Abstract:We regard the elementary weight function as a mapping from input to output, so that the mappings allow us to derive the order conditions for a given method more easily and concisely. This paper presents the order conditions of one-step Runge–Kutta methods, Runge–Kutta-type methods with derivatives, a class of two-step Runge–Kutta methods and three-step Runge–Kutta methods, based on the elementary weight mappings, the composition formula of two mappings as well as the mappings I,Dr,E(ν) defined on the set T of all rooted trees from an input to an output. It is pointed out that the order conditions can be easily achieved for linear multistep methods, and second-derivative linear multistep methods of order p, and it suffices to consider only bushy trees of order up to p together with the empty tree 0̸ for a linear multistep method, or a second-derivative linear multistep method of order p.

Abstract:This centenary history of Runge-Kutta methods contains an appreciation of the early work of Runge, Heun, Kutta, and Nyström and a survey of some significant developments of these methods over the last hundred years. In particular, the order conditions, as they are now understood, will be outlined, as will the introduction and practical implementation of implicit Runge-Kutta methods, the use of linear and nonlinear stability analysis in the assessment of Runge-Kutta methods, and the theory and applications of the composition of methods. Of the many further developments that have arisen, most are discussed only briefly; however, the recent interest in Runge-Kutta methods for Hamiltonian systems will be surveyed in more detail.

Abstract:A simple and elementary proof of Butcher's theorem on the order conditions of Runge-Kutta methods is presented. It is based on a recursive definition of rooted trees and avoids combinatorial tools such as labelings and Faa di Bruno's formula. This strictly recursive approach can easily and elegantly be implemented using modern computer algrebra systems like Mathematica. The full but short source code is included and applied to some instructive examples.

Abstract:Traditionally, an explicit Runge–Kutta method of order three requires three evaluations of function and an explicit Runge–Kutta method of order four requires four evaluations of function. In this paper, a class of Runge–Kutta processes of order three and order four with reduced evaluations of function are proposed. The numerical experiments shows that these new Runge–Kutta processes are more attractive than the traditional ones.

Abstract:In this paper we present a new family of extended Runge-Kutta formulae in which, just like in Enright's methods, it is assumed that the user will evaluate both f and f' readily when solving the autonomous system y' = f(y) numerically. This means that we introduce some new parameters in the extended Runge-Kutta-like formulae in order to enhance the order of accuracy of the solutions using evaluations of both f and f', instead of the evaluations of f only. Moreover, if f' is approximated by a difference quotient of past and current evaluations of f, the order of convergence can be retained. The resulting two-step Runge-Kutta method can be regarded as replacing the function evaluations of f' with approximations of f'. Specifically, the proposed formulae with f' are more efficient for cases where f' is not more expensive to evaluate than f and the proposed 'derivative-free' formulae are more attractive for use when past values of f are available. Furthermore error estimates and step-choose strategies are considered for the 'derivative-free' extended Runge-Kutta methods.

Abstract:In this paper, we develop explicit three-derivative two-step Runge–Kutta (ThDTSRK) schemes, and propose a simpler general form of the order accuracy conditions (p≤7) by Albrecht's approach, compared to the order conditions in terms of rooted trees. The parameters of the general high-order ThDTSRK methods are determined by utilizing the order conditions. We establish a theory for the A-stability property of ThDTSRK methods and identify optimal stability coefficients. Moreover, ThDTSRK methods can achieve the intended order of convergence using fewer stages than other schemes, making them cost-effective for solving the ordinary differential equations.

Abstract:In recent years, many positivity-preserving schemes for initial value problems have been constructed by modifying a Runge--Kutta (RK) method by weighting the right-hand side of the system of differential equations with solution-dependent factors. These include the classes of modified Patankar--Runge--Kutta (MPRK) and Geometric Conservative (GeCo) methods. Compared to traditional RK methods, the analysis of accuracy and stability of these methods is more complicated. In this work, we provide a comprehensive and unifying theory of order conditions for such RK-like methods, which differ from original RK schemes in that their coefficients are solution-dependent. The resulting order conditions are themselves solution-dependent and obtained using the theory of NB-series, and thus, can easily be read off from labeled N-trees. We present for the first time order conditions for MPRK and GeCo schemes of arbitrary order; For MPRK schemes, the order conditions are given implicitly in terms of the stages. From these results, we recover as particular cases all known order conditions from the literature for first- and second-order GeCo as well as first-, second- and third-order MPRK methods. Additionally, we derive sufficient and necessary conditions in an explicit form for 3rd and 4th order GeCo schemes as well as 4th order MPRK methods. We also present a new 4th order MPRK method within this framework and numerically confirm its convergence rate.

Abstract:In this paper, extended Runge–Kutta–Nyström-type methods for the numerical integration of perturbed oscillators with low frequencies are presented, which inherit the framework of RKN methods and make full use of the special feature of the true flows for both the internal stages and the updates. Following the approach of J. Butcher, E. Hairer and G. Wanner, we develop a new kind of tree set to derive order conditions for the extended Runge–Kutta–Nyström-type methods. The numerical stability and phase properties of the new methods are analyzed. Numerical experiments are accompanied to show the applicability and efficiency of our new methods in comparison with some well-known high quality methods proposed in the scientific literature.

Abstract:Nonlinear parabolic equations are central to numerous applications in science and engineering, posing significant challenges for analytical solutions and necessitating efficient numerical methods. Exponential integrators have recently gained attention for handling stiff differential equations. This paper explores exponential Runge--Kutta methods for solving such equations, focusing on the simplified form $u^{\prime}(t)+A u(t)=B u(t)$, where $A$ generates an analytic semigroup and $B$ is relatively bounded with respect to $A$. By treating $A$ exactly and $B$ explicitly, we derive error bounds for exponential Runge--Kutta methods up to third order. Our analysis shows that these methods maintain their order under mild regularity conditions on the initial data $u_0$, while also addressing the phenomenon of order reduction in higher-order methods. Through a careful convergence analysis and numerical investigations, this study provides a comprehensive understanding of the applicability and limitations of exponential Runge--Kutta methods in solving linear parabolic equations involving two unbounded and non-commuting operators.

Discovering New Runge-Kutta Methods Using Unstructured Numerical Search

Abstract:Runge-Kutta methods are a popular class of numerical methods for solving ordinary differential equations. Every Runge-Kutta method is characterized by two basic parameters: its order, which measures the accuracy of the solution it produces, and its number of stages, which measures the amount of computational work it requires. The primary goal in constructing Runge-Kutta methods is to maximize order using a minimum number of stages. However, high-order Runge-Kutta methods are difficult to construct because their parameters must satisfy an exponentially large system of polynomial equations. This paper presents the first known 10th-order Runge-Kutta method with only 16 stages, breaking a 40-year standing record for the number of stages required to achieve 10th-order accuracy. It also discusses the tools and techniques that enabled the discovery of this method using a straightforward numerical search.

Abstract:In this paper, we develop a new class of conservative continuous-stage stochastic Runge-Kutta methods for solving stochastic differential equations with a conserved quantity. The order conditions of the continuous-stage stochastic Runge-Kutta methods are given based on the theory of stochastic B-series and multicolored rooted tree. Sufficient conditions for the continuous-stage stochastic Runge-Kutta methods preserving the conserved quantity of stochastic differential equations are derived in terms of the coefficients. Conservative continuous-stage stochastic Runge-Kutta methods of mean square convergence order 1 for general stochastic differential equations, as well as conservative continuous-stage stochastic Runge-Kutta methods of high order for single integrand stochastic differential equations, are constructed. Numerical experiments are performed to verify the conservative property and the accuracy of the proposed methods in the longtime simulation.

Abstract:In this paper we consider numerical methods which differ from Runge-Kutta methods in that they are multivalue and have a greater stage order than is possible with explicit Runge-Kutta methods. On the other hand they share many other properties with one-step methods. In particular, they have stability properties as for Runge-Kutta methods and it is easy to start the methods and to change stepsize. Because of the high stage order, continuous output is easier to achieve than for Runge-Kutta methods and this gives them a potential for the solution of delay problems as well as for ordinary differential equations. These new methods will be known as “ARK” or “Almost Runge-Kutta” methods. Even though they exist for orders at least as high as 6, we will concentrate here on methods of order 4, for which we present four sample methods. For one of these methods, we will present some numerical results for some initial value ordinary differential equation problems and some delay differential equations, illustrating various features of the new methods.

Abstract:Hamiltonian systems are one of the most important class of dynamical systems with a geometric structure called symplecticity and the numerical algorithms which can preserve such geometric structure are of interest. In this article we study the construction of symplectic (partitioned) Runge-Kutta methods with continuous stage, which provides a new and simple way to construct symplectic (partitioned) Runge-Kutta methods in classical sense. This line of construction of symplectic methods relies heavily on the expansion of orthogonal polynomials and the simplifying assumptions for (partitioned) Runge-Kutta type methods.

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Numerical Analysis, Volume 62, Issue 1, Page 48-72, February 2024. Runge–Kutta (RK) methods may exhibit order reduction when applied to stiff problems. For linear problems with time-independent operators, order reduction can be avoided if the method satisfies certain weak stage order (WSO) conditions, which are less restrictive than traditional stage order conditions. This paper outlines the first algebraic theory of WSO, and establishes general order barriers that relate the WSO of a RK scheme to its order and number of stages for both fully-implicit and DIRK schemes. It is shown in several scenarios that the constructed bounds are sharp. The theory characterizes WSO in terms of orthogonal invariant subspaces and associated minimal polynomials. The resulting necessary conditions on the structure of RK methods with WSO are then shown to be of practical use for the construction of such schemes.

Abstract:A family of new iteration methods without employing derivatives is proposed in this paper. We have proved that these new methods are quadratic convergence. Their efficiency is demonstrated by numerical experiments. The numerical experiments show that our algorithms are comparable to well-known methods of Newton and Steffensen. Furthermore, combining the new method with bisection method we construct another new high-order iteration method with nice asymptotic convergence properties of the diameters (bn − an).

Abstract:This article presents the discovery of an explicit 16-stage Runge–Kutta method that numerically satisfies the Runge–Kutta order conditions (in Butcher form) to 10th order, conjecturally improving the best-known number of stages in an explicit 10th-order Runge–Kutta method from 17 to 16. Unlike the vast majority of published Runge–Kutta methods, the method presented in this paper was not constructed via symbolic analysis or the use of simplifying assumptions, but instead by directly applying numerical optimization and root-finding algorithms to the order conditions. A naïve implementation of these algorithms would be made computationally infeasible by the considerable size and complex structure of the Butcher equations. However, we present a collection of software optimizations that greatly accelerate the evaluation of the Butcher equations and their derivatives while mitigating the effects of destructive cancellation, pushing these techniques within the realm of feasibility. While we do not have a formal proof of order, we present the results of numerical experiments to demonstrate that our method satisfies the Butcher equations to an accuracy of over 3000 decimal digits.

Abstract:This paper investigates a few forms of Runge–Kutta methods based on dynamic iteration for index-2 differential–algebraic equations. In particular, the convergence of iterative Runge–Kutta methods is proven for the complex systems.
