Abstract:Since the 20th century, the urban de-industrialization tendency and the arising of information services have critically influenced urban structures in the western developed countries or regions. In China, the relatively developed big cities, especially the mega-cities or even global cities, such as Shanghai, also begin their de-industrialization tendencies.Based on the 1% population census data (2005) of the 18 counties (or districts) and the current urban function pattern of Beijing, this paper analyzes the methods of Location Quotient and the concentration indexes.To- gether with the 5th national population census in 2000,the transformation and the de-industrialization tendency has been analyzed.Main findings include the follow- ings:firstly, among the 20 types of industries, employment in manufacture is still the highest, and the spatial pattern of the urban function conforms to the Burgess's Concentric Model;secondly, since the year of 2000,the de-industrialization tenden- cies are very evident. The high level services develop rapidly, while the percentage of employment in the primary and the manufacture decrease remarkably. Those in the FIRE sector and the cultural creativity relatively increase, all of which shows that Beijing is stepping up to creative city or post-industrial city.Thirdly,in this de-industrialization process, the urban functions begin its decentralization and ho- mogenization tendencies.Functions of finances and real estate (FIRE) are much rel- evant to the population growth across spaces. But at the same time, industrialization process continues in the periphery counties.
