Abstract:Paper for recycling has become a promising raw material for the pulp and paper industry due to its low cost and because it is conducive to sustainable development. Unfortunately, recycled paper contains a high volume of printed paper that is difficult to deink, which restricts its applications. Flotation deinking plays an essential role in the product quality and process cost of wastepaper recycling. This study was performed to evaluate the deinkability of environmentally friendly offset inks by flotation deinking. For this purpose, three mineral oil free series of four-color inks, namely, hybrid light emitting diode ultraviolet (LED–UV), LED–UV, and vegetable oil-based inks, were printed on white lightweight coated papers under laboratory conditions. The deinking methodology involves repulping, deinking agent treatment, flotation, hand sheet making, and evaluation of the produced hand sheets. The obtained results indicated that the hybrid LED–UV prints had the best deinkability. After flotation deinking, the deinking efficiency and the whiteness of the hybrid LED–UV ink increased by 58.1% and 47.6%, respectively. LED–UV ink had a 46.9% increase in the deinking efficiency and a 37.0% increase in the whiteness of the hand sheet. The deinking efficiency of the vegetable oil-based ink was the lowest, at 42.1%, and the whiteness of the hand sheet increased only by 23.8%. The particle size distribution analysis demonstrated that the hybrid LED–UV four-color ink exhibited a larger value of the average particle size than the two other. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that the hybrid LED–UV ink particles on the surface of the fibers were the least abundant after deinking. The physical strength properties of the hand sheets, including tensile index, folding resistance, and interlayer bonding strength of the hybrid LED–UV, LED–UV inks, and vegetable oil-based inks, increased.

Abstract:A series of polyether with different molecular structures prepared in our lab were evaluated as deinking agent.The contact angle of the polyether aqueous solution on ink was measured.Adhesion work of the polyether on ink was also determined.It was found that the ratio of epoxy-ethane/epoxy-propane in the molecular structure plays a key role in deinking efficiency(brightness).When the contact angle is less than 33.3°and adhesion work is about 55mN/m,the highest deinking efficiency is achieved.

Abstract:One of the major applications (40% in Europe) of plastic is packaging, which is often printed to display required information and to deliver an attractive aesthetic for marketing purposes. However, printing ink can cause contamination in the mechanical recycling process. To mitigate this issue, the use of surfactants in an alkaline washing process, known as de-inking, has been employed to remove printing ink and improve the quality of recyclates. Despite the existence of this technology, there are currently no data linking the de-inking efficiency with typical printing ink compositions. Additionally, it is necessary to investigate the de-inking process under the process parameters of existing recycling plants, including temperature, NaOH concentration, and retention time. This study aims to evaluate the performance of commonly used printing inks with different compositions under various washing scenarios for plastic recycling in conjunction with different de-inking detergents containing surfactants or mixtures of surfactants. The results indicate that the pigments applied to the ink have no significant effect on the de-inking process, except for carbon black (PBk 7). Nitrocellulose (NC) binder systems exhibit high de-inkability (over 95%) under the condition of 55 °C and 1 wt.% NaOH. However, crosslinked binder systems can impede the de-inking effect, whether used as a binder system or as an overprint varnish (OPV). The de-inking process requires heating to 55 °C with 1 wt.% NaOH to achieve a substantial effect. Based on the findings in this work, breaking the Van der Waals forces, hydrogen bonds, and covalent bonds between the printing ink and plastic film is an essential step to achieve the de-inking effect. Further research is needed to understand the interaction between surfactants and printing inks, enabling the development of de-inkable printing inks and high-performance surfactants that allow for de-inking with less energy consumption. The surfactant and NaOH have a synergistic effect in cleaning the printing ink. NaOH provides a negative surface charge for the adsorption of the cationic head of the surfactant and can hydrolyze the covalent bonds at higher concentrations (>2 wt.%).

Abstract:Waste printed circuit boards (WPCBs) are an attractive secondary resource that is challenging to dispose of due to its complexity. Reverse flotation is an effective method to remove non-metallic particles (NMPs) to obtain metals from WPCBs. Nevertheless, the removal of NMPs is usually inadequate in the present flotation practice. Thus, to provide a clean approach to improve the removal efficiency of NMPs, the method of adding gutter oil during dry grinding process was adopted to enhance the hydrophobic sites on the surface of NMPs to improve the floatability. The surface morphology of NMPs was analyzed by SEM, the results show that the rough morphology inhibited the adhesion of bubbles, while water occupied the cracks and pores, making it challenging for collector adsorption, which result in unstable particle-bubble adhesion. The results of FTIR indicate that both NMPs and gutter oil have –CH 3 , –CH 2 , -C = O, -C-O functional groups, which promotes the adsorption of gutter oil on the surface of NMPs. The contact angle (CA) results show that the adsorption of gutter oil on the particle surface is conducive to the formation of enhanced CA. Furthermore, the flotation enhancement effect was verified by flotation kinetic experiments. The accumulated floats yield of NMPs conditioned by gutter oil during grinding is increased from 67.05% (NMPs without conditioning) to 95.02%, and the resin recovery is increased by 31.10%. It is demonstrated that dry grinding with gutter oil can strengthen the floatability of NMPs, which provides a potential approach to increase the flotation efficiency of WPCBs.

Abstract:On the basis of laboratory research, the industrial experiment enzymatic deinking of old newsprint with cellulase from Aspergillus L22 was carried out and qualified newsprint was produced with 100% enzymatic deinked pulp. Compared with the traditional chemical deinking, the enzymatic deinking can obtain the deinked pulp with higher brightness and lower residual ink. Moreover, the deinking effluent from the enzymatic deinking process has lower COD or BOD content than that from the chemical deinking process.
Effects of Deinking Mode on Pore Structure and Crystallization Property of Recycled Fiber

Abstract:X-ray diffraction and low-temperature nitrogen adsorption were adopted to investigate the pore structure and crystallization property of the fibers of old newspaper pulp(ONP) and deinking pulp with different deinking modes,and the fractal geometry was used to further analyze the pore structure of the fibers.The results indicate that(1) the BET specific surface area,BJH pore volume and BJH average pore size of the deinking fibers remain almost unchanged after a neutral,alkaline or enzymatic deinking process;(2) the fractal dimensions of the fibers before and after the deinking process are similar,which means that deinking modes have little effect on the pore structure of the fibers;(3) the crystallinity of the fibers decreases to 12.24%,6.12% or 0.77% after a neutral,alkaline or enzymatic deinking process,respectively;(4) the water retention value(WRV) increases after deinking,in an order of alkali deinking>neutral deinking>enzymatic deinking;and(5) after deinking,the beating degree and average length of the fibers slightly decrease while the content of fine fibers increases.

Abstract:The recycling of waste plastics is of considerable significance with environmental and economic benefits, while available separation approaches have been considered as a major bottleneck for its widespread application. Thus, we proposed a simple method, flotation along with surface modification, to separate waste acrylonitrile-butadienestyrene and polyvinylchloride mixtures. Single-factor experiment was conducted to determine the critical parameters in surface modification. Surface response methodology using Box-Behnken Design was performed to optimize separation performance. The quadratic models were generated to predict the floatability of acrylonitrile-butadienestyrene and the difference between the floatability of polyvinylchloride and acrylonitrile-butadienestyrene. The model was also utilized to determine optimized conditions by desirability approaches. The optimized conditions were: concentration = 0.18 M, temperature = 75.00 degrees C, treatment time = 11.50 min along with stirring rate = 200 rpm. The efficient separation of acrylonitrile-butadienestyrene and polyvinylchloride was achieved, yielding recovery of 98.40% and purity of 98.43%. The experimental responses well agreed with predicted values, demonstrating the accuracy of the prediction model. The formed hydrophilic groups, coated iron oxide, and signs of corrosion were confirmed as the major mechanism for the selective surface hydrophilization of acrylonitrile-butadienestyrene. Consequently, this method is feasible for separation of waste acrylonitrile-butadienestyrene and polyvinylchloride mixtures, and can be expected to promote the sustainable recycling of waste plastics. Abstract:inorganic salts including CaCl2, Al-2(SO4)(3) and MgCl2 are used to change electrochemical character and the deinking process of ONP was optimized. The main electrochemical characteristic parameters of deinking system, such as Zeta potential, turbid value, absorbance and transparence are measured, and the relationship between electrochemical characteristic parameters and dosage of inorganic salts as well as quality index of the deinked pulp were discussed. The research results showed that an optimal deinking efficiency can be obtained by adding definite feasible inorganic salts into the deinking system, and there is a good functional correlation between the quality indexes of the deinked pulp and the colloid chemistry characteristic parameters. Among three inorganic salts, the influence sequence to the deinking result is CaCl2 > Al-2(SO4)(3)> MgCl2, and the best additive is CaCl2. With a suitable dosage of CaCl2, the brightness of the deinked pulp can be increased 5.4 percent, and the content of residual ink particles in the deinked pulp is reduced by 60.92%.

Abstract:The pulp and paper industry employs processes that produce a large amount of wastewater, resulting in pollution of the environment. In the present study, deinking wastewater was treated using an integrated process of combined coagulation/flocculation, activated sludge process, and Fenton reaction system. The deinking wastewater produced from a large-scale papermaking company was treated. Results indicated that the sedimentation with coagulation and flocculation, used as a pretreatment process, was a preferred option for SS removal. The semi-extended aeration system for COD and BOD5 removal delivered excellent performance. The residual and barely biodegradable pollutants in the wastewater could be efficiently removed by Fenton reactions. The COD, BOD5, and SS total removal efficiencies achieved were 94%, 90%, and 99%, respectively. Measures for control proposed in the present study can efficiently resolve the problems encountered in the operation and can maintain a stable process. The integrated process combining coagulation/flocculation, activated sludge process, and the Fenton reaction system is a favorable option for the long-term operation of the treatment of deinking wastewater. Fenton reactions as a tertiary process applied in deinking wastewater treatment can remove efficiently recalcitrant pollutants and show reliable performance for effluent.

Abstract:The enzymatic deinking and fiber modification of old newspaper by using cellulases and xylanase were investigated and the suitable enzymes were selected. The results demonstrated that the cellulases and hemicellulases obviously improved the deinking efficiency and fiber properties. Moreover, the synergistic effect of Novozym342 and xylanase (HC) could further enhance the deinking performance, reduce the dirt counts and develop the resultant pulp brightness. Additionally, compared to the traditional chemical deinked pulp, enzymatic deinked pulp had better bleachability, and the brightness of the bleached pulp reached 59.1%ISO, 9%ISO higher than that of the unbleached pulp.

Abstract:Lignin, a by-product of pulping and biorefinery, has great potential to replace petrochemical resources for wastewater purification. However, the defects of lignin, such as severe heterogeneity, inferior reactivity and poor solubility, characterize the production process of lignin-based products by high energy consumption and serious pollution. In this study, several lignin fractions with relatively homogeneous structure were first obtained by organic solvent fractionation, and their structures were fully deciphered by various characterization techniques. Subsequently, each lignin component was custom-valued for wastewater purification based on their structural characteristics. Benefiting from the high reactivity and reaction accessibility, the lignin fraction (lignin-1) refined by dissolving in ethanol and n-butanol could been used as a raw material to produce cationic lignin-based flocculant (LBF) in a copolymerization system using green, cheap and recyclable ethanol as solvent. The lignin fraction (lignin-2) extracted by methanol and dioxane showed low reactivity and high carbon content, which was used to produce lignin-based activated carbon (LAC) with phosphoric acid as activator. Moreover, the influences of synthetic factors on the purification capacity were discussed, and the LBF and LAC produced under the optimal conditions showed distinguished purification effect on kaolin suspension and heavy metal wastewater, respectively. Furthermore, the corresponding purification mechanism and external factors were also elaborated. It is believed that this cleaner production strategy is helpful for the valorization of lignin in wastewater resources.
Separation of Waste Polymethyl Methacrylate and Polyvinyl Chloride Mixtures by Flotation after Fenton Oxidation

Abstract:This study provides a novel method, Fenton oxidation combined with flotation, to facilitate separation of waste polymethyl methacrylate and polyvinyl chloride mixtures for recycling. Fenton oxidation was found to induce selective surface hydrophilization of polymethyl methacrylate and suppress its flotation recovery in flotation, thereby facilitating its flotation separation with polyvinyl chloride. The surface hydrophilization occurred on polymethyl methacrylate surface was confirmed by the contact angle that decreased from 95.80 degrees to 73.11 degrees, and was attributed to the changes in surface hydrophilic groups and morphology. Scanning electron microscopy images revealed the formation of uniformly micrometer scale spotted-structures on polymethyl methacrylate surface. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy ascertained the obvious increase of elemental ratio of O/C and the introduction of hydrophilic groups (carbonyl and hydroxyl). The optimized conditions obtained for separation of polymethyl methacrylate and polyvinyl chloride mixtures were [H2O2]/[Fe2+] ratio of 3000, hydrogen peroxide concentration of 0.2 M, reaction time of 6.0 min, pH of 5.80, reaction temperature of 25.0 degrees C, flotation time of 3.0 min, frother dosage of 14.8 mg/L, and airflow rate of 6.0 mi./min. Under optimized conditions, for the samples with particle size of 0.9-4.0 mm, the recovery and the purity of polyvinyl chloride were 100% and 97.61%, and the recovery and the purity of polymethyl methacrylate were 97.55% and 100%, respectively. Particularly for the particle size of 3.2-4.0 mm, the purity and recovery of polyvinyl chloride and polymethyl methacrylate all reached up to 100%. Reusing of Fenton and flotation solutions was evaluated, and results indicated they can be used at least 3 and 5 times, respectively. Besides, a simple economic analysis demonstrated that this method is economically feasible. In conclusion, this environmentally friendly, sustainable, and economically feasible method contributes to improve the recycling quality of waste plastics, and provides technological insights in the cleaner and sustainable disposal of waste plastics. Abstract:The printing ink on the plastic surface greatly reduces the quality of recycled plastic products. In this work, quaternary ammonium-modified waste cooking oil (WCOQE) was fabricated, using waste cooking oil, epichlorohydrin and trimethylamine aqueous solution as raw materials, by ring-opening esterification and quaternary amination reaction. The synthesis conditions of WCOQE were optimized, and the structure and properties of WCOQE were characterized by FTIR, zeta potential and 1H NMR. Furthermore, WCOQE had excellent emulsifying performance, low kraft point, low CMC value, good foaming and stability, which could effectively reduce the surface tension of water, showing application potential in the field of plastic deinking. Importantly, compared with the waste cooking oil without deinking effect, the WCOQE had an excellent deinking performance on the ink on plastic surface, and the deinking efficiency could be improved by increasing the concentration of deinking agent, the deinking temperature, and prolonging the pre-soaking and stirring time. The results of AFM, EDS, optical photos and Leica microscope showed that the roughness changed significantly, and the ink molecules were gradually peeling off. This work highlighted the excellent potential of quaternary ammonium-modified waste cooking oil for the removal of printing inks on the plastic surface.GRAPHICAL

Abstract:In this study, lignin-aminated polyol (LAP) was synthesised and used to enhance the anchor capability of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) sponges for silver nanoparticles (AgNPs); the prepared Ag/LAP/PVA sponge was used as efficient and recyclable catalysts for removing harmful organic pollutants 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) and methylene blue (MB). The structural morphology of Ag/LAP/PVA was firstly investigated by SEM with EDS analysis and XRD analysis. Then, the chemical composition of which was characterized by IR spectra, Raman spectra, and XPS analysis. Finally, the catalytic properties of which was tested by Brunauer–Emmett–Teller method and UV–vis spectra. The structural morphology result demonstrated that Ag/LAP/PVA had porous structure and AgNPs were firmly anchored on the wall of sponge and evenly dispersed in the sponge. The chemical composition result of which demonstrated that Ag/LAP/PVA had been successfully prepared and hydroxyl functional groups on LAP and PVA synergistic enhanced the anchoring capacity of LAP/PVA sponges for AgNPs. The catalytic properties result demonstrated that Ag/LAP/PVA had excellent catalytic property for 4-NP and MB reduction, with an apparent rate constant of 0.6082 min −1 and 0.8238 min −1 , respectively. Furthermore, Ag/LAP/PVA exhibits excellent catalytic repeatability for 4-NP after 12 consecutive cycles without significant loss of activity. Therefore, the facile, efficient, and recyclable Ag/LAP/PVA catalyst broadens the application of lignin and has enormous potential applications in sewage treatment.

In this paper, a kind of high value-added amphoteric ion-exchange resin (AIER) was prepared by using diethylenetriamine to amidate PLSW under the optimized conditions from a Box-Behnken design. Its adsorption and regeneration properties and the universality of the method were investigated. The results suggested that AIER possessed a high removal efficiency to anionic dyes, and the batch dye adsorption processes were endothermic and spontaneous, which is consistent with a pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The penetration adsorption capacities of AIER were recorded to be 987.08 mg/g for RR239 and 1037.75 mg/g for RB5 at the optimized operating conditions of column height = 6.4 cm, flow rate = 1 mL/min, and dye solution of 500 mg/L. They were more than 200 times larger than that of commercial activated carbon when the mixture composed of AIER particle and diatomite particle (filter aid agent) was used as a fixed-bed adsorbent. Zeta potential analysis results indicated that the good adsorption and regeneration performances of AIER were mainly attributed to the presence of amino and carboxyl groups in the molecular structure of AIER. Most importantly, this method possessed excellent practicability and universality for different types of PLSW from factory wastewater. The results provide a feasible method and theoretical basis for the green resource utilization of PLSW, and the goal of "waste control by waste" was fundamentally achieved.

Abstract:Dry-spun acrylic fiber wastewater (DAFW) is one kind of toxic refractory petrochemical wastewater. The results of GC–MS qualitative analysis demonstrated that the residual organic compounds in DAFW after the biotreatment are non-biodegradable and hardly available for traditional nitrification–denitrification processes. First, the batch test indicated that there was no obvious inhibition or toxicity of DAFW to anaerobic ammonium oxidizing (anammox) bacteria. A pilot test was then carried out to evaluate the feasibility and efficiency of biological nitrogen removal by the anammox process. A rapid start-up was achieved by inoculating enriched anammox sludge to a biofilm system with low inoculated sludge concentration. The pretreatment for anammox process was necessary because DAFW contains high SS which affected the nitrogen removal efficiency. By controlling the reactor temperature and SS content in influent, the removal efficiencies of ammonium and nitrite were 85% and 90%, respectively. The stoichiometric ratios of ammonium conversion, nitrite removal and nitrate production were 1:(1.29):(0.24) for synthetic wastewater and 1:(1.26):(0.22) for DAFW. After 180days of operation, there was a diverse change of the anammox consortium bacteria. Compared with the inoculated sludge (single Brocadia anammoxidans sp.), Kuenenia sp. became the predominant bacteria, with a small amount of Jettenia sp. and B. anammoxidans sp. The results demonstrated that ammonia in effluent of DAFW after two-stage biotreatment could be removed efficiently by the anammox process.

Abstract:Accumulation of foulants on adsorbents surface was regarded as the key problem inhibiting the repeated use of adsorbents for bio-treated wastewater reclamation. In the present research, the adsorption performance of aminated resin NDA80 was investigated in terms of anti-fouling from the theoretical comparison with its precursor resin NDA79, and its repeated use in practical application. After preloading with tannic acid (TA) as model background contaminants in biologically treated wastewater, the pore volume and specific surface area of the resins decrease obviously due to partial micropore blockage. However, on NDA80, the adsorption affinities (Ka) of phenol and p-nitrophenol increase by 76% and 67% after loaded with 120μmol/g TA, respectively. Differently, the values of Ka on NDA79 remain almost constant before and after the same loading with TA. The special anti-fouling performance of aminated resin NDA80 was regarded as the contribution of functional groups containing nitrogen on the meso–macro-pore of the resin. The effluent from biologically treated coking wastewater was evaluated by NDA80 on a pilot-scale treatment. The removal of organic contaminants per specific surface area by NDA80 increased by about 35% due to its better anti-fouling property, which is corresponding to the theoretical experiment. The adsorption capacity of NDA80 was almost constant after 71days of repeated use while the surface area and pore volume of NDA80 decreased by about 30%.

Abstract:In this study, the flocculating properties of chitosan-graft-polyacrylamide (PAM) copolymer flocculants have been investigated in pilot scale, and the raw water from Zhenjiang part of Yangtse river in China was used as simulated waste water. The influences of dose, mechanical mixing rate, and sedimentation time to the flocculating effects have been investigated in different seasons: summer and winter, respectively. The optimal experimental conditions have been studied by orthogonal test. In addition, the structure effects of the flocculants: the grafting ratio, on the flocculating properties have been also investigated in pilot scale, which results were fully consistent to those from the beaker experiment in laboratory scale using kaolin suspension as simulated waste water. Compared to poly ferric sulfate, current used flocculants in Jinxi Water Factory, chitosan-g-PAM copolymer flocculants showed better flocculating properties, which was ascribed to the cooperative effects of the charge neutralization and bridging flocculating mechanisms of polymer flocculants. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
