Abstract:In the 21st century, the trend of globalization expands widely and rapidly. As one of the most important drives, foreign direct investment (FDI) has been paid more and more attention for its effects on constructing the technological innovation capability and sustainable strategic competitiveness in the less developed countries. Now there are two different points of view on the effect from the entering FDI to the technological development in China: positive spillovers or negative spillovers. In fact the final result in the most of the empirical researches is an output mixed the two-sided effects. We can not only judge FDI by the final result, but also anatomize it. The research uses production function model based on panel data from 37 industrial enterprises in China from year 1998 to 2003. Most data comes from the yearbook of Chinese Industry and the yearbook of science and technology of China. It supposes that the technological spillovers follows the path from the FDI to the industrial innovative input which includes ″input structure″, ″input intensity″, then to the industrial innovative output which includes ″innovative effect″, ″innovative efficiency″, ″export competitive ability″, ″marginalization risk″. In the first part, the direct model discusses the relationship between innovative output and FDI. There are positive relationships between the entering of FDI and innovation effect, innovation efficiency and export in short time. But from the view of technological marginalization, FDI has strong influences on local companies' market reduction, technological dependence in the long run, and R&D capabilities' shrinking. In the second part, the indirect model discusses the relationship of the two innovative output variables mediated by innovative input intensity and innovative input structure. FDI impacts indirectly on innovative efficiency through influencing on innovative input intensity of the industry. And the structure of innovative fund source influences the usage efficiency of the fund and the innovative efficiency. It also partly moderates the relationship between FDI and innovative efficiency. In further study, it finds out that market growth, market competition and technological appropriation have partial mediating effects on the relationship between FDI and innovative input intensity of the industry.In summary, more and more technologies of the industries in China will come from outward sources in the future. The globalization of manufacturing has opened the opportunity window of learning for Chinese companies. And it brings big challenges at the same time.

Abstract:This article assesses whether and how the effects of spatial spillovers contribute to regional innovation growth in China. Using provincial-level data over the 2003-2011 period and employing a spatial Durbin model (SDM), the empirical results reveal strong spillover effects in both the input and output processes of regional innovation. An area can benefit from innovation in the surrounding areas through channels that include innovation output, R&D input, and agglomeration economies. By contrast, externalities from absorptive capacity are spatially localized, and foreign direct investment (FDI) can lead to negative spillover effects in this context. Moreover, different types of patented innovations exhibit a variety of patterns.

Abstract:Literature on transboundary knowledge flows has primarily focused on foreign direct investment (FDI) spillover effects in emerging economies during the last decades. Little has been known, however, about whether or not and how foreign firms learn from local firms to enhance their innovation performance. The existing literature on clusters lays much emphasis on the variety of knowledge sources in the process of innovation, but it largely ignores the social and institutional barriers to transboundary knowledge flows. This article argues that for foreign firms operating in emerging economies, the issues about legitimacy and liability of foreignness might inhibit outsiders from effective knowledge sourcing; therefore, the social and institutional structure in a region plays a no less significant role than knowledge per se. Based on a large-scale firm-level database from China's information and communications technology (ICT) industry, this article reveals that local innovativeness of indigenous firms significantly stimulates and enhances innovation of foreign firms. It is interesting to find that whereas related variety of a region fails to exert positive influences, ownership diversity and a low extent of market concentration that reflect the openness of a local innovation system significantly affect innovation performance of foreign firms. It calls for more studies on local institutional and social construction of interfirm knowledge flows.

Abstract:Based on panel data,the paper utilizes spatial econometrics knowledge production function models to study the influence of the university knowledge spillovers on the innovation performance of large and medium-sized enterprises at two aspects of patent application and new product development.The study indicates: the large and medium-sized enterprises only have spatial relativity on the innovation of new product development;the contribution of institutions of higher education to enterprises relies on the scale of cooperation between the university and the enterprises,and the contribution to patent innovation are larger than the contribution to new product development innovation;the new product development in the neighboring areas play the negative effect on "replacement" and "expulsion".On the basis of above conclusions,this paper brings forward some suggestions of the corresponding policies.

Abstract:Knowledge spillovers have been used to explain the increased rate of innovation that is found in R&D clusters. We estimate a knowledge production function for industrial R&D Activities using China's Provincial data. Controlling for R&D expenditures, R&D personnel and R&D expenditure by colleges, We investigate the link at a regional level between localization of knowledge spillovers and R&D activities clustering. The results indicate that R&D spillovers are localized and it has an obvious spatial attenuation effect. © 2008 IEEE.

Abstract:While a great deal of literature has paid attention to knowledge spillover on innovation, this study argues that geographical knowledge search that lays much emphasis on firm strategies merits more attention. This paper examines the effect of geographical knowledge search strategies, such as local/non-local search depth and local/non-local search breadth on product innovation. We reveal that while local search depth and breadth as well as non-local search breadth exert a significant influence, non-local search depth produces a negative impact on product innovation. Our research suggests that clustering firms' geographical knowledge search strategies and R&D intensity should be highlighted to understand their product innovation.

Abstract:As China is moving toward an innovation-driven economy, this paper offers new insights for both policymakers and investors to optimize the effectiveness of investment performance. This paper studies China's provincial research activities with a focus on the spillover-induced productivity and efficiency change. The results show that spillovers as a result of inflow of foreign investment contribute positively to the performance of overall research activities, however, the productivity effects vary across regions. Our analysis also indicates that highly skewed distribution of FDI leads to a less improved innovation efficiency in FDI-rich provinces. Future innovation policy should adjust the investment profiles based on the preferential innovation output on one hand, and optimize the complementary policy for FDI on the other hand to reduce inefficiency and the potential negative effects of knowledge spillovers. Inter-provincial governmental cooperation is necessary to resolve the uneven distribution of FDI and improve the innovation efficiency in both FDI-poor and rich regions.

Abstract:The increasing complexity of innovation has triggered a plenty of studies on external knowledge sourcing and innovation performance of clustering firms. While existing economic geography literature places much emphasis on the geographical dimension of knowledge flows, the relative importance of different types of knowledge sources and their geographical identity in innovation have been largely undervalued. Drawing upon a firm-level questionnaire survey and face-to-face interviews on the software firms in a Chinese regional economy, we reveal that, contrary to the conventional wisdom of distance decay and geographical proximity, no significant difference is found between local and non-local suppliers, customers, and rivals as the external sources of knowledge for firm innovation. Local universities and research institutions are identified by firms as the better and more effective sources of knowledge than others outside of the region. Whereas suppliers and rivals make no significant difference to firm innovation, knowledge obtained from customers is reported to be highly significant to the innovation performance of software firms. Findings of this research cast doubts over the prevailing uncritical and undifferentiated perception of the functioning of geography and inter-firm linkages in the processes of firm innovation as well as the under-socialized understanding of knowledge flows between different agents.

Abstract:This article explores the relationship between knowledge sources at different levels and corporate innovation from the perspective of urban cluster, with a focus on enterprises. This paper conducted an empirical analysis of 375 listed companies in 27 cities within the Yangtze River Delta urban cluster in China from 2009 to 2019. The findings showed that: (1) Local scientific knowledge spillovers, mediated by industry relevance, positively influence firms’ innovation performance. This study verifies how spatial knowledge is dimensionally reduced from scientific spillovers to industrial technological innovation. (2) Emerging industries acquire relevant scientific knowledge for transformation from a broader regional scope. Regional knowledge creation in the Yangtze River Delta urban cluster has stimulated industrial innovation across various sectors, thereby enhancing the overall innovation capacity and level of the urban cluster. (3) Regional diversity significantly affects the process of transforming knowledge into innovation. This paper supports the existence of a unified spatial innovation network among heterogeneous spatial economic entities and emphasizes the innovation synergy from lower to higher levels within heterogeneous hierarchical innovation networks. Developing urban agglomeration strategies that leverage the resource advantages of industrial clusters and adjust industrial layouts is an important approach to promote innovation and economic growth.

Abstract:In recent decades, theoretical debate on firm innovation has considered particular forms of spatial clustering and foreign direct investment as almost mutually exclusive drivers. While cluster literature pays less attention to firm heterogeneity in ownership structure, FDI literature ignores the importance of geographical dimension in spillover effects. This study combines these two lines of theoretical inquiry to investigate regional FDI knowledge spillover effects on product innovation of China's indigenous electronic firms. It is found that localized innovative-related activities of foreign-invested firms significantly facilitate product innovation of domestic firms. However, FDI horizontal spillover is more important than vertical spillover and cross-sector rather than intra-sector knowledge is significant for indigenous innovation. FDI spillover effects can be reinforced by local innovative activities of domestic firms. This study highlights the significance of geographical proximity and relatively heterogeneous knowledge in FDI spillover effects on domestic innovation but questions the mutual trust relationship between foreign and domestic firms in a cluster.

Abstract:In this paper,based on the theory of regional innovation,we construct a model on the relationship between knowledge agglomeration and regional innovation,and develop an index system for evaluating the level of knowledge agglomeration and regional innovation.Then based on the data from the Statistical Yearbook,we evaluate and compare the level of knowledge agglomeration and regional innovation of China's 30 regions,and finally explore the relationship between knowledge agglomeration and regional innovation based on the result of statistical analysis.The results show that knowledge agglomeration can significantly affect regional innovation,but there is a certain lag during this process;besides,it is not entirely linear correlation between the level of knowledge agglomeration and regional innovation,the level of regional innovation is not always high while the level of its knowledge agglomeration is high,but the level of regional innovation is always low if the level of its knowledge agglomeration is low.

Abstract:This paper investigates the impact of returnee entrepreneurs and their knowledge spillovers on innovation in high-tech firms in China. Using panel data for 1318 high-tech firms in Beijing Zhongguancun Science Park (ZSP) we find that returnee entrepreneurs create a significant spillover effect that promotes innovation in other local high-tech firms. The extent of this spillover effect is positively moderated by the non-returnee firm's absorptive capacity approximated by the skill level of employees. Multinational enterprises' R&D activities positively affect the innovation intensity of non-returnee firms only when these local firms possess the sufficient level of absorptive capacity. Our findings have important implications for policy-makers and practitioners. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:This study critically examines the relevance of the perceived notions of localised production linkages, knowledge spillover and external technology transfer to the experiences of the growth of the ICT industry in China. The research is based on a major firm-level survey conducted in China’s three most important mega urban regions—Beijing, Shanghai-Suzhou and Shenzhen-Dongguan—where the bulk of the Chinese ICT industry is located. The results of the survey showed a distinct landscape of ICT industrial production in which each of the Chinese regions has functioned as the site of capital investment from different sources for different strategic interests. Despite a marked regional variation in ownership, industrial structure, market orientation and technological investment, firms in all regions have invariably reported internal development as the main source of core technology. A negative relationship existed between the level of technological innovation and external orientation in both capital investment and export production. No evidence has been found to verify the hypothesis that a higher level of technological innovation would co-exist with stronger production linkages and knowledge exchanges with both local firms and foreign-invested enterprises. A further analysis of the firms with different technological performance has highlighted the significance of regional setting, ownership, ability of capital mobilisation and corporate strategy and management in the process of technological innovation.
Empirical research on spillover effects of regional innovation——analysis based on dynamic panel model of Beyond knowledge production function

Abstract:Collecting data of Enterprise-university-institute cooperation,FDI and innovation related,using dynamic panel econometric model beyond the knowledge production function.The paper examines technology innovation spillovers about 30 provincial regions in China's during 1998-2008.Results show that : Enterprise-university-institute cooperation overflow is positive but not significant in short-term;significantly positive in medium-term,the effect is obvious;performance is significantly negative in the long term.FDI technology spillover is significantly positive in the short term,significantly negative medium-term,significantly positive in long-term.Based on this,the paper puts forward effective policy recommendations to enhance regional innovation capability.

Abstract:Space bounded of knowledge spillover has effects on the regional innovation performance which has attracted attention extensively.In this paper,the author takes the spatial effects into econometric model to investigate the impacts of knowledge spillover generated by spatial agglomeration of production activities on innovative output.In other words,MAR spillover,Jacobs' spillover and Porter externalities,which one is more important? The econometric analysis of 1993-1995 and 2005-2007 show that the specialization spillover presents consistent and positive effect in the two periods,and diversity spillover takes negative effect in the initial period but positive effect in 2005-2007,compared with the monopolistic market structure,competition has a more pronounced impact on the regional innovation performance.

Abstract:This paper studies on spatial spillover effect and its geographic boundary of explicit and im-plicit knowledge based on the perspective of geographic distance,using statistical data of China’ s 3 1 prov-inces from 2002 to 2012,and we get several finds.Firstly,there exists significant spatial spillover effect of explicit and implicit knowledge among the Chinese provinces,and spillover effect of explicit knowledge is greater than it of implicit knowledge.With increasing geographic distance,spillover effect of explicit and implicit knowledge all present downward trend,and spillover effect of explicit knowledge declines rapidly outside the range of 1 000 kilometers,spillover effect of implicit knowledge no longer exist outside the range of 1 100 kilometers.Compared with simply increasing R&D personnel and capital,promoting inter-action of R&D personnel and optimization of capital structure is more useful for regional knowledge growth.Finally,conclusions and policy recommendations expressed herein.

Abstract:Spillover is an important channel through which government innovation policies boost economic growth. Despite various firm-level analyses on the effectiveness of innovation subsidies, industry-level spillovers of such subsidies and determinants of their strength are not well-studied. Based on the sample of all the subsidized manufacturing and service industries in the Innovation Fund for Small and Medium Technology-based Firms (Innofund) program from 1999 to 2014, we examine the spillover effects of innovation subsidies and explore rich heterogeneities across regions and industries. We find significantly positive spillover effects of the innovation subsidies on the subsidized industries and their upstream and downstream industries regarding the firm number, employment and output growth. Furthermore, we find large vertical spillovers of subsidies from high-tech service sectors to manufacturing sectors for the first time. The spillovers work through market linkages, strengthened by marketization, decentralized governance, and interactions between different techno-industrial policies.

Abstract:Taking the endogenousinnovation effort(namely R&D) in new growth theories as a benchmark,the paper empirically investigates the impact of indigenous and international technology spillovers on the hightech industrial innovation in China based on the panel data from 1997 to 2006.The results indicate that,for indigenous technology spillover,research institutions like universities have positive effects on industrial innovation and the spillover of industrial cluster is featured by instability.As to international technology spillover,learningbyexporting can significantly promote the innovation,but the R&D activities of foreign investment have no effects on the innovation.From the angle of openingup degree,the international technology spillover increases as the openingup degree raises.From the angle of openingup mode,the foreign R&D oriented mode lacks effects on innovation,and the exportsoriented mode has significant effects on the innovation.The bringinginandgoingout mode has the most significant effects on the innovation.

Abstract:This paper extends endogenous economic growth models to incorporate knowledge externality. We explore whether spatial knowledge spillovers among regions exist, whether spatial knowledge spillovers promote regional innovative activities, and whether external knowledge spillovers affect the evolution of regional innovations in the long run. We empirically verify the theoretical results through applying spatial statistics and econometric models in the analysis of panel data of 31 regions in China. An accurate estimate of the range of knowledge spillovers is achieved and the convergence of regional knowledge growth rate is found, with clear evidences that developing regions benefit more from external knowledge spillovers than developed regions.
