Abstract:Objective To investigate macular function and its correlation with macular morphology after panretinal photocoagulation(PRP) in patients with diabetic retinopathy(DR).Methods Twenty four patients(41 eyes) with DR were treated with PRP and followed up for 3 months. The changes of central vision were compared and analyzed before and after PRP treatment.Multifocal electroretinography(mfERG) and optical coherence tomography(OCT) were used to detect the changes of macular function and macular morphologies.Macular function and its correlation with macular morphology after PRP in patients with DR were explored. Results Central vision and macular foveal thickness of DR patients were 0.52±0.28,(257.55±124.30)μm after PRP,and 0.57±0.32,(241.15±103.43)μm before treatment(t=1.27,P=0.22;t=-1.00,P=0.33).The response intensities of N1 wave in ring 4 and ring 5 and P1 wave in ring 3 and ring 5 of mfERG were reduced after PRP compared with those before treatment(t=2.48,3.69,2.23,2.40;all P<0.05);While no significant difference was found in incubation period among different waves(all P>0.05).There was no correlation between macular foveal thickness and results measured by mfERG(all P>0.05).Conclusion PRP has no relation with changes of macular foveal thickness and central vision in patients with DR,but causes a functional impairment in the adjacent untreated retina, which is shown as the decrease of response densities by mfERG.
