Abstract:Objective To assess the correlation between ultrasound(US)or MRI and surgery in grading knee cartilage degeneration. Methods Forty patients(41 knees)who underwent arthroscopic surgery or total knee arthroplasty were included in the study. The articular cartilages of all knees covering the center of the intercondylar groove(CIG)、medial trochlear portion(MTP)、lateral trochlear portion(LTP),the weight-bearing aspects of medial femoral condyle(MFC)and lateral femoral condyle(LFC)were examined ultrasonographically. In addition, eleven patients received MRI examination. The US and MRI results were compared with the arthroscopic or surgery findings. Results Cartilage degeneration grades determined both with US and MRI were correlated with surgical grades. The correlation coefficients were 0.703(P<0.05)and 0.778(P<0.05),respectively,for US and MRI.Conclusions US and MRI are reliable for grading of knee articular cartilage degeneration.
