Abstract:Objective To investigate the serum adiponectin concentration and insulin resistance in related to NAFLD and its metabolic disorders in elderly people. Methods A total of 89 NAFLD patients with metabolic disorders (hypertension or fasting hyperglycemia), 95 patients with NAFLD, and 80 healthy controls were studied. Abdominal ultrasound was taken for fatty liver examination. Anthropometric and biochemical variables were measured by routine methods. Serum adiponectin and insulin levels were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and radioimmunoassay. Insulin resistance indexes were assessed by HOMA-IR. Results The BMI, TC, TG, FBS, ALT level, fasting insulin and HOMA were significantly increased in aged NAFLD patients, while serum adiponectin concentration was significantly decreased, and even more serious in those with metabolic disorders. The extent of insulin resistance of aged NAFLD individuals was obvious. Obesity in elderly people and young NAFLD individuals were prone to suffer from abnormal ALT. Furthermore, BMI, gender and HOMA were independent determinants of adiponectin in multiple regression models. Conclusion Elderly NAFLD patients and their metabolic disorders were associated with hypoadiponectinmia and insulin resistance.
