Abstract:Highly ordered pure-silica MCM-41 materials possessing well-defined morphology have been successfully prepared with extremely low surfactant concentration at room temperature. TEM, XRD, and NMR techniques; and synthetic factors (such as pH and amount of water) have been investigated extensively. Experimental results suggested that highly ordered MCM-41 material was formed by a deposition mechanism with silicate rod-like micelles.

Abstract:MCM-41 silica particles with several morphologies have been controllably synthesized with a basic medium. Nanospherical MCM-41 silica with an average size of 110 nm was produced through reaction of extremely low surfactant concentrations of CTAB with TEOS in the sodium hydroxide medium at 353 K, while a submicrometer-sized silica rod, 0.3-0.6 mum in diameter and 1 mum in length, and micrometer-sized oblate silica with nominal diameter around 1 mum were synthesized in aqueous ammonia, where the size and the morphology were controlled by varing the content of the solvent. A morphogenetic mechanism that is based on the deposition of self-assembled silicate surfactant rodlike micelles is proposed and explains well the controllability of the morphology.

Abstract:To obtain high-specific-surface-area and uniform silica nanospheres of fibrous morphologies, the hydrothermal method with and without stirring was adopted to fabricate the nanoparticles, and the fabrication mechanism as well as the influencing factors on their development were explored. Taking fibrous silica nanospheres prepared by microwave method under the same condition as references, scanning electron microscope ( SEM) and transmission electron microscope ( TEM) were applied to observe morphologies of the silica nanospheres developed by hydrothermal and microwave methods, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy ( FT-IR ) to identify chemical compositions of the three silica nanospheres, X-ray diffractometer ( XRD) to reveal the crystal structures, as well as nitrogen ( N2 ) adsorption-desorption isotherms to characterize the type of adsorption-desorption and pore diameters, respectively. The results indicate that nanospheres synthesized by hydrothermal method possess bigger sizes and more uniform morphologies. Especially, the effectiveness of hydrothermal method with stirring was more obvious. These three kinds of the as-prepared silica nanospheres own same chemical structures and chemical functional groups, and belong to Ⅳ adsorption-desorption isotherms with H3 loops. Specific surface area ( and pore volumes) of the three nanospheres were 480.156 m2/g(1.287 cm3/g),464.757 m2/g(0.654 cm3/g) and 429.351 m2/g (0.726 cm3/g), respectively. The pressure of the reaction system and the degree of uniformity of the reaction mother liquor collectively endow the nanospheres with special properties like morphologies and structural differences. The former accelerates uniform micellar emulsion, and the latter prompts formation of reverse micelles.

Abstract:MCM-41 has been synthesized in-situ on silica both using solution silicate and surface silicate as Si sources. The long-range structure of MCM-41 synthesized with solution silicate as Si source is better than that of MCM-41 with surface silicate as Si source, while either is as stable as to preserve the long-range ordered structure during calcination. For the MCM-41 sample synthesized with surface silicate as Si source, the pore diameters are narrowly distributed with approximately 3.81nm in the maximum distribution.

Abstract:In this work, we present a systematic study on the complete control over the sphere diameters of MCM-41 nanospheres with different pore sizes. The mesoporous silica nanospheres with diameter range from 40 nm to 160 nm are synthesized by using cationic quaternary ammonium surfactants as template and TEOS as silicon source in sodium hydroxide aqueous solution via sol-gel supermolecular method. Nanospheres with fixed diameter can be obtained through the precise control over the molar ratio of NaOH/TEOS and other synthetic conditions. The range of sphere diameter for each sample prepared under adjustable reaction conditions is in a sharp distribution. Moreover, the formation mechanism for nanospheres with controlled morphological and structural features is proposed, and we suggest the optimal synthesis conditions of the MCM-41 nanospheres for the minimization of the Gibbs free energy deltaG. Besides, after depositing vanadium species on the MCM-41 support, the catalytic performance of V-MCM-41 for the selective oxidation of styrene by hydroperoxide increases with the diameter of the supports decreasing.

Abstract:Hollow-shell mesoporous MCM-48 silica has been hydrothermally synthesized in basic medium by a new method using ternary mixtures of cationic surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), nonionic surfactant poly(ethyleneglycol) monooctylphenyl ether (OP-10) and anionic surfactant sodium laurate (SL) as templates, with tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) as silicon source. The synthesis can be performed at an extremely low molar ratio of surfactant to silicon (0.05:1–0.07:1) and extremely low surfactant concentration (1.76–2.4wt.%). Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), N2 adsorption–desorption isotherms, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) are used to characterize the synthesized samples. It suggests that the synergism effects of the ternary mixed system of cationic–neutral–anionic surfactants help to enhance the ability to form the micelles and favor the formation of cubic MCM-48 with high specific surface areas and well-defined three-dimensional channel systems. The results of 1H NMR provide a better understanding of the possible formation mechanism of micelles.

Abstract:MCM-41 was successfully synthesized in acid system under ultrasonic conditions using cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTMABr) as the template and tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) as silica source. It is shown that synthesis under ultrasonic conditions (US) is an effective process to produce high-quality mesoporous silica within shorter time compared with the conventional hydrothermal synthesis (RHS) at room temperature. Characterization results revealed that MCM-41 synthesized under ultrasonic conditions has a regular spherical morphology with a diameter range of 1-4 mu m (average 2 mu m) and has a very low content of impurity. In the present paper, the influence of initial reaction composition, treatment conditions, and ultrasonic power on the degree of structural ordering were investigated to optimize synthesis conditions. The optimum ultrasonic power was found to be about 460 W and the ultrasonic treatment time was at least 2 h. Moreover, the influence of ultrasonic effect on the synthesis mechanism of MCM-41 was also discussed.

Abstract:Mesoporous silicas with hierarchical structures were synthesized under a mild alkali condition by cationic or mixed cationic-nonionic surfactant templating. When cetylpyridium bromide was used, a novel morphology of mesoporous silica of type MCM-41 was formed. It was obsearved. that single nanotubes with diameter of about 5 nm and bundles of nanotubes grew from the (001) surface of the mesoporous silica particles, forming a paintbrush-like morphology. The synthesis process was investigated and the formation mechanism of such a surface nanotube patterning is discussed. When mixed surfactant of cetylpyridium chloride and Triton X-100 was used, a mixed ordered-disordered hierarchical mesostructure with arc rings of submicrometer scales was observed in the synthesized mesoporous silica which exhibits a narrow pore size distribution, high surface area and a large pore volume. Are ropes consisting of ordered mesopores, as well as many spheres of submicrometer in diameter with shells of about 40 nm in thickness consisting of ordered arrays of mesopores, were observed, though the majority of the particles contained disordered mesoporous microdomains. This material lacks overall long-range ordering whereas local ordering of mesopores exists.
From Hollow Nanosphere to Hollow Microsphere: Mild Buffer Provides Easy Access to Tunable Silica Structure

Abstract:A facile synthesis method for producing silica hollow spheres from nano- to microsize level is realized by adjusting the hydrolysis and condensation kinetics of silane precursors in a mild buffer solution (NaH2PO4-Na2HPO4, pH approximate to 7.0) in the presence of F127 (EO106PO70EO106) surfactant. Characterization using transmission electron microscopy, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, and nitrogen sorption techniques reveals that the silica hollow nanospheres with outer diameter of about 12 nm can be obtained with tetramethoxysilane as silane precursor. Silica hollow nanospheres (similar to 20 nm) can also be prepared using tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) as silane precursor with the addition of hydrolysis and condensation catalyst NH4F. Using TEOS as the silane precursor without F-, the formation of silica hollow microspheres (0.5 similar to 8 mu m) was observed. Time-resolved in situ UV-Raman results show that TEOS does not hydrolyze at room temperature, and the hydrolysis of TEOS occurs immediately at room temperature when NH4F was added to the buffer solution. The fast hydrolysis and condensation rates of silane precursor favor the formation of hollow nanospheres through the condensation of silicate around a single micelle of F127 in NaH2PO4-Na2HPO4 buffer solution. The construction of hollow microspheres is attributed to the formation of O/W emulsion by the hydrophobic TEOS with the aid of F127 surfactant due to the existence of unhydrolyzed TEOS at room temperature under current synthetic conditions.
Synthesis of MCM-41 Mesoporous Silica by Microwave Irradiation and ZnO Nanoparticles Confined in MCM-41

Abstract:Pure silica MCM-41 molecular sieves were synthesized successfully by traditional hydrothermal method and microwave irradiation. The two MCM-41 have the expected hexagonal structures according to the XRD results. It was found that the MCM-41 synthesized by microwave method has more uniform pore size than the normal MCM-41 determined by N2 adsorption method. Furthermore, it is more efficient to synthesize MCM-41 by microwave method than by the normal hydrothermal method, and only 30 min is enough for the microwave irradiation for synthesizing MCM-41, while 48~72 h is necessary for the normal hydrothermal synthesis. By XRD, TEM results and degradation of phenol in solution by the use of photocatalysis of ZnO-MCM-41, nano ZnO was successfully confined in the MCM-41 by liquid phase process and the hexagonal structure of MCM-41 was retained after confining nano ZnO in the mesopores.
Controlled Synthesis of Mesoporous Silicas Mcm-48 and Mcm-41 by Using Mixed Templates

Abstract:Mesoporous silica MCM-48 and MCM-41 were hydrothermally synthesized in alkaline medium by using mixed cationic-nonionic triblock copolymer surfactant (P123, 2-methyloxirane; oxirane; CAS No. 9003-11-6)as template. By altering the ratio of CTAB (cetyltriethylammonium bromide) to TEOS (tetraethoxysilane, tetraethyl silicate), the mesoporous molecular sieves were obtained with different Structures. The amount of CTAB can be largely decreased by adding P123 into the synthesis system. It is found that the molar ratios of CTAB/TEOS between 0.12 and 0.13 are favorable for the formation of highly ordered MCM-48 mesostructure and that of CTAB/TEOS between 0.04 and 0.08 are favorable for the formation of highly ordered MCM-41 mesostructure. XRD, TEM and N-2 sorption measurements show that the products have highly ordered mesostructure with high surface area, large pore volume and narrow pore size distribution.

Abstract:Here we report for the first time, a novel method of low temperature vapor phase hydrolysis for the production of nano-structured silica particles. Silica nanoparticles were obtained by the hydrolysis of silicon tetrachloride vapor with water vapor at a low temperature range (150-250 degrees C). The effects of reaction temperature and residence time on the specific surface area and size distribution were determined to obtain optimal synthesis conditions. Silica nanoparticles with a specific surface area of 418 m(2) g(-1) and an average size of 141.7 nm were obtained at a temperature of 150 degrees C and with a residence time of 5 s. The particle morphology, phase composition, chemical composition, thermal analysis, and chemical functional groups present were determined by TEM, XRD, XRF, TGA, and IR methods, respectively. Results indicated that silica synthesized by low temperature vapor phase hydrolysis method is an amorphous mesoporous material, with an approximately spherical shape, a mass friction demission of 2.29, and a high hydroxyl density of 13.03 nm(-2). This method provides a simple and environmentally benign way for the mass production of silica nanoparticles, as well as a quick method for the preparation of functional silica materials.
Stable Ordered Mesoporous Silica Materials Templated by High-Temperature Stable Surfactant Micelle in Alkaline Media

Abstract:Ordered hexagonal mesoporous silica material (JLU-30) has been successfully synthesized in alkaline media at high temperature (> 160 degreesC, using cationic (1,3-dimethyl-2-imidazolidin-2-ylidene)hexadecylmethyl-ammonium bromide (DIHAB) as a template, and characterized with X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms, differential thermal analysis (DTA), and thermogravimetric analysis (TG), as well as Al-27 and Si-29 nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. Mesoporous JLU-30 shows much higher hydrothermal stability than MCM-41. Si-29 NMR spectra indicate that the pore walls of JLU-30 samples synthesized at high temperature (160 degreesC) are fully condensed, giving a Q(4)/Q(3) ratio as high as 6.2. In contrast, MCM-41 synthesized at relatively low temperature (100 degreesC) shows the Q(4)/Q(3) + Q(2) ratio at 1.1. Such unique structural feature might be responsible for the observed highly hydrothermal stability of the mesoporous silica materials (JLU-30). Furthermore, heteroatoms such as Al and Ti species have been easily introduced into the mesoporous walls of JLU-30 by using a simple mixture of TEOS with aluminum or titanium source in the initial reaction gel.
Transformation of Lamellar Silicate into the Mesoporous Molecular Sieve MCM-41

Abstract:Mesoporous silicates synthesized in strongly basic media from sodium silicate in the presence of cetyltrimethylammonium chloride, a cationic surfactant. The formation of a lamellar phase and its transformation into hexagonal MCM-41 were studied by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), Si-29 magic-angle-spinning (MAS) NMR and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The gel mixture (pH > 14) is transparent. Upon acidification, a layered phase with interplanar spacing d = 35 Angstrom rapidly forms at pH = 13 and gradually transforms into the lamellar phase with d = 31 Angstrom. The Si-29 MAS NMR spectrum of the layered phase is broad and dominated by the resonance from Si(OSi)(3)O-M+ (Q(3)) structural units (M stands for the surfactant cation). The spectrum of the lamellar phase is well resolved with a more intense line from the Si(OSi)(4) (Q(4)) structural units, indicating a more regular atomic arrangement. The hexagonal phase is obtained at pH = 11.5 upon acidification of the gel, or when the pH of the intermediate product containing the lamellar phase is adjusted to 7-9 and the hydrothermal treatment continued. The hexagonal phase gives a broad Si-29 NMR spectrum dominated by the Q(4) resonance, indicating a less ordered local atomic arrangement in comparison with the lamellar phase. We suggest that the transformation is driven by the increasing reactivity of the silicate species with increasing acidity of the gel, which facilitates further aggregation of uncondensed silicate between the layers.
Synthesis of Aluminosilicate MCM-41 Using Oligomeric Surfactant As Template

Abstract:Using oligomeric surfactant (The molecular formula of surfactant see Fig.1) as template,aluminosilicate MCM-41 with high structure order was synthesized under neutral condition. The effect of different molar ratio of silicate to aluminate on the structure of the samples was researched by small-angle X-ray diffraction (SXRD) and N_2 adsorption-desorption technique and scanning electron microscope(SEM). Results showed that the structure of resulting samples belonged to hexagonal symmetry. With the increase of the molar ratio of silicate to aluminate,the ordering of pore structure increased. When the molar ratio of silicate to aluminate was more than 1,high quality of sample was obtained. The ordering of pore structure was highest at 9.5:1 of the molar ratio of silicate to aluminate. Nitrogen adsorption-desorption indicated that there existed type Ⅳ adsorption isotherm. With the increase of the molar ratio of silicate to aluminate the BET surface area and total pore volume of the samples increased. The molar ratio of silicate to aluminate had no distinct effect on the most probable pore size which nearly around 2.0?nm,and had small effect on the pore wall thickness which were between 2.66-3.30?nm. SEM showed that the shapes of particles were irregular. The particle size was about 0.5 μm,and the molar ratio of silicate to aluminate had no effect on the particle size.

Abstract:Ordered mesoporous silicas (SBA-15 or MCM-41) have been directly hydrothermally synthesized at high temperatures (160–180 °C) by using a solo hydrocarbon surfactant (P123 or CTAB). 1H NMR spectra and thermogravimetric (TG) curves showed that these hydrocarbon surfactants decomposed during the preparation process at such high temperatures. Accordingly, we proposed that the surfactant micelle plays an important role during the cooperative self-assembly of the silicates and surfactants in the initial stage for the formation of basic mesostructure, and it is no longer indispensable in the subsequent hydrothermal treatment at high temperature.
Monodisperse mesoporous silica nanoparticles of distinct topology

Abstract:Monodisperse and uniform high-quality MCM(Mobil Composition of Matter)-48-type CMSNs (Cubic Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticles) are readily prepared by simply optimizing the molar ratio of ethanol and surfactant in the system TEOS-CTAB-NaOH-H2O-EtOH (TEOS=tetraethyl orthosilicate, CTAB=cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, EtOH=ethanol). In the absence of ethanol only hexagonal mesoporous silica with ellipsoidal and spherical morphology are obtained. The presence of ethanol drives a mesophase transformation from hexagonal to mixed hexagonal/cubic, further to purely cubic, and finally to a mixed cubic/lamellar. This is accompanied by a morphology evolution involving a mixture of ellipses/spheres, regular rods, uniform spheres, and finally a mixture of spheres/flakes. Preserving the three-dimensional (3D) cubic MCM-48 structure, use of a small amount of ethanol is beneficial to the improvement of the monodispersity of the CMSNs. Moreover, the quality of the CMSNs can also be controlled by changing the surfactant concentration or adjusting the stirring rate. All MSNs were characterized using powder X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and N2 physisorption, indicating highly long-range ordered pore arrays, high specific surface areas (max. 1173 m2g-1) as well as high pore volumes (max. 1.14 cm3g-1). The monodispersity of the CMSNs was verified by statistical particle size distribution from SEM (scanning electron microscopy)/TEM (transmission electron microscopy) images and DLS (dynamic light scattering). The mesophase transformation can be rationalized on the basis of an ethanol-driven change of the surfactant packing structure and charge matching at the surfactant/silicate interface. The corresponding morphology evolution can be elucidated by an ethanol-controlled hydrolysis rate of TEOS and degree of condensation of oligomeric silicate species via a nucleation and growth process.
High-temperature synthesis of stable ordered mesoporous silica materials by using fluorocarbon-hydrocarbon surfactant mixtures.

Abstract:Highly ordered hexagonal mesoporous silica materials (JLU-20) with uniform pore sizes have been successfully synthesized at high temperature (150-220degreesC) by using fluorocarbon-hydrocarbon surfactant mixtures. The fluorocarbon-hydrocarbon surfactant mixtures combine the advantages of both stable fluorocarbon surfactants and ordered hydrocarbon surfactants, giving ordered and stable mixed micelles at high temperature (150-220degreesC). Mesoporous JLU-20 shows extraordinary stability towards hydrothermal treatment (100% steam at 800degreesC for 2 h or boiling water for 80 h), thermal treatment (calcination at 1000degreesC for 4 h), and toward mechanical treatment (compressed at 740 MPa). Transmission electron microscopy images of JLU-20 show well-ordered hexagonal arrays of mesopores with one-dimensional (M) channels and further confirm that JLU-20 has a two-dimensional (2D) hexagonal (P6mm) mesostructure. Si-29 HR MAS NMR spectra of as-synthesized JLU-20 shows that JLU-20 is primarily made up of fully condensed Q(4) silica units (delta = - 112 ppm) with a small contribution from incompletely cross-linked Q(3) (delta = - 102 ppm) as deduced from the very high Q(4)/Q(3) ratio of 6.5, indicating that the mesoporous walls of JLU-20 are fully condensed. Such unique structural features should be directly attributed to the high-temperature synthesis, which is responsible for the observed high thermal, hydrothermal, and mechanical stability of the mesoporous silica materials with well-ordered hexagonal symmetry. Furthermore, the concept of "high-temperature-synthesis" is successfully extended to the preparation of three-dimensional (3D) cubic mesoporous silica materials by the assistance of a fluorocarbon surfactant as a co-template. The obtained material, designated JLU-21, has a well-ordered cubic Im3m mesostructure with fully condensed pore walls and shows unusually high hydrothermal stability, as compared with conventional cubic mesoporous silica materials such as SBA-16.

Abstract:Well-dispersed silica microspheres (similar to 500 nm) with solid core and ordered mesopore shell were synthesized by amphiphilic triblock copolymers (Pluronic P123) and quaternary ammonium surfactant (CTAB) as co-templates. The mesoporous silica shell with large surface area (188 m(2)/g) has mesochannels parallel to the spherical surface. Furthermore, the hydrothermal treatment (similar to 130 degrees C) was introduced to enlarge the pore size (similar to 7.3 nm) and pore volume (0.23 cm(3)/g).

Abstract:10-60 nm-sized mesoporous silica particles with ordered or worm-like pore structures were controllably synthesized in extremely dilute surfactant solution, and the lowest concentrations of TEOS and CTAB were 12.45 mK 1.52 mM, respectively. The synthesis of nanometer-sized Al-incorporated mesoporous silica particles (Al-MS) was also performed under the similar conditions. Compared to the mesoporous silica without doping of aluminum, those Al-incorporated silica particles have a certain textural mesoporosity. The results indicate that the size and pore structure of mesoporous silica can be adjusted by changing the concentration of reactants. The mesoporous silica nanoparticles, including AI-MS, were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), small-angle X-ray diffraction (SAXRD), as well as nitrogen adsorption/desorption techniques. It was suggested that the formation of the mesoporous silica nanoparticles could be attributed to the deposition of self-assembled silicate micelles. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
