Abstract:The therapeutic effects of acupuncture are well known.Based on previous and existing experimental results,we combine the basic theory of acupunture and meridian with that of neuroendocrine immune system and propose a new tentative theory of human meridian.We hypothesize that the human meridian system consists of neuroendocrine immune networks with numerous sensitive nodes and their functional connections.The complex meridian networks are then not only spreading over the whole human body but also taking effects on body through those sensitive nodes and their functional connections.

Abstract:The meridians, nervous system, and circulatory system are important components of traditional Chinese medicine and modern medicine. The meridians have a high degree of consistency with the distribution of the nervous and circulatory systems in modern medicine, and are closely related in the process of disease treatment. Therefore, people often confuse the three. Based on the great advantages of acupuncture and moxibustion in the treatment of nervous system and circulatory system diseases, the author has made diversified exploration on its rele⁃ vance in terms of origin, physiological anatomy, physiological function and clinical application. It is believed that meridians have their relative independence, and the nervous and circulatory systems cannot completely replace meridians. However, meridians are closely related to the nervous and circulatory systems, and in clinical practice, meridians can be combined with the nervous and circulatory systems to guide the treatment of diseases.

Abstract:The meridian theory is an important component of traditional Chinese medicine, playing a crucial role in disease diagnosis, treatment, and health preservation. Serving as the media for the effects of acupuncture, moxibustion, herbal medicine, and acupressure massage, meridians exert undeniable impact on the human body. However, the essence of meridians remains a topic of debate. Recent research has primarily focused on their anatomical structures, leading to numerous hypotheses. Simultaneously, other researchers have approached this subject from an energetic perspective, discovering information interactions within the meridian system. These findings suggest that meridians possess both physical and information dimensions, indicating that a singular approach to their study is insufficient. To bridge this gap, a shift from purely structural research toward an exploration of the information aspects of meridians is necessary. By integrating this information approach with traditional meridian theory, it may be possible to develop a new, modernized meridian theory that is aligned with contemporary concepts, making it more accessible and applicable in clinical settings.

Abstract:Despite the great value in the treatment of diseases and keeping healthy in every period,the essence of meridian is doubted when it encounters the western science.The observation of meridian using modern method and instrument is the key to the modernization of Chinese Traditional Medicine.The full development of optical method with vast vistas has been hot spots along with the method of sound,heat,electricity and magnetism,etc,all of which can be objective proof of the existence of meridians.We summarizd recent research on meridian using different optical principles, focusing on the recent progress in different characteristics of the meridians—ultraweak bioluminescence,infrared imagedisplaying, the infrared radiant spectrum and the light transport properties,it is for the purpose of having a comprehensive understanding in this field.

Abstract:In the long history of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), meridians play essential roles as the critical network to regulate the normal physiological functions of the human body. They are regarded to be the channels connecting the internal organs with the body surface and various parts of the body. Although there are many studies and doctrines trying to reveal the nature of meridians for their validation in TCM, the mechanism underlying the meridians remains unclear. Herein, based on our macroscopic quantum state concept of ion channels (i.e., sub-nanometer scale channels), we propose a quantum principle of meridians. The acupoints and organ symptom are in a macroscopic coherence state of the ion channels in meridians. By applying TCM treatments (e.g., TCM massage, acupuncture, moxibustion, and electroacupuncture) on the acupoint, the corresponding organ symptom could be well regulated with help of quantum meridian state.

Abstract:Acupuncture has been practiced in China for over 2000 years to treat a variety of diseases based on the "meridian theory" as described in the Yellow Emperor's Classic of Internal Medicine. To this date, the meridian theory continues to be an important guide for traditional Chinese medicine practitioners to diagnose and treat patients. Although the meridians have not been identified reliably as actual anatomical structures, they appear to serve as a road map to identify the location of various acupoints. Research has shown that acupoints overlie major neuronal bundles. The meridians extensively studied in the cardiovascular realm are the pericardial meridians (P) 5, 6, which overlie the deep median nerve. Meridians involved with gastrointestinal processes are (St) 36, 37, which overlie the deep peroneal nerve. Acupuncture needles, either manipulated manually or stimulated using a low current and frequency, have been documented to be a neurophysiological basis for modulating the activity of peripheral and central neural pathways. This review describes our current understanding of acupoints and meridians from a physiological aspect.

Abstract:The correlation between meridians and viscera is the key content of the meridian theory in acupuncture medicine. This paper introduces the close relationship between the meridians running on the body surface and viscera from ancient lite-rature, modern experimental studies (such as acupoint sensitization, neuro-endocrine-immune networks, etc.), and clinical application in the treatment of various conditions with acupuncture, moxibustion, Guasha (scraping) therapies, etc. We also presented some related research ideas (i.e., taking the clinical treatment as the forerunner, paying more attention to multi-disciplinary integration, combining clinical and basic research together, doing research from tridimensional point of review, and making full use of advanced technology, etc.) in order to provide a possibly favorable help for researchers to further reveal the scientific mechanisms underlying correlation between the meridian and viscera in the future.

Abstract:The physical basis of meridians and acupoints (acupuncture points) is in a complex system mainly of connective tissue and interwoven with the blood capillaries, nerves, lymph vessels, etc. Elements of Ca, P, K, Fe, Zn, Mn, etc are found concentrated in the deep connective tissue structures in locations corresponding to acupoints. On this physical basis, the specific waveband of high efficiency for transmission of infrared rays exists in the collagenous fibre in a liquid crystal state. The development direction and new idea of researching on acupuncture and meridians are discussed.
[Development and significance of theory on yang meridians]

Abstract:The theory on yang meridians was reviewed from the aspect of intellectual history. It is held that the significant change of the relation between yang meridians and zang-fu organs influenced the theory and the sense of yang meridians. The comprehension on yang meridians closely related with the understanding on the whole classic theory of meridian. And the knowledge on features of meridians would finally affect the proper understanding of differentiation of syndromes according to meridians and collaterals. From the view of point, new comprehensions are proposed including the interior and exterior relations of meridians, relations between meridians and zang-fu organs, specialty of differentiation of syndromes according to meridians and collaterals, syndromes of yang meridians and changing of the indications of acupoints.
Optically Noninvasive Measurement of the Light Transport Properties of Human Meridians

Abstract:To confirm the existence and properties of human meridians, the optical transport properties along the pericardium meridian and tissues around the pericardium meridian are studied noninvasively on twenty healthy volunteers in vivo and then compared with each other. Our study shows that the light propagating along the meridian and non-meridian directions both conform to the Beer's exponential attenuation law. However, statistical analysis of the results suggests that the optical transport properties of human meridian differ from those of the surrounding tissues over a low modulated frequency range (P < 0.01), and light attenuation along the pericardium meridian is significantly less than that along the non-meridian direction. These findings not only indicate the existence of acupuncture meridian from the point of view of biomedical optics, but also shed new light on an approach to investigation of human meridians.

Abstract:As one of the basic concepts of the Chinese medicine, the theory of Meridians and Collaterals is lack of scientific demonstration so far. In order to verify the existence of Meridians and Collaterals, a method based on the electric technique and information theory is suggested, A specialized electrode array has been designed and an experimental scheme of signal stimulating and detecting was introduced. The response signals at different points on skin surface were analyzed. A difference between the signal amplitudes along a Meridian and on its sides was found. The study on Meridian based on the electric technique and information theory is one of the important fields of bioelectronics.

Abstract:It is an important basis for the ancients to establish the meridian theory through the propagated sensation meridian and acupuncture stimulates acupuncture sensation to make Qi to the disease location.The production of propagated sensation meridian is based on connective tissue.Meridian may be the fascia or connective tissue itself or may be formed by the connective tissue channels,which acupuncture stimulated by the sensation of meridians and Qi transports in the qi passage from the analysis of the structure of the connective tissue.From the connective tissue function point of view,nerve fiber signaling,microcirculation of the material transport,etc.,play an important role in the production of acupuncture sensation and Mast cell degranulation release of substances(such as serotonin,histamine,etc.) and Ca2+ played a role in activating the meridian effect of the signal.Although the meridian effect is based on connective tissue,it is inseparable from multi-system and multi-substance participation.The meridian is a complex functional system composed of nerves,blood vessels,lymphatic vessels,body fluids,fascia,muscles and unknown elements.It is necessary to research the essence of meridian in multi-angle and multidisciplinary in the future.

Abstract:The review summarizes studies related to current issues and concepts of the neuroanatomic basis of the meridian system and acupuncture points. The proponents of their existence have not yet come to any consensus on how they might work or be tested in a scientific context. Kim Bonghan, a professor at Pyongyang Medical University of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, discovered the anatomical structure of meridian collaterals, which he called the Bonghan corpuscles (now known as primo nodes) and the the Bonghan ducts (primo vessels), and called it the Bonghan (Kyungrak) system. In 2010, it was renamed into the primo vascular system (PVS), which exists throughout the organism, including blood and lymph vessels. PVS is an anatomical structure being a network of ducts with fluid flowing in them. This system consists of primo-vessels and primo-nodes, corresponding to acupuncture meridians, and acupuncture points, respectively. Thus, the PVS can serve as a morphological substrate for acupuncture points and meridians of traditional Chinese medicine; however, since there is no scientific consensus on the neuroanatomical basis of acupuncture, further morphological, physiological, and clinical studies are needed to promote a broader mutual understanding of this issue in the research community and beyond.

Abstract:Objective & Methods : In the point of several medical books included 'Internal Classic' and Hyungsang medicine, the writer studied about meridian theory and it's disorders, after adapting to acupuncture and herb medicine. Results : 1. Dr. Jisan explained concretely physiological and pathological meridian appearances with using metaphor about phenomenons of nature and human living. 2. Shapes corresponding to meridian are considered as Yukkyunghyung formed by more or less of vigor and blood, and by tendency of up and down in eyes and nose, and also contained diseases of viscera and characters. 3. The colors connected with meridian are changed according to conditions, and meridian is seen through colors. And then colors is the properties of vital energy and symbol of spirit, that is expressed as aspect of essence, vigor, spirit and blood, as the original color of five viscera, as the colors of four seasons and as the colors of diseases. So the changes of feelings are appeared to meridian flow. 4. The method of examining pulse for meridian disorders is applied to Jisan diagram. Jisan diagram is devised from mutual communication of viscera and connection with inside and outside. It is conjugated widely in clinical examination to be distinguished into Dam-Bangkwang, into diseased part of viscera and into meridian. Also it is conjugated recuperation of diseases. 5. The meridian diseases are appeared all the distributed parts of meridian, especially skin, hair, eyebrow, and the ends of the extremities which are sensitive to stimulus. The causes are the disharmony between vital energy and blood and the discordance of six atmospheric variation. The symptoms are skinny aches, itching and eruption, etc. Conclusions : The acupuncture of Hyungsang medicine which utilizes classification of shapes, examining pulse according to Jisan diagram and demonstration of symptoms, is very effective and required systematical study from now on.
An information entropy model on clinical assessment of patients based on the holographic field of meridian

Abstract:Meridian system is not only the basis of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) method (e.g. acupuncture, massage), but also the core of TCM’s basic theory. This paper has introduced a new informational perspective to understand the reality and the holographic field of meridian. Based on maximum information entropy principle (MIEP), a dynamic equation for the holographic field has been deduced, which reflects the evolutionary characteristics of meridian. By using self-organizing artificial neural network as algorithm, the evolutionary dynamic equation of the holographic field can be resolved to assess properties of meridians and clinically diagnose the health characteristics of patients. Finally, through some cases from clinical patients (e.g. a 30-year-old male patient, an apoplectic patient, an epilepsy patient), we use this model to assess the evolutionary properties of meridians. It is proved that this model not only has significant implications in revealing the essence of meridian in TCM, but also may play a guiding role in clinical assessment of patients based on the holographic field of meridians.
Differences in Optical Transport Properties Between Human Meridian and Non-meridian

Abstract:This study is to present a new scheme for the detection of human meridian system non-invasively. The optical transport properties along the pericardium meridian and a non-meridian path about 1 cm away from the meridian were measured non- invasively on 20 healthy people in vivo. 633 nm, 658 nm and 785 nm red lasers were used for irradiation, and the diffuse light emittances at different points on meridian and non-meridian directions were collected respectively and compared. Our study suggested that the light propagation characteristics along both the meridian and non-meridian directions conformed to the Beer's exponential attenuation law. Statistical analysis of the results suggested that the optical properties of human meridian differ from those of the surrounding tissue ( p < 0.05), and the light attenuation is less when propagating along the pericardium meridian than along the non-meridian direction. These findings not only confirmed the objective existence of acupuncture meridians, but also shed new light on the understanding of meridians.

Abstract:The origin of the concept of the meridian system is closely connected with the treatment effects of acupuncture, and it serves as an empirical reference system in the clinical setting. Understanding the meridian channels would be a first step in enhancing the clinical efficacy of acupuncture treatment. To understand the relationship between the location of the disease and the sites of relevant acupoints, we investigated acupuncture treatment regimens for low-back pain in 37 clinical studies. We found that the most frequently used acupoints in the treatment of low-back pain were BL23 (51%), BL25 (43%), BL24 (32%), BL40 (32%), BL60 (32%), GB30 (32%), BL26 (28%), BL32 (28%), and GB34 (21%). For the example of low-back pain, we visualized the biomedical information (frequency rates) about acupuncture treatment on the meridians of a three-dimensional (3D) model of the human body. We found that both local and distal acupoints were used to treat low-back pain in clinical trials based on the meridian theory. We suggest a new model for the visualization of a data-driven 3D meridian system of biomedical information about the meridians and acupoints. These findings may be helpful in understanding the meridian system and revealing the effectiveness of acupuncture treatment.
