Abstract:Electing the words of the year has a long tradition in Germany. In contrast to that, it has been established just recently in China. This paper analyzes the criteria and selection process of these words. Furthermore, it investigates closely the change these words have experienced during the past years as well as the sociocultural aspects of the society derived from them. This linguistic and sociocultural analysis of Chinese trend words lead to the conclusion that the words of the year can be seen as a mirror reflecting the change of a language and its society.

Abstract:Previous studies have indicated that divergence exists in translation, which influences the quality of translation; such divergence follows some regularity which can be modeled by a probability distribution. The present article chose one verb dao from a Chinese literary classic Hongloumeng, and its English translation said to determine whether the frequencies of the two verbs develop according to a diversification process. Furthermore, we tend to find differences between the two English versions of Hawkes and Yang Xianyi regarding dao's translation, and we also investigated the role of the three causes of divergence in the diversification process. The result indicates that both dao's translations and the original text of said is in good agreement with the modified right-truncated Zipf-Alekseev distribution. Three major reasons were found for causing differences between the two translations: the nature of language, translators' subjectivity, and context. These are also the three major reasons for the diversification and differences of the two translated versions.
Miao(苗)-Yao(瑶)and Sino-Tibetan in the Perspective of Some Possible Cognates

Abstract:The genetic structure of East Asians shows that both the Sino-Tibetan and the Miao(苗)-Yao(瑶) populations have a remarkably high frequency of the O3-M122, while O1-M119 is found with high frequency among the Daic and the Austronesian populations, indicating that Sino-Tibetan populations and Miao(苗) -Yao(瑶) populations have a closer genetic relationship. The paper examines some basic words such as Moon(月亮), Soil(土) and Field(田地) in the Miao(苗)-Yao(瑶) languages and compares them with those in old Chinese and Tibeto-Burman, the result of which corroborates the genetic evidence.

Abstract:This article researches evolution "collective name" of Taiwan's aborigines and existing problems from the Perspective of cultural differences.Historically,Taiwan's aborigines were "collectively" named as "Yi"(夷),"Fan [Fan]"(番[蕃])and "Gaoshas(shans)"(高砂[山]族).These names were general "symbol" which was imposed to Taiwan's aborigines who had complex content and cultural diversity by the outside world,especially on the Background of Chinese culture lacking a deep understanding on Taiwan's aboriginal communities.So they didn't reflect the own identity and cultural memory of aborigines of various ethnic groups,and they are not "ethnic title" in the strict sense.After Kangxi and Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty,it appeared "wild"(野)Fan and "assimilated"(化)Fan and "raw"(生)Fan and "cooked"(熟)Fan.In Japanese occupation era,it appeared "Gaoshas(shans)" and "Pingpu" aboriginal title.The above-mentioned two types of title only distinguished the extent of aborigines becoming Chinese,and didn't reflect the cultural differences between different ethnic groups,so we still can not get away from the errors of vague awareness and general summary.

Abstract:Through a ten-year investigation, we have found that core words are more stable than grammar and speech sounds. Through a comparison of the proportion of relatives among the core words in the cognate languages, we have determined how closely or distantly they are related to one another. With the help of mathematics, we have also offered a basic pedigree tree of the Austro-Yue language phylum, which is somewhat different from the existing ones.

Abstract:Abstract The extinction of Tai Ahom, a language from the Tai-Kadai family that was once spoken in Assam, India, can be contributed to a number of socio-historical, linguistic and cultural factors including the development and strong influence of Assamese, a language from the Indo-Aryan family spoken in that region. In an effort to examine the dynamics that contributed to the loss of Tai Ahom, the current article focuses on a descriptive overview of issues including language shift, variation, and extinction in the case of Tai Ahom. It will also highlight the factors which contributed to its shift and gradual extinction and discuss current efforts to revive the language.
A Preliminary Study of the Basic Pedigree Structure of the Sino-Tibetan Language Family

Abstract:According to the hierarchic distribution of speech sounds with their corresponding morphemes, the Sino-Tibetan family includes the Han language stock, the Tibeto-Burman language stock and the Miao language stock. The Hmong-Mien first separated itself from the Sino-Tibetan family and then the Han language separated itself from the Tibeto-Burman language stock. The hierarchic distribution of speech sounds with their corresponding words cannot prove that the Han language shares the same origin with the Austronesian language, the Kam-Tai language and the South-Asian language while the hypothesis of a super-language family comprising the Sino-Tibetan language and the Austro-Viet language has not been proved.
On Initial Correspondences of Sino-Tibetan Related Words

Abstract:The initial correspondences of Sino-Tibetan related words identified by Gong Hwang-chcrng are reanalyzed in this paper. The Old Chinese correspondences to Written Tibetan consonant clusters, Cv-C-, are taken as examples to show one-to-many matches in initial correspondences of Sino-Tibetan related words. The interpretation on those matches highlights the problem about what part of Written Tibetan consonant cluster is appropriate to be compared with the single initial in Old Chinese. Internal changes, chronological layers induced by language contact and morphological process are tried to solve this problem. However, many correspondences remain inexplicable. The results then show the serious handicap in justifying the genuine Sino-Tibetan cognates.

Abstract:The authors of the article consider the conceptual dyad “Life-Death” from the position of a representative of the Chinese linguistic culture, seeking to enter a new cultural space for themselves - the so-called “Russian world”. The hypothesis of the study is that the carrier of a foreign cultural linguistic consciousness has an already formed cognitive base, which becomes a contrasting background for the perception of a new linguistic reality. Within the framework of the article, the authors analyzed the cultural context, which makes it possible to explicate the semantics of these concepts in the Chinese language picture of the world, and also conducted an experiment with a reference group, which made it possible to objectify their actual meanings. The essence of the experiment was the work of a receptive group with precedent texts that contain in their semantic field the conceptual core “Life” / “Death” or “Life-Death”. Precedent texts are obligatory formants of the cognitive base of an ethnos. We sought to obtain the most recurrent responses to these stimuli in order to differentiate the conceptual features of the dyad. The result of the experiment was a selection of precedent texts, commented on by the receptive group. Summarizing the empirical data, we came to the conclusion that for the bearer of the Chinese linguistic consciousness, the concepts “Life” and “Death” represent an ontological unity with the corresponding set of characteristics: Tao, the great middle path, destiny, happiness. In addition, linguo-ethnic standards were identified: “noble husband” and “perfect sage”.

Abstract:The Sino-Tibetan language family is one of the world's largest and most prominent families, spoken by nearly 1.4 billion people. Despite the importance of the Sino-Tibetan languages, their prehistory remains controversial, with ongoing debate about when and where they originated. To shed light on this debate we develop a database of comparative linguistic data, and apply the linguistic comparative method to identify sound correspondences and establish cognates. We then use phylogenetic methods to infer the relationships among these languages and estimate the age of their origin and homeland. Our findings point to Sino-Tibetan originating with north Chinese millet farmers around 7200 B.P. and suggest a link to the late Cishan and the early Yangshao cultures.

Abstract:This study investigates the diversification phenomenon of synonymy in Wenzhounese, a variety of Chinese spoken around the city of Wenzhou in southern China. Five groups of synonymous variants were extracted from Wenzhou Spoken Corpus (WSC) for finding the regularity of their rank-frequency distribution. The result revealed that the rank-frequency distribution of the investigated synonymous variants abides by the right-truncated modified Zipf-Alekseev distribution, a unified function modelling the diversifying process.

Abstract:This paper applies the rank analysis to the core Sino-Tibetan correspondences and the core Sino-Yi correspondences.It is found that the high-ranking words are more than the low-ranking words in both correspondences.This confirms the genetic relationship between Chinese and Tibetan and that between Chinese and Yi.In other words,the genetic relatedness between Chinese and Tibeto-Burman languages can be confirmed.

Abstract:This paper provides more evidence for the genetic relationship between Austronesian and Karn-Tai. After an examination of the previous studies, it is preferred to compare modem languages directly at current stage, though some reconstructed Proto-languages are also used with caution. Dehong Dai, as a representative of Kam-Tai, and Indonesian, as a representative of Austronesian, have been compared, and systematic sound correspondences between them are established. According to Rank analysis, there are more Dai-Indonesian related words in High rank than those in Low rank, which indicates genetic relationship. Updated evidence and rank analysis show that both Kam-Tai languages and Austronesian languages are genetically related, respectively. Therefore, according to transitivity of genetic relatedness, Kam-Tai and Austronesian should be genetically related. Moreover, sound correspondences between Proto-Tai and Indonesian have been worked out. And Rank analysis confirms the genetic relationship. Finally, via the similar procedure, it is found that the genetic relationship between Austronesian with either Chinese or Tibeto-Burman are not confirmed because the related words between them in High rank are less than those in Low rank.

Abstract:This study focused on the disaster poetry after The 3.11 Great East Japan Earthquake and Great Sichuan Earthquake, investigating common features and differences in the poetic diction used in Chinese and Japanese disaster poetry through a quantitative analysis of the diction, also identified the commonly used dictions to create images, exploring the literary meaning that is implied in the poetic diction. In this paper, we adopted a Word Cloud method to analyze the poetic diction in the two anthologies. Through a comparative examination of the distribution of poetic dictions in the disaster poetry of China and Japan, it was found that the vocabularies used to describe disaster appearing with high frequency. Additionally, the most commonly appearing diction in Chinese poet is "life" for the poetry describing families damaged by an earthquake or tsunami as well as their mothers and children whereas "people" had the highest appearance frequency in Japanese poetry. Although the most frequently appearing dictions are different from each other, they have the similarity that "Life" is a metonymic form of "people," and the driving force to move 'people' is nothing but "life." The common characteristics found in the analysis of poetic diction in the disaster poetry of both countries were as follows: the descriptions of damage caused by disaster using direct expressions, the expressions of condolence for victims; the pursuit of hope even in despair; and the will to overcome the current hardship. These common features became more obvious when the poetic diction with the highest frequency in the Chinese and Japanese disaster poetry was examined. The anthologies from both countries contained the universal sentiments that everyone can sympathize in the face of disastrous reality.

Abstract:This article is devoted to the analysis of the conceptual pair “Life” and “Death” in the Chinese linguistic picture of the world. The relevance of this study is due to the growing need for successful intercultural cooperation between Chinese and Russian cultures. Due to objective extralinguistic factors, there is an intensive exchange of knowledge between China and Russia. The flow of Chinese students to Russia is increasing; In the learning process, they are interested not so much in mastering the functioning of the Russian language system, but in understanding the “Russian world.” This process can be difficult due to the discrepancy between the original and the target cultures. The purpose of this work is to study the conceptual complex “Life – Death”, implemented in the Chinese linguistic picture of the world, on the basis of precedent texts widely known to recipients. The subject of the study is the differential characteristics of the conceptual dyad, identified in the process of analysis. The material for the work is precedent texts, in particular, poetic and paremiological units containing the lexical component “Life” and “Death” in the Chinese language. Research methods: descriptive method, conceptual analysis, linguocultural commentary method, contextual analysis, questionnaire. The analysis showed that in the system of social relations the role of each person is determined from birth. Death in the Chinese linguistic picture of the world is the other side of life; It becomes grief and loss only if the individual fails to realize his best qualities. In a certain sense, life for speakers of Chinese language consciousness is a moral achievement. The parameters of the Chinese linguistic picture of the world that we have considered constitute the fund of knowledge that will allow us to begin to comprehend the Russian linguistic picture of the world either by “comparing” mental spaces or by eliminating gaps.
Dynamics of Language in Social Emergency: Investigating COVID-19 Hot Words on Weibo.

Abstract:Drawing on word embeddings techniques and tracking the frequency and semantic change of hot words on Sina Weibo during the COVID-19 pandemic, this study investigates how language and discourse change during crisis. More specifically, correlation tests were conducted between word frequency ranks, pandemic data, and word meaning change ratio. Results indicated that the frequency of some hot words changed with both pandemic data and the frequency of other hot words, which were significantly correlated with the American pandemic data rather than that of China. Moreover, February of 2020 saw the most distinctive semantic changes marked by a large part of the nearest neighbors for WAR metaphors. The correlations between changes in the frequency and nearest neighbors of COVID-19 related hot words exhibited some acceptable peculiarities. This study proves the availability of studying discourse through language change by observing minor semantic change on connotation level from social media, which adds a new perspective to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract:This study quantitatively investigated word frequencies in parallel Chinese texts at three different periods, namely, Classical Chinese (1855), Beijing Mandarin (1908) and Modern Mandarin (2010), attempting to shed some light on the evolution of the Chinese language over the last 150 years. With the evolution of Chinese: both the types and tokens increased diachronically, and sharp changes can be found in the high-frequency function words, vocabulary richness, and the distribution of word classes. The syntactic structure has also become increasingly complex. In addition, although the length of words (measured in character) has increased diachronically, disyllabic words have not always been preponderant in Chinese after the opium war of 1840–1842. The results show that the complication is a crucial trend in the evolution process of Chinese.

Abstract:The article is devoted to the theoretical aspects of the problem of expressing linguocultural features, value orientations and aspects of the development of the linguocultural potential of euphemisms of the thematic group «death» in Russian and Chinese proverbs. The purpose of the study was to identify the specifics of the use of euphemisms of the thematic group «death» in Russian and Chinese proverbs in the context of the linguocultural conditionality of euphemisms. The object of the study is the euphemisms of the thematic group «death» in Russian and Chinese proverbs. The subject of the research is linguocultural features and linguocultural potential of euphemisms of the thematic group «death» in Russian and Chinese proverbs. The study used methods of analysis of scientific research literature, linguoculturological analysis of language units, structural and comparative analysis; descriptive methods, including sampling and analysis of linguistic material, etc. The main conclusions of the study are: euphemisms of the thematic group under study do not have the same expression in Russian and Chinese, since these ethnic groups are characterized by a non-identical worldview (in the field of axiology, philosophy, religion); aspects of the development of the linguocultural potential of euphemisms are due to the specifics of the ethnocultural attitude to this phenomenon. The author's special contribution to the study of the topic is to identify the specifics of the value orientations of the euphemisms of the thematic group «death», which are defined through oppositions that objectify ideas about this phenomenon. The scientific novelty of the study lies in the fact that for the first time an analysis of the euphemisms of the thematic group «death» was carried out in the framework of identifying their linguocultural conditionality, value orientations, as well as the linguocultural potential in Russian and Chinese proverbs.
