Abstract:Mesoporous materials possess well-defined mesopores with pore diameter of 2-10 nm, which can hold bulk ions or molecules with special chemical and optical properties, offering a challenging approach to novel chemical and optical applications. Recently, photoluminescence (PL) has been studied on Eu3+ complexes loaded unmodified or modified MCM-41 and MCM-48. The properties of the guests in the mesoporous channels greatly depend on the structure and the microenvironment of the mesopores. Here we reported that [Eu(bpy)(2)](3+) was encapsulated in the mesopores of HMS, MCM-41 and SBA-15, respectively. The PL properties and the structural effect on PL efficiency per Eu unit mass were studied. [Eu(bpy)(2)](3+)(bpy: 2, 2'-bipyridine) was encapsulated in mesoporous HMS, MCM-41 and SBA-15, respectively. XRD, ICP analysis, FT-IR, N-2 sorption and photoluminescence spectra were used to characterize the corresponding samples. All the samples exhibited the typical photoluminescence of Eu3+ when excited with a xenon lamp. Effect of dispersion degree and mesoporous structure on the photoluminescence efficiency was investigated.

Abstract:[Eu(bpy)(2)](3+) (bpy: 2,2'-bipyridine) was encapsulated in mesoporous materials SBA-15 XRD spectra, ICP analysis, IR spectra, N-2 adsorption-desorption and the photoluminescence spectra were used to characterize the corresponding samples. With the increasing of the content of the impregnated [Eu(bpy)(2)](3+), the surface area and pore volume of the impregnated sample decreased. All the impregnated samples exhibited the typical photoluminescence of Eu3+ when excited with a xenon lamp. It was suggested that the [Eu(bpy)(2)](3+) has been successfully introduced into the pores of SBA-15.

Abstract:[Eu(bpy)2]3+ (bpy:2,2'-bipyridine) was encapsulated in hexagonal mesoporous materials MCM-41 and HMS. XRD spectra, ICP analysis, IR spectra, N2 adsorption measurements and the photoluminescence spectra were used to characterize the corresponding impregnated samples. After the impregnation of [Eu(bpy)2]3+, the BET surface, pore diameters and pore volume of the impregnated samples were decreased. All the impregnated samples exhibited the typical photoluminescence of Eu3+ when excited with a xenon lamp. Compared with the impregnated HMS, the impregnated MCM-41 samples show higher photoluminescence efficiency for the impregnation of [Eu(bpy)2]3+. It suggests that MCM-41 is a more efficient host for the photoluminescence of europium complexes than HMS.
Pl Properties Of Mesoporous Materials Doped With [Eu(Bpy)(2)]Cl-3

Abstract:Rare earth complexes, especially Eu3+ complexes, have been studied extensively. However, there are a few reports on the photoluminescence (PL) properties of europium complexes immobilized in unmodified or modified hexagonal MCM-41 and cubic MCM-48. The properties of the guests in the mesoporous channels greatly depend on the structure and the microenvironment of the mesopores. Recently, we investigated the PL properties of [Eu(bpy)(2)](3+) impregnated HNIS, and SBA-15 materials and similar results to those of the above publications were found. However, It was found that the loaded Eu species is easy to loss when washed. To improve the immobilization efficiency of Eu species, here we reported that Eu doped mesoporous material (Eu-MM) was directly synthesized by mixing [Eu (bpy)(2)](3+) (bpy: 2, 2'-bipyridine) in the mixure of starting materials with solvent evaporation method at room temperature using the nonionic triblock template Pluronic 123 (P123, M-uv=5800), EO20PO70EO20, as a template. The mesoporous structure was kept for the Eu doped mesoporous material and the immobilization efficiency of Eu species is higher than that of Eu doped amorphous silica or the [Eu(bpy)(2)]Cl-3 impregnated sample. Compared to the pure [Eu(bpy)(2)]Cl-3 complex and the complex doped in amorphous silica, the Eu species in Eu-MM samples exhibited higher PL efficiency.

Abstract:The photoluminescence properties of europium (III) ions and its complex with 2,2'-bipyridine, [Eu(bpy)2]3+, encapsulated in the hexagonal mesoporous material HMS are reported. X-ray diffraction spectra, ICP analysis, IR spectra, N2 adsorption measurements, and the photoluminescence spectra were used to characterize the corresponding impregnated samples. All the impregnated HMS samples exhibit the typical photoluminescence properties of Eu3+ when excited with a xenon lamp. These results show that HMS is an efficient host lattice for the photoluminescence of the europium (III) ions bound to an appropriate ligand.

Abstract:Ligand N-2,N-6-bis(2-hydroxyethyl)pyridine-2,6-dicarboxamide (L=BHPC) was synthesized and used to construct lanthanide-based mesoporous material Eu-L-MCM-41. In the structure of resulting Eu-L-MCM-41, Eu3+ was chelated by BHPC, and the Eu-L complexes were anchored into the forming MCM-41 host by the reaction between the hydroxyl group and active Si-OH. The mesoporous material Eu-L-MCM-41 was characterized by UV, IR, small-angle X-ray diffraction (SAXRD) patterns, nitrogen adsorption/desorption isotherms, TGA and fluorescence spectra. The results indicate that ligand and Eu3+ have been introduced into the MCM-41 host, and Eu-L-MCM-41 exhibits characteristic luminescence of Eu3+.

Abstract:The luminescence behavior of the dibenzoyl methane europium(III) complexes (Eu(DBM)3) in sol–gel derived host materials have been investigated. The steady-state excitation and emission spectra and the time-resolved spectra of the 1% EuCl3 and 3% DBM co-doped gel indicated an efficient ligand-to-metal energy transfer. The Eu(DBM)3 complexes in the gel showed longer 5D0 lifetimes in comparison with Eu(DBM)3·3H2O complexes. The luminescence intensity of the 1% EuCl3 and 3% DBM co-doped gel decreased continuously with increasing temperature and time of heat treatment, which indicated the gradual decomposition of the Eu(DBM)3 complexes in the gel during heat treatment.

Abstract:Novel organic-inorganic luminescent mesoporous hybrid materials were assembled through the coordination reaction between europium nitrate with chelated quinoline-amide type ligands immobilized in mesoporous materials (MCM-41 and SBA-15) The mesoporous hybrid materials were characterized by elemental analysis. Fourier-transform infrared spectra, powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and nitrogen (N-2) adsorption-desorption The results demonstrated that the highly ordered mesoporous structures were retained after the complexes covalently bonded to the channels of the matrices The SBA-15-type hybrid materials, with pore sizes twice that of MCM-41, display more efficient emission due to the spatial confinement of the nanochannels of the mesoporous matrix This deduction is strengthened by the fact that the influences are more obvious for complexes including rigid end group ligands In addition, the Eu3+ complexes coordinated with ligands containing rigid end groups in MCM-41 matrices exhibit better photoluminescence stability upon exposure to ultraviolet light

Abstract:To modify the photoluminescence properties the Eu(DBM)3bath complexes were encapsulated into the sub-nanometer pores of aluminosilicates zeolites L and Y and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron micrographs (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) absorption spectra. The luminescent properties of the encapsulated composites (Eu-L and Eu-Y) were systematically studied. The results indicate that in both the two composites the crystal-field symmetry becomes lower, as a consequence, the 5D0-7F2 electronic-dipole transition relative to the 5D0-7F1 magnetic-dipole transition of Eu3+ increases in contrast to the pure complexes. The outer quantum efficiency of the Eu3+ emission and the photostability of Eu3+ are both improved considerably. The adsorption of water in the composites has influence on the thermostability and decay dynamics of the Eu3+ emission. In the composite Eu-L, which contains less water the thermostability of luminescence is improved considerably and the lifetime becomes longer in comparison to the pure complexes. Overall, zeolite L is a more ideal host material for modification of lanthanide complexes.

Abstract:The in situ synthesis processes and luminescence behaviors of the 2-pyridinecarboxylic acid europium (PA:Eu3+) complexes in sol–gel derived host materials have been investigated. The Raman scattering spectrum of the 1mol% EuCl3 and 3mol% PA co-doped gel was similar to that of the PA:Eu3+ complex powders that were synthesized in ethanol, which indicated that the PA:Eu3+ complexes have been in situ synthesized in the 1mol% EuCl3 and 3mol% PA co-doped gel. The excitation and the emission spectra of the 1mol% EuCl3 and 3mol% PA co-doped gels, which were similar to that of the PA:Eu3+ complex powders, also indicated an efficient ligand-to-metal energy transfer which belonged to the complexes. The decay curve of the 1mol% EuCl3 and 3mol% PA co-doped gel can be fitted to a double-exponential function. After the gel was heated at 90°C for 12h, the decay curve can be fitted to a single-exponential function due to vaporization of the most residual water in the gel. The dependence of luminescence intensity and the decay time of x% EuCl3 and 3x% PA co-doped gels that were heated at 90°C for 12h on various concentrations of the EuCl3 and PA were also investigated. The luminescence intensity and the decay time reached a maximum for 1mol% EuCl3 and 3mol% PA co-doped gel that were heated at 90°C for 12h.
Construction, Characterization, and Photoluminescence of Mesoporous Hybrids Containing Europium(III) Complexes Covalently Bonded to SBA-15 Directly Functionalized by Modified Β-Diketone

Abstract:Novel organic-inorganic mesoporous luminescent hybrid materials were prepared by linking the binary and ternary Eu3+ complexes to the functionalized ordered mesoporous SBA-15 with the modified 1-(2-naphthoyl)-3,3,3-trifluoroacetonate (NTA) by co-condensation of tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) in the presence of Pluronic P123 surfactant as a template. 1-(2-Naphthoyl)-3,3,37trifluoroacetonate (NTA) grafted to the coupling agent 3-(triethoxysilyl)propyl isocyanate (TEPIC) was used as the precursor for the preparation of mesoporous materials. SBA-15 consisting of the highly luminescent ternary complex Eu(NTA)(3)bpy covalently bonded to the silica-based network, which was designated as Eu(NTA-SBA-15)(3)bpy, was obtained by introducing EuCl3 and 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy) complex into the hybrid material via a ligand-exchange reaction. In addition, for comparison, SBA-15 doped with Eu(NTA)(3)center dot 2H(2)O and Eu(NTA)(3)bpy complexes and SBA-15 covalently bonded with the binary Eu3+ complex with NTA ligand were also synthesized, denoted as Eu(NTA)(3)/SBA-15, Eu(NTA)(3)bpy/SBA-15, and Eu(NTA-SBA-15)(3), respectively. The luminescence properties of these resulting materials were characterized in detail, and the results reveal that they all have high surface area, uniformity in the mesostructures, and crystallinity. The efficient intramolecular energy transfer in mesoporous material Eu(NTA-SBA-15)(3)bpy mainly occurs between the modified. ligand NTA-Si and the central Eu3+ ion. Furthermore, Eu(NTA-SBA-15)(3)bpy exhibited the characteristic emission of Eu3+ ion under UV irradiation with higher D-5(0) luminescence quantum efficiency than the pure Eu(NTA)(3)bpy complex and the other materials. Thermogravimetric analysis on the mesoporous material Eu(NTA-SBA-15)(3)bpy indicated that the thermal stability of the complex was improved as it was covalently bonded to the host SBA-15 matrix.

Abstract:Meso-structured silica monoliths using PEG (PEG=polyethylene glycol) as a low-cost template and synthesized via sol–gel methods were used as host materials for incorporation of europium complexes Eu(BA)3Phen (BA=benzoic acid and Phen=1,10-phenanthroline). The meso-structured silica was silylated by 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) or 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GPTMS) before wet impregnation. Samples were characterized by BET, diffuse reflectance (DR) spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy and fluorescence measurements. The results showed that the emission quantum efficiency of GPTMS silylated meso-structured silica with larger pore size was up to 44.6%. Also, the lifetime measurement showed the complex encapsulated in this rigid matrix had longer lifetime than the pure complex in solid or liquid.

Abstract:Rare earth complex Eu(phen)2Cl3·2H2O synthesized by precipitation method was incorporated into MCM-41 mesoporous molecular sieves which were synthesized via a hydrothermal method. Hybrid inorganic/organic mesoporous luminescent material Eu(phen)2/MCM-41 has been characterized by XRD, TEM, IR, UV-visible spectra and fluorescence spectra. Results indicated that the hybrid mesoporous material has typical structure of MCM-41 and retains the same pore structure as MCM-41 after the assembly process. The fluorescence spectra of these materials present a series of narrow lines assigned to 5D0 → 7F0,1,2,3,4 transitions. The high emission intensity observed is a promising property for application of the rare earth complex in technological luminescent devices.

Abstract:The CH3-(SBA-15) and (SBA-15)-Eu2O3 host-gust nanocomposite materials were synthesized by post-synthesis method, ultrasonic synthesis method (UM) and ultrasonic assisted synthesis methods (UAM). The X-ray diffraction (XRD), infrared spectroscopy (IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM) analysis and nitrogen adsorption-desorption method were used to observe the structure, the surface morphology and the chemical composites of the prepared products. The luminescent properties, and the luminescent intensity of the samples were studied by excitation and emission spectra. The results showed that, for the (SBA-15)-Eu2O3 composite materials, the hexagonal pore structure of the SBA-15 molecular sieve was maintained. The luminescent intensity of the UM sample was about 6 times higher than that of the mechanical mixture of SBA-15 and nano-Eu2O3 (5 wt %). The excitation spectrum intensity was 2 times higher than that of the mechanical mixture.

Abstract:Luminescent materials have been prepared by wet impregnation of Europium (III) dibenzoylmethane complexes in either non-silylated or silylated mesoporous MCM-48 silica. Silylation and incorporation of the Eu (III) complex were confirmed by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, N2-sorption, X-ray diffraction and Infrared spectroscopy. The luminescence properties were investigated at room and high temperatures up to 200°C. Information on host–guest interactions were collected by analyzing the optical characteristics of the Eu (III) ions in the different media. In particular, the intensity parameter Ω2 is confirmed to be a useful spectroscopic probe for Eu (III) first coordination shell interaction. The role of the O2−—Eu3+ charge transfer band and the impact of the silylation on the luminescence properties at room and high temperatures is demonstrated.

Abstract:The title complex, [Eu(DBM) 4]MPy (DBM: dibenzoylmethane; Mpy: 2 methylpyridinium), has been synthesised, and the triboluminescence for this complex was firstly observed. The photoluminescence at room temperature was studied. The spectral data showed that the Eu(Ⅲ) ion is not in site of symmetry. Some impurities may be responsible for its triboluminescent activity.

Abstract:The mesoporous luminescent materials with streamline shape (as ellipsoids) as biological probes can be importantly and potentially used in biology and medicine fields. The ellipsoidal mesoporous SBA-15 silica with a tunable aspect ratio were synthesized by changing the ethanol amount in the synthesis solution. Hexagonal ordered mesoporous Eu3+-doped yttrium vanadate (YVO4:Eu3+) ellipsoids were successfully synthesized through the nanocasting route with a Y(NO3)(3)/Eu(NO3)(3)/NH4VO3/HNO3/ethanol solution as a guest unit and mesoporous SBA-15 silica ellipsoids as the hard template host, and characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, low-temperature N-2 adsorption and photo-luminescence (PL) spectra. The prepared mesoporous YVO4:Eu3+ ellipsoids possess larger surface area and pore volume, uniform pore size, and exhibits strong red emission at 618 nm excited by UV light. When the concentration of Eu3+ dopant is 5 mol.% (Y/Eu = 95/5), the highest PL intensity can be reached. (C) 2015 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Eu(DBM)(3)Phen-embedded silica nanospheres were synthesized through a simple water-in-oil (W/O) microemulsion method. TEM observation indicates that the nanospheres are approximate to 40nm in diameter and with a uniform core/shell structure. Compared to Eu(DBM)(3)Phen complex, the nano-hybrid-spheres shows similar emissions of Eu 31 ions under 355-nm excitation. By dynamic analysis at low temperature and laser selective excitation spectra, we found that there are two luminescent centers formed in the nanohybrids.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel luminescent organic–inorganic hybrid material containing covalently bonded ternary europium complex in mesoporous silica MCM-41 has been successfully prepared by co-condensation of tetrethoxysilane (TEOS) and the modified ligand 2-phenyl-1H-imidazo[4,5-f][1,10]phen-3-(triethoxysilyl)propylcarbamate (PIP-Si) in the presence of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) surfactant as template. PIP-Si containing 1,10-phenanthroline covalently grafted to 3-(triethoxysilyl)propyl isocyanate is used not only as a precursor but also as the second ligand for Eu(TTA)3·2H2O (TTA: 2-thenoyltrifluoroacetate) complex to prepare a novel functionalized mesoporous material. The resulted mesoporous composite materials, which demonstrate strong characteristic emission lines of Eu3+5D0-7FJ (J=0, 1, 2, 3, 4), were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), small-angle X-ray diffraction, excited-state decay analysis. Emission intensity of the Eu(III) complex covalently linked to MCM-41 (Eu-MCM-41) increases with the increasing irradiation time, demonstrating better photostability compared with both pure Eu(III) complex and physically incorporated sample.

Abstract:Flower-like Mg3B2O6:Eu3+ hierarchical microspheres, with an average diameter of 2.0 similar to 2.5 mu m, were successfully synthesized via a simple precipitation method using poly (vinyl pyrrolidone) as template and followed by a subsequent heat treatment. The structure, morphology, composition and photoluminescence (PL) properties of as-prepared and calcined samples were systematically characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM and PL spectra, respectively. The resultant products presented a strong characteristic of red emission at 612 nm corresponding to (5)D(0 ->)7F(2) of the Eu3+ transition under ultraviolet excitation at 393 nm, which may open a wide door for its applications especially in fluorescent lamps, display systems, and optoelectronic devices. Besides, we demonstrated the morphology, concentration of Eu3+ as well as calcination temperature had a great effect on the PL properties of the microspheres.
