Abstract:We synthesized a range of sulfonated polyaryletherketone (x%SCBI-SPAEK-6F) with pendant benzimidazole side groups at a tunable molar percentage (x within 5-15%) for potential application as proton exchange membrane (PEM). A systematic study had been undertaken to study the performance and the underlying structure-properties relationship of PEMs fabricated by those novel amphoteric polymers. It was found that the dimensional stability, oxidative stability and methanol resistance performance of x%SCBI-SPAEK-6F membranes were significantly improved with the increase of the benzimidazole content due to the acid-base interaction. In particular, the 5%SCBI-SPAEK-6F membrane exhibited a relative selectivity (10.5 x 10(3) S s cm(-3)) almost 20 times higher than that of Nafion117 membrane at 75 degrees C, demonstrating the significant promoted proton conductivity (0.35 S cm(-1)) and reduced methanol penetration (6 x 10(-7) cm(2) s(-1)) by the ionic barrier. With such superior performance, these polymers are promising for the fabrication of practical proton exchange membranes in commercial fuel cells.
Polybenzimidazole/ionic-liquid-functional Silica Composite Membranes with Improved Proton Conductivity for High Temperature Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells

Abstract:A series of polybenzimidazole containing hydroxyl groups (PBIOH)/ionic-liquid-functional silica (ILS) composite membranes (PBIOH-ILS) have been successfully prepared for the high temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cells (HT-PEMFCs). These ionic-liquid-functional silica (ILS) nanoparticles, which germinate from the polymer chains by an in situ sol-gel reaction, enhance the performance of polybenzimidazole-based composite membranes. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were used to characterize and confirm the Si-O-Si structure in the membranes. The PBIOH-ILS composite membranes have shown excellent thermal stability, oxidative stability and improved mechanical strength. Considering the trade-off of mechanical properties and proton conductivity, 5% ILS in weight was demonstrated to be the optimum content in the membranes. The proton conductivity was significantly enhanced because the ILS nanoparticles with high specific area in the membranes could absorb more phosphoric acid, which just like stones flooded by the sea after doping with phosphoric acid. The doping level of PBIOH-ILS 5 was as high as 7.54 after doping with phosphoric acid for 48h and 9.65 after doping with phosphoric acid for 72h. High doping levels lead to high proton conductivities. The PBIOH-ILS 5 had a proton conductivity of 0.106Scm−1 at 170°C, which is higher than some of the known PBI-based membranes measured under similar conditions.
New technology for the development of modified polybenzimadazole for advanced direct methanol fuel cell

Abstract:This paper presents a new route to synthesize copolymers of monomers with different chemical nature. This work consists of first synthesizing a modified polybenzimidazole monomer and then preparing copolymers for making proton exchange membrane. In situ polymerization studies is performed for different feed ratios of the monomers. The conductivity of proton exchange membrane is developed by introducing -sulfonic acid groups in monomers. The proton conduction properties have been investigated with A. C. Impedance spectroscopy. The proton conductivity is measured to be 5.86 × 10-2 Scm -1. The ability of this membrane to inhibit the methanol crossover is also determined by a gas chromatograph. The methanol permeability of the membrane is markedly influenced by the presence of modified polybenzimidazole / sulfonated polyetheretherketone proportion in the copolymer. The increase in sulfonic acid groups in the polymer arises from the increase in osmosis of the methanol.

Abstract:A series of cross-linked composite membranes based on polybenzimidazole (PBI) and polymeric ionic liquids (PILs) containing imidazole rings have been successfully prepared. The obtained PIL consisted of polymeric cation PBI-Bul and anion BF4-. Here, a concept of dual proton transfer channels was proposed, in which the anions of PIL served as proton receptor through electrostatic interaction and the imidazole rings accepted protons by acid-base effect simultaneously. In order to obtain proton exchange membranes based on PBI/PIL with excellent comprehensive properties, the cross-linker gamma-(2, 3-epoxypropoxy) propyltrimethoxysilane (KH560) is introduced into the matrix to strengthen the mechanical properties by hydrolyzing into Si-O-Si network structure. The composite membranes display excellent mechanical properties, oxidative and thermal stability. In particular, the cPBI-BF4-40 membranes with the highest content of PIL shows a proton conductivity of 0.117 S cm(-1) at 170 degrees C and it is good enough both in mechanical and PA uptake, which will make an outstanding candidate over other PBI-based membranes for high temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cell (HT-PEMFC) applications. Abstract:Hydrogen-air proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) and direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) are excellent fuel cells with high limits of energy density. However, the low carbon monoxide (CO) tolerance of the Pt electrode catalyst in hydrogen-air PEMFCs and methanol permanent in DMFCs greatly hindered their extensive use. Applying polybenzimidazole (PBI) membranes can avoid these problems. The high thermal stability allows PBI membranes to work at elevated temperatures when the CO tolerance can be significantly improved; the excellent methanol resistance also makes it suitable for DMFCs. However, the poor proton conductivity of pristine PBI makes it hard to be directly applied in fuel cells. In the past decades, researchers have made great efforts to promote the proton conductivity of PBI membranes, and various effective modification methods have been proposed. To provide engineers and researchers with a basis to further promote the properties of fuel cells with PBI membranes, this paper reviews critical researches on the modification of PBI membranes in both hydrogen-air PEMFCs and DMFCs aiming at promoting the proton conductivity. The modification methods have been classified and the obtained properties have been included. A guide for designing modifications on PBI membranes for high-performance fuel cells is provided.

Abstract:Proton exchange membrane materials (PEMs) for fuel cells and their modification methods were reviewed. The PEMs include polyperfluorosulfonic ion-exchange resin, polybenzimidazole (PBI), polyetheretherketone (PEEK), and other new types of block copolymers etc. The modification methods are divided into sulfonation, acid complex, hybridization, blend, copolymerization, radiation and plasma graft method. The advances in the properties of these PEMs and their modification methods were summarized in details.

Abstract:The development of polymer membranes with excellent alkaline stability and high hydroxide conductivity is a huge challenge to fuel cells. Herein, two blend membranes based on poly(bis-arylimidazolium)s (i.e. Ppbim and Ptpim) and polybenzimidazole (PBI) are prepared and used as anion exchange membranes. Ppbim and Ptpim ionenes are synthesized from bis-imidazole compounds (i.e. pbim and tpim) and α,α′-dibromo-p-xylene via the Menshutkin reaction, while pbim and tpim are synthesized from 2-phenylbenzimidazole (or 2,4,5-triphenylimidazole) with 1,4-dibromobutane through the nucleophilic substitution reaction. The physicochemical properties such as water uptake, ion exchange capacity, swelling, tensile strength and conductivity can be adjusted by changing the molar ratio of pbim (or tpim) to PBI in the blend membranes. Comparing with Ppbim, Ptpim containing bulky tri-phenyl groups exhibits better alkaline stability due to the steric hindrance effect of tri-phenyl groups. The technical feasibility of the Ptpim-51%PBI membrane for the anion exchange membrane fuel cell is demonstrated by the polarization curves. This work provides a straightforward method to synthesize water-insoluble ether-free polymers with dicationic groups in the polymer repeat unit.

Abstract:Ion exchange membranes are the most important parts of fuel cells.According to its conduction ion species,the ion exchange membrane (IEM)includes the cation exchange membrane (CEM) and the anion exchange membrane(AEM),which are used in the proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) and the alkaline anion exchange membrane fuel cell (APEFC).This paper reviews the research and the application of these two types of batteries,focusing on the main problems of the common anion exchange membranes and its synthesis methods and the degradation mechanism.Finally,the developmental and research prospects are forecasted.

Abstract:Polybenzoxazine (PBz)-modified polybenzimidazole (PBI) nanofibers have been prepared by an electrospinning process. The nanofibers have been crosslinked through the ring-opening addition reaction of the benzoxazine groups of PBz. The crosslinked PBI nanofibers show an enhancement in mechanical strength and an increase in resistance to solvents, so are of use as a reinforcement for the preparation of PBI-based composite membranes. Modification of the PBI-based composite membranes with the crosslinked PBI nanofibers significantly improves their mechanical properties, acid uptakes, and dimensional stability upon acid doping. The composite membrane shows a proton conductivity of 0.17 S cm−1 at 160 °C under anhydrous conditions, which is about 2-fold higher compared to the proton conductivity of the neat PBI membrane. The single cell employing the composite PBI membrane exhibits a maximum power density of 670 mW cm−2, which is about a 34% increase compared to the cell employing the neat PBI membrane. A convenient and effective approach to prepare high performance proton-exchange membranes for high temperature fuel cells has been demonstrated.

Abstract:A series of sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) containing pendant carboxyl (C-SPEEKs) have been synthesized using a nucleophilic polycondesation reaction. A condensation reaction between 1,2-diaminobenzene and carboxyl resulted in a new series of copolymers containing benzimidazole groups (SPEEK-BIms). The expected structures of the sulfonated copolymers are confirmed by 1H NMR. The dependence of ion exchange capacity, water uptake, proton conductivity and methanol diffusion coefficient of SPEEK-BIm membranes has been studied and compared with their carboxyl acid form. The results suggest that the introduction of benzimidazole groups may be responsible for many excellent properties of the membranes for fuel cell. It is noticeable that the markedly improved oxidative stability is benefit for the application of membrane.

Abstract:Fuel cells represent a clean alternative to current technologies for utilizing hydrocarbon fuel resources. Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) have acquired due importance as they are best suited for applications where a quick start up is required such as in automobiles. The prime requirements of fuel cell membranes are high proton conductivity, low methanol/water permeability, good mechanical and thermal stability and moderate price. To satisfy the requiement of PEMFC, many new proton exchange membranes were developed. This paper reviews recent progress in the development of sulfonated block copolymers as membrane materials to replace the perfluorinated sulfonated membrane (e. g. Nafion) for fuel cell applications to improve the performances of fuel cells. Special attention is paid to sulfonated poly(arylene ether), sulfonated polyimide and sulfonated styrene based block copolymers, which have advantageous properties as compared to that of Nafion and analogous random copolymers of the same overall composition. Finally, the development trend of sulfonated block copolymers is prospected.
Preparation and Properties of Poly(2,5-Benzimidazole)/Sulfonated Sepiolite Composite Proton Exchange Membrane

Abstract:Phosphoric acid doped polybenzimidazole membranes with good electrochemical properties at high temperature have been under increasing study in recent years for application in high temperature polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (HT-PEMFC). The disadvantages associated with these types of membranes include reduced proton conductivity due to acid leaching under continuous usage. The aforementioned drawbacks can be partly overcome by the addition of modified inorganic particles. This work reports the synthesis of poly (2,5-benzimidazole)/sulfonated sepiolite composite membrane (ABPBI/S-Sep) via in-situ method following by phosphoric acid doping procedure. The sulfonation modification of Sep was successfully characterized by XRD and contact angle test. SEM shows that S-Sep particles are well dispersed in the ABPBI matrix. The introduction of S-Sep into ABPBI helps to improve the water uptake, phosphoric acid doping level and proton conductivity of the composite membrane compared to the virgin ABPBI. With the similar phosphoric acid doping level, the proton conductivity of the composite membrane exhibits the highest value of 2.31mS/cm at 90 degrees C which is four times of phosphoric acid doped pristine ABPBI membranes, indicating that the sulfonated sepiolite modified ABPBI composite membrane could be a prospective candidate applying in PEMFC to extend its operating temperature ranges.
A hybrid membrane of modified polybenzimidazole and heteropoly acid for direct methanol fuel cell

Abstract:We have synthesized monomer for modified polybenzimidazole (mPBI) and use the monomers to synthesize the polymer. The properties of the monomer and polymer are characterized by FTIR. The analysis results show that the molecular structure of the synthesized monomer and mPBI is consistent with our designed structure. An effective proton exchange membrane is then developed in this work by doping silicotungstic acid hydrate (SWA) -SiO2 in mPBI to combine the desired lower methanol permeability from mPBI with high proton conductivity of SWA. The proton conductivity of the proton exchange membrane is characterized by AC impedance spectroscopy under realistic operating conditions. We found when the new membrane contains 37.5wt% of SWA -SiO2/PBI, the membrane is very stable mechanically at the operation conditions and its proton conductivity is excellent, 3.12×10-3 Scm-1 at room temperature.

Abstract:The sluggish commercial application of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) with low Pt loading is chiefly hindered by concentration polarization loss, particularly at high current density regions. Addressing this, our study concentrates on the ionomer membranes in the cathode catalyst layer (CCL) and explores the potential of incorporating additional hydrophilic or hydrophobic components to modify these ionomers. Therefore, an all-atom model was constructed and for the ionomer and hydrophilic and hydrophobic modifications were implemented via incorporating SiO2 and PTFE, respectively. The investigation was conducted via molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to predict the morphology and structure of the ionomer and analyze the kinetic properties of oxygen molecules and protons. The simulation results elaborate that the hydrophilic and hydrophobic modifications favor the phase separation and the self-diffusion coefficients of oxygen molecules and protons are enhanced. Considering the hydration level of the ionomer films, hydrophilic modification facilitates mass transfer under low-hydration-level conditions, while hydrophobic modification is more effective in optimizing mass transfer as the hydration level increases. The optimal contents of SiO2 and PTFE for each hydration level in this work are 9.6% and 45%, respectively. This work proposes a reliable model and presents a detailed analysis of hydrophilic and hydrophobic modifications, which provides theoretical guidance for quantitative preparations of various composite membranes.

Abstract:A novel benzimidazole trimer (alkyl-BI) was synthesized using 3,3′-diaminobenzidine and succinic acid as monomers, and then a series of cross-linked membranes (c-SPEEK-Xs) were prepared by a heating method using the alkyl-BI as the cross-linker. We systematically studied the water uptake and swelling ratio, thermal and chemical stability, mechanical properties, proton conductivity, and methanol permeability of the cross-linked membranes as a function of different loading ratios of the alkyl-BI trimer. All of the properties of the cross-linked membranes were significantly improved over membranes consisting of unmodified SPEEK. In particular, the performance of the c-SPEEK-Xs membranes was compared to that of a cross-linked membrane, c-SPEEK-BI7, which was prepared by using rigid-BI as the cross-linker. The latter cross-linker was synthesized by using 3,3′-diaminobenzidine and isophthalic acid as monomers in order to investigate how cross-linkers with different structures affect the morphology and properties of the membranes. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis showed that c-SPEEK-BI7 and the c-SPEEK-6.5% possess different hydrophilic/hydrophobic two-phase separation morphologies, which have dramatic effects on the proton conductivity and methanol permeability.

Abstract:The materials used for fuel cell membrane must have a high proton conductivity, a strong enough wall to block the reactant flow rate and be chemically or mechanically stable in the environment around the fuel cell. To improve the effectiveness of fuel cell membranes and reduce production costs, several synthetic polymer membranes have been developed, including polyethersulfone, polysulfone, polyvinyl alcohol, and polystyrene. Membranes from this polymer have the advantage of being cheap, commercially available, and allowing its structure to store moisture so it can operate at higher temperatures, yet it has low hydrophilic property. Chitosan, as a biopolymer that has strong hydrophilicity property resulted from numerous hydrophilic groups (e.g. –OH, –NH 2 and –NR 3 þ), can be used for various chemical modifications including to increase mechanical and chemical stability and modification to the possibility of producing ion exchange and increasing ionic conductivity which is a requirement for fuel cell membrane. The purpose of this study is to review the use of chitosan as synthetic polymer-based membrane modification from its structure and properties. Recent achievements and prospect of its applications have also been included.

Abstract:High-temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cells (HT-PEMFCs) are of great interest to researchers in industry and academia because of their wide range of applications. This review lists some creative cross-linked polybenzimidazole-based membranes that have been prepared in recent years. Based on the investigation into their chemical structure, the properties of cross-linked polybenzimidazole-based membranes and the prospect of their future applications are discussed. The focus is on the construction of cross-linked structure of various types of polybenzimidazole-based membranes and their effect on proton conductivity. This review expresses the outlook and good expectation of the future direction of cross-linked polybenzimidazole membranes.

Abstract:Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) have become the most rapidly developing fuel cells in recent years. Proton exchange membranes (PEMs) are one of the most essential components of PEMFCs; however, their performance cannot adapt to the rapid development of today's society. In addition, to replace traditional low-performance membranes and meet technical development and commercial needs, most studies are focusing on the design and preparation of ideal PEMs with low electron permeability, low fuel and oxidizer permeability, high proton conductivity, excellent mechanical and chemical properties, and low cost. Herein, we review PEMs based on polymers in the aromatic hydrocarbon family. Owing to their rigid backbone structure, most aryl polymers are lowly soluble in most solvents. The solubility of a polymer can be improved by introducing different monomers that modify the aromatic hydrocarbon compounds in the main or side chain. The PEM can then be prepared using the solution casting method. To improve the proton conductivity, water uptake, mechanical properties, and oxidation stability of PEMs, many researchers have reported the use of various approaches: sulfonation, immersion in hydrochloric acid or phosphoric acid (PA), blending, crosslinking, and addition of inorganic fillers or metal–organic frameworks. The insights provided by this review will assist the development of higher-performance, safer, and cheaper PEMs.

Abstract:A novel tetraamine, 4,4'-oxy-bis[4-(trifluoromethyl)-1,2-benzendiamine] ( 7 ), was synthesized through a seven-step synthetic procedure starting from 1-chloro-4-nitro-2-(trifluoromethyl)benzene ( 1 ). Polybenzimidazole CF 3 -PBI-OO was prepared from 4,4'-oxybis(benzoic acid) (OBA) and tetraamine ( 7 ) using Eaton's reagent as the solvent. To achieve a relatively high molecular weight, the temperature and concentration should be well controlled. CF 3 -PBI-OO exhibited a high inherent viscosity of 2.1 dL/g, measured in methanesulfonic acid (MSA) with a concentration of 0.2 g/dL at 35 °C. We provide a relatively fast method to fabricate membranes by dissolving them in MSA. CF 3 -PBI-OO also required less time (2.7 h) to achieve a saturated PA uptake (271%), when immersed in a 75% phosphoric acid solution at room temperature. CF 3 -PBI-OO membrane with a PA uptake of 213% demonstrated the optimal combination of properties. The membrane exhibited a high proton conductivity of 115 mS/cm at 160 °C. The single fuel cell based on CF 3 -PBI-OO demonstrated a peak power density of 691 mW/cm 2 at 160 °C. It showed superior performance compared to commercially available m -PBI when subjected to the same test conditions.

Abstract:Poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK) and sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK, IEC = 2.07 mequiv.g(-1)) have been synthesized via nucleophilic aromatic substitution reaction. Bromomethylated poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK-Br) is then prepared and reacted with 2-benzimidazolethiol to obtain the benzimidazole grafted poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK-BI). The structures of PEEK-Br and PEEK-BI are characterized by H-1 NMR spectra. Composite membranes based on SPEEK and PEEK-BI are prepared and their properties used for fuel cells are studied in detail. The results show that the composite membranes exhibit greatly improved mechanical properties as well as reduced water uptake and methanol permeability compared with the pristine SPEEK membrane. The increased oxidative stability and selectivity indicate that the composite membranes are promising to be used as proton exchange membranes. (C) 2010 Professor T. Nejat Veziroglu.
