Survival Analysis of Cancer Patients in Pudong New Area of Shanghai, 2004

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: To analyze the survival rates of cancer patients in 2004 in Pudong new area and provide data for cancer prevention project.METHODS: Subsets of 8 907 cancer patients diagnosed in 2004 in Pudong new area were selected by the Cancer Reporting System in Shanghai.The observed survival rates for different groups of gender,age,geographical distribution and TNM stages were calculated and tested by Life Table and log-rank test.Relative survival rate was calculated using Ederer Ⅱ method.RESULTS: The incidence rate of cancers in Pudong new area in 2004 was 35.75 per million.The observed survival rate of the cancer cases at one to five years was 45.30%,39.74%,36.62%,34.14% and 32.41%,and the relative survival rate(RSR) was 48.44%,44.08%,42.78%,42.51% and 41.64%,respectively.The cancers with a 5-year RSR of more than 40% were colorectal,breast,thyroid,brain and central nervous system and bladder cancers,and the cancers with a 5-year RSR of less than 10% were liver and pancreas cancers.The difference showed statistical significance(χ2 values were 352.298,1 472.077,33.913 and 1 052.113,P0.01) among the different groups' overall survival in gender,age,district and TNM stages respectively.The RSR of 1-,3-and 5-year were decreased with the increased age of incidence(t values were-51.450,-56.551 and-73.479,P0.01).CONCLUSIONS: The survival rate is low for some cancer patients in Pudong new area.The factors affecting the cancer survival are tumor types,gender,age,geographical location and TNM stages of the cancer patients.
