The Establishment and Main Achievements of Xinhua Dictionary Agency

Abstract:Xinhua Dictionary Agency is a dictionary writing agency with professional knowledge of modern lexicography and modern linguistics. It was gradually established through the compilation of Xinhua Dictionary, a dictionary with high starting point, high meaning and high taste, under the careful organization and cultivation of many academic authorities, such as Ye Shengtao, Wei Jiangong, Lv Shuxiang, etc. Xinhua Dictionary Agency was established in August 1950, and was incorporated into the Institute of Languages of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in July 1956.Although it has only been established for a few years, it has made important contributions to the compilation of Xinhua Dictionary, a small dictionary of great significance in the history of modern education and dictionaries in China. Mr. Ye Shengtao’s diary, as well as relevant research documents of other scholars, records the establishment and working process of Xinhua Dictionary Agency. In addition to the Xinhua Dictionary, the achievements of Xinhua Dictionary Agency also compiled its concise version of “Examples of the Use of Common Words”（later renamed “Common Words”）.
