Abstract:A case of snow storm at Great Wall Station ( GWS) was studied using data of NCEP analysis,in-situ observations and surface weather charts. The storm took place on August 29th, 2006,bringing very high winds and poor horizontal visibility there. It's found that this storm occured under a situation of‘High in the south and low in the north’. Low level easterly jet from the Antarctic continent caused significant decrease in air temperature and humidity, making the storm with an obvious feature of low temperature and humidity. Warm air advection at high level brought enough vapor from lower latitudes. Deep cyclonic vorticity at middle and low level, configuration of divergence at high level and convergence at low level, together with strong vertical uplifts were the dynamic reasons of the strong snow fall and even the snow storm. There was an inversion layer in the low-level atmosphere during the later phase of the storm; this kind of vertical structure of‘cold at low level and warm at high level’may be very important to the lasting of the snow storm.
