Abstract:In recent years, land subsidence has been from a scattering incidence to a nationally disastrous phenomenon in China, which has resulted in not only huge amount of economic losses but also undermining the sustainability of the affected region. The cause of such geological disaster is quite complex and very hard to be described accurately in a detailed physics-based numerical model, which generally requires paramount data. This thus initiates the development of such models that demand less data while can effectively predict the trend of the subsidence. In the past, black-box or grey unit models were extensively applied to study problems with high uncertainties. Based on GM (1, 1) model developed firstly by Deng in 1982, a new model was developed in this paper, which sets focus on distribution coefficients, defines each theta as a variable and thus forms a vector of distribution variables. The modified GM (1, 1) model was applied to predict land subsidence in several cases. The result shows that the performance of this model is generally better than that of the original one. But it was also found that when the time-dependent series were highly fluctuating, the improvement is insignificant, which implies that the GM (1, 1) model can only predict the basic trend of series and requires further residual adjustments or other modification methods in order to achieve more accurate prediction. Considering that groundwater extraction is a prominent factor in inducing land subsidence and the lagging effect of over pumping also affects in the process, the author built up GM (1, 2) and GM (1, 2, m) model to simulate the process, but the results of GM (1, 2) turned out to be un-convergent in some testing cases, while the GM (1, 2, m) model performed much better.
