Abstract:To investigate effects of calcium on chlorophyll and antioxidant systems in Phragmite ausralis under cadmium stress,a solution culture experiment was conducted on seedlings of Phragmite ausralis, which is a kind of very useful economic plant in China.10 mmol·L-1 Ca2+(Ca(NO3)2)was added to medium, with different concentrations of Cd2+:0.2,0.4,0.6 mmol·L-1.The results indicated with the increasing of added Cd2+ concentrations from 0 to 0.6 mmol·L-1,the total amounts of chlorophyll in leaves of Phragmite ausralis seedlings were linearly decreased, but applying 10 mmol·L-1 Ca2+ generally increased chlorophyll content in seedlings. The severed lipid peroxidation observed in Cd treated seedlings was reverted by Ca2+ treatment.Ca2+ prevented Cd-induced increasing of the activity of superoxide dismutase(SOD)and restored catalase(CAT)activity.Peroxidase(POD)was scarcely affected by the metal, and Ca2+ produced no remarkable effect on its activities. These results suggested that the exogenous application of Ca2+ could be advantageous against Cd2+ toxicity, and could confer tolerance to heavy metal stress in plants.
