Abstract:In this paper, we investigate dynamical mass generation in (2+1)-dimensional quantum electrodynamics at finite temperature. Many studies are carried out within the instantaneous-exchange approximation, which ignores all but the zero-frequency component of the boson propagator and fermion self-energy function. We extend these studies by taking the retardation effects into consideration. In this paper, we get the explicit frequency n and momentum p dependence of the fermion self-energy function and identify the critical temperature for different fermion flavors in the chiral limit. Also, the phase diagram for spontaneous symmetry breaking in the theory is presented in T-c-N-f space. The results show that the chiral condensate is just one-tenth of the scale of previous results, and the chiral symmetry is restored at a smaller critical temperature.

Abstract:We present a workable model for the fermion-photon vertex, which is expressed solely in terms of functions that appear in the fermion propagator and independent of the angle between the relative momenta, and does not explicitly depend on the covariant-gauge parameter. It nevertheless produces a critical coupling for dynamical chiral symmetry breaking that is practically independent of the covariant-gauge parameter and an anomalous magnetic moment distribution for the dressed fermion that agrees in important respects with realistic numerical solutions of the inhomogeneous vector Bethe-Salpeter equation.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the dynamical mass generation in the Abelian Higgs model in 2 + 1 dimensions. Instead of adopting the approximations in [Jiang H et al., J. Phys. A 41 2008 255402.], we numerically solve the coupled Dyson–Schwinger Equations (DSEs) for the fermion and gauge boson propagators using a specific truncation for the fermion-photon vertex ansatz and compare our results with the corresponding ones in the above mentioned paper. It is found that the results quoted in the above paper remain qualitatively unaffected by refining the truncation scheme of the DSEs, although there exist large quantitative differences between the results presented in the above paper and ours. In addition, our numerical results show that the critical number of fermion flavor Nc decreases steeply with the the gauge boson mass ma (or the ratio of the Higgs mass mh to the gauge boson mass ma, r = mh/ma) increasing. It is thus easier to generate a finite fermion mass by the mechanism of DCSB for a small ratio r for a given ma.

Abstract:Dynamical chiral symmetry breaking is a nonperturbative phenomenon that may be studied using QCD's gap equation. Model-independent results can be obtained with a nonperturbative and symmetry preserving truncation. The gap equation yields the massive dressed-quark propagator, which has a spectral representation when considered as a function of the current-quark mass. This enables an explication of the connection between the infrared limit of the QCD Dirac operator's spectrum and the quark condensate appearing in the operator product expansion.

Abstract:In the context of 2+1 dimensional Dirac materials, we consider electromagnetic interactions alongside a type of spin-dependent Hubbard interaction. The former is described by PQED theory, while the latter corresponds to an effective theory represented by the $SU(N_c)$ Thirring model. Employing Hubbard-Stratonovich transformation and large N expansion in the model yields a non-local $SU(N_c)$ Yang-Mills action. Subsequently, we solve Schwinger-Dyson equations to obtain the self-energy function of the fermion propagator, from which we determine the critical fermion flavor number $N^c_f$ and critical fine structure constant $\alpha_c$ indicative of chiral symmetry breaking. Our findings suggest that as the non-Abelian color number $N_c$ increases, the minimum value of the critical fermion flavor number monotonically increases, while the maximum value of the critical fine structure constant decreases accordingly, rendering the system more susceptible to chiral symmetry breaking.

Abstract:In terms of an effective chiral theory of mesons it is shown quantitatively that in the limit of $m_{q}=0$, the masses of $\rho$, $\omega$, $K^{*}(892)$, $m_{\phi}$, $a_{1}$, $f_{1}(1286)$, $K_{1}(1400)$, and $f_{1}(1510)$ mesons originate from dynamical chiral symmetry breaking.

Abstract:Dynamical chiral symmetry breaking (DCSB) in thermal QED3 with fermion velocity is studied in the framework of Dyson-Schwinger equations. By adopting instantaneous approximation and neglecting the transverse component of gauge boson propagator at finite temperature, we numerically solve the fermion self-energy equation in the rainbow approximation. It is found that both DCSB and fermion chiral condensate are suppressed by fermion velocity. Moreover, the critical temperature decreases as fermion velocity increases.

Abstract:The Eigenstate Method has been developed to deduce the fermion propagator with a constant external magnetic field. In general, we find its result is equivalent to other methods and this new method is more convenient, especially when one evaluates the contribution from the infinitesimal imaginary term of the fermion propagator. Using the Eigenstate Method we try to discuss whether the infinitesimal imaginary frequency of the fermion propagator in a strong magnetic field and Lorentz-violating extension of the minimal SU(3)×SU(2)×SU(1) Standard Model could have a significant influence on the dynamical mass. When the imaginary term of the fermion propagator in this model is not trivial , this model gives a correction to the dynamical mass. When one does not consider the influence from the imaginary term , there is another correction from the conventional term. Under both circumstances, chiral symmetry is broken.

Abstract:Symmetry-breaking phases of many-fermion systems are characterized by anomalous functions representing transient processes during which some characteristics of free particles, such as spin or charge, are not conserved. Matching the low-temperature symmetry-breaking phase with the high-temperature one consistently with nontrivial quantum dynamics is a long-standing, unresolved problem. We argue that the two-particle propagators may contain only even powers of the anomalous Green functions to make the thermodynamic system conserving. Only then can we continuously match the symmetry-breaking phase with the normal one at the transition point. We use the antiferromagnetic phase of a dynamical approximation to disclose universal features of the impact of quantum dynamics on thermodynamic and spectral properties of the ordered state.

Symmetry Breaking from Monopole Condensation in QED$_3$

Abstract:QED in three dimensions with an $SU(2)_f$ doublet $\psi^i$ of massless, charge-1 Dirac fermions (and no Chern-Simons term) has a $U(2) = (SU(2)_f \times U(1)_m)/\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry that acts on gauge-invariant local operators, including monopole operators charged under $U(1)_m$. We establish that there are only two possible IR scenarios: either the theory flows to a CFT with $U(2)$ symmetry (a scenario strongly constrained by conformal bootstrap bounds); or it spontaneously breaks $U(2) \to U(1)$ via the condensation of a monopole operator of smallest $U(1)_m$ charge, which is a $U(2)$ doublet. This leads to three Nambu-Goldstone bosons described by a sigma model into a squashed three-sphere $S^3$ with $U(2)$ isometry. We further show that the conventional $SU(2)_f$-triplet order parameter $i \bar \psi \vec \sigma \, \psi$ also gets a vev, exactly aligned with the monopole vev, such that the triplet parametrizes the $\mathbb{CP}^1$ base of the $S^3$ Hopf bundle, with the monopoles providing the $S^1$ fibers. We also recall why this scenario is compatible with the Vafa-Witten theorem. We obtain these results by analyzing the phase diagram as a function of the fermion triplet mass $\vec m$: we show that for all $\vec m \neq 0$ there is a Coulomb phase with only a weakly-coupled photon at low energies, arising from a monopole vev that is aligned with $\vec m$ via the Hopf map. We then argue that taking $\vec m \to 0$ leads to the symmetry-breaking scenario above. Throughout, we give a detailed account of anomaly matching, which leads to a $\theta=\pi$ term in the $S^3$ sigma model. In one presentation, it can be understood as a Hopf term in a suitably gauged version of the $\mathbb{CP}^1$ sigma model.

Abstract:The fermion four-point functions and condensates as the chiral symmetry order parameters are calculated analytically in U(1) gauge theory in the massless phase. It is shown that in leading order of the loop expansion of the effective action, there is a critical coupling for the nonperturbative parity-invariant chirality-changing four-fermion functions; this critical coupling however is the same as that for dynamical mass generation. Therefore there is no breaking of chiral symmetry through the condensation of four-fermion functions below the critical coupling for dynamical mass generation for the fermions.

Abstract:Physics is an experimental science; and a constructive feedback between theory and extant and forthcoming experiments is necessary if an understanding of nonperturbative QCD is to be achieved. The Dyson-Schwinger equations connect confinement with dynamical chiral symmetry breaking, both with the observable properties of hadrons, and hence can plausibly provide a means of elucidating the empirical content of strong QCD. We illustrate these points via comments on: in-hadron condensates; dressed-quark anomalous chromo- and electro-magnetic moments; the self-limiting magnitudes of such moments and pion-loop contributions to the gap equation; deep inelastic scattering; the spectra of mesons and baryons; the critical role played by hadron-hadron interactions in producing these spectra; and nucleon elastic and transition form factors.

Abstract:In this work, we investigate how the details of the quark-gluon interaction vertex affect the quantitative description of chiral symmetry breaking through the gap equation for quarks. We start from two gluon propagator models widely used in literature and constructed in direct connection with our gradually improved understanding of infrared quantum chromodynamics coupled with its exact one-loop limit. The gap equation is then solved by employing a variety of vertex \emph{Ansätze}, which have been constructed in order to implement some of the key aspects of quantum chromodynamics, namely, multiplicative renormalizability of the quark propagator, gauge invariance, matching with perturbation theory in the weak coupling regime, independence from unphysical kinematic singularities as well as manifestly correct transformation properties under charge conjugation and parity operations. On general grounds, all truncation schemes exhibit the same qualitative and quantitative pattern of chiral symmetry breaking, ensuring the overall robustness of this approach and its potentially reliable description of the hadron spectrum and properties.

Fermion Mass Generation without Symmetry Breaking

Abstract:We study the generation of fermion mass in a context where interactions break a discrete chiral symmetry. Then, fermion mass is not protected by a symmetry, no symmetry is broken by the generation of mass, and a vanishing mass no longer enhances a symmetry. We elaborate these scenarios for template fermionic and Yukawa theories in three dimensions where mass can be generated either by fluctuations, strong dynamics, or the vacuum expectation value of a scalar field. We find that fluctuation-induced contributions to fermion mass are parametrically suppressed in the number of fermion flavours $N$. The generation of fermion mass then takes the form of a rapid crossover which turns into a second order quantum phase transition for large $N$, much like in settings with fundamental chiral symmetry. We further discuss theories where fermion mass can be generated spontaneously without breaking any symmetry other than scale symmetry. Implications of our findings are discussed.

Abstract:On a bounded, measurable domain of non-negative current-quark mass, realistic models of the QCD gap equation can simultaneously admit two nonequivalent dynamical chiral symmetry breaking (DCSB) solutions and a solution that is unambiguously connected with the realization of chiral symmetry in the Wigner mode. The Wigner solution and one of the DCSB solutions are destabilized by a current-quark mass, and both disappear when that mass exceeds a critical value. This critical value also bounds the domain on which the surviving DCSB solution possesses a chiral expansion. This value can therefore be viewed as an upper bound on the domain within which a perturbative expansion in the current-quark mass around the chiral limit is uniformly valid for physical quantities. For a pseudoscalar meson constituted of equal-mass current quarks, it corresponds to a mass ${m}_{{0}^{\ensuremath{-}}}~0.45$ GeV. In our discussion, we employ properties of the two DCSB solutions of the gap equation that enable a valid definition of $\ensuremath{\langle}\overline{q}q\ensuremath{\rangle}$ in the presence of a nonzero current mass. The behavior of this condensate indicates that the essentially dynamical component of chiral symmetry breaking decreases with increasing current-quark mass.

Abstract:We propose a (4+1) dimensional Chern-Simons field theoretical description of the fractional quantum Hall effect. It suggests that composite fermions reside on a momentum manifold with a nonzero Chern number. Based on derivations from microscopic wave functions, we further show that the momentum manifold has a uniformly distributed Berry curvature. As a result, composite fermions do not follow the ordinary Newtonian dynamics as commonly believed, but the more general symplectic one. For a Landau level with the particle-hole symmetry, the theory correctly predicts its Hall conductance at half-filling as well as the symmetry between an electron filling fraction and its hole counterpart.

Abstract:We study chiral-symmetry breaking in a model of quantum chromodynamics (QCD). In our study we make a critical analysis of an approximation that is often used in QCD and other theories to simplify the Schwinger-Dyson equation for the fermion self-energy. Solving the Schwinger-Dyson equation numerically, without employing the approximation, we find that chiral symmetry is restored when the running coupling constant at zero momentum transfer falls below 0.890.
