Abstract:The determination of the acidity of ionic liquids is of crucial significance to the utilization of ionic liquids. By using pyridine and acetonitrile as IR spectroscopic probes, the acidity of common room temperature ionic liquids was determined. For the probe pyridine, the IR band near 1450, 1540 cm(-1) of pyridine is indicative the Lewis/Bronsted acidity of ionic liquids respectively. For another probe acetonitrile, the increase of the C = N stretching wave number near 2253 cm(-1) with a new band appear at the higher wave number is indicative of the Lewis acidity. The influence of the structure of ionic liquids on the Lewis/Bronsted acidity by the IR spectroscopy was investigeted. The Lewis acid strength of different ionic liquids has been compared through the shift of the 1450 cm(-1) of pyridine. A more obvious comparison of the Lewis acid intensity of different ionic liquids has been made by acetonitrile probe.

Abstract:Knowledge of the acidity of ionic liquid (ILs) is critically required for utilization of ionic liquid, The acidity of chloroaluminate ionic liquids was investigated by pyridine (Py) as infrared spectroscopic probe. It was found that when the anion molar composition x of ionic liquid varies within. 0.4 - 0.5, ionic liquids exhibits weak Lewis acidity. Infrared (IR) absorption frequencies of ring stretching vibrations for pyridine on Lewis acid Al2Cl7- AlCl4-, Al2Cl6 and AlCl3 were assigned, respectively. The frequency and peak area of IR absorption spectra could be indicative of the acidity strength of ionic liquids. In addition, the evolvement mechanism of the Lewis acid site of ionic liquid was studied on the basis of the method of adsorption incremental of pyridine. The results showed that the highly Lewis acidic adsorption state-Py-Al2Cl7- complex was converted into Py-AlCl4- complex and Py-AlCl3 complex with increasing pyridine contents.

Abstract:As a class of alternative green solvents and catalysts, ionic liquids play an important role in catalytic and organic reactions.Over the last years, acidic ionic liquids have evoked particular attention because of their ability to provide dense reactive sites like liquid acids and non-volatility like solid acids.Therefore, acidic ionic liquids are ideal for replacing traditional liquid/solid acids.The acidity of ionic liquids has strong influence on the activity of the involved chemical reactions and the selectivity of reaction sites.In Diels-Alder reaction, for example, chemical reaction rates and selectivity in acidic ionic liquids proved to be far superior to that observed in traditional polar and nonpolar media.Determination of acidity of ionic liquids, therefore, is very important for understanding the mechanisms of the respective catalytic reactions and searching for high efficient catalysts.In this mini review, we summarized the recent progress in establishing molecular probe-based spectroscopic methods to determine the acidity of ionic liquids.First, phenylamine and its derivatives have been used as UV-visible spectroscopic probes, through which the Hammett acidity functions(H0) can be evaluated.Second, mesityl oxide has been proposed as anuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopic probe.The Hammett acidity can be derived with the help of a calibration curve of 13C NMR spectrum.These two methods determine the Bronsted acidity of ionic liquids.Third, acetonitrile and pyridine have been employed as infrared spectroscopicprobes, through which the relative strength of Lewis acidity of various ionic liquids can be compared qualitatively.In comparing the three methods, each has its merits and disadvantages.The first two are quantitative methods, whilst the third one is only a qualitative means.The low solubility of the UV-vis probes in ionic liquids may greatly affect their application.Overlapping of peaks may be a big problem of the UV-vis and IR-based methods.Readers are suggested to select the simplest, fastest, and most accurate method to meet their needs.

Abstract:A novel method was established to determine the acidity of ionic liquids by using pyridine as IR spectroscopic probe. This method can be used to identify the Brnsted/Lewis acidity of ionic liquids, and meanwhile roughly delineate the strength of the Lewis acidity. Cl/AlCl 3 was used as a catalyst in the alkylation of isobutane with butene. The effects of operating variables were investigated and optimized. Under the optimized operation conditions, the catalytic performance of the ionic liquid is comparable with that of H 2SO 4. In addition, the ionic liquid can be easily separated from the products and reused directly without any treatment for about 10 times.
Ionicity of Protic Ionic Liquid: Quantitative Measurement by Spectroscopic Methods

Abstract:The ionicity value, which is a key property of protic ionic liquids, was obtained by attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance, respectively, for a protic ionic liquid: n-propylammonium acetate. The method of potentiometric titration is found to not be suitable for such a kind of ionic liquid, as the Delta pK(a) of the compositing acid and base is relatively small. In the IR spectrum, molecular species can be directly observed in the range 1200-1800 cm(-1), and the ratio of ionic and molecular species can be quantitatively calculated by the area of characteristic absorption peaks calibrated by a standard curve from NaAc/HAc solutions. The results show that 93% components in n-propylammonium acetate are ionic species. The NMR method was also introduced to test and verify the result. Despite that only one mixed peak can be observed for molecular and ionic species, the. observed H-1 chemical shift can be assumed to be the weighted average of them. In this way, the ionicity can be calculated and it fits well with the IR approach. It indicates that, for a protic ionic liquid with a relatively small Delta pK(a) value, spectroscopic methods such as IR and NMR could be applied to determine the ionicity.

Abstract:The acidity of chloroaluminate ionic liquids and the interaction mechanism of Lewis acid site Al2Cl7(-) of chloroaluminate ionic liquid and pyridine were experimentally investigated by IR characterization by using pyridine as molecular probe and increasing pyridine adsorption, and theoretically confirmed by quantum chemical calculations at density functional theory (DFT) and ab initio levels. Abstract:The use of molecular solvents has been proposed as a simple solution to reduce the high viscosities of neat ionic liquids (ILs) and extend the practical applications of ILs. A proper understanding of the structure and intermolecular interaction is of vital importance for the design, optimization and synthesis of ILs systems with tailored properties for specific applications. In this work, the structure and hydrogen-bond features of the representative pyrrolidinium/piperidinium based ILs and acetonitrile mixtures were studied by a combination of Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The v(CN) region is sensitive to the microenvironment and is used as IR probe to detect the structure and hydrogen-bond properties of the two IL–acetonitrile binary systems in the whole concentration range. Positive peaks are observed in the excess IR spectra of v(CN) region which indicates the non-ideality of the mixing process and the formation of hydrogen-bonded complexes in the mixtures. With the help of deconvolution and DFT calculations, the species transformation in the mixing process can be identified from the excess spectra: When x(CD3CN) is less than 0.90, acetonitrile mainly interacts with the ion pairs and ion clusters of the ILs. Ion clusters are all broken out into ion pairs and the interaction complex is mainly ion pair–CD3CN when x(CD3CN) > 0.90. In the whole concentration range, the CD3CN cannot break apart the strong coulombic interactions between the cation and anion, and the individual cation and anion do not exist in the mixtures. All of the hydrogen-bonds in the ion pair/ion cluster–acetonitrile complexes are weak strength, closed shells and electrostatically dominant interactions.

Comparison of Polarities of Room-Temperature Ionic Liquids Using Ft-Ir Spectroscopic Probes

Abstract:The solvent properties, especially the polarity, of room-temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) of the general type [Cnmim]X, where [Cnmim] is the 1-CnH2n+1-3-methylimidazolium cation and X is [BF4]−, [PF6]−, [NO3]−, [SCN]−, or [NTf2]− (Tf = CF3SO2), have been investigated using Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Comparing the experimental shifts in the νC=O stretching frequencies of acetone and N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) as probe molecules suggests that the polarities of most common RTILs are between that of DMF and methanol. A more sensitive probe, Fe(CO)5, can distinguish small polarity differences between RTILs with similar structures. The effects of varying the structure of RTILs by introducing functional groups and different anions on their polarity are also compared.
Protic Pyridinium Ionic Liquids: Synthesis, Acidity Determination and Their Performances for Acid Catalysis

Abstract:Three new protic ionic liquids based on 2-methylpyridinium were prepared and characterized. Their catalytic activities for the tert-butylation of phenol and the esterification of cyclic olefins with acetic acid were examined and satisfactory results were obtained over 2-methylpyridinium trifluoromethanesulfonate ([2-MPyH]OTf). Hammett method was used to determine the acidity order of these ionic liquids and the results are consistent with the catalytic activities observed in the acid-catalyzed probe reactions.

Abstract:Task-specific ionic liquids (ILs) are those with functional groups introduced in the cations or anions of ILs to bring about specific properties for various tasks. In this work, the hydrogen bonding interactions between a hydroxyl functionalized IL 1-(2-hydroxylethyl)-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([C2OHMIM][BF4]) and acetonitrile were investigated in detail by infrared spectroscopy, excess spectroscopy, two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy, combined with hydrogen nuclear magnetic resonance and density functional theory calculations (DFT). The hydroxyl group rather than C2H is found to be the main interaction site in the cation. And the ν(OH) is more sensitive than v(C−Hs) to the environment, which has been taken as an intrinsic probe to reflect the structural change of IL. Examining the region of ν(OH), by combining excess spectroscopy and DFT calculation, a number of species were identified in the mixtures. Other than the hydrogen bond between a cation and an anion, the hydroxyl group allows the formation of a hydrogen bond between two like-charged cations. The OH⋯O hydrogen bonding interactions in the hydroxyl-mediated cation-cation complexes are cooperative, while OH⋯F and C2H⋯F hydrogen bonding interactions in cation-anion complexes are anti-cooperative. These in-depth studies on the properties of the ionic liquid-acetonitrile mixtures may shed light on exploring their applications as mixed solvents and understanding the nature of doubly ionic hydrogen bonds.

Abstract:Acetonitrile has been used as a probe molecule to determine the acidity of ionic liquids. Based on the information from IR spectra in the CN stretching region of 2200 similar to 2400 cm(-1), Lewis and Bronsted acidity of ionic liquids can be distinguished from each other, and Lewis acid strength of ionic liquids can be estimated. This method is easy to handle and widely applicable to both liquid and solid acids. The Lewis acid strength of ionic liquids can be adjusted with AlCl3. The synthesis of monoalkyldiphenyl oxide via the alkylation of diphenyl oxide with dodecene catalyzed by 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloroaluminate (III) ([bmim]Cl/AlCl3) was studied. The catalytic activity of [bmim]Cl/AlCl3 is much higher than that of the AlCl3 catalyst. A low amount of [bmim]Cl/AlCl3 dramatically improves the monoalkyldiphenyl oxide yield. A high yield of monoalkyldiphenyl oxide of about 90% can be obtained at a reaction temperature of 80 degreesC and a diphenyl oxide to dodecene molar ratio of 7. The process catalyzed by the ionic liquids simplifies the product isolation evidently and can be regarded as an environmentally benign system.

Abstract:The phase behavior and the ionic conductivity of ionic liquids (ILs) of the N-alkyl-N-alkylpyrrolidinium (PYR(xy)) cation and the bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (TFSI) anion are investigated upon addition of LiTFSI salt. We compare the case of two new ILs of the PYR(2y) cation (where 2 is ethyl and y is butyl or propyl) with that of the PYR(14) (where 1 is methyl and 4 is butyl). We find that the addition of LiTFSI increases the glass transition temperature, decreases the melting temperature and the heat of fusion and, in the ILs of the PYR(2y) family, suppresses crystallization. In the solid state, significant ionic conductivities are found, being as high as 10(-5) S cm(-1), strongly increasing with Li(+) concentration. The opposite trend is found in the liquid state, where the conductivity is on the order of 10(-3)-10(-2) S cm(-1) at room temperature. A T(g)-scaled Arrhenius plot shows that the liquid-state ionic conductivity in these systems is mainly governed by viscosity and that the fragility of the liquids is slightly influenced by the structural modifications on the cation.

The Polarity of Ionic Liquids: Relationship between Relative Permittivity and Spectroscopic Parameters of Probe

Abstract:Polarity is one of the most important properties of ionic liquids (ILs) and an essential requirement when choosing an IL for a specific industrial application. Up to now, several empirical solvent polarity scales, such as Hildebrand solubility parameter, relative permittivity, the electronic transition energy of the longest-wavelength Vis absorption band of betaine dye no. 30 (E-T(30) value) and the hyperfine coupling constant (A(N)) etc. have been applied to ILs to provide quantitative evaluation of the polarity of ILs. Among them, the E-T(30) value is widely used to reflect the polarity of ILs, however, it cannot be determined for opaque solvents or for solvents in which betaine dye no. 30 is insoluble. To broaden its scope of application and uniform the polarity standard, many approaches were used to predict the values of E-T(30). Herein, we managed to apply a modified semiempirical reaction field of molecular solvents to predict the E-T(30) and A(N) values of spin probe in ILs. Based on the experimental and estimated E-T(30) values of 791 data entries, 240 ILs, 108 cations, and 34 anions of ILs, an "overall" polarity sequence of ILs can be obtained: primary, secondary, and tertiary alkylammonium salts > heterocyclic salts > quaternary alkylammonium salts approximate to phosphonium salts approximate to guanidinium salts.
Experimental determination of solvation free energy of protons in non-protic ionic liquids using Raman spectroscopy

Abstract:Room temperature imidazolium-based ionic liquids (ILs) often present super-acidity, which can be characterized by the free energy of solvation of protons in ILs, Δ solv G 0 (H + ) IL . It can be derived from the consensus value of the free energy of solvation of protons in water if the free energy of transfer of protons from water to the ILs, Δ t G 0 (H + ), is determined. However, the experimental determination of the free energy of transfer of protons relies on extra-thermodynamic hypotheses, as protons cannot be transferred from one solvent to another without a counterion. Here we propose to measure the Hammett acidity functions, which relies on the protonation equilibrium of specific pH-reporters, for the first time by Raman spectroscopy directly in acidic solution of 2,6-dichloro-4-nitroaniline in three 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ILs. We demonstrated that the Δ t G 0 (H + ) obtained by Raman spectroscopy and UV-visible spectroscopy were identical in the same 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide. Also, when the butyl substituent is replaced by a longer alkyl chain such as an octyl chains, the acidity in the IL is lowered. The free energies of solvation are calculated in four ILs from Raman spectroscopy data recorded directly in the acidic solutions. These values confirmed that the protons are less solvated in ILs than in water, hence their acidity. Raman spectroscopy also enables to determine the solvation number of the proton in imidazolium-based bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ILs. The benefits of implementing Raman spectroscopy to determine the Hammett acidity function in ILs using non-colored pH-reporter and in colored media is also discussed.

Abstract:The relationship between the structures and properties of the ionic liquids (ILs) is the foundation for designing novel ionic liquids and developing ILs-based applications, which is very important. Spectroscopic methods have been developed as an important tool to study the structures and interactions of the solutions. Recently, spectroscopic methods have played a key role in the study of the structures and the interactions of the ILs or the solutions containing them. Herein, the applications and progress of different spectroscopic methods including IR, Raman, NMR, and ESR methods in the study on the structures and properties of pure ionic liquids and ionic liquids/solvent mixtures are reviewed, indicating the importance of the spectroscopic methods.
Standard pK(a) scales of carbon-centered indicator acids in ionic liquids: effect of media and structural implication.

Abstract:Energetics of bond dissociation, especially the R-H bond heterolysis free energy (pK(a)), has played a central role in promoting chemistry to become a rational science. Despite the oceans of acidity studies in the literature, the current knowledge is limited to that in the classical molecular solvents and is unable to be extended to anticipate the acidity changes in ionic media. As the latter is now very popular for I replacing volatile organic solvents, it becomes highly desirable to know how the driving force of bond cleavage is varied as the medium composition is switched from neutral molecules to the charged ions. Here we describe a general approach to measure absolute pK(a)'s in pure ionic liquid (IL). The standard conditions warranting accurate measurement were outlined. The pK(a)'s of the selected 18 C-H type indicator acids in four ILs were determined and a convenient indicator platform was constructed for easy expansion of acidity scales. These absolute pK(a)'s make possible, for the first time, direct comparisons of bond energies in IL with those in molecular solvent and in the gas phase and should be able to serve as the standard parameters for calibrating computational methods suitable for the studies in ionic media. The effect of cation and anion in IL in relation to structure was analyzed.

Abstract:Structures of pyridinium-based ionic liquids containing 1-methylpyridinium [MP] + , 1-ethylpyridinium [EP] + and 1-propylpyridinium [PP] + with halide anions (X) where X = Cl − , Br − and I − were studied using density functional theory and the most stable structures of these ionic liquids were compared. Then electronic and structural properties were extracted for the desired liquids. The results show that in the most stable conformers, in these ILs, Cl − and Br − anions prefer to be placed almost in the plane of the pyridinium ring, while I − prefers the position almost vertical to the plane of the pyridinium ring. In order to investigate the hydrogen bonds between molecules by atoms in molecules (AIMs) and natural bonding orbital (NBO) were studied. The calculated thermodynamic functions show that the interaction of the cation–anion pair in ionic liquids containing Cl − and Br − anions is greater than I − , and these interactions decrease with the increase in the atomic weight of the halide. Molecular orbital theory has also been used to calculate quantities related to their stability and activity. Also, ionic liquids containing iodine anion have a high dipole moment compared to ionic liquids containing chloride and bromide. The results of this study show that the properties of Any ILs can be controlled by choosing the appropriate anions.

Probing molecular interaction in ionic liquids by low frequency spectroscopy: Coulomb energy, hydrogen bonding and dispersion forces

Abstract:Ionic liquids are defined as salts composed solely of ions with melting points below 100 °C. These remarkable liquids have unique and fascinating properties and offer new opportunities for science and technology. New combinations of ions provide changing physical properties and thus novel potential applications for this class of liquid materials. To a large extent, the structure and properties of ionic liquids are determined by the intermolecular interaction between anions and cations. In this perspective we show that far infrared and terahertz spectroscopy are suitable methods for studying the cation-anion interaction in these Coulomb fluids. The interpretation of the measured low frequency spectra is supported by density functional theory calculations and molecular dynamics simulations. We present results for selected aprotic and protic ionic liquids and their mixtures with molecular solvents. In particular, we focus on the strength and type of intermolecular interaction and how both parameters are influenced by the character of the ions and their combinations. We show that the total interaction between cations and anions is a result of a subtle balance between Coulomb forces, hydrogen bonds and dispersion forces. For protic ionic liquids we could measure distinct vibrational modes in the low frequency spectra indicating clearly the cation-anion interaction characterized by linear and medium to strong hydrogen bonds. Using isotopic substitution we have been able to dissect frequency shifts related to pure interaction strength between cations and anions and to different reduced masses only. In this context we also show how these different types of interaction may influence the physical properties of ionic liquids such as the melting point, viscosity or enthalpy of vaporization. Furthermore we demonstrate that low frequency spectroscopy can also be used for studying ion speciation. Low vibrational features can be assigned to contact ion pairs and solvent separated ion pairs. In conclusion we showed how detailed knowledge of the low frequency spectra can be used to understand the change in interaction strength and structure by variation of temperature, solvent polarity and solvent concentration in ionic liquids and their mixtures with molecular solvents. In principle the used combination of methods is suitable for studying intermolecular interaction in pure molecular liquids and their solutions including additive materials such as nanoparticles.

Abstract:Acidic deep eutectic solvents (ADESs) have been utilized in various applications. Clearly, it is crucial to obtain acidity information that could reveal the relationship with performance. However, appropriate methods for measuring acidity are limited. Herein, we developed two promising approaches (without additional solvents) to identify and characterize both Lewis and Brønsted acidities by applying acetonitrile as an infrared probe and trimethylphosphine oxide (TMPO) as a nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) probe. The acetonitrile IR approach is suitable for measuring the acidity of Lewis ADESs by monitoring the peak of ν(CN) around 2300 cm-1, and the 31P-TMPO NMR approach could identify and scale both Lewis and Brønsted acidities precisely. Moreover, a perfect linear relationship between the IR shift of ν(CN) and the effective charge density of metal cations was established, which provides a better understanding of Lewis acidity. In short, this study not only offers two efficient acidity measurement methods but also provides a molecular basis for optimizing the performance of ADESs in applications.
