Abstract:Greenhouse gas(GHG)emission causing global warming has become the focus of the international community. Activities in construction and related industries produce large amounts of greenhouse gases. In order to analyze the life cycle of greenhouse gas emissions from construction and related activities,a quantitative life cycle carbon emission accounting model was developed based on the life cycle assessment(LCA)theory. The calculation scope for the construction life-cycle carbon emissions was identified. A low-rise reinforced concrete residential building in Beijing was selected as an example and its life cycle carbon emissions were calculated. Finally,based on the measured results,the potential ways for the construction industry to reduce carbon emissions were discussed.

Abstract:The emission of greenhouse gases(GHG) will lead to global warming.A large amount of GHG is generated during the building construction period and relevant materials' production period.In this paper,based on the theory of life cycle assessment(LCA),a carbon emission model was developed to study the building's GHG emission.Meanwhile,in order to discuss the carbon emission reduction target and corresponding methods,different structural styles of wood,concrete and steel were selected to carry out the quantitative assessment and comparative analysis.The results shown that the carbon emission of per functional unit(1 m2 building annually) from wood structure building was lower than other structures.

Abstract:Urban residential buildings are the prime contributors to carbon emissions, whose reduction is significantly affected by old residential areas as essential components of urban renewal. In current studies on the potential for carbon reduction in residential localities, the measurement standard mostly used is the amount of carbon reduced during operations because of the energy-saving renovation of building monomers. This study conducted a life cycle assessment for the carbon emission impact analysis of the renovation of old residential areas, with a comprehensive consideration of carbon emissions at the materialization, demolition, and use stages of the renovation process. Five systems in these areas were evaluated: landscape greening, building monomers, water resources, solid waste, and infrastructure. An actual residential renovation case was used as a reference in comparing the life cycle carbon reduction effects of different technical measures. The results showed that carbon reduction effects are overestimated by 5.54% (from 29.59% to 35.13%) when embodied carbon is disregarded. Among the renovation measures, adding green spaces, recycling garbage, and replacing energy-saving lamps in public areas offer short carbon payback, whereas the addition of rooftop solar photovoltaic panels is the most efficient carbon-reduction measure. This study completes and expands the scope of accounting for residential renovation from spatial and temporal scales. It can also guide the low-carbon renovation of old residential areas to help cities save energy and reduce emissions.

Abstract:The life-cycle assessment method, which originates from general products and services, has gradually come to be applied to investigations of the life-cycle carbon emissions (LCCE) of buildings. A literature review was conducted to clarify LCCE implications, calculations, and reductions in the context of buildings. A total of 826 global building carbon emission calculation cases were obtained from 161 studies based on the framework of the building life-cycle stage division stipulated by ISO 21930 and the basic principles of the emission factor (EF) approach. The carbon emission calculation methods and results are discussed herein, based on the modules of production, construction, use, end-of-life, and supplementary benefits. According to the hotspot distribution of a building's carbon emissions, carbon reduction strategies are classified into six groups for technical content and benefits analysis, including reducing the activity data pertaining to building materials and energy, reducing the carbon EFs of the building materials and energy, and exploiting the advantages of supplementary benefits. The research gaps and challenges in current building LCCE studies are summarized in terms of research goals and ideas, calculation methods, basic parameters, and carbon reduction strategies; development suggestions are also proposed.

Abstract:There is great energy consumption in China whose newly-built constructions rank the top worldwide these years, which results in enormous greenhouse gas emissions. This study aims at analyzing the energy consumption of macro-level buildings system in China based on the theory of Life-Cycle Energy Analysis (LCEA), pointing out the key factors in every Life-Cycle phase of buildings and calculating the carbon dioxide emissions related to buildings. In the conclusion, it is indicated that the energy consumptions of building materials production and building operation account for largest share in building energy consumption. Abstract:Based on the theory of life cycle assessment (LCA), this article analyzes the influence factors on carbon emissions from residential buildings. In the article, the life cycle of residential buildings has been divided into five stages: building materials production period, construction period, operation and maintenance period, demolition period, and solid waste recycle and disposal period. Based on this definition, the authors provide a theoretical model to calculate carbon emissions of residential building life cycle. In particular, the factor of human activities was introduced in the calculation of carbon emissions from the buildings. Furthermore, the authors put forward a model for calculation with the unit of carbon emissions for per-capita living space.

With the analysis of building life-cycle energy consumption, carbon dioxide emissions related to buildings were calculated. It was indicated that the energy consumptions of building materials production and building operation account for largest share in building energy consumption. Reducing energy consumption on building operation and building materials were important to building energy saving and carbon dioxide mitigation.

Abstract:Life cycle thinking has become widely applied in the assessment for building environmental performance. Various tool are developed to support the application of life cycle assessment (LCA) method. This paper focuses on the carbon emission during the building construction stage. A partial LCA framework is established to assess the carbon emission in this phase. Furthermore, five typical LCA tools programs have been compared and analyzed for demonstrating the current application of LCA tools and their limitations in the building construction stage. Based on the analysis of existing tools and sustainability demands in building, a new computer calculation system has been developed to calculate the carbon emission for optimizing the sustainability during the construction stage. The system structure and detail functions are described in this paper. Finally, a case study is analyzed to demonstrate the designed LCA framework and system functions. This case is based on a typical building in UK with different plans of masonry wall and timber frame to make a comparison. The final results disclose that a timber frame wall has less embodied carbon emission than a similar masonry structure. 16% reduction was found in this study.

Abstract:The whole life cycle carbon emission of buildings was calculated in this paper. Based on the whole life cycle evaluation theory, a carbon emission calculation model was established by using a single urban building as an example. The whole life cycle building of carbon emission calculation includes five stages: planning and design, building materials preparation, construction, operational maintenance, as well as dismantlement. It provides a reference for standardizing the calculation process of building carbon emissions by analyzed the carbon emissions and composition characteristics of each stage of the life cycle of the case house. The calculation results demonstrate that the carbon emission during the operational maintenance and building materials preparation stages in the whole life cycle of the building account for 78.05% and 20.59% respectively. These are the two stages with the greatest emission reduction potential.

Abstract:As most promoted solution of climate change, green buildings become more popular and widely promoted in China recently. This paper compared the carbon emissions of green buildings with non-green buildings; therefore, a life cycle carbon emission assessment approach (LCA) was attempted. In the present paper, we have integrated existing database Building Environmental Load Evaluation System (BELES) developed by Tsinghua University and twenty-six real existing buildings (nine residential and seventeen commercial buildings). Buildings located in two major climate zones were selected, namely, zone II and III. Five phases were defined for a whole life cycle of building: Phase 1 Raw Materials, Phase 2 Transportation, Phase 3 Construction, Phase 4 Operation & Maintenance and Phase 5 Demolishment. In each phase, the emissions were calculated separately.

Abstract:Carbon emission of residential buildings is calculated based on LCA (life cycle assessment). The influence factors, such as the insulation thickness, air conditioning form and service life are analyzed. A typical energy efficient residential building was selected to calculate its carbon emission in different conditions. In this case, when the insulation thickness is 100mm, the life cycle carbon emission is the minimum. In other words, each residential building has its optimum insulation thickness. And with the building service life extending, the emission will decrease. As for the air conditioning forms, the results show that the carbon emission of residential building with split air conditioning is less than with centralized air conditioning.

Abstract:In recent decades, the carbon emissions from building structures have posed a huge threat to the environment and to some extent contributed to global warming. Life cycle assessment (LCA) is the most commonly used carbon emission assessment technique. However, this is a challenging task as the amount of data for a single material is enormous and difficult to process. A new method utilizing the latest computer technology has been proposed. This paper uses Building Information Model (BIM) and Revit software to establish a three-dimensional model of the structure. BIM can export and imply material information based on other platforms. This makes it possible to link BIM tools with lifecycle assessment by defining environmental data for each unit in the model. The entire process is divided into six stages. This article focuses on the calculation of carbon emissions during the construction phase and introduces a method that helps with early structural decision-making. Through case studies of existing buildings, the quantity of materials used in the building was analyzed, and the relationship between pre construction carbon emission factors and material quantity was solved.

Abstract:The building sector contributes substantially to worldwide greenhouse gas emissions, and efforts to meet emission reduction targets have been gaining importance. Accordingly, the present study investigates the importance of building embodied emissions to the entire life cycle and potential approaches for low-carbon development in China. Life-cycle assessment was proposed for the analysis of building emissions, dividing the life cycle into production, construction, operation, and disposal phases. The temporal perspectives of emissions were considered, including the potential improvements to energy efficiency and the weighted average impacts for delayed emissions in the operation and disposal phases. A case study of a residential building in a cold region was analyzed, and scenario analyses were conducted. The results indicated that the relative contribution of embodied emissions (10551 tCO2e) considering the temporal perspectives could be twice that of conventional calculations. Further discussion revealed that the payback time of constructing a new building could be 45 years compared to the current regional average buildings. Hence, with respect to the high costs and technical limits of passive houses, renovating old buildings with energy saving measures might be the most appropriate approach for implementing the short-term low-carbon development target. Overall, the present study is helpful to better understand the importance of embodied emissions and for policy-making in the regional building sector.

Abstract:Buildings are responsible for more than 40% of global energy usage and as much as 33% of global greenhouse gas emissions in both developed and developing countries. However, the study of carbon emissions over a building's life cycle based on Ecotect and building information modeling in developing areas of Nanjing has yet to be conducted. Therefore, the results and recommendations of this paper represent a contribution to the literature on this topic. The scientific value of this paper is that Ecotect and building information modeling can be helpful in simplifying the estimation of carbon emissions over a building's life cycle because they can provide a majority of the information and calculation tools necessary for performing an life cycle assessment (LCA), which may alleviate the problem of insufficient information when executing an LCA of a building. A sensitivity analysis was performed by changing several parameters to identify the parameters that have the largest impacts on the performance a building. A comparison of the life cycle carbon emissions for each stage showed that the operational stage is the largest contributor to carbon emissions. Approximately 85.4% of the total carbon emissions were generated during operation. The construction stage accounted for 12.6% of the total carbon emissions. Approximately 2% of the total carbon emissions occurred during the demolition stage. Compared to the total carbon emissions over the entire life cycle of the building, carbon sequestration by vegetation was minimal. Thus, these findings indicate that governments can achieve the greatest reductions in carbon emissions by targeting the operational phase of buildings. However, the opportunity for addressing non-operational phases should not be ignored because the average carbon emissions per working area per year of non-operational stages are far greater than those of the use phase.

Abstract:Exiting green building assessment standards sometimes cannot work well for large-scale public buildings due to insufficient attention to the operation and maintenance stage. This paper combines the theory of life cycle assessment (LCA) and building information modeling (BIM) technology, thereby proposing a green building assessment method by calculating the greenhouse gas emissions (GGE) of buildings from cradle to grave. Life cycle GGE (LCGGE) can be divided into three parts, including the materialization stage, the operation and maintenance stage, and the demolition stage. Two pieces of BIM software (Revit and Designbuilder) are applied in this study. A museum in Guangdong, China, with a hot summer and warm winter is selected for a case study. The results show that BIM can provide a rich source of needed engineering information for LCA. In addition, the operation and maintenance stage plays the most important role in the GGE reduction of a building throughout the whole life cycle. This research contributes to the knowledge body concerning green buildings and sustainable construction. It helps to achieve the reduction of GGE over the whole life cycle of a building. This is pertinent to contractors, homebuyers, and governments who are constantly seeking ways to achieve a low-carbon economy.

Abstract:In this paper,based on the stage division and calculation of life cycle carbon emission from residential buildings,the corresponding researches were firstly summarized.It was indicated that most of the studies concerned on the linear separation of the whole life cycle,while the latest work had more considerations on analyzing the materials recycling to meet the sustainable and recyclable needs.Furthermore,in order to guarantee the integrity and accuracy of the carbon emission calculation,the operation stage should be paid more attention.Therefore,the life cycle stages of residential buildings in China should be divided into 5 stages,namely production,construction,operation,maintenance and demolition.The calculation of carbon emission should focus more on the operation stage and the construction stage could be neglected.Meanwhile,the influence factors on calculation should also be considered,such as technology innovations,recycling of construction waste and community landscapes.

Abstract:This paper focuses on the sustainable exploration of building systems, which combines ecological concepts and low-carbon designs for a comprehensive sustainability assessment investigation. The study employed the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)-Emergy and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)-Carbon emission methods to discuss a range of topics, including the main contributing factors, sustainability index verification, sensitivity analysis, and potential improvement measures. From an ecological sustainability perspective, the results indicate that the building operation stage plays a critical role, accounting for approximately 45% of the entire emergy in the building commercial complex. The sustainable index (ESI) is 0.354, which is below the standard of 1. Moreover, the building operation stage also significantly contributes to carbon emissions, particularly in the 50th anniversary of operation. Based on these findings, the study recommends two potential strategies to improve the ecological state and low-carbon design which involve the use of renewable energy and carbon sink improvement, respectively.

Abstract:Life cycle assessment (LCA) is a powerful tool to identify a building’s environmental impact throughout its life cycle. However, LCA does have limits in practice because it does not consider the economic aspect of project implementation. In order to promote LCA application, a more comprehensive evaluation of building life cycle environmental and economic performance must be performed. To address these issues, we propose life cycle green cost assessment (LCGCA), a method that combines LCA with life cycle costing (LCC). In LCGCA the building’s environmental loads are converted to environmental costs based on the trading price of CO 2 certified emission reductions (CERs). These environmental costs are then included into the building life cycle cost. Subsequently an evaluation index of green net present value ( GNPV ) for LCGCA can be obtained. A governmental office building in Beijing was studied using LCGCA. Several design options were compared and the sensitivity of the CER price was analyzed. The research also shows that conclusions reached by LCGCA may be different from those of traditional LCC, which does not include environmental costs. The application of LCGCA needs the support of environmental policies. A sound environmental tax mechanism is expected to be established in China soon, which will enable LCGCA to be a useful tool to guide sustainable building design efficiently.
