Abstract:The new requirements of metropolitan area networks (MAN) have resulted in the emergence of a new data transport technology, the resilient packet ring (RPR). The fairness is one of the key technologies in RPR. Since traditional definitions of fairness are not applicable to RPR, a fairness concept based upon the ingress aggregated flow was defined for RPR. The fairness algorithm described in the draft of the IEEE standard for RPR was then analyzed. Fairness problems with unbalanced data streams were overcome with an improved fairness algorithm named RPR-NIA which achieves better performance. Simulation results showed that the throughput of the oscillating node with the RPR-NIA algorithm was increased by 13.4% compared with the algorithm defined in the IEEE standard draft. The RPR-NIA algorithm can also implement fairness between nodes with multiple congested nodes in the ring.

Abstract:Resilient packet ring(RPR) is a new kind of metropolitan area network technology which has fast automatic protection switching ability. Fairness algorithm is a key technology of RPR. Current fairness algorithms can not get high bandwidth utilization and suffer from permanent oscillations under unbalanced conditions. A new fairness algorithm based on deficit round robin(FBDRR) is presented in the paper. It's ideal model based on GPS scheduling algorithm is proved to be RIAS fair. Analysis and simulations prove that FBDRR can solve oscillation problems, fairly allocate bandwidth and converge very quickly.

Abstract:Issues related to fair sharing of bandwidth in Assured Forwarding based Differentiated Services networks have been discussed in many research papers. The factors that can bias fair sharing of bandwidth are Round trip time (RTT), packet size, the number of flows in aggregate and target rate etc. This paper proposes a new scheme to achieve proportional fair sharing of bandwidth among heterogeneous TCP flows for Assured Service. The Assured Services architecture relies on packet marking mechanism at the edge router, and AQM mechanism at the core router. In the new scheme the marking mechanism is FTSW2CM, which is based on TSW2CM algorithm. By measuring local throughput FTSW2CM can change the marking probability to achieve fairness. As to AQM mechanism we use MRIO algorithm, which can effectively stabilize the queue size and mitigate the "band-width skew" problem. The simulation results indicate that FTSW2CM+MRIO performs better than other popular schemes in providing fairness among heterogeneous TCP flows.

Abstract:The Bandwidth Broker proposed to manage the resources for DiffServ networks has two ways to implement, namely centralized and distributed approach. The distributed Bandwidth Broker offers scalability advantages over the centralized one, but the improper pre-compute of resource will make its bandwidth allocation unfair. The solution to this issue is characterized by a new fairness criterion, multi-path max-min fairness. In this paper, we generalize single-path max-min fairness to multi-path, and show that the multi-path max-min fairness allocation is relevant to bottleneck links. Based on multi-path max-min fairness, we propose a new resource management algorithm for the distributed Bandwidth Broker scheme. The experiment results show that our resource management algorithm is better than previous one from the aspect of fairness.

Abstract:This paper analyzes the factors which affect the fairness between TFRC protocol and TCP protocol,and introduces two weighted coefficients to calculate the packet loss event rate which is used to calculate the sending rate in equation of TFRC protocol so as to adjust the sending rate based on network congestion level.Simulation results show that through this method,the fairness and smoothness of TFRC at different congestion levels are effectively improved,thus meeting the requirements of multimedia stream more effectively.

Abstract:Distributed defense of DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack has been extensively researched in recent years and control-based defense is a hopeful way. However, existed methods only deal with bandwidth protection. The paper takes defense of DDoS flood as a kind of Processing and Bandwidth Resources allocation and solves it using control theory. Our defense mechanism FFDRF (Feedback Filtering with Dual-Resource Fairness) sets up filters in edge routers of AS and adjusts the filtering thresholds through feedback between these routers and the victim. The simulation results show that FFDRF can make the legitimate traffic keep high survival rate while is stable and converges quickly even in case of heterogeneous flow sources and link conditions. Compared with level-k max-min fairness defense, FFDRF is more effective against CPU-consuming flood. And an implementation of FFDRF in a linux router indicates that FFDRF is feasible in real-life routers. © 2008 IEEE.
A TCP-Friendly Fair Packet Marking Algorithm in DiffServ

Abstract:Researchers found unfairness in DiffServ network. To solve this problem, a TSW-based marker is proposed, which is called TCP-friendly fair packet marking algorithm (TFPM). With this marker, proportional fair sharing of excess bandwidth among aggregate can be achieved, and so the better fairness between TCP and UDP flows in an aggregate. The validation of this marking algorithm through simulation experimentation is made, and the simulation result is compared with some other marking algorithms, which verifies that the TFPM algorithm has better fairness than other algorithms.
Congestion Control Algorithm for Resilient Packet Ring

Abstract:In this paper, one congestion-point oriented congestion control algorithm for resilient packet ring is proposed. By using deficit round robin scheduling algorithm and non-linear adjustment of control gain via the explicit feedback information about the explicit rate and the virtual queueing delay, this algorithm can promise fairness, fast convergence, low memory requirement and smooth equilibrium behavior. This algorithm also avoids the difficulty of estimating the number of active flows when calculating the explicit rate, thus decreases the implementation complexity greatly. This algorithm is not sensitive to the loss of congestion control packets and can adapt to a wide range of link rates and network scale. This congestion control algorithm can be implemented on the multi-access control layer of resilient packet ring.

Abstract:Resilient Packet Ring (RPR) is a new technology currently being standardized in the IEEE 802.17 working group. The existed bandwidth allocation algorithms for RPR networks are not able to provide satisfactory solutions to meet the performance requirements. In this paper we propose one fair bandwidth allocation algorithm, termed PID-RPR, which satisfies the performance goals of RPR networks, such as fairness, high utilization and maximal spatial reuse. The algorithm is operated at each RPR node in a distributive way; the proportional, integral and differential (PID) controller is used to allocate bandwidth on the outgoing link of the node for the flows over the link in a weighted manner. To achieve the global coordination, one control packet containing every node's message runs around the ring in order to update the relevant message for all nodes on the ring. When the packet reaches one node, this node adjusts its own rate according to its own message in the control packet; in the meantime it updates other nodes' control message in the control packet. As the control packet propagates around the ring, each node can eventually adjust its sending rate to reach its fair share according to the fairness criterion, and the buffer occupancy at each node is kept within the target value. Our algorithm is of distributed nature in the sense that upstream ring nodes inject traffic at a rate according to congestion and fairness criteria downstream. The simulation results demonstrate that satisfactory performance of RPR networks can be achieved under the proposed bandwidth allocation scheme.

Abstract:To resolve the difficulty of fair packet scheduling caused by bandwidth uneven distribution with time slot(BUDTS) in adaptive modulation wireless system,a novel fair packet scheduling algorithm,maximum rate scheduling with fairness constraint(MRSFC),was proposed.With the service fairness index guaranteed within a certain bound,the algorithm allocates channel to the user with as higher received SNR as possible and selects appropriate modulation scheme.Instead of original Gilbert-Elliot channel model,a finite state Markov channel model was used for analysis of adaptive modulation wireless system.Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm has better performance of system throughput and spectral efficiency than the original algorithm,and that a tradeoff between fairness and spectral efficiency can be flexibly achieved in the algorithm.
An integrated self-healing algorithm for resilient packet ring

Abstract:Resilient Packet Ring (RPR) is a Media Access Control (MAC) layer protocol that operates over a double counter-rotating ring network topology. RPR is designed to enhance Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) in order to handle data traffic more efficiently. Since Intelligent Protection Switching(IPS) is one of the key technologies in ring networks, RPR provides two intelligent protection algorithms: steering and wrapping. While wrapping in RPR in essence inherits the automatic protection switching(APS) algorithm of SDH, it also wastes the bandwidth on the wrapping ringlets and may result in severe congestion. Whereas steering in RPR provides high bandwidth utilization, its switching speed is low, because it is indeed a high layer\u0027s restoration algorithm. In this paper, integrated self-healing(ISH) algorithm as an effective algorithm for RPR is proposed, which synthesizes the merits of the two algorithms by transporting healing signal and computing routing in MAC layer. At last, the performance of ISH algorithm is analyzed and simulated.
Optimizing Fairness and Blocking Probability for Optical Networks

Abstract:In the study of dynamic routing and wavelength assignment (DRWA) algorithms and protocols in optical networks, blocking probability is a chief criterion for performance evaluation. But it does not always capture the full effect of a particular algorithm on other aspects, such as fairness problem, which refers to the variability in blocking probabilities experienced by connection requests between various node pairs. Most commercial routing protocols, such as OSPF, prefers to adopt the shortest path for a particular connection, also brings unfairness to diverse connection requests, and such an unfairness becomes more serious in optical networks without wavelength conversion due to wavelength continuity constraint. Some literature have concerned this fairness problem and proposed several fairness enhancement methods. But unfortunately, they will deteriorate the overall blocking probability. In this paper, we try to optimize the fairness and blocking probability simultaneously via the alternate routing strategy, and a novel classified alternate routing (CAR) approach will be adopted. In our investigations, we will consider the optimization of alternate path set determination strategy, wavelength assignment and path selection method, and link weight function, etc. Comparisons and collaborations with formerly proposed fairness enhancement methods will be also presented.

Abstract:An efficient power allocation algorithm for OFDMA-based cognitive radio (CR) systems with the total power limitation, interference constraint, and proportional fairness requirement is proposed. While solving the optimization problem with multiple constraints is computationally infeasible, we exploit the structure of the nonlinear equations to obtain an approximate solution. It can fairly allocate power among the second users (SUs) with significantly reduced complexity. Furthermore, we replace the traditional water-filling (WF) algorithm with a much faster alternative that can avoid repeated iterations to facilitate subcarrier power allocation within a single SU. Simulation results show the proposed algorithm can maintain a higher capacity, while effectively ensure the fairness among SUs compared with the referenced algorithms.

Abstract:Computing-networking integration takes computing as the center and networking as the foundation,connects heterogeneous computing nodes through the network, and realizes the efficient allocation and scheduling of computing-networking resources. The fairness of resource sharing among competing flows is an important research direction of computing-networking integration. As typical scenarios, video applications are becoming more and more important, but little is known about whether and how much they adhere to the fairness principle. Given the highly diversified network environment and the shortage of automated measurement tools, fairness measurement study entails significant challenges. We investigate this problem by measuring the competing behaviors of typical video application（i.e., Zoom）, and find that, resource competition behaviors are complex and transient, and Zoom has its own selfish behaviors in different operation scenarios. To take a deep dive into these competitive behaviors, we develop automated tools and conduct measurement to understand its QoE（quality of experience）, including end-toend video/voice delay, video frame rate, and video quality. We discover that the strategies of seizing bandwidth are used by Zoom to ensure its own QoE. In the pursuit of better QoE, Zoom tends to selfishly send excessively redundant packets to cope with abnormal network conditions, some of which are not necessary. To this end, it is important to specify a transport algorithm which is able to balance between QoE and fairness goals. We then present the design of QLibra, and demonstrate that it can effectively ensure the QoE and behave harmlessly to competing flows.

Abstract:Proportional fairness (PF) scheduling achieves a balanced tradeoff between throughput and fairness and has attracted great attention recently. However, most previous work on PF only considers the single cell scenario. This paper focuses on the problem of achieving network-wide PF in a generalized multiple base station multiple user network. The problem is formulated as a maximization model and solved using the dual method. By decomposing the dual objective function, we get a distributed pricing based algorithm. Optimality of this algorithm is presented. Although the algorithm is derived using fixed link rate assumption, it can still apply in the presence of time-varying rates. The proposed algorithm is suitable for distributed systems in the sense that it does not need any inter base station communication at all. Simulations illustrate that the proposed distributed network-wide PF scheduling algorithm achieves almost the same performance as the centralized one. Compared with traditional local PF (LPF) scheduling, the network-wide PF scheduling achieves higher throughput, lower throughput oscillation, and greater fairness. R-PFC: Enhancing RDMA Network with Restricted and Fine-grained PFC

Abstract:RDMA over Converged Ethernet (RoCE) has been widely used in datacenter networks and it relies on Priority Flow Control (PFC) to ensure a lossless network. However, PFC brings certain side effects, such as Head-of-Line (HoL) blocking, congestion spreading, and deadlock. Existing solutions demonstrate inherent limitations: either fail to completely eliminate the adverse impacts of PFC or introduce extra challenges. In light of these observations, this paper proposes a novel and practical scheme, Restricted Priority Flow Control (R-PFC). R-PFC consists of two parts: one-hop PFC and Virtual Next Output Queue (VNOQ). Instead of passively regarding PFC as a tool to guarantee a lossless network, one-hop PFC proactively employs PFC in a restrictive manner to minimize packet loss while limiting the spread of congestion within one hop. To further enhance the one-hop PFC, the fine-grained VNOQ solves the HoL blocking issue. We theoretically prove that R-PFC does not lead to deadlock and evaluate the performance of R-PFC under typical datacenter network scenarios in ns3 simulations. The results show that R-PFC outperforms both lossless and lossy networks by 43.76% and 39.46% on average.
