Abstract:Objective: To study the advance of research on nitric oxide and exercise. Data sources: Using the key terms of "nitric oxide and exercise", we searched the Pubmed database for the relevant articles about the relationships between nitric oxide and exercise published from January 1980 to January 2006. At the same time, using the same key terms in Chinese, we searched the Chinese full-text database CNKI during the same period, and the related Chinese books were searched by handiwork. Study selection: All articles were selected firstly, and those in coincidence with the objective were collected, while the unrelated articles were excluded. Inclusion criterion: 1 The relationships between nitric oxide and exercise; 2 The impact factors of selected journals were great; 3 These articles were published latterly. Data extraction: All the selected articles were looked up for full-texts, and a total of 38 articles were closed related, 15 of them were applied to review. Data synthesis: Totally 38 articles were concisely expatiated in the chemical property and physiological function of nitric oxide; the effects of nitric oxide on intramuscular contraction, oxygenous ingestion, oxygenous consumption; the function of nitric oxide to regulate the redistribution of blood flow and the transportation of glucose in physical activity along with the impacts of acute exercise and long-term exercise to nitric oxide. Moreover, the research achievements in recent years were summarized. Conclusion: Nitric oxide has extensive biological effects on our bodies, and at present the study about the reciprocity between nitric oxide and body as well as exercise just begins in China, only a little effective work has been achieved. The correlative research in the field of international sports medicine is flourished just in recent years, too. The notion that can clarify internal essence or system is few and the results are often disputable, so this domain still desiderates comprehensive discussion.
