Abstract:Objectives To study the effects of exogenous estrogen on the levels of superoxide dismutase(SOD) and nitric oxide(NO) in brain tissue of neonatal rats with hypoxic-ischemic damage. To explore the treatment mechanism of estrogen on neonatal rats with cerebrocellular damage of hypoxic-ischemic.Methods Seventy-five(75) 7-day old newborn Wistar rats were randomly and equally divided into normal control group,hypoxic-ischemic brain damage(HIBD) group and three intervention groups which include normal saline(NS) group, salivae group, estrogen group. For the intervention groups, the HIBD rats were injected with NS,salivae(0.15 ml / 10 g) intraperitoneally and with es-trogen(2 mg / kg) subcutaneously. Then the rats were killed 72 hours after being hypoxia and ischemia.Their cerebral cortex were taken and made into homogenate to detect SOD and NO levels. Results SOD levels in brain of HIBD group and NS group were lower and their NO level were higher than that of the normal control group(both P < 0.01);Both salivae, estrogen groups showed higher levels of SOD and lower levels of NO than that of HIBD group with significant dif-ference(all P < 0.05) .Conclusions Estrogen and salivae can pass through the blood-cerebral barrier and increase SOD level, decrease NO level in cerebral cortex of HIBD rats, thus make the preventive and treatment effects on HIBD.
