Abstract:The current preparation technologies of DL-α-alanine were reported.A new production technology of DL-α-alanine by muti-solvent recycled synthesis and feedback ion-exchange membrane separation was proposed. This method had the advantages of avoiding the pollution of methanol, using the clean energy and decreasing energy loss by 50%,and had the easy operation ,low cost and little industrial waste. The application of DL-α-alanine was introduced.

Abstract:Amino acid is a type of micro-molecular metabolite essential for the maintenance of life.As a signal transducing molecule,amino acid extensively participates in the maintenance and regulation of glucose and lipid metabolism homeostasis.Previous research has confirmed the crucial role of amino acid,especially branched chain amino acid(BCAA;e.g.,leucine) in the regulation of glucose/lipid and energy homeostasis.The metabolic control center hypothalamus,as well as multiple periphery organs correlated with glucose and lipid metabolism(such as liver,pancreas,white adipose tissue,brown adipose tissue,gastrointestinal tract) can sense the level of amino acid in external environment,and regulate glucose/lipid and energy metabolism.What is more,key signal transduction pathways affected by amino acid in the modulation of glucose and lipid metabolism have been well established,such as mTOR/S6K,GCN2/ATF4 pathway.In the view of constant increase of chronic metabolic diseases such as type 2 diabetes,further exploring on amino acid nutrient sensing and its metabolic control on glucose and lipid metabolism will provide significant guidance for the prevention and control of metabolic diseases.

Abstract:Gut microbiota is considered as the cornerstone of maintaining the health of human host, because it not only helps to obtain nutrition and energy from the food, but also regulates the energy metabolism through the metabolites produced, which plays an important role in the occurrence and development of various metabolic diseases. In recent years, with the development of science and technology, hypoglycemic treatment has been gradually promoted, safer and more efficient hypoglycemic drugs have been emerging, including sulfonylureas, biguanides, glinides, α-glucosidase inhibitors, dipeptidyl peptidase Ⅳ inhibitors, glucagon like peptide-1 receptor agonists, sodium glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors and various types of insulin preparations. A large number of studies have proved that intestinal flora may be one of the targets for hypoglycemic drugs to control blood glucose. In this article, we aim to review the effects of hypoglycemic drugs on the composition of intestinal flora and the regulation of nutrition and energy metabolism, and provide reference for future researches on mechanism and target of new antidiabetic drugs.

Abstract:Global demand for macroalgal and microalgal foods is growing, and algae are increasingly being consumed for functional benefits beyond the traditional considerations of nutrition and health. There is substantial evidence for the health benefits of algal-derived food products, but there remain considerable challenges in quantifying these benefits, as well as possible adverse effects. First, there is a limited understanding of nutritional composition across algal species, geographical regions, and seasons, all of which can substantially affect their dietary value. The second issue is quantifying which fractions of algal foods are bioavailable to humans, and which factors influence how food constituents are released, ranging from food preparation through genetic differentiation in the gut microbiome. Third is understanding how algal nutritional and functional constituents interact in human metabolism. Superimposed considerations are the effects of harvesting, storage, and food processing techniques that can dramatically influence the potential nutritive value of algal-derived foods. We highlight this rapidly advancing area of algal science with a particular focus on the key research required to assess better the health benefits of an alga or algal product. There are rich opportunities for phycologists in this emerging field, requiring exciting new experimental and collaborative approaches.

Abstract:Phytoalexins are antimicrobial compounds of low molecular weight that are synthesized and accumulated in plants after exposure to microorganisms.Recent studies have revealed that phytoalexins carry a variety of nutrition and have numerous biological functions including antioxidant activity,anti-inflammation activity and anti-cancer activity.Thus phytoalexins as a crucial secondary metabolite,have a great potential to be applied in the fields of functional food and dietary supplement.This paper was an overall study on the variety,beneficial property,elicitation and accumulation of phytoalexins in plants,which provided an evidence and a guideline for the selectivity of phytoalexins for food functional component.

Abstract:Plant can directly take up the intact amino acids, thus bypass the microbial mineralization of organic nitrogen. As an excellent carbon and nitrogen source, there exists competition for amino acid absorption between plant roots.and soil microorganisms. And the total flux of amino acids in soil may be enormous due to the extensive sources and short half-life. Studies on amino acid nitrogen nutritional contribution for plant by the technique of nitrogen isotopic tracer, has become a research topic in recent years ,which will help us better understand the principle of soil fertility. This paper summarized the recent researches on amino acid morphological characteristics in soil and its metabolic mechanism and nitrogen nutritional contribution for plant in different ecosystems, and discussed the present status and development trend of the amino acid circulation mechanism in the plant-soil-microorganism ecosystem and its bioavailability for plant. Finally, the topics of environmental regulating mechanism of amino acid bioavailability, amino acid carbon-nitrogen metabolism, and how to improve the field organic nitrogen management were all the core issues to be resolved.
Effects of Α-Linolenic Acid Intake on Blood Lipid Profiles：a Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials

Abstract:To investigate the effect of ALA intake on blood lipid profiles, including triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL-C) and ratio of TC to HDL-C. We systematically searched randomized controlled trials of ALA intervention on PubMed, Embase, Cochrane library and related references up to March 2018. The final values were calculated as weighted mean difference (WMD) by using a random effects model. Subgroup analysis and meta-regression were used to explore the source of heterogeneity. Generalized least square was performed for dose-response analysis. Forty-seven studies with 1305 individuals in the ALA arm and 1325 individuals in the control arm were identified. Compared with control group, dietary intake of ALA significantly reduced the concentrations of TG (WMD -0.101 mmol/L; 95% CI: -0.158 to -0.044 mmol/L;P = 0.001), TC (WMD -0.140 mmol/L; 95% CI: -0.224 to -0.056 mmol/L;P = 0.001), LDL-C (WMD -0.131 mmol/L; 95% CI: -0.191 to -0.071 mmol/L;P < 0.001), VLDL-C (WMD -0.121 mmol/L; 95% CI: -0.170 to -0.073 mmol/L;P < 0.001), TC/HDL-C ratio (WMD -0.165 mmol/L; 95% CI: -0.317 to -0.013 mmol/L;P = 0.033) and LDL-C/HDL-C ratio (WMD -0.158 mmol/L; 95% CI: -0.291 to -0.025 mmol/L;P = 0.02). There is no effect of ALA intake on HDL-C (WMD 0.008 mmol/L; 95% CI: -0.018 to 0.034 mmol/L;P = 0.541). Dose-response analysis indicated that 1 g per day increment of ALA was associated with a 0.0016 mmol/L, 0.0071 mmol/L, 0.0015 and 0.0061 mmol/L reduction in TG (95% CI: -0.0029 to -0.0002 mmol/L), TC (95% CI: -0.0085 to -0.0058 mmol/L), HDL-C (95% CI: -0.0020 to -0.0011 mmol/L) and LDL-C (95% CI: -0.0073 to -0.0049 mmol/L) levels, respectively. The effects of ALA intake on TG, TC and LDL-C concentrations were more obvious among Asian participants, and also more obvious on patients with hyperlipidemia or hyperglycemia compared to healthy individuals. Dietary ALA intervention improves blood lipid profiles by decreasing levels of TG, TC, LDL and VLDL-C. Our findings add to the evidence that increasing ALA intake could potentially prevent risk of cardiovascular diseases.

Abstract:α-linolenic acid (ALA, 18:3n-3) is a carboxylic acid composed of 18 carbon atoms and three cis double bonds, and is an essential fatty acid indispensable to the human body. This study aims to systematically review related studies on the dietary sources, metabolism, and pharmacological effects of ALA. Information on ALA was collected from the internet database PubMed, Elsevier, ResearchGate, Web of Science, Wiley Online Library, and Europe PMC using a combination of keywords including "pharmacology," "metabolism," "sources." The following findings are mainly contained. (a) ALA can only be ingested from food and then converted into eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid in the body. (b) This conversion process is relatively limited and affected by many factors such as dose, gender, and disease. (c) Pharmacological research shows that ALA has the anti-metabolic syndrome, anticancer, antiinflammatory, anti-oxidant, anti-obesity, neuroprotection, and regulation of the intestinal flora properties. (d) There are the most studies that prove ALA has anti-metabolic syndrome effects, including experimental studies and clinical trials. (e) The therapeutic effect of ALA will be affected by the dosage. In short, ALA is expected to treat many diseases, but further high quality studies are needed to firmly establish the clinical efficacy of ALA.

Abstract:Economic growth and health awareness spotlight opportunities and challenges in the food industry, particularly with decreasing arable land, climate change, dwindling freshwater resources, and pollution affecting traditional protein sources. Microalgae have emerged as a promising alternative, with higher protein content, better nutritional quality, and greater environmental resilience compared to conventional crops. They offer a protein balance comparable to meat, making them a sustainable protein source with health benefits like antioxidants, cardiovascular support, and anti-inflammatory properties. Improving the protein content of microalgae through optimized cultivation techniques is crucial to fully realize its potential as a novel food source. While there are already microalgae-based food products in the market, challenges remain in utilizing microalgal protein for widespread food production, emphasizing the need for further research. This review article explores the impact of microalgae culture conditions on protein content, the physicochemical and nutritional characteristics of microalgal protein, the health advantages of microalgal proteins and their derivatives, as well as research on separating and purifying microalgal proteins and their derivatives. It also delves into the current opportunities and obstacles of microalgal proteins and their derivatives as food, highlighting the potential for investigating the link between microalgal protein food and human health.

Abstract:Microalgae are rich in nutrients and bioactive substances, which can provide nutrients to the human body and have functions such as antioxidant, antibacterial, and immunomodulation. Microalgae are receiving more and more attention as a potential new source of food ingredients. However, the application of microalgae in food is still immature. This paper reviews the physiological active functions of polysaccharides, proteins, unsaturated fatty acids, pigments and other bioactive substances in microalgae, summarizes the current status of the application of microalgae in meat foods, pasta, additives and functional foods. At the end of the article, the existing problems and challenges, such as microalgae with special odor, complex processing, insufficient experimental data, etc., are systematically elaborated, and the outlook and suggestions are put forward to express the confidence in the development of microalgae as a novel raw material in the food industry. The whole article aims to provide theoretical references for the development of microalgae food and the exploration of new food resources.

Abstract:Alpha-ketoglutarate (AKG) is a key molecule in the Krebs cycle determining the overall rate of the citric acid cycle of the organism. It is a nitrogen scavenger and a source of glutamate and glutamine that stimulates protein synthesis and inhibits protein degradation in muscles. AKG as a precursor of glutamate and glutamine is a central metabolic fuel for cells of the gastrointestinal tract as well. AKG can decrease protein catabolism and increase protein synthesis to enhance bone tissue formation in the skeletal muscles and can be used in clinical applications. In addition to these health benefits, a recent study has shown that AKG can extend the lifespan of adult Caenorhabditis elegans by inhibiting ATP synthase and TOR. AKG not only extends lifespan, but also delays age-related disease. In this review, we will summarize the advances in AKG research field, in the content of its physiological functions and applications.

Amino Acid Metabolism in the Liver: Nutritional and Physiological Significance

Abstract:The liver plays a central role in amino acid (AA) metabolism in humans and other animals. In all mammals, this organ synthesizes many AAs (including glutamate, glutamine, alanine, aspartate, asparagine, glycine, serine, and homoarginine), glucose, and glutathione (a major antioxidant). Similar biochemical reactions occur in the liver of birds except for those for arginine and glutamine hydrolysis, proline oxidation, and gluconeogenesis from AAs. In contrast to mammals and birds, the liver of fish has high rates of glutamate and glutamine oxidation for ATP production. In most animals (except for cats and possibly some of the other carnivores), the liver produces taurine from methionine or cysteine. However, the activity of this pathway is limited in human infants (particularly preterm infants) and is also low in adult humans as compared with rats, birds and livestock species (e.g., pigs, cattle and sheep). The liver exhibits metabolic zonation and intracellular compartmentation for ureagenesis, uric acid synthesis, and gluconeogenesis, as well as AA degradation and syntheses. Capitalizing on these extensive bases of knowledge, dietary supplementation with functional AAs (e.g., methionine, N-acetylcysteine, and glycine) to humans and other animals can alleviate or prevent oxidative stress and damage in the liver. Because liver diseases are common problems in humans and farm animals (including fish), much research is warranted to further both basic and applied research on hepatic AA metabolism and functions.
Determination of the Disulfide Bond Arrangement of Newcastle Disease Virus Hemagglutinin Neuraminidase

Abstract:Disulfide bonds stabilize the structure and functions of the hemagglutinin neuraminidase attachment glycoprotein (HN) of Newcastle disease virus. Until this study, the disulfide linkages of this HN and structurally similar attachment proteins of other members of the paramyxoviridae family were undefined. To define these linkages, disulfide-linked peptides were produced by peptic digestion of purified HN ectodomains of the Queensland strain of Newcastle disease virus, isolated by reverse phase high performance liquid chromatography, and analyzed by mass spectrometry. Analysis of peptides containing a single disulfide bond revealed Cys531-Cys542 and Cys172-Cys196 linkages and that HN ectodomains dimerize via Cys123. Another peptide, with a chain containing Cys186 linked to a chain containing Cys238, Cys247, and Cys251, was cleaved at Met249 with cyanogen bromide. Subsequent tandem mass spectrometry established Cys186-Cys247 and Cys238-Cys251 linkages. A glycopeptide with a chain containing Cys344 linked to a chain containing Cys455, Cys461, and Cys465 was treated sequentially with peptide-N-glycosidase F and trypsin. Further treatment of this peptide by one round of manual Edman degradation or tandem mass spectrometry established Cys344-Cys461 and Cys455-Cys465 linkages. These data, establishing the disulfide linkages of all thirteen cysteines of this protein, are consistent with published predictions that theparamyxoviridae HN forms a β-propeller structural fold.

Abstract:Amino acids are necessary for the survival, growth, development, reproduction and health of all organisms. They were traditionally classified as nutritionally essential or non-essential for mammals, birds and fish based on nitrogen balance or growth. It was assumed that all “non-essential amino acids (NEAA)” were synthesized sufficiently in the body to meet the needs for maximal growth and health. However, there has been no compelling experimental evidence to support this assumption over the past century. NEAA (e.g., glutamine, glutamate, proline, glycine and arginine) play important roles in regulating gene expression, cell signaling, antioxidative responses, neurotransmission, and immunity. Additionally, glutamate, glutamine and aspartate are major metabolic fuels for the small intestine to maintain its digestive function and protect its mucosal integrity. Therefore, based on new research findings, NEAA should be taken into consideration in revising the classical “ideal protein” concept and formulating balanced diets to improve protein accretion, food efficiency, and health in animals and humans.
