Abstract:In this paper, the analytical model coupling the convective boundary layer (CBL) with the free atmosphere developed by Qi and Fu (1992) is improved. And by this improved model, the interaction between airflow over a mountain and the CBL is further discussed. The conclusions demonstrate: (1) The perturbation potential temperatures in the free atmosphere can counteract the effect of orographic thermal forcing through entraining and mixing in the CBL. Ifū M >ū F , the feedback of the perturbation potential temperatures in the free atmosphere is more important than orographic thermal forcing, which promotes the effect of interfacial waves. Ifū M <ū F , orographic thermal forcing is more important, which makes the interfacial height and the topographic height identical in phase, and the horizontal speeds are a maximum at the top of the mountain. (2) The internal gravity waves propagating vertically in the free atmosphere cause a strong downslope wind to become established above the lee slope in the CBL and result in the hydraulic jump at the top of the CBL. (3) With the CBL deepening, the interfacial gravity waves induced by the potential temperature jump at the top of the CBL cause the airflow in the CBL to be subcritical.

Abstract:Under the conditions of hydrostatic,geostrophic balance,and uniform west wind,the stratified flow over a three-dimensional(3D) elliptical mountain is simulated by a storm-scale numerical model(ARPS).In this paper a series numerical experiments were conducted to study the impacts of the mountain Fr number and the upstream flow orientation on the flow over three-dimensional mountain and the downstream boundary layer structure.The flow over 3D mountain is characterized by a string of phenomena,such as upstream block,downstream acceleration and gravity wave breaking and so on.Owning to the effect of Coriolis,these characters all become to be asymmetric.When the Fr number(mountain height) is increasing,the stronger upstream block,downstream jets and more asymmetric flow pattern over mountain are produced,especially the south orographic jet benefits more from the Fr number increase.In the dry flow over mountain,the boundary layer TKE is dominated by the low-level vertical wind shear of mountain flow.

Abstract:The role of the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) in the atmosphere-climate system is the exchange of heat, mass, and momentum between “the earth's surface” and the atmosphere. Traditionally, it is understood that turbulent transport is responsible for this exchange and hence the understanding and physical description of the turbulence structure of the boundary layer is key to assess the effectiveness of earth-atmosphere exchange (EAE). This understanding is rooted in the (implicit) assumption of a scale separation or spectral gap between turbulence and mean atmospheric motions, which in turn leads to the assumption of a horizontally homogeneous and flat (HHF) surface as a reference, for which both physical understanding and model parameterizations have successfully been developed over the years. Over mountainous terrain, however, the ABL is generically inhomogeneous due to both thermal (radiative) and dynamic forcing. This inhomogeneity leads to meso-scale and even sub-meso-scale flows such as slope and valley winds or wake effects. It is argued here that these (sub)meso-scale motions can significantly contribute to the vertical structure of the boundary layer and hence vertical exchange of heat and mass between the surface and the atmosphere. If model grid resolution is not high enough the latter will have to be parameterized (in a similar fashion as gravity wave drag (GWD) parameterizations take into account the momentum transport due to gravity waves in large-scale models). In this contribution we summarize the available evidence of the contribution of (sub)meso-scale motions to vertical exchange in mountainous terrain from observational and numerical modeling studies. In particular, a number of recent simulation studies using idealized topography will be summarized and put into perspective—so as to identify possible limitations and areas of necessary future research.

Abstract:Based on the basic principles of the micrometeorology of atmospheric boundary layers and vegetation canopy, a numerical model of the interaction between forest ecosystems and atmospheric boundary layers was developed. The model is used to simulate the diurnal variations of heat balance in forest ecosystems, canopy temperatures, ground surface temperatures, as well as the profiles of temporal and spatial distributions of potential temperatures, wind speeds, specific humidity, and turbulence exchange coefficients. Our study indicates that the model can be applied to study the interaction between land surface processes and atmospheric boundary layers over various underlying surfaces and their regional climate effects. This paper will establish a solid foundation to investigations on the coupling of climate models and the biosphere.
Numerical Modeling of Atmospheric Flow and Dispersion Around a Mountain

Abstract:A series of numerical experiments had been conducted to investigate the flow patterns and dispersion characteristics around a mountain under stably stratified flow. The two-dimensional model equations, based on the time-dependent Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equations, were solved numerically using an implicit time integration in body-fitted grid arrangement. The behavior of the flow is clarified to ascertain the effects of changes in the stratification, which is characterized by the Froude number F = U/NH (Where U is speed of the approaching wind, N is the Brunt-Vaisala frequency, and H is the mountain height). The numerical results suggest that the flow structure is independent of stratification when F＞4.0. The model predicts lee wave generation as the Froude number is decreased from 4 to 1, then flow splitting, wave breaking phenomena happen as F is further decreased to less than 1.0. Further, the model-predicted concentration fields when the contaminant is coming with the approaching wind show that the stratification of atmospheric flow has significant effects on the dispersion pattern.

Abstract:A transfer model is established,which can be used to study the interaction between the land surface physical processes of inhomogeneous region and the structure of atmosphere boundary-layer over urban and rural terrains.The model has simulated surface heat flux,surface temperature,temperature profiles,height of mixture layer and so on.And the differences between urban area,suburban area and rural area have been compared.This model mainly depends on the parameters below:surface albedo,surface roughness coefficient,moisture available coefficient of soil,thermal capacity and thermal diffusion coefficient of terrain,cloudage.The result shows that this model can simulate the structure and eigenvalues of atmosphere boundary layer and their changes in a day.Parameters used in this model aim at Beijing City,and the time is at the beginning of September.To other cities,or other time,the parameters should be adjusted accordingly.In addition,being adjusted,the model can also be used for other homogeneous and inhomogeneous terrains.

Abstract:The accurate prediction of the flow field characteristics of complex mountains is of great practical significance for the development and construction of wind farms, but it is not yet fully understood. The main purpose of this study is to propose a method for the study of flow field characteristics under complex mountain conditions, which can optimize the boundary conditions required for numerical simulation through the wind acceleration ratio and, at the same time, couple the numerical simulation and wind measurement data to reflect the real mountain flow field distribution. The results show that the proposed method has good applicability in complex mountain wind farms, can reproduce the real flow field distribution, and has a certain practical value. Wind speed distribution and turbulence intensity are greatly affected by boundary conditions such as wind speed and wind direction and are also affected by the shielding effect brought by terrain changes. The contrast between 120° and 150° wind direction is more obvious. When the incoming wind moves to the top of a mountain or the ridgeline, it will form a low-speed wake area behind it, resulting in reduced wind speed, increased turbulence intensity, and an unstable flow field.

Abstract:The responses of the atmospheric boundary layer at low latitudes (20 degrees N) to forcing by an ocean-mesoscale sea surface temperature (SST) front are investigated under the conditions that the background wind intersects with the SST front (i.e., there are cross-frontal and along-frontal wind components) through ideal numerical experiments. The simulation results show that the responses of the atmospheric boundary layer are sensitive to the background wind speed and its direction relative to the SST front. The type of convergence and divergence of Ekman transport and that of the background wind can be constructive or destructive, depending on the relative orientation of the background wind and the SST front. When the two kinds of convergence and divergence are constructive, they can cause strong convergence and divergence in the boundary layer near the SST front; further, the unbalanced state forced over the SST front will excite inertial gravity waves propagating into the free atmosphere. The vertical velocity excited in this case is much greater than that when there is only a cross-frontal background wind component with an equivalent magnitude. On the contrary, when the two kinds of convergence and divergence are destructive, the resultants of convergence and divergence are reduced significantly, and the interaction between the boundary layer and the aloft atmosphere decays rapidly with height. The significance of the results obtained for the analysis of coastal precipitation are discussed.

Abstract:Based on the gradient-wind momentum approximation(GRMA),the balance among five forces is established which includes: the pressure-gradient force,the Coriolis force,the frictional force,the centrifugal force,and the inertial deviation.The analytic solutions which describe the characteristics of the tropical cyclone boundary layer are obtained under cylindrical coordinates.The three dimensional bell-shaped mountain and two dimensional bell-shaped mountain are studied principally.The numerical repeting results indicate that,motion in the boundary layer of the tropical cyclone is controlled by the eddy viscosity and mountain simultaneously.Two dimensional bell-shaped mountain has more evident impact on the vertical velocity,radial velocity,and streamlines when compared with three dimensional bell-shaped mountain.The misalignment of the centers of tropical cyclone and mountain leads to the asymmetric structure of the wind-field.The dipolar-structural vertical velocity forms at the north-west side of the mountain.

Abstract:Topography-induced potential vorticity (PV) banners over a mesoscale topography (Dabie Mountain, hereafter DM) in eastern China, under an idealized dry adiabatic flow, are studied with a mesoscale numerical model, ARPS. PV banners generate over the leeside of the DM with a maximal intensity of ∼1.5 PVU, and extend more than 100 km downstream, while the width varies from several to tens of kilometers, which contrasts with the half-width of the peaks along the ridge of the DM.
A Study of Evolution and Dynamics of Urban Atmospheric Mixing-Layer Depth Based on Lidar Data and Numerical Simulation

Abstract:Mixing-layer depth and entrainment zone thickness are extracted from micro pulse lidar data sets measured at Peking University when surface wind is mainly from the south.The estimated values of the normalized entrainment zone depth are plotted versus an entrainment Richardson number,resulting in a good ordering of the data and agreement with the parameterization proposed in a study by Gryning and Batchvarova.The evolution and dynamics of mixing-layer over urban area under simply meteorological conditions are studied using a simple well-mixed boundary layer theory and the entrainment flux ratio(which is often used to simulate entrainment in atmospheric boundary-layer models) with an empirical relationship which is calculated from these two quantities.This ratio is generally believed to be 0.24 under equilibrium conditions,but is highly variable during the morning and evening hours.Regional surface fluxes of sensible heat are retrieved based on a traditional thermodynamic model without mechanical mixture effects from the time series.The cause for differences between retrieval result and actual measurement(with a correlation coefficient of 0.79) are discussed.It is the differences that make the quantification of the parameter B for mechanical turbulence production possible.A value of 3.5 is confirmed from the result of GB91 numerical simulation.Preliminary analysis indicates both convective and mechanical turbulence,which can be interpreted qualitatively by parameters A and B,contribute to the growth process,in which the importance of every parameter can be estimated when the difference in retrieved surface fluxes of sensible heat is growing rapidly.In this study,five experiments are available for evaluating the simulation of the growth of the mixed layer.When the model adopts the effect of vertical motions induced by convergence or divergence in the large-scale flow field,realistic mixed layer developments with urban underground are obtained.

Abstract:In the paper, the turbulent dissipation is considered in the model for studying the flow over mountains. The governing equation is a first order ordinary differential equation derived from an algebraic equation without dissipation case. The solution is sensitive to the upstream condition of dissipation. The dissipation not only reduces the strength of discontinuity but also changes the properties of the governing equation. In the paper, the qualitative characteristic features of the governing equation are discussed. The numerical results with super and sub-critical cases are also discussed in detail. The results show that the turbulent dissipation is an important factor and is not negligible.
Atmospheric-Boundary-Layer-Height Variation over Mountainous and Urban Sites in Beijing as Derived from Radar Wind-Profiler Measurements

Abstract:The evolution of the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) varies greatly with terrain, so that the spatial and temporal variabilities of the ABL height remain poorly understood over complex terrain. Using radar wind-profiler measurements obtained from rural mountainous (Yanqing) and adjoining urban-plain (Haidian) landscapes of Beijing, China in 2019, ABL heights are calculated based on a normalized signal-to-noise-ratio threshold. The seasonally contrasting features of ABL height variation and growth rate over the two sites are revealed for clear-sky conditions. Interestingly, the ABL in spring remains suppressed during the morning and evolves rapidly in the afternoon over Haidian; however, a usual diurnal ABL evolution is observed over Yanqing. During the winter, more rapid evolution of the ABL is observed over Haidian, although on average the daytime ABL height remains less than 800 m above ground level. The growth rate of ABL height is found to undergo a more pronounced seasonal variation over Haidian while being relatively less variable over Yanqing. As expected, the lowest (highest) growth rate of 90 m h−1 (188 m h−1) occurs in winter (summer) over Haidian. The analysis of the seasonal variations in wind profiles reveals deeper insights into the development of the local plain-to-mountain flow circulation over the region and possible implications on the contrasting seasonal ABL variations, particularly during the spring and summer. Additionally, the slower ABL evolution over Haidian in autumn and winter could be associated with an aerosol-induced stable ABL as well as stronger urban heat accumulation. The findings have implications for the better understanding of air pollution meteorology in regions with mountainous terrain.

Numerical Simulation on Stratified Flow over an Isolated Mountain Ridge

Abstract:The characteristics of stratified flow over an isolated mountain ridge have been investigated numerically. The two-dimensional model equations, based on the time-dependent Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equations, are solved numerically using an implicit time integration in a fitted body grid arrangement to simulate stratified flow over an isolated ideally bell-shaped mountain. The simulation results are in good agreement with the existing corresponding analytical and approximate solutions. It is shown that for atmospheric conditions where non-hydrostatic effects become dominant, the model is able to reproduce typical flow features. The dispersion characteristics of gaseous pollutants in the stratified flow have also been studied. The dispersion patterns for two typical atmospheric conditions are compared. The results show that the presence of a gravity wave causes vertical stratification of the pollutant concentration and affects the diffusive characteristics of the pollutants.

Abstract:The influences of the Tibetan Plateau and the Rocky Mountains on diurnal variations of the meteorological fields in July are investigated by use of a five-layer global atmospheric general circulation model which includes various physical processes, including diurnal variation of solar radiation and real topography. In this paper, a brief description of the model is given first and then we emphatically discuss the results by comparatively analysing the influences of the Tibetan Plateau and the Rocky Mountains on diurnal changes of temperature, the geopotential height, the horizontal and the vertical flows, as well as the vertical circulations in summer. The comparative analyses show that there are very prominent diurnal variations of temperature, geopotential height, wind fields and vertical circulations in the mountainous regions, the amplitudes of their variations are proportional to the scales of topography.
Development and applications of a fine urban boundary layer model

Abstract:A fine urban boundary layer model has been developed in the paper,which is based on the characteristics of town and the original coarse-resolution regional boundary layer model as well.It is a three-dimensional nonhydrostatic diagnostic numerical model in the terrain-following coordinate system.The E-ε closure scheme was used in the model.Compared with the former model,the new model shows differences in the following aspects: 1) the moisture process,2) heat roughness length,3) the contribution of urban anthropogenic heat to urban surface energy balance and its impact on urban heat island,4) the dynamical drag effect of the urban buildings.Two cases were simulated by this new developed model.One is for the southeast region of Beijing city whose area is 12 km×18 km and the other one is for a satellite town which is only 10.5 km×6.7 km in size.The simulated results of near surface temperature,wind speed and specific humidity are in reasonable agreement with the observational results of automatic weather stations,and they actually reflect the diurnal variation of the meteorological environment.The fraction mean bias of near surface temperature is only 0.02,0.13 and 0.09 for wind speed and specific humidity respectively.In this study the diurnal variation of the meteorological environment is diagnosed and analyzed.The different properties of meteorological environment and surface energy balance between the urban and the rural area are also analyzed.

Abstract:The flow over mountain is quite complicated. There are a lot of papers on this problem and a lot of progresses have been made. However, in the most of these papers, just the dynamics contributions of mountain have been analysed; the effect of the friction is often neglected. Since the frictional effect is always associated with flow, especially when it flows over the mountain. The study shows that the friction is small in the magnitude but it is not a negligible effect because it changes the features of the flow. In the case of super- or sub-critical flow, there are two extremes: one maximum, one minimum of the fluid surface on the lee-side of themountain, while in the inviscid fluid, there is just one extreme. The frictional effect should neither be too strong nor too weak to make the situation happened according to the investigation of this paper.
The Ekman Boundary Layer over Orography: an Analysis of Vertical Motion

Abstract:A model of the planetary boundary layer is used to determine the field of vertical motion over large-scale orography. This model represents Ekman boundary-layer dynamics modified by the inclusion of accelerations of the geostrophic wind under the geostrophic momentum approximation. The orography is represented by a circular mountain. The inviscid solution is provided by the sum of a constant translation and a steady, uniform potential vorticity, anticyclonic vortex. The boundary-layer solution vanishes on the mountain, but is matched to the inviscid solution as the top of the boundary layer is approached. The vertical velocity field at the top of the boundary layer is determined by integration of the continuity equation. The field of motion is largely determined by descent from above into the anticyclonic circulation, as in the classical Ekman model. Contributions that arise from the inclusion of accelerations are associated with boundary-layer advection and ageostrophic divergence that produce vorticity tendencies. Finally, the boundary-layer vertical motion is shown to be comparable in magnitude to the vertical motion forced by inviscid flow over the orography, although the distributions of each are significantly different. Effects of mountain asymmetry and a changing pressure field, that can be treated more fully by numerical model simulations, are not considered in the present study.

Abstract:To explore the influence of complex terrain on wind characteristics of the surface layer and to better develop and utilize wind energy resources of high-altitude regions in central and western China, two typical topographies: the Qiaodi Village in Sichuan (in western China, site 1) and the Nanhua Mountain in Shanxi (in central China, site 2), were selected for this study. The diurnal and monthly variations of the atmospheric stability were contrasted at the two sites, according to the Obukhov length calculated by the eddy covariance data. The energy exchange process between complex underlying surfaces and the atmospheric boundary layer can be reflected to a certain extent by investigating the diurnal variation differences of the turbulent fluxes at the two sites. The results show that: (1) the dominant boundary layer at site 1 during nighttime is the neutral boundary layer, while at site 2 it is the stable; (2) the horizontal wind speed at 10 m above the ground is the highest (lowest) in the neutral (unstable) boundary layer at site 1, while it is the highest (lowest) in the neutral and weak-unstable (stable) boundary layer at site 2, and (3) the momentum flux, sensible heat flux, and latent heat flux all show unimodal diurnal characteristics. There is a 1 h lag in the flux peak at site 1 compared to site 2.
