Abstract:We describe the direct synthesis of organophosphorus compounds from ubiquitous aryl and vinyl carboxylic acids via decarbonylative palladium catalysis. The catalytic system shows excellent scope and tolerates a wide range of functional groups (>50 examples). The utility of this powerful methodology is highlighted in the late-stage derivatization directly exploiting the presence of the prevalent carboxylic acid functional group. DFT studies provided insight into the origin of high bond activation selectivity and P(O)-H isomerization pathway.

Abstract:A cascade reaction enabling enantio- and diastereoselective construction of strained cyclopropanes is described. This asymmetric (2+1) annulation process uses vinyl methylene carbonate and 2-cyanoacrylate as reaction partners in the presence of Pd(PPh3)4 as a precatalyst and an enantioenriched phosphoramidite ligand featuring a morpholine functionality. Mechanistic investigations unveil that the PPh3 derived from the Pd(PPh3)4 and the morpholine-containing phosphoramidite work as cooperative phosphorus and Brønsted base catalysts to promote the reaction.

Abstract:A tandem coupling-ketooxygenation reaction of readily accessible enediyne-carboxylic compounds with inner alkynes has been developed that utilizes the PdCl2/CuBr2 catalytic system under an O2 atmosphere and assembles a class of isoindolinones and o-acylbenzoic acids. The two oxygen atoms are regioselectively incorporated into enediyne units at the 1- and 6-positions from atmospheric molecular oxygen and H2O, respectively, during the present process. This study uncovered a formal [4C + 2C] benzannulation-diketonization of enediynes and alkynes via a coupling and decoupling strategy.

Abstract:An efficient and highly regioselective route to synthesize polysubstituted 1,3,4-alkatrien-2-yl cyclopropane derivatives via Pd(0)-catalyzed highly regioselective coupling cyclization of (2,3-butadienyl)malonate or bis(phenylsulfonyl)methane with propargylic carbonates was reported. The reaction proceeded smoothly under neutral conditions to afford the products in 73-96% yields. The products may be efficiently converted to cyclopentenone derivatives via a catalytic Pauson-Khand reaction under ambient conditions.

Abstract:Herein, the work demonstrates an electrochemically paired electrolysis approach facilitating the efficient achievement of the electrooxidative 1,3-oxo/carboamination of arylcyclopropanes under mild conditions. The formation of 1,3-arylamination of arylcyclopropanes involves commercially available amine redox mediators through a radical-radical process. In addition, the successful execution of β-amino ketones also occurs under atmospheric conditions. The control experiments supported the existence of key benzylic radical intermediates in the reaction pathway.

Abstract:The Pd(II)-catalyzed intramolecular carbonylative cyclization reaction of aryl alkenes and aryl alkenols is reported for the synthesis of structurally diverse chromanes. PdCl2(CH3CN)(2) was used as the catalyst and CuCl2 as the oxidant under the balloon pressure of CO. The reaction is conducted under mild conditions, and chromane-type esters and lactones can be generated in a highly regio- and stereoselective manner.

Abstract:The ambiphilic reactivity of alkyl sulfonyl fluorides in the stereoselective synthesis of diverse cyclopropanes from ole-fins under palladium(II) catalysis is presented. The sulfonyl fluoride functionality serves as both an acidifying group and an internal oxidant within the ambiphile, enabling the successive carbopalladation and oxidative addition steps in the catalytic cycle, respectively. The transformation grants access to cis-substituted cyclopropanes and exhibits broad compatibility with various alkyl sulfonyl fluorides, including those bearing –CN, –CO2R, isoxazolyl, pyrazolyl, and aryl groups. With internal alkene substrates, 1,2-3-trisubstituted cyclopropanes that are otherwise challenging to synthesize are formed in good to moderate yield and predictable diastereoselectivity. Detailed mechanistic insights from reaction progress kinetic analysis (RPKA) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the SN2-type C–SO2F oxidative addition is the turnover-limiting and diastereoselectivity-determining step.

Abstract:Cyclopropanes are not only privileged motifs in many natural products, agrochemicals, and pharmaceuticals, but also highly versatile intermediates in synthetic chemistry. As such, great effort has been devoted to the cyclopropane construction. However, novel catalytic methods for cyclopropanation with two abundant substrates, mild conditions, high functional group tolerance, and broad scope are still highly desirable. Herein, we report an intermolecular electrocatalytic cyclopropanation of alkenyl trifluoroborates with methylene compounds. The reaction uses simple diphenyl sulfide as the electrocatalyst under base-free conditions. And thus, a broad scope of various methylene compounds as well as vinyltrifluoroborates is demonstrated, including styrenyl, 1,3-dienyl, fluorosulfonyl, and base-sensitive substrates. Preliminary mechanistic studies are presented, revealing the critical role of the boryl substituent to facilitate the desired pathway and the role of water as the hydrogen atom source.

Abstract:Herein, we report the Pd(0)-catalyzed intermolecular asymmetric dearomative [3 + 2] annulation of phenols with vinyl cyclopropanes via in situ generated ortho-quinone methide intermediates. A series of highly functionalized spiro-[5,6] bicycles which bear three contiguous stereogenic centers including one all-carbon quaternary were obtained with excellent stereoselectivities. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that the reactions were controlled by thermodynamics.

Abstract:Palladium-catalyzed C-H functionalization of acyldiazomethanes with aryl iodides has been developed. This reaction is featured by the retention of the diazo functionality in the transformation, thus constituting a novel method for the introduction of diazo functionality to organic molecules. Consistent with the experimental results, the density functional theory (DFT) calculation indicates that the formation of Pd-carbene species in the catalytic cycle through dinitrogen extrusion from the palladium ethyl diazoacetate (Pd-EDA) complex is less favorable. The reaction instead proceeds through Ag2CO3 assisted deprotonation and subsequently reductive elimination to afford the products with diazo functionality remained. This C-H functionalization transformation can be further combined with the recently evolved palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling reaction of diazo compounds with aryl iodides to develop a tandem coupling process for the synthesis of α,α-diaryl esters. DFT calculation supports the involvement of Pd-carbene as reactive intermediate in the catalytic cycle, which goes through facile carbene migratory insertion with a low energy barrier (3.8 kcal/mol).

Abstract:Cyclopropanes with three chiral centers were afforded in good to high yields with dr ratio of 4–23:1 and ee of 83–99% in the reaction of acyclic amides with monosubstituted allyl carbonates as well as polyenyl carbonates under the Pd-catalysis in the presence of (Sphos,R)-SIOCPhox L1 as the ligand, while allylic alkylated products were provided only if (Rphos,R)-SIOCPhox L2 was the ligand. The amide group of product was easily reduced to hydroxymethyl group in high yield. The active reaction intermediate was determined and transition states for cyclopropanation and allylation were calculated. The origin of cyclopropane formation was investigated by experiments, NMR studies, X-ray analysis of allyl-Pd-ligand complexes, and DFT calculations.

Abstract:Efficient palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions of alpha-diazocarbonyl compounds and arylboronic acids or aryl halides have been developed. The reaction proceeds smoothly for a range of diazo compounds, boronic acids, and halides. The coupling reaction conditions tolerate various substituents on the aromatic rings of the substrates, such as chloro, fluoro, acyl, oxo, ester, and nitro groups. This coupling reaction constitutes a novel access to alpha-aryl-substituted alpha,beta-unsaturated carbonyl compounds. Mechanistically, palladium-carbene is supposed to be the key intermediate; its formation is followed by migratory insertion of an aryl group to the carbenic carbon of the palladium-carbene complex and subsequent beta-hydride elimination. Kinetic isotope effect (KIE) data measured for intra- and intermolecular competition experiments suggest that beta-hydride elimination is not involved in the rate-determining step.

Abstract:Abstract The activated butadienylcyclopropane has been successfully developed as a new precursor of the Pd‐π‐allyl zwitterion for the Pd‐catalyzed intermolecular [3+2] cycloaddition, which proceeds preferentially over its intramolecular rearrangement into a vinyl cyclopentane. Multi‐substituted cyclopentanes bearing a butadienyl group are synthesized through the Pd‐catalyzed [3+2] cycloaddition reaction of activated butadienylcyclopropanes with methylenemalononitrile derivatives in high yield under mild conditions. The cycloaddition reaction could proceed well on a gram scale.

Abstract:The chiral ruthenium porphyrin complex ( S , R )-cmcpor-RuCO effectively catalyzes the asymmetric cyclopropanation reaction of 1,3-diene derivatives and tert -butyl 2-cyano-2-diazoacetate to produce highly enantio-enriched substituted vinylcyclopropanes under mild reaction conditions. This catalytic reaction can be applied to a variety of substrates, including alkyl- and aryl-substituted 1,3-diene derivatives (22 examples), as well as diene derivatives from natural products (8 examples). High product yields (up to 97%) and high enantioselectivities (up to 95% ee) were achieved. Monitoring the generation and transformation of ruthenium carbene intermediates using 1 H NMR spectroscopy provides insights into the catalytic reaction mechanisms.
