Abstract:For two non-negative random variables X and Y, it is shown that if X is smaller than Y in the sense of the likelihood ratio order and either X or Y is of decreasing likelihood ratio, then the m-spacing Vk:n(m) of an X-sample is smaller than Wk:n(m), the m-spacing of a Y-sample, in terms of the likelihood ratio order. It is also proved that a similar result for the upshifted likelihood ratio order is valid. Finally, it is proved that the decreasing failure rate in average property of a population X is preserved by sample spacing Vk:n(1).

Abstract:Let X1:n⩽X2:n⩽⋯⩽Xn:n denote the order statistics from a sample of n independent random variables X1,…,Xn, all identically distributed as some X with support (0,∞). For a given positive integer m, m⩽n, let Dk,n(m)=Xm+k-1:n-Xk-1:n, k=1,…,n-m+1, denote the m-spacings of the X-sample, here X0:n=0. It is shown that if X has a logconvex [logconcave] density, then for k=1,…,n-m+1, Dk,n(m) is smaller [larger] than Dk+1,n+1(m) in the likelihood ratio order. It is also shown that if X has a logconcave density then, for k=2,…,n-m+1, Dk,n(m) is smaller than Dk-1,n(m+1) in the likelihood ratio order. If, instead, X is assumed to have an increasing failure rate and a decreasing reversed hazard rate, then this result can be weakened from the likelihood ratio order to the hazard rate order. We thus strengthen and complement some results in Misra and van der Meulen (J. Statist. Plann. Inference 115 (2003) 683.) and Hu and Wei (Statist. Probab. Lett. 53 (2001) 91.).

Abstract:The concept of generalized order statistics was introduced as a unified approach to a variety of models of ordered random variables. The purpose of this article is to investigate conditions on the distributions and the parameters on which the generalized order statistics are based to establish the likelihood ratio ordering of general p-spacings and the hazard rate and the dispersive orderings of (normalizing) simple spacings from two samples. We thus strengthen and complement some results in Franco, Ruiz, and Ruiz [7] and Belzunce, Mercader, and Ruiz [5]. This article is a continuation of Hu and Zhuang [10].

Abstract:Kochar and Xu (2009) proved that a parallel system with heterogeneous exponential component lifetimes is more skewed (according to the convex transform order) than the system with independent and identically distributed exponential components. In this paper we extend this study to the generalk-out-of-nsystems for the case when there are only two types of component in the system. An open problem proposed in Pǎltǎnea (2008) is partially solved.

It is shown that if X has a log-convex [log-concave] density function, then the general spacing vector (X-k1:n, X-k2:n-X-k1:n,..., X-kr:n-Xkr-1:n) is MTP2 [S-MRR2] whenever 1 <= k(1) < k(2) < ... < k(r) <= n and 1 <= r <= n. Multivariate likelihood ratio ordering of such general spacing vectors corresponding to two random samples is also considered. These extend some of the results in the literature for usual spacing vectors.

Abstract:A variety of statistics based on sample spacings has been studied in the literature for testing goodness-of-fit to parametric distributions. To test the goodness-of-fit to a nonparametric class of univariate shape-constrained densities, including widely studied classes such as k-monotone and log-concave densities, a likelihood ratio test with a working alternative density estimate based on the spacings of the observations is considered, and is shown to be asymptotically normal and distribution-free under the null, consistent under fixed alternatives, and admits bootstrap calibration. The distribution-freeness under the null comes from the fact that the asymptotic dominant term depends only on a function of the spacings of transformed outcomes that are uniformly distributed. Applications and extensions of theoretical results in the literature of shape-constrained estimation are required to show that the average log-density ratio converges to zero at a faster rate than the sample spacing term under the null, and diverges under the alternatives. Numerical studies are conducted to demonstrate that the test is applicable to various classes of shape-constrained densities and has a good balance between type-I error control under the null and power under alternative distributions.

Abstract:Multiplicative error models have become increasingly vital in geodesy because observations based on electromagnetic wave measurement techniques are often disturbed by multiplicative errors. Currently, research on multiplicative error models primarily focuses on accuracy evaluation, equation or inequality constraints, coefficient matrix pathology, and variance component estimation; however, the issue of outliers has yet to be systematically addressed. In light of this, this study addresses the outliers problem in multiplicative error models. Initially, we analyzed the impact of outliers on least squares and bias-corrected weighted least squares; the findings indicated that the impact on bias-corrected weighted least squares propagates via the least squares solution. Subsequently, we proposed an algorithm for detecting outliers in multiplicative error models. Finally, we statistically analyzed the algorithm's accuracy through simulation cases; the results confirm its feasibility and superiority.

Abstract:Comparison of two univariate distributions based on independent samples from them is a fundamental problem in statistics, with applications in a wide variety of scientific disciplines. In many situations, we might hypothesize that the two distributions are stochastically ordered, meaning intuitively that samples from one distribution tend to be larger than those from the other. One type of stochastic order that arises in economics, biomedicine, and elsewhere is the likelihood ratio order, also known as the density ratio order, in which the ratio of the density functions of the two distributions is monotone non-decreasing. In this article, we derive and study the nonparametric maximum likelihood estimator of the individual distributions and the ratio of their densities under the likelihood ratio order. Our work applies to discrete distributions, continuous distributions, and mixed continuous-discrete distributions. We demonstrate convergence in distribution of the estimator in certain cases, and we illustrate our results using numerical experiments and an analysis of a biomarker for predicting bacterial infection in children with systemic inflammatory response syndrome.

Abstract:Finite mixture model is a promising statistical model in investigating the heterogeneity of population. For multivariate non-Gaussian density estimation and approximation, in this paper, we consider to use multivariate exponential power mixture models. We propose the penalized-likelihood method with a generalized EM algorithm to estimate locations, scale matrices, shape parameters, and mixing probabilities. Order selection is achieved simultaneously. Properties of the estimated order have been derived. Although we mainly focus on the unconstrained scale matrix type in multivariate exponential power mixture models, three more parsimonious types of scale matrix have also been considered. Performance based on simulation and real data analysis implies the parsimony of the exponential power mixture models, and verifies the consistency of order selection.

Abstract:Multivariate time series (MTS) datasets are common in various financial, multimedia and medical applications. MTS samples which differ significantly from the remaining MTS samples are referred to as outliers. In this paper, the outlier mining method based on local sparsity coefficient for MTS is proposed. An extended Frobenius norm is used to compare the similarity between MTS samples, K-NN searches are performed by using two-phase sequential scan. MTS samples that are not possible outlier candidates are pruned, which reduces the number of computations and comparisons. The datasets of stock market and Australian Sign Language are used for outlier mining, the results show the effectiveness of the algorithm. © 2006 IEEE.
