Abstract:In this paper, we prove that on every Finsler $n$-sphere $(S^n, F)$ with reversibility $\lambda$ satisfying $F^2<(\frac{\lambda+1}{\lambda})^2g_0$ and $l(S^n, F)\ge \pi(1+\frac{1}{\lambda})$, there always exist at least $n$ prime closed geodesics without self-intersections, where $g_0$ is the standard Riemannian metric on $S^n$ with constant curvature 1 and $l(S^n, F)$ is the length of a shortest geodesic loop on $(S^n, F)$. We also study the stability of these closed geodesics.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove that for every Finsler n-sphere (S, F ) for n ≥ 3 with reversibility λ and flag curvature K satisfying ( λ λ+1 )2 < K ≤ 1, either there exist infinitely many prime closed geodesics or there exists one elliptic closed geodesic whose linearized Poincaré map has at least one eigenvalue which is an irrational multiple of π. Furthermore, there always exist three prime closed geodesics on any (S, F ) satisfying the above pinching condition.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove there are at least two closed geodesics on any compact bumpy Finsler $n$-manifold with $n\ge 2$. Thus generically there are at least two closed geodesics on compact Finsler manifolds. Furthermore, there are at least two closed geodesics on any compact Finsler $2$-manifold, and this lower bound is achieved by the Katok 2-sphere, cf. \cite{Kat}.

Abstract:In 1973, Katok constructed a non-degenerate (also called bumpy) Finsler metric on $S^3$ with exactly four prime closed geodesics. And then Anosov conjectured that four should be the optimal lower bound of the number of prime closed geodesics on every Finsler $S^3$. In this paper, we proved this conjecture for bumpy Finsler $S^{3}$ if the Morse index of any prime closed geodesic is nonzero.

Abstract:It's well known that the n-sphere S^n is the universal double covering of the n-dimensional real projective space ℝP^n and then any Finsler metric on ℝP^n induces a Finsler metric of S^n. In this paper, we prove that for every Finsler (S^n, F) for n≥3 whose metric is induced by irreversible Finsler (ℝP^n,F) with reversibility λ and flag curvature K satisfying (λ/λ+1)^2<K≤ 1, there exist at least n-1 prime closed geodesics on (S^n, F). Furthermore, if there exist finitely many distinct closed geodesics on (S^n, F), then there exist at least 2[n/2]-1 of them are non-hyperbolic.

Abstract:In this paper, we proved that for every Finsler metric on $S^n$ $(n\ge 4)$ with reversibility $\lambda$ and flag curvature $K$ satisfying $(\frac{2n-3}{n-1})^2 (\frac{\lambda}{\lambda+1})^2<K\le 1$ and $ \lambda<\frac{n-1}{n-2} $, there exist at least $n$ prime closed geodesics on $(S^n,F)$, which solved a conjecture of Katok and Anosov for such positivley curved spheres when $n$ is even. Furthermore, if the number of closed geodesics on such positively curved Finsler $S^n$ is finite, then there exist at least $2\left[\frac{n}{2}\right]-1$ non-hyperbolic closed geodesics.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove that on every Finsler n-sphere (S n , F) for n ≥ 6 with reversibility λ and flag curvature K satisfying ${(\frac{\lambda}{\lambda+1})^2 \, < \, K \, \le \, 1}$ , either there exist infinitely many prime closed geodesics or there exist ${[\frac{n}{2}]-2}$ closed geodesics possessing irrational average indices. Abstract:In this paper, we prove that on every Finsler manifold (M, F) with reversibility lambda and flag curvature K satisfying (lambda/lambda+1)(2) < K <= 1, there exist [dim M+1/2] closed geodesics. If the number of closed geodesics is finite, then there exist [dim M/2] non-hyperbolic closed geodesics. Moreover, there are three closed geodesics on (M, F) satisfying the above pinching condition when dim M = 3.

Abstract:By simplifying the first and the second variation formulas of the energy functional and generalizing the Weitzenbock formula, we study the stability and the rigidity of harmonic maps between Finsler manifolds. It is proved that any nondegenerate harmonic map from a compact Einstein Riemannian manifold with nonnegative scalar curvature to a Berwald manifold with nonpositive flag curvature is totally geodesic and there is no nondegenerate stable harmonic map from a Riemannian unit sphere S-n (n > 2) to any Finsler manifold.

Abstract:We prove the existence of at least two distinct closed geodesics on a compact simply connected manifold M with a bumpy and irreversible Finsler metric, when H* (M; Q) congruent to T-d,T-h+1(x) for some integer h >= 2 and even integer d >= 2. Consequently, together with earlier results on S-n, it implies the existence of at least two distinct closed geodesics on every compact simply connected manifold M with a bumpy irreversible Finsler metric.

Abstract:Let $M=S^n/ \Gamma$ and $h \in \pi_1(M)$ be a non-trivial element of finite order $p$, where the integers $n, p\geq2$ and $\Gamma$ is a finite abelian group which acts on the sphere freely and isometrically, therefore $M$ is diffeomorphic to a compact space form which is typical a non-simply connected manifold. We prove there exist at least two non-contractible closed geodesics on $\mathbb{R}P^2$ and obtain the upper bounds on their lengths. Moreover, we prove there exist at least $n$ prime non-contractible simple closed geodesics on $(M,F)$ of prescribed class $[h]$, provided \[ F^2 <(\frac{\lambda+1}{\lambda})^2 g_0 \;\; \text{ and } \;\; (\frac{\lambda}{\lambda+1})^2 < K \leq 1 \text{ for $n$ is odd or }\; 0<K \leq 1 \text{ for $n$ is even}, \] where $\lambda$ is the reversibility, $K$ is the flag curvature and $g_0$ is standard Riemannian metric. Stability of these non-contractible closed geodesics is also studied.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the growth of fundamental groups of Finsler manifolds. Some relationships between the growth of fundamental groups and the volume growth of universal covers of Finsler manifolds are found. Some estimates of entropies and the number of generators of fundamental groups of Finsler manifolds are given. Moreover, the quasi-isometry and the geometric norm in Finsler geometry are considered.

Some nonexistence results of nonconstant stable harmonic maps on compact Finsler manifolds are obtained, and the homotopy classes of maps on Finsler manifolds are discussed.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove that for every bumpy Finsler $n$-sphere $(S^n,\,F)$ with reversibility $\lambda$ and flag curvature $K$ satisfying $(\frac{\lambda}{\lambda+1})^2<K\le 1$, there exist $2[\frac{n+1}{2}]$ prime closed geodesics. This gives a confirmed answer to a conjecture of D. V. Anosov \cite{Ano} in 1974 for a generic case.
