Abstract:Boesch’s theorem says that “Suppose that a connected graph G has two non-adjacent 2-degree vertices u1 and u2. Then t(G)≤t(G/{u1,u2}), where t(G) is the number of spanning trees of G.” In this paper, we generalize this theorem as follows: “Suppose that G is a connected graph of order at least 3, and that u1 and u2 are two vertices of degree m and n, respectively, in G. Then t(G)≤mn−m02m+n−2m0t(G/{u1,u2}), where m0(≥0) is the number of multiple edges between u1 and u2.”

Abstract:The spanning tree packing number of a graph G is the maximum number of edge-disjoint spanning trees in G, and the arboricity of G is the minimum number of edge-disjoint forests needed to partition the edge set of G. In this paper, we give bounds on the spanning tree packing number and the arboricity of graphs in terms of effective resistances. As applications, we show that equiarboreal graphs are uniformly dense, and determine the maximum number of edge-disjoint spanning c-forests of equiarboreal graphs, including edge-transitive graphs, 1-walk-regular graphs, distance-regular graphs and so on. The arboricity of a regular graph can be derived from our effective resistance bounds directly.

Abstract:The number of non-empty subtrees of a connected graph G, denoted by N ( G ), has been an interesting topic of research for many years. Considered as a counting based topological index, it appears to have correlations with many other well studied graph indices. Many results on various extremal trees with respect to the number of subtrees have been established over the years. But relatively few are available on more general graphs. In this paper we consider the maximum and minimum values of N ( G ) among connected graphs of a given order n and k ≥ 0 cut edges. Sharp upper bounds are presented with the corresponding extremal structures for each k ≥ 0, and sharp lower bounds are presented with the corresponding extremal structures for 0 ≤ k < n − 1 2.

Abstract:The number of spanning trees is an important graph invariant related to different topological and dynamic properties of the graph, such as its reliability, synchronization capability and diffusion properties. In 2007, Chang et al. proposed two conjectures on the number of spanning trees of Sierpi nski triangle graphs and its spanning tree entropy. In this paper, we completely confirm these conjectures. For data center networks D k,n , we get the exact formula for k = 1, and upper and lower bounds for k >= 2. Our results allow also the calculation of the spanning tree entropy of Sierpi nski graphs and data center networks. (c) 2024 Elsevier Inc. Abstract:Graph entropies have been introduced to quantitatively measure the structural information content of graphs and networks; they have plenty of applications in various fields. Utilizing the number of subgraphs to establish measures for determining the complexity of molecular graphs are also prevalent in the study of mathematical chemistry. In this paper, we develop a new graph entropy measure that is based on the number of spanning forests. We prove explicit expressions for the entropy for trees, unicyclic and bicyclic graphs, and show that the cycle graph Cn attains the maximal value of the entropy for unicyclic graphs with order n and large cycle lengths. Based on generating numerical results, we conjecture extremal unicyclic graphs with respect to the entropy as well as we compare the values of our entropy for c-cyclic graphs, and generate graphs of bicyclic graphs and tricyclic graphs with 6 vertices for performing further research.
Counting the Number of Spanning Trees of Generalization Farey Graph

Abstract:Spanning trees are an important quantity characterizing the reliability of a network, however, explicitly determining the number of spanning trees in networks is a theoretical challenge. In this paper, we perform a study on the enumeration of spanning trees in a specific small-world network with an exponential distribution of vertex degrees, which is called generalization Farey graph since it is associated with the famous Farey sequence. According to the particular network structure, use the method, proposed by us, we obtain the exact number of spanning trees in the Farey graph. The result shows that the computation complexity is O(n), which is better than that of the matrix tree theorem with O(n2), where n is the number of steps. We derive a basic property of generalization Farey graph controlled by a parameter k, which is closely to the number of spanning trees of network, which become bigger with increasing k. We also obtain the maximum and minimum numbers of spanning trees of these kinds of networks through the method.

Abstract:The spanning tree packing number of a graph G $G$, denoted by tau(G) $\tau (G)$, is the maximum number of edge-disjoint spanning trees contained in G $G$. The study of tau(G) $\tau (G)$ is one of the classic problems in graph theory. Cioaba and Wong initiated to investigate tau(G) $\tau (G)$ from spectral perspectives in 2012 and since then, tau(G) $\tau (G)$ has been well studied using the second-largest eigenvalue of the adjacency matrix in the past decade. In this paper, we further extend the results in terms of the number of edges and the spectral radius, respectively; and prove tight sufficient conditions to guarantee tau(G)>= k $\tau (G)\ge k$ with extremal graphs characterized. Moreover, we confirm a conjecture of Ning, Lu, and Wang on characterizing graphs with the maximum spectral radius among all graphs with a given order as well as fixed minimum degree and fixed edge connectivity. Our results have important applications in rigidity and nowhere-zero flows. We conclude with some open problems in the end.

Abstract:The problem of counting the number of spanning trees is an old topic in graph theory with important applications to reliable network design. Usually, it is desirable to put forward a formula of the number of spanning trees for various graphs, which is not only interesting in its own right but also in practice. Since some large graphs can be composed of some existing smaller graphs by using the product of graphs, the number of spanning trees of such large graph is also closely related to that of the corresponding smaller ones. In this article, we establish a formula for the number of spanning trees in the lexicographic product of two graphs, in which one graph is an arbitrary graph G and the other is a complete multipartite graph. The results extend some of the previous work, which is closely related to the number of vertices and Lapalacian eigenvalues of smaller graphs only.

Abstract:In 1998, H. Broersma and H. Tuinstra proved that: Given a connected graph $G$ with $n\geq 3$ vertices, if $d(u)+d(v)\geq n-k+1$ for all non-adjacent vertices $u$ and $v$ of $G$ ($k\geq 1$), then $G$ has a spanning tree with at most $k$ leaves. In this paper, we generalize this result by using implicit degree sum condition of $t$ ($2\leq t\leq k$) independent vertices and we prove what follows: Let $G$ be a connected graph on $n\geq 3$ vertices and $k\geq 2$ be an integer. If the implicit degree sum of any $t$ independent vertices is at least $\frac{t(n-k)}{2}+1$ for ($k\geq t\geq 2$), then $G$ has a spanning tree with at most $k$ leaves.

Abstract:The number of spanning trees of a graph is an important invariant related to topological and dynamic properties of the graph, such as its reliability, communication aspects, synchronization, and so on. However, the practical enumeration of spanning trees and the study of their properties remain a challenge, particularly for large networks. In this paper, we study the num- ber and degree distribution of the spanning trees in the Hanoi graph. We first establish recursion relations between the number of spanning trees and other spanning subgraphs of the Hanoi graph, from which we find an exact analytical expression for the number of spanning trees of the n-disc Hanoi graph. This result allows the calculation of the spanning tree entropy which is then compared with those for other graphs with the same average degree. Then, we introduce a vertex labeling which allows to find, for each vertex of the graph, its degree distribution among all possible spanning trees.

Abstract:Let G be a connected graph and let be an integer. Let T be a spanning tree of G . The leaf degree of a vertex is defined as the number of leaves adjacent to v in T . The leaf degree of T is the maximum leaf degree among all the vertices of T . Let | E ( G )| and denote the size and the spectral radius of G , respectively. In this paper, we first create a lower bound on the size of G to ensure that G admits a spanning tree with leaf degree at most k . Then we establish a lower bound on the spectral radius of G to guarantee that G contains a spanning tree with leaf degree at most k . Finally, we create some extremal graphs to show all the bounds obtained in this paper are sharp.

Abstract:In this paper we give an exact analytical expression for the number of spanning trees of an infinite family of outerplanar, small-world and self-similar graphs. This number is an important graph invariant related to different topological and dynamic properties of the graph, such as its reliability, synchronization capability and diffusion properties. The calculation of the number of spanning trees is a demanding and difficult task, in particular for large graphs, and thus there is much interest in obtaining closed expressions for relevant infinite graph families. We have also calculated the spanning tree entropy of the graphs which we have compared with those for graphs with the same average degree.

Abstract:In this paper, we study some spanning trees with bounded degree and leaf degree from eigenvalues. For any integer $k\geq2$, a $k$-tree is a spanning tree in which every vertex has degree no more than $k$. Let $T$ be a spanning tree of a connected graph. The leaf degree of $T$ is the maximum number of end-vertices attached to $v$ in $T$ for any $v\in V(T)$. By referring to the technique shown in [Eigenvalues and $[a,b]$-factors in regular graphs, J. Graph Theory. 100 (2022) 458-469], for an $r$-regular graph $G$, we provide an upper bound for the fourth largest adjacency eigenvalue of $G$ to guarantee the existence of a $k$-tree. Moreover, for a $t$-connected graph, we prove a tight sufficient condition for the existence of a spanning tree with leaf degree at most $k$ in terms of spectral radius. This generalizes a result of Theorem 1.5 in [Spectral radius and spanning trees of graphs, Discrete Math. 346 (2023) 113400]. Finally, for a general graph $G$, we present two sufficient conditions for the existence of a spanning tree with leaf degree at most $k$ via the Laplacian eigenvalues of $G$ and the spectral radius of the complement of $G$, respectively.

Abstract:Recently, Cioabǎ and Gu obtained a relationship between the spectrum of a regular graph and the existence of spanning trees of bounded degree, generalized connectivity and toughness, respectively. In this paper, motivated by the idea of Cioabǎ and Gu, we determine a connection between the (signless Laplacian and Laplacian) eigenvalues of a graph and its structural properties involving the existence of spanning trees with bounded degrees and generalized connectivity, respectively. We also present a connection between the (signless Laplacian and Laplacian) eigenvalues and toughness of a bipartite graph, respectively. Finally, we obtain a lower bound of toughness in a graph in terms of edge connectivity $$\kappa '$$ and maximum degree $$\varDelta $$ .

Abstract:Let $G$ be a connected graph and $L(G)$ the set of all integers $k$ such that $G$ contains a spanning tree with exactly $k$ leaves. We show that for a connected graph $G$, the set $L(G)$ is contiguous. It follows from work of Chen, Ren, and Shan that every connected and locally connected $n$-vertex graph -- this includes triangulations -- has a spanning tree with at least $n/2 + 1$ leaves, so by a classic theorem of Whitney and our result, in any plane $4$-connected $n$-vertex triangulation one can find for any integer $k$ which is at least $2$ and at most $n/2 + 1$ a spanning tree with exactly $k$ leaves (and each of these trees can be constructed in polynomial time). We also prove that there exist infinitely many $n$ such that there is a plane $4$-connected $n$-vertex triangulation containing a spanning tree with $2n/3$ leaves, but no spanning tree with more than $2n/3$ leaves.
