Evolution of Chinese cities' spatial pattern

Abstract:The urbanization process of China began in 1949.The process shows different significant stages because of the influence from the changes in the national regional development strategy.This article divides the urbanization process into four stages,and studies the changes of the urban spatial pattern in different stages.It is found that from 1949 to the Reform and Opening-up,the number of cities and the urbanization rate in the western region are growing faster than in the eastern,while the urbanization pace in the eastern is the slowest.From the Reform and Opening-up to the beginning of this century,the eastern region has experienced the rapid urbanization.Urban development pattern shows that the eastern is faster than the midwest,while the southern is faster than the northern.
