Abstract:This study proposes a learning content management system architecture based on the research on the standardization of learning content. This architecture adopps a layers model,classified into client layer,application layer and data layer from the top-down perspective.To explore the key issues,such as resource sharing and reusing,data input efficiency,resource retrieval efficiency,integrity and consistency of data,etc.,a detailed resolution is presented and implemented in a smaple learning content management system.In this study,the learning content is standardized according to the Learning object metadata standard and content packaging standard in the china elearning technology standatds.By using a metadata template and automatic informationretrieval,the metadata input efficiency is enhanced.The effective classification of the learning content dramatically enhances the data retrieval eficency.Finally,the problem of data integrity and consistency is solved by using the java transaction technology.

Abstract:Future learning raised brand new requirements and challenge to legacy learning management system. A detailed analysis of six mainstream LMS, such as Blackboard, Canvas, Moodle, Sakai, Brightspace and Learning Studio, was provided in the first part, followed by a comparison among the six LMS with dimensions in categories, application, market trends and stands. Moreover, challenges to legacy learning process were discussed from three aspects: concept, content and LMS. Finally, based on domestic situation and application scenario, a framework of NGLMS was proposed.

Abstract:SCORM(Sharable Content Object Reference Learning)has become the dominant standard of web-based course and learning management system.It's complicated to develop a SCORM-compliant LMS or make an existed LMS SCORM-compliant.In order to avoid re-development of similar functions,this paper puts forward and carries out a SCORM phg-in solution.After integrated with this plug-in,an LMS that has not abided by SCORM can conform to SCORM specification.

Abstract:Current-generation assessment tools used in K-12 and post-secondary education are limited in the type of questions they support; this limitation makes it difficult for instructors to navigate their assessment engines. Furthermore, the question types tend to score low on Bloom's Taxonomy. Dedicated learning management systems (LMS) such as Blackboard, Moodle and Canvas are somewhat better than informal tools as they offer more question types and some randomization. Still, question types in all the major LMS assessment engines are limited. Additionally, LMSs place a heavy burden on teachers to generate online assessments. In this study we analyzed the top three LMS providers to identify inefficiencies. These inefficiencies in LMS design, point us to ways to ask better questions. Our findings show that teachers have not adopted current tools because they do not offer definitive improvements in productivity. Therefore, we developed LiquiZ, a design for a next-generation assessment engine that reduces user effort and provides more advanced question types that allow teachers to ask questions that can currently only be asked in one-on-one demonstration. The initial LiquiZ project is targeted toward STEM subjects, so the question types are particularly advantageous in math or science subjects.

Abstract:This article examines the popular claim of Content Management Systems (CMSs) that providing a rich toolset and leaving the use under learner control is beneficial to learning. By means of a literature review, the current contribution examines whether all students are capable of using CMS tools so that their learning is enhanced. In contrast to what is assumed, the study conceptualizes tool use as a complex self-regulation strategy that cannot be taken for granted. Specifically, the article reviews empirical studies in relation to three topics: (a) personal agency in tool use, (b) performance effects of tool use and (c) influencing tool use variables. Findings reveal that not every student profited from the CMS learning opportunities; in multiple studies students differed in their tool use, and these differences had significant performance effects. Hence, these findings suggest that the pedagogical claim CMSs make is problematic. Besides this accumulated corpus of knowledge, the review revealed serious limitations in the retrieved studies which could hamper our findings. As a consequence, the review establishes a need for further research into students’ CMS tool use from an instructional design perspective. In addition to the theoretical framework, several directions for future research are given.

Abstract:LAMS (learning activity management system) is a very flexible learning design tool. With the combination of LAMS and the content, teachers/lecturers can easily organize the learning activities for the students in e-learning. This paper focuses on the application and functions of LAMS in college and university e-learning. Through formal research and evaluation of the impact of LAMS on e-learning in 3 disciplines (carried out in Huazhong Normal University), the presentation summarizes both the merits and the downsides of the application of LAMS in college & university e-learning and concludes with reflection on how further work will go on.

Abstract:Reuse of learning materials is an emerging and important theme in the field of education.A popular idea is that a disciplined use of so-called learning objects,with the help of the modular building blocks of learning content,may offer good opportu nities for reuse.Two pedagogical views on learning objects are distinguished: an analytical pedagogical view that is fully consistent with the traditional technological approach to learning objects;and an alternative holistic pedagogical view that is insufficiently recog nized in this technological approach.Problems associated with both above-mentioned views are discussed.With regard to the analytic view,relatively small problems pertain to:(1) the metadata problem,(2) the arrangement problem,and(3) the exchange problem.With regard to the holistic view,more fundamental problems pertain to:(1) the context problem,(2) the pedagogical function problem,and,(3) the correspondence problem.An integrative approach stressing reediting,intermediate products,templates,and technical automa tion is presented as a possible direction to overcome these problems.

Abstract:With deep application of computers and network technology, online training courses gradually become an important way for training teachers. Many researchers paid much attention on these courses and studied their characteristics of sharability and reusability. This paper suggests applying SCORM in content design of teachers’ online training courses, which is a very popular standard with targets at sharability and reusability in digital learning field. Basing on the instructional design model ADDIE, it puts forward a model on design of teachers’ online training courses and describes every step especially on how to apply SCORM standard into the content design and development of the training courses. It is expected to provide a reference for the design and development of online training courses for teachers, realize the communication and resource share among different courses, and promote integrative development of digital resources.

Abstract:Learning resource standards are very important in a courseware authoring system. Some learning resource standards, like learning object metadata (LOM), content packaging (CP) and question and test interoperability (QTI) standards, provide a very effective way to process learning resource content. LOM provides a circumspect element set for describing content. CP defines a graceful structure for packaging content and makes it easy to analyze and interchange content packages. QTI standards describes a basic structure for the representation of question and test data. LOM, CP and QTI can be well applied in courseware authoring. Based on them, a standardized visual Web-based courseware authoring system named SmartEye system is developed to help courseware developers developing high-quality Web-based courseware. This paper instructs the application of LOM, CP and QTl in content authoring and deployment, and also instructs the design and implementation of the SmartEye system.

Abstract:The rapid uptake of campus-wide Learning Management Systems (LMS) is changing the character of the on-campus learning experience. The trend towards LMS as an adjunct to traditional learning modes has been the subject of little research beyond technical analyses of alternative software systems. Drawing on Australian experience, this paper presents a broad, critical examination of the potential impact of these online systems on teaching and learning in universities. It discusses in particular the possible effects of LMS on teaching practices, on student engagement, on the nature of academic work and on the control over academic knowledge.

Abstract:Australian post-secondary institutions have embraced the incorporation of Learning Management Systems (LMSs) into traditional classroom-based instruction and distance learning models. Given that an increasing number of Chinese students are studying in Australia and that their experience of using LMSs in China may be very different from that in Australia, it is important to explore the issues in LMS implementation in the two countries. This literature review compares the use of LMSs in China and Australia with the aim of identifying some of the issues impacting their integration into the course offerings of post-secondary institutions in both countries. The review identifies seven main themes that influence the implementation of LMSs: LMS selection and non-financial factors; diversity of LMS deployment in Australia; the rise of MOOCs in China; the impact of culture on LMS usage; online learning and socialisation; learner and faculty expectations of online learning; and roadblocks to online learning. This review helps to identify and synthesise the issues that impact upon the ability of higher education institutions in Australia and China to integrate LMS technologies into their course offerings.

Tailoring Learning Management Systems and Learning Contents for the SCORM Model

Abstract:Standardized learning management systems and contents are becoming prevalent over time with the growing adoption of Web-based learning technologies. The complexity adherent in the SCORM run-time environment APIs and data model, however, makes it difficult for instructional designers, content developers and LMS vendors to tailor their contents and LMSs for the SCORM model. In this paper, our own practice of the SCORM model is presented. We firstly propose our architecture for E-Learning applications. Being LMS-centered, the architecture seeks to bridge the gap between conformant LMSs and diverse learning contents. To highlight our design, we present a comprehensive LMS implementation with extended data elements adapted to meet the needs of college education. Moreover, we detail a systematic method of turning existing HTML-based courseware into SCORM conformant contents. The last part of this paper discusses technical and pedagogical issues of concern regarding the learning scenarios of SCORM in different learning environments and the accordingly tuning of the LMSs.

Abstract:The emergence of the Web as a delivery mechanism for education has led a number of organizations to develop and implement quality evaluation criteria for digital learning resources and Web-based courses. The Chinese E-Learning Technology Standardization Committee is developing a specification for evaluating Web-based courses. This paper introduces the background on the standard, CELTS-22, and its guidelines for use. Further, this paper explores critical implementation issues through a case study of two similar evaluation criteria and systems that are used by NEEDS - A Digital Library for Engineering Education and MERLOT - the Multimedia Educational Resource for learning and Online Teaching in the United States.

How to improve reusing and sharing the learning resources, and to track the learning progress in medical training are interesting topics on Medical Learning Management System (MLMS). It can enhance the reusing and sharing level of learning resources, and encourage the learning interaction between tutors and students as well. Abstract:The rapid increase of learning resources makes it difficult to search, manage and reuse. Using metadata is an efficacious way to solve this problem. With consistent descriptions of the characteristics of learning resources, searching becomes more specific and accurate, management becomes more simple and uniform, and sharing becomes more efficient and in-depth. The Learning Object Metadata Schema developed by IEEE P1484.12 is one of the most promising metadata approaches for describing learning resources, on which we developed a learning resource metadata management system (LRMMS). The system provides a platform for users to register, browse, search and evaluate learning resources. It is a decentralized framework with several metadata servers to provide services. The system supports distributed queries and the evaluation loop of learning resources. Users can search resources from different points of view, especially educational needs. We also made the interface as user-friendly as possible.

Abstract:In this study, we evaluated the limitations of using learning resources that can be used in a Learning Management System (LMS) platform, which cannot be packaged and can be used again in processing, combining, and rearranging learning based on learning objects that already exist in different LMS platforms. Studying content with formats other than SCORM is not easy adapted to the needs because the content must be reorganized every time using a different platform. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze and design learning according to the SCORM format to meet the ISO 19796-1 standard platform. This standard has the ability to share, reuse, and interoperate learning objects. The challenge in the world of education today is how to build a knowledge-based society. The building of e-learning plays an important role. Currently, the e-learning portal is a very diverse learning management system (LMS) platform used by schools or tertiary institutions. In addition, the types of learning resources and content are also diverse. It does not meet the e-material design requirements based on mechanisms that can be shared, reused, and operated on different platforms to meet the granularity element. The results provide insight and highlight the mismatch between digital learning and digital asset standards, especially in Indonesia. This helps us analyze, design, develop, and submit digital assets for electronic learning materials in vocational high school software expertise programs in accordance with SCORM Standards.

Abstract:When developing Web-based education resources, we meet new problems: resources have poor interoperability and reusability. They canpsilat be reused or retrieved by other systems and many resources are developed redundantly. ADL proposed the SCORM standard to solve this problem. SCORM provides a mechanism allowing content developed in one system to be shared by other SCORM-conformant systems supported by CAM, RTE and SN. Abstract:The aim of this research paper is to analyze the design process of a language learning management system (LLMS). Developed from the intelligent tutoring system (ITS), LLMS consists of three sections, namely, the remote courseware, the learning customer service system and the data synchronization agency. This system supports English language online learning in the perspectives of concentration on the assessment of student learning ability, the adaptive learning content, the dynamic adjustment of learning strategies and the feasible application of ITS. The case study exemplifies the controlled process of designing an intelligent system in a real language learning context in China in depth. The LLMS effectively reflects students' individual differences in cognitive status and learning styles and further enhances students' English language learning interest.
