Abstract:This paper attempted to explore why technological advancement and industrial upgrading in Britain and the US was relatively sustainable,which underpins their economic hegemony in the world,while the Japanese story was different? It suggested that Britain's technological advancement relied on its international market extent,while that of the US on a domestic one.However,both of them featured in a state-directed market extent,which made their technological advancement and industrial upgrading sustainable.Japan did not dominate the international market which was dominated by the US,making Japan unable to sustain its technological and industrial development.State-directed market extent is essential to seek for technological great power.China should pay more attention to the state-directed dominance of the market extent for its technological advancement and industrial upgrading.
