Abstract:The "industry nurturing agriculture" reforms and World Trade Organization accession led to dramatic growth in public expenditure and international trade in China's agricultural sector. This article aims to estimate the effects of public expenditure and trade on agricultural productivity in China for 2004-2015. A semi-parametric production function with shape constraints is introduced to derive more accurate productivity before the productivity determinants are analyzed with an emphasis on public expenditure and trade. The empirical result shows that public expenditure and exports can effectively improve agricultural productivity, while imports have no significant effects. Policy implications are discussed in the context of supply-side reforms.

Abstract:This article analyzes the operation of modern China's nationwide traditional financial network. The network was hierarchical, with Shanghai as the center. Coexisting with the center, however, were several distinct regionally oriented subsystems in the Lower Yangzi Valley, North China, Central China, and South China. Each subsystem had its own financial center, which was the center for many regional, or lower level, markets. Each of these regional financial centers was surrounded by many even smaller subcenters, which extended level by level down to the bottom of the entire financial system: the local township markets. In this way, all Chinese rural households were incorporated into the financial network through local markets. Therefore, the flow of currency between the financial centers and subcenters was the true link between the central markets and local markets, and the trade in agricultural products created the real tie that connected rural households with various markets.

Abstract:How were financing problems solved when modern China was transforming from a traditional society into an industrializing one? Modern China lacked the experience of primitive accumulation of capital.Moreover,there were limited subsidies from the government for privately funded enterprises which were most vibrant and existent in great numbers.Against this background,we can see that the great needs for capital in the process of industrialization have been met with private financial institutions,traditional ways and practices of financing,and financing methods adopted by modern private enterprises after the emergence of machinery industries.Here is an analysis of financing through private financial institutions,direct collection of savings by enterprises,and various expanding ways within enterprises to increase capital accumulation internally,thus presenting a series of historical pictures about active private finance in modern China.
On the Evolution of Economic Relations Between City and Country in Modern China

Abstract:Before the modern Chinese society, in a relatively closed natural economy, city and rural social economy had no qualitative differences. After the Opium War, the situation was broken and a considerable part of the rural economy had been a series of profound changes by the direct or indirect radiation of the treaty port city economy. These changes had also supported and promoted the city economic transformation in modern China. This two-way interaction was in accordance with the requirements of the forward development of Chinese society, at the same time, the social environment at that time obviously restricted the relationship between geographical range and actual effect.

Abstract:Using a survey of 352 agricultural firms in China,this paper attempts to examine:(1) the determinants of agricultural firm’s usage of financial derivatives to hedge exchange rate risk,and(2) the impact of derivatives on export performance.We find that 32.4 percent of sample firms managed exchange risk by means of financial derivatives.Empirical results indicate that firm size,risk preference,number of exports markets,ratio of foreign sales,and knowledge about derivatives have a significantly positive influence on usage of derivatives,while debt-to-assets ratio and sunk cost is positively related to usage as well.On the other hand,R&D expenditure is significantly negative related to usage.In addition,it is found that usage of derivatives had a significant impact on export revenue among users,and users would get greater benefits from financial derivatives than non-users.

Abstract:Objective/Context: This article surveys the evolution of commercial finance in Ming-Qing China and responds to the debates about the role of finance in the "Great Divergence" between China and Europe. Methodology: Based on new historical materials, especially commercial documents, we study the evolution of financial organizations at different levels as delineated by Fernand Braudel. We also analyze the long-run trends of commercial interest rates in the Ming-Qing eras based on a novel historical database of interest rates in China. Originality: This article explores capital market developments since the 16th century and their relationship with the state -a topic that has been almost entirely neglected in the existing literature. We also find improvements in market integration in China before the late 19th century when Western financial institutions began to enter China, and the prime commercial interest rate in the capital market was much lower than the dominant accounts in the "Great Divergence" debate. Conclusions: While current comparative studies either emphasize the financial stagnation of Ming-Qing China relative to the West or emphasize its special development through non-market mechanisms, e.g., clans, this article shows that the capital market played a similar key role in the evolution of finance in Ming-Qing China as it did in advanced parts of Europe. Thus, we suggest that the difference in financial development between China and the West lies in the organizational structure of the financial sector and the relationship between finance and the state.

Abstract:The author traces the policy vicissitude of foreign trade of agricultural products in China before and after WTO entry. The exterior environment for foreign trade of agricultural products in China is interpreted in terms of Hub and Spoke: various high subsidy policies supporting agriculture continue to be used by developed countries; various trade barrier measures supporting agriculture are adopted by them. Interior conditions for foreign trade of agricultural products in China are interpreted in terms of adverse selection: the phenomenon that agricultural products are in vicious competition of low prices is increasingly obvious; there exist limitations of a safeguard system of quality and safety for agricultural products. The international organizations which unscramble and elude government behaviors of unfair trade,and their detailed functions include: WTO and its fair competition principles,WTO decision-making mechanism and its justice; Fairtrade Labeling Organizations International (FLO) and its major mission,fairtrade labeling and its applicability towards agricultural products,and potential benefit of fair trade labeling and its obtaining qualifications.

Apart from its core roles in price discovery and risk management for agricultural products, this market acts as a catalyst for efficient allocation of resources and continuous financial innovation. Furthermore, it enhances market liquidity and amplifies China's global economic impact. As China's financial sector matures, the agricultural futures market will continue its dual role of bolstering agricultural prosperity and financial dynamism, despite encountering various challenges. This study explores the present state of China's agricultural futures market, evaluating metrics such as total market turnover and penetration. Analysis identifies several critical issues, including inadequate liquidity, susceptibility to market manipulation, speculative activities, and uncertain economic policies. To address these challenges, the paper proposes targeted strategies. The research outcomes carry significant implications for nurturing the sustainable and resilient growth of China's agricultural futures market.

Abstract:Different from past studies taking information economics as the main theoretical basis,this paper reexamines economic performance of rural formal financial development in China from a new perspective of dual economic transformation.Based on Fei-Ranis model of dual transformation growth,it constructs a general equilibrium model of urban and rural economic interaction based on financial markets of industrial and agricultural sectors.Then it makes a normative analysis of the relation ship between rural finance and dual economic transformation and proposes a hypothesis.This paper employs a SVA model in consideration of the theoretical hypothesis and the long-term interaction among variables to verify the theoretical analysis abovementioned.The empirical results show that,after the control of other factors,the development of financial markets between industrial and agricultural sectors based on the mechanism of natural market evolution is contributive to dual transformation growth.

Abstract:The deep integration of the agricultural digital economy and foreign trade is an important driving force for promoting high–quality economic development. Based on a theoretical analysis of the impact mechanisms of the agricultural digital economy on agricultural exports, this study empirically examines the impact and mechanism of the agricultural digital economy on agricultural exports using Chinese agricultural export data from 2011 to 2016. The relevant findings are threefold. (1) The agricultural digital economy significantly enhances the growth of China's agricultural exports, and the result remains robust after a series of robustness tests. (2) The heterogeneity analysis reveals that the agricultural digital economy has a greater role in promoting exports from quality frontier firms, primary agricultural products and exports to developed countries. (3) The mechanism analysis demonstrates that the agricultural digital economy promotes exports of agricultural products on the supply side most strongly through quality–enhancing and the information cost effects, improving product quality and reducing information expenditure to achieve export growth. On the demand side, domestic demand traction and external–demand creation effects exert a local market effect and stimulate import market demand to promote export growth. Abstract:Financial support, agriculture loan and insurance are the main funding modes for the development of agriculture. This study firstly uses software eviews6.0 to make an analysis of the current state of the Trade between Guangxi and CAFTA, and then makes a study of the data of the funds and the trading volume of Guangxi-ASEAN, and comes to the conclusion that the funds involved has an effect on the trade volume. Generally, government fiscal support curbs the trade while the agricultural loan and the agricultural insurance promote it; however, the case in Guangxi seems the opposite. The trade volume is promoted by government financial support while curbed by loan and insurance.

Abstract:Purpose The purpose of this paper is to extend empirical investigations of the relationship between real exchange rates and agricultural exports to the firm-product-country level with the use of disaggregated panel data of China's food industry. In particular, the study aims to explore heterogeneities in the export response to real exchange rates across firms, destinations and products, as well as to differentiate responses on the intensive and extensive margins. Design/methodology/approach This paper utilizes a merged panel data set of firm-product-country level transaction records of China's agricultural exports with firm-level survey data of the food industry. Panel regression models are constructed to identify empirical relationships. Findings Real appreciations are found to reduce export quantities and the probability to enter destination markets. These impacts are enhanced in 2005 when China unexpectedly depegged yuan from the USD. In addition, real appreciations in 2005 also reduced the yuan-denominated export price and increased firms' probability to exit destination markets. Taking the exchange rate reform as a natural experiment, evidence suggests that the negative exchange rate effects on exports are robust to the endogeneity issue. Finally, heterogeneous export responses are identified with respect to firm productivities and ownerships, income levels and locations of destination markets, as well as product groups. Originality/value This paper provides first-hand evidence on how real exchange rates influence agricultural exports at the firm-product-country level. A featured contribution is that China's exchange rate reform in 2005 is utilized to alleviate the typical concern of endogeneity. Findings may benefit policy makers, for example, by identifying firms most vulnerable to real appreciations.
How Rural Financial Innovation Promotes Agricultural Industrialization

Abstract:At present,rural economy and supporting measures of government on rural China have experienced great change. Industrialization may be a new way to boost rural income when farmer's income growth rate is decreasing in rural China. Due to lack in guarantee system in rural China and less hostage,financing is still difficulty so as to firms and farmers have to rely on dealer's support. This leads to high input cost and small operation scale. In this paper,we suggest a new rural financing model which combines agriculture company,farmer,bank,insurance company and financial guarantee company to enable farmers access capital easily. This model can reduce input cost and im-prove profit of firms and farmers. It presents the mechanism of this new financial innovation model and points out the potential problems and key successful factors of this model by analyzing the successful cases in Shangdong province.

Abstract:China's agricultural development has to follow the road of agricultural industrialization and agricultural industrialization depends on the development of agricultural enterprises. However, agricultural enterprises are hard to expand in present China due the existence of financial barriers. At the same time, the development of China's rural cooperative finance services are faced with great difficulty, with lack of demands as the key limiting factor. The authors of this paper hold that the combination of rural finance with agricultural enterprises is the best way to solve such problems. In this paper, the feasibility of participation of cooperative finance services in the development of agricultural enterprises is discussed, the main barriers for its realization are outlined and possible policies are proposed to accelerate the development of agricultural enterprises.

Abstract:We examined the impact of contractual arrangements on the relationship between physical and formal financing under a theoretical analytical framework of “contractual arrangement-prestige channel-financing structure,” based on the survey data of rice growers in Jiangsu Province, China. We found that physical and formal financing have different relationships. Specifically, though they present a strong substitutability under oral contractual arrangements, they may complement each other under formal contractual arrangements through the prestige channel. Therefore, the government is suggested to give farmers preferential options by encouraging or supporting physical financing, rather than replacing or weakening it with government-led financial support policies.

Abstract:By conscious design, reformers in China only gradually focused their efforts on expanding the role of markets for the allocation of goods and services in the economy. As a result, markets—especially in the agricultural sector—developed slowly. Throughout the 1990s there was a heated debate about the degree to which markets had emerged. The main goal in this paper is to bring together a number of simple and revealing facts on the emergence of China's markets. To do so we examine several sets of price data and analyze spatial patterns of market prices contours over time and text the extent to which market prices are integrated among China's regions. According to our analysis, we find that to a remarkable degree, agricultural commodity markets have emerged; price patterns look much like those in market economies in the rest of the world and prices are highly integrated across space.

Abstract:In October 2022, the Party's 20 National Congress report clearly proposed to promote rural revitalization in an all-round way. It will need to speed up digital transformation so that digital inclusive finance can serve the high-quality development of China's agriculture. Based on this, this paper uses the panel data of 31 provinces from 2011 to 2020 to investigate the impact of digital financial inclusion on the scale of agricultural trade. The results show that digital inclusive finance can promote the trade of agricultural products, and the level of economic development is a favorable factor to promote the trade of agricultural products, while foreign investment level, traditional financial level, government intervention level and urbanization level hinder the development of agricultural products trade to a certain extent. Accordingly, relevant policy suggestions are given. First, local government needs to combine the current development of agricultural products and vigorously develop digital inclusive finance. Second, use the financial advantage of digital inclusive finance to improve the scientific and technological content of agricultural products. Third, the government needs to control the degree of intervention in agricultural trade. Fourth, increase investment in new rural infrastructure to boost trade in agricultural products.
