Research Progress and Prospect of Urban Geography Methodologies and Methods

Abstract:The methodologies and methods of urban geography were influenced by trend of thought in philosophy,related disciplines and technological progress.By positively understanding available western theories and absorbing the content closely related with local contexts hierarchically,this study have built up multiple ways on methodology research,emphasizing the combination of method research with practical cases,and the consideration of classical methods and frontier ones.In term of discipline system,this research introduced the new methodologies such as behaviorism,structuralism,and postmodernism,overcoming the defect that Chinese urban geography only paid attention on empiricism and positivism.In the aspect of knowledge sharing and research training,symposiums on methodological discussions were organized creating a positive theoretical debate atmosphere,and a research team mainly composed of young and mid-aged researchers was formed.Finally,this research pointed out future directions on how to develop Chinese urban geography,including the combination of scientism and pragmatism,the unification of endogenous geography and exogenous geography as well as the construction of platforms on geographical resources and networks of researchers.
