs. As a first application, the parametric decay of a pump KAW into two sideband KAWs are studied, with particular emphasis on the cascading in perpendicular wavenumber. It is found that, for the "co-propagating" cases with all three KAWs propagating in the same direction along the equilibrium magnetic field line, it exhibits a dual cascading character in the perpendicular wavenumber space; while for the "counter-propagating" cases with one sideband propagating in the opposite direction with respect to the pump wave, it instead, can exhibit both dual and inverse cascading behaviors. The implications on SAW instability nonlinear saturation and charged particle transport in fusion plasmas is also discussed.

Abstract:The fundamental parametric decay processes of kinetic Alfven waves (KAW) have been reexamined by employing the nonlinear gyrokinetic equations. Dispersion relations, valid for arbitrary k(perpendicular to)rho(i), are derived for parametric decays to KAW and ion sound waves. Here, k(perpendicular to) and rho(i) are, respectively, the wave number perpendicular to the magnetic field and the ion Larmor radius. It is found that, contrary to the small k(perpendicular to)rho(i) drift-kinetic results, nonlinear ion Compton scatterings also contribute significantly to the nonlinear ion Landau damping. Furthermore, for k(perpendicular to)rho(i) > vertical bar omega(0)/Omega(i)vertical bar(1/2), with omega(0) and Omega(i) being, respectively, the KAW and ion cyclotron frequencies, the decay processes are significantly enhanced over and qualitatively different from the ideal-magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) results. These findings are relevant for collisionless plasma transports, as well as non-local wave energy transports. In particular, they question the applicability of ideal-MHD-based theories for the prediction of saturated Alfven wave spectra and the corresponding fluctuation-induced transports in space and laboratory plasmas, suggesting that gyrokinetic theories are necessary for realistic comparisons with experimental measurements and observations. Abstract:Resonant and nonresonant decay of short wavelength lower-hybrid waves into long wavelength whistler waves and ion acoustic waves are considered. It is shown that the dominant coupling to the ion acoustic mode arises from the magnetic force producing a pressure along the magnetic field lines. This decay instability provides a mechanism for dissipating the wave energy that is observed to accumulate in the lowest frequency lower-hybrid waves.

Abstract:Parametric coupling of waves is one of the most efficient mechanisms of energy transfer that can lead to the growth or decay of waves. This transfer occurs at frequencies close to their natural frequencies. In partially ionized solar plasma, there are a multitude of waves that can undergo this process. Here, we study the parametric coupling of Alfvén waves propagating in a partially ionized solar plasma with ionization-recombination waves identified by our study to appear in a plasma in ionization non-equilibrium. Depending on the parameters that describe the plasma (density, temperature), coupling can lead to a parametric resonance. Our study determines the occurrence conditions of parametric resonance, by finding the boundaries between stable and unstable regions in the parameter space. Our results show that collisions and non-equilibrium recombination can both contribute to the onset of unstable behaviour of parametrically resonant Alfvén waves. Abstract:It is shown that the dispersion relation for whistler waves is identical for a high or low beta plasma. Furthermore in the high-beta solar wind plasma whistler waves meet the Landau resonance with electrons for velocities less than the thermal speed, and consequently the electric force is small compared to the mirror force. As whistlers propagate through the inhomogeneous solar wind, the perpendicular wave number increases through refraction, increasing the Landau damping rate. However, the whistlers can survive because the background kinetic Alfven wave turbulence creates a plateau by quasilinear diffusion in the solar wind electron distribution at small velocities. It is found that for whistler energy density of only ~10^-3 that of the kinetic Alfven waves, the quasilinear diffusion rate due to whistlers is comparable to KAW. Thus very small amplitude whistler turbulence can have a significant consequence on the evolution of the solar wind electron distribution function.

Abstract:The characteristics of whistler-mode waves excited by temperature anisotropic electrons, whose velocity distribution is a combination of bi-Maxwellian distribution and beam-like shapes, are investigated by both linear theory analysis and particle-in-cell simulation. A frequency gap is formed between two peaks, which is caused by the mode splitting of beam-like electrons. We have further investigated the influences of different parameters and found that the position of beam-like shape is the key parameter in determining the frequency of power gap. Moreover, the beam-like component on one direction will lead to the gap in the spectra of waves propagating in the opposite direction. Our study can shed light on the effects of beam-like electrons on the spectra of whistler-mode waves.

Abstract:Recently, observations from laboratory experiments have revealed amplitude modulation of whistlers by low-frequency perturbations. We here present theoretical and simulation studies of amplitude modulated whistler solitary waves (whistlerons) and their interaction with background low-frequency density perturbations created by the whistler ponderomotive force. We derive a nonlinear a nonlinear Schrodinger equation which governs the evolution of whistlers in the presence of finite-amplitude density perturbations, and a set of equations for arbitrary large amplitude density perturbations in the presence of the whistler ponderomotive force. The governing equations studied analytically in the small amplitude limit, and are solved numerically to show the existence of large scale density perturbations that are self-consistently created by localized whistlerons. Our numerical results are in good agreement with recent experimental results where the the formation of modulated whistlers and solitary whister waves were formed.

Abstract:This manuscript examines the non‐linear interaction between the negative energy beam cyclotron mode and the high‐frequency whistler waves. The negative energy beam mode is supported in the vicinity of the beam gyro‐frequency harmonics by a gyrating ion beam with a ring‐shaped velocity distribution. Using a gyrating ion beam, we have examined how dust charge variations affect the parametric up‐conversion of high‐frequency whistler waves (WWs) into a side band wave and a low‐frequency mode. For the linked modes, a non‐linear dispersion relation is obtained. It is demonstrated that the WWs divided by beam gyro‐frequency harmonics are up‐converted by a gyrating ion‐beam frequency. An expression for the ion cyclotron mode wave growth rate has been obtained. The estimation of the turbulence growth rate takes into account for the typical parameters of existing dusty plasma. It has been observed that an increased growth rate is reported with a rise in the pump wave amplitude, beam gyro‐frequency, number density of dust grains, and the relative density of dust grains. However, a decline in the growth rate has been observed with increasing gyrating ion beam density and dust grain's size.

The Nonlinear Evolution of Whistler-Mode Chorus Revisited: Modulation Instability as the Source of Tones

Abstract:We review the modulation stability of parallel propagating/field aligned Whistler Mode Chorus waves propagating in a warm plasma from a formal perspective with a focus on wave-particle interactions. The modulation instability criteria is characterised by a curvature of the dispersion relation for Whistler mode waves and a condition on the ratio between the group velocity $c_g$ and the electron sound speed $c_{s,e}$. We also demonstrate the in order to investigate the spatiotemporal evolution of the envelope and the formation of packets, one necessarily needs to account for the motion of ions within the system, leading to an ionic influence on the modulation instability threshold determined by the ion fraction of the plasma. Finally, we demonstrate that chirping may be captured when higher order effects are included within the spatiotemporal evolution of the amplitude. This yields not only an explicit expression for the sweep rate but identifies a possible origin for the power band gap that occurs at half the electron gyrofrequency. Numerical validation demonstrates that the interaction between wave packets is a source for the emergence of tones observed within mission data, and such interactions may be a major source of the electron energisation which Whistler-Mode chorus are responsible for.

Abstract:The impact of quantized magnetic energy is studied on the nonlinear scattering of quantized upper hybrid waves (QUH) from low-frequency quantized: ion-cyclotron (QIC), Alfvén (QA) and lower hybrid (QLH) waves in strongly magnetized degenerate electron-ion plasmas. The governing differential equations of pump QUH, QIC, QA and QLH waves are derived in the presence of Landau quantization, symbolized by the parameter ξ. The equations are then Fourier analyzed and the phasor matching technique is applied to study the nonlinear parametric interactions. General dispersion relations are calculated and analyzed further to obtain both three-wave decay and modulational instabilities of the QIC, QA and QLH waves. The analytical results admit that the growth rate of both three-wave decay and the modulated wave packet of QA waves increases as a function of quantized magnetic energy, while the three-wave decay rate of QIC and QLH is found to decrease with the quantized B field. The present findings confirm that the quantized magnetic energy may play a vital role in enhancing the quantized Fermi and Alfvén speeds of plasma particles, hence affecting the associated growth rates of three-wave decay and modulational instabilities are modified significantly. The present findings can be important to understand the features of a quantized magnetic field in strongly magnetized quantum systems, such as neutron stars, magnetars, pulsars, etc.

Abstract:Large amplitude Alfvén waves tend to be unstable to parametric instabilities which result in a decay process of the initial wave into different daughter waves depending upon the amplitude of the fluctuations and the plasma beta. The propagation angle with respect to the mean magnetic field of the daughter waves plays an important role in determining the type of decay. In this paper, we revisit this problem by means of multi-dimensional hybrid simulations. In particular, we study the decay and the subsequent nonlinear evolution of large-amplitude Alfvén waves by investigating the saturation mechanism of the instability and its final nonlinear state reached for different wave amplitudes and plasma beta conditions. As opposed to one-dimensional simulations where the Decay instability is suppressed for increasing plasma beta values, we find that the decay process in multi-dimensions persists at large values of the plasma beta via the filamentation/magnetosonic decay instabilities. In general, the decay process acts as a trigger both to develop a perpendicular turbulent cascade and to enhance mean field-aligned wave-particle interactions. We find indeed that the saturated state is characterized by a turbulent plasma displaying a field-aligned beam at the Alfvén speed and increased temperatures that we ascribe to the Landau resonance and pitch angle scattering in phase space.

Abstract:A Hamiltonian two-field gyrofluid model for kinetic Alfvén waves (KAWs) in a magnetized electron-proton plasma, retaining ion finite-Larmor-radius corrections and parallel magnetic field fluctuations, is used to study the inverse cascades that develop when turbulence is randomly driven at sub-ion scales. In the directions perpendicular to the ambient field, the dynamics of the cascade turns out to be nonlocal and the ratio $\chi_f$ of the wave period to the characteristic nonlinear time at the driving scale affect some of its properties. For example, at small values of $\chi_f$, parametric decay instability of the modes driven by the forcing can develop, enhancing for a while inverse transfers. The balanced state, obtained at early time when the two counter-propagating waves are equally driven, also becomes unstable at small $\chi_f$, leading to an inverse cascade. For $\beta_e$ smaller than a few units, the cascade slows down when reaching the low-dispersion spectral range. For higher $\beta_e$, the ratio of the KAW to the Alfvén frequencies displays a local minimum. At the corresponding transverse wavenumber, a condensate is formed, and the cascade towards larger scales is then inhibited. Depending on the parameters, a parallel inverse cascade can develop, enhancing the elongation of the ion-scale magnetic vortices that generically form.

Parametric decay instability of circularly polarized Alfvén wave in magnetically dominated plasma

Abstract:We investigate parametric decay instability (PDI) of circularly polarized Alfvén wave into daughter acoustic wave and backward Alfvén wave in magnetically-dominated plasma, in which the magnetization parameter $\sigma$ (energy density ratio of background magnetic field to matter) exceeds unity. We analyze relativistic magnetohydrodynamics (MHD), focusing on wave frequencies sufficiently lower than the plasma and cyclotron frequencies. We derive analytical formulae for the dispersion relation and growth rate of the instability as a function of the magnetization $\sigma$, wave amplitude $\eta$, and plasma temperature $\theta$. We find that PDI persists even in high magnetization $\sigma$, albeit with a decreased growth rate up to $\sigma\to\infty$. Our formulae are useful for estimating the decay of Alfvén wave into acoustic wave and heat in high magnetization $\sigma$ plasma, which is a ubiquitous phenomenon such as in pulsars, magnetars, and fast radio bursts.

Abstract:We perform three dimensional (3D) ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations to study the parametric decay instability of Alfven waves in turbulent plasmas and explore its possible applications in the solar wind. We find that, over a broad range of parameters in background turbulence amplitudes, the parametric decay instability of an Alfven wave with various amplitudes can still occur, though its growth rate in turbulent plasmas tends to be lower than both the theoretical linear theory prediction and that in the non-turbulent situations. Spatial - temporal FFT analyses of density fluctuations produced by the parametric decay instability match well with the dispersion relation of the slow MHD waves. This result may provide an explanation of the generation mechanism of slow waves in the solar wind observed at 1 AU. It further highlights the need to explore the effects of density variations in modifying the turbulence properties as well as in heating the solar wind plasmas.

Abstract:Chorus waves are widely investigated in space physics due to their significant role played in the radiation belts. Multiple structures of chorus frequency chirping elements, such as rising-tone structure, falling-tone structure, and hook-like structure, are observed in both space plasmas and the ground simulation experiments. In this paper, the numerical simulation on the generation of descending elements of chorus waves with parameters of a launching device, Dipole Research EXperiment, is conducted by a hybrid code named DAWN. The descending element of chorus waves is self-consistently generated without additional requirements except for a hot electron component as the free energy source. A case of ascending element under the magnetosphere parameters is also carried out to verify our simulations. Phase space distributions of electrons for the two chirping structures are analyzed, and the simulation results are consistent with previous theoretical predictions. It is obtained from the simulation results that the ascending element of chorus is observed together with an electron phase space hole (a depleted distribution function), while the descending elemet is observed together with an electron phase space clump. Abstract:Alfven waves discovered by Hannes Alfven (1942, Nature 150 405) are fundamental electromagnetic oscillations prevalent in magnetically confined plasmas existing in the nature and laboratories. Alfven waves play important roles in the heating, stability, and transport of magnetized plasmas. The anisotropic nearly incompressible shear Alfven wave is particularly interesting since, due to inhomogeneities and geometries in realistic plasmas, its wave spectra consist of both the regular discrete and the singular continuous components. In this paper, we will discuss interesting features of the spectral properties of Alfven waves, spontaneous wave excitations via resonance with supra-thermal particles, and nonlinear physics issues dealing with both wave-particle as well as wave-wave interactions.
