Abstract:We describe the S 1 -action on the Quot-scheme Quot(E n ) associated to the trivial bundle E n = CP 1 × C n . In particlular, the topology of the S 1 -fixed-point components in Quot(E n ) and the S 1 -weights of the normal bundle of these components are worked out. Mirror Principle, as developed by three of the current authors in the series of work [L-L-Y1, I, II, III, IV], is a method for studying certain intersection numbers on a stable map moduli space. As an application, in Mirror Principle III, Sec 5.4, an outline was given in the case of genus zero with target a flag manifold. The results on S 1 fixed points in this paper are used here to do explicit Mirror Principle computations in the case of Grassmannian manifolds. In fact, Mirror Principle computations involve only a certain distinguished subcollection of the S 1 -fixed-point components. These components are identified and are labelled by Young tableaus. The S 1 -equivariant Euler class eS1 of the normal bundle to these components is computed. A diagrammatic rule that allows one to write down eS1 directly from the Young tableau is given. From this, the aforementioned intersection numbers on the moduli space of stable maps can be worked out. Two examples are given to illustrate our method. Using our method, the A-model for Calabi-Yau complete intersections in a Grassmannian manifold can now also be computed explicitly. This work is motivated by the intention to provide further details of mirror principle and to understand the relation of mirror principle to physical theory. Some related questions are listed for further study.

Abstract:G. Navarro raised the question whether the ordinary character table X(G) of a finite group G determines the Sylow numbers of G. In this note we show that this is the case when G is nilpotent-by-nilpotent, quasinilpotent, Frobenius group or a 2-Frobenius group. In particular Sylow numbers of supersoluble groups are determined by their ordinary character table. If G and H are finite groups with isomorphic integral group rings then it is well known that X(G) and X(H) coincide. In the last part of this note we show that the integral group ring ZG determines the number of Sylow q-subgroups provided G is q-contrained. It follows that ZG determines the Sylow numbers of G provided G is soluble.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove the following theorem: Let p be a prime number, P a Sylow p-subgroup of a group G and π = π(G) \ {p}. If P is seminormal in G, then the following statements hold: 1) G is a p-soluble group and P′ ≤ O p (G); 2) l p (G) ≤ 2 and l π (G) ≤ 2; 3) if a π-Hall subgroup of G is q-supersoluble for some q ∈ π, then G is q-supersoluble.

Abstract:We introduce Sylow subgroups and $0$-groups to the theory of complex algebraic supergroups, which mimic Sylow subgroups and $p$-groups in the theory of finite groups. We prove that Sylow subgroups are always $0$-groups, and show that they are unique up to conjugacy. Further, we give an explicit classification of $0$-groups which will be very useful for future applications. Finally, we prove an analogue of Sylow's third theorem on the number of Sylow subgroups of a supergroup.

Abstract:One of the central tools in the classification of simple algebraic groups is the distinction between semisimple subgroups and unipotent subgroups. It is not a priori clear how to make this distinction for torsion-free subgroups of a group of finite Morley rank. We exploit the ``graded'' notion of 0-unipotence to develop a Sylow theory for torsion-free subgroups of a solvable group of finite Morley rank. This Sylow theory provides a robust alternative to the usual theory of Carter subgroups, and will be used in the analysis of intersections of Borel subgroups in minimal simple groups.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a finite simple group of Lie type and let $P$ be a Sylow $2$-subgroup of $G$. In this paper, we prove that for any nontrivial element $x \in G$, there exists $g \in G$ such that $G = \langle P, x^g \rangle$. By combining this result with recent work of Breuer and Guralnick, we deduce that if $G$ is a finite nonabelian simple group and $r$ is any prime divisor of $|G|$, then $G$ is generated by a Sylow $2$-subgroup and a Sylow $r$-subgroup.
