Retracted: Optimization of Suzhou Creek Rehabilitation Project Stage I: Based on Water Quality Model

Abstract:Suzhou Creek is a seriously polluted tidal river in Shanghai, China. With the development of Shanghai, there is more and more concern over the "blackness and stink" phenomena of Suzhou Creek. Suzhou Creek Rehabilitation Project was launched in 1998, and the total investment of the Project Stage I was supposed to be USD 1 billion. In this study, the modified WASP model, which adopted the finite difference method, was chosen as the framework to develop the water quality model of Suzhou Creek with data from the Third Trial Low Flow Augmentation on Suzhou Creek in 1999, and other monitoring results. Measured in the lab first, several parameters including the longitudinal dispersion coefficient, CODCr decaying rate, nitrification rate, biochemical oxygen demand, decaying rate, sediment oxygen demand, and reaeration rate were calibrated by using a trial-and-error approach. The results of these coefficients were 13 m(2) center dot s(-1), 0-0.25 day(-1), 0.03 day(-1), 0.1 day(-1), 3-10 g center dot m(-2) center dot day(-1), 0.2 day(-1), respectively. Based on the model, Suzhou Creek Rehabilitation Project Stage I was optimized. As a result, the amount of intercepted wastewater was increased, the pump station and gatelocks in the estuary and some other constructions were suspended, and the actual investment of the Project Stage I was reduced to USD 0.845 billion. Initial environmental target of eliminating "blackness and stink" of the main channel was achieved by the end of 2000. The ecosystem of Suzhou Creek has been improved gradually since implementation of the Project Stage I.
