Abstract:In this paper a practical and fast R waves detection algorithm based on DSP processor is proposed.According to the characteristics of R waves in ECG and the principle of length transformation,calculations of difference plus sliding window integration are applied to the ECG data.Then detection threshold and blind area are dynamically adjusted according to characteristics of ECG signals.This real time detection algorithm,which can be implemented on a DSP processor of TI company,has good detectability for R waves.By means of detection of typical ECG data of MIT BIH database,it can be shown that the algorithm can meet requirements of ECG data anlysis.
The Strategy of T Wave Detection and QT Interval Extraction

Abstract:This paper introduced a new strategy of LSE-based T wave detection and QT interval extraction. Based on the detected offset and onset of QRS complexes by the detection algorithm, The LSE of sixteen point linear segments from offset was calculated forward. The peak or valley of T wave was detected under a window determined by LSE and then decided an R point and R regression line on LSE. The offset of T wave was determined by the deviation that before R point between ECG data and the R regression line. Thus the QT interval was extracted. The strategy was verified by all the records from QT database, in which 3 542 T wave offsets was marked by cardiologists, and reached the 98.2% of T wave detection ratio, the 97.2% of QT interval extraction precision and the average error of 1.0ms on QT interval extraction.

Abstract:As one of the important components of electrocardiogram (ECG) signals, QRS signal represents the basic characteristics of ECG signals. The detection of QRS waves is also an essential step for ECG signal analysis. In order to further meet the clinical needs for the accuracy and real-time detection of QRS waves, a simple, fast, reliable, and hardware-friendly algorithm for real-time QRS detection is proposed. The exponential transform (ET) and proportional-derivative (PD) control-based adaptive threshold are designed to detect QRS-complex. The proposed ET can effectively narrow the magnitude difference of QRS peaks, and the PD control-based method can adaptively adjust the current threshold for QRS detection according to thresholds of previous two windows and predefined minimal threshold. The ECG signals from MIT-BIH databases are used to evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm. The overall sensitivity, positive predictivity, and accuracy for QRS detection are 99.90%, 99.92%, and 99.82%, respectively. It is also implemented on Altera Cyclone V 5CSEMA5F31C6 Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA). The time consumed for a 30-min ECG record is approximately 1.3 s. It indicates that the proposed algorithm can be used for wearable heart rate monitoring and automatic ECG analysis.

Abstract:Waveform detection is the basis for automatic analysis of ECG signals, and the detection accuracy has an important effect on the assay performance. In a cardiac cycle, R wave characteristics are very obvious and easy to identify, so most researchers take ECG R wave detection as the foundation of feature extraction. This paper studies the principle of ECG R wave detection and carries out an in-depth discussion on some key technologies. As a result, an intelligent algorithm of R wave detection is proposed. The algorithm uses filter, multi-order difference and Shannon energy transformation to process ECG signals, and then it adopts an improved adaptive threshold method for detecting R waves. The author used ECG data files from the MIT-BIH arrhythmia database (mitdb) to measure the performance of the algorithm. Overall, the experiment obtained 99.84% sensitivity and 99.92% precision of R wave detection, while the error rate is only 0.24%. Experiments show that, this algorithm could be also applied for R wave real-time detection under the requirements of high accuracy and low error rate.

Abstract:Electrocardiogram (ECG) contains a large amount of information on physiological and pathological of human body. In a complete cardiac cycle, P, QRS complex and T waves are included, which correspond to the electrical activity of the heart respectively. As an important part of ECG signal processing, characteristic points detection algorithm is of great significance in the calculation and analysis of cardiac-specific parameters in heart disease analysis and heart monitoring system. In order to realize real-time detection of P, QRS complex and T waves, this paper proposes a novel algorithm, which is based on choosing the optimal bandwidth-band pass filter and mainly uses the peak threshold method to detect these waves. This filter achieves QRS complex enhancement and noise reduction simultaneously. After capturing the QRS complex, we further generate a triangular signal to cross-correlate with the main signal, P and T waves were also successfully detected This algorithm is tested on the MIT-BIH Arrhythmia database, the QT database and evaluated using MATLAB R2016b software

Abstract:This paper presents for the first time Electrocardiograph (ECG) QRS detection algorithm implemented in Application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC). The algorithm based on the dyadic wavelet transform (DYWT) multiscale-product scheme is designed especially for real-time biomedical signal processing applications. The algorithm is evaluated based on the MIT-BIH database and achieves a sensitivity of 99.63% and a positive predictivity of 99.89% of R-waves detection. The results show that the algorithm outperforms several well-known QRS complex detection algorithms. The proposed algorithm is then implemented in ASIC and fabricated with 0.18-mu m CMOS technology and it consumes 176 mu W at an operating frequency of 1 MHz with a supply voltage of 1.8 V.

Abstract:This paper presents a low power electrocardiogram (ECG) signal processing application specific integrated circuit (ASIC) chip for real-time and reliable detection of heart rate (HR). At a sampling frequency of 250 Hz, the analog front-end (AFE) accurately senses and digitizes the raw ECG signal, which is then sent to the digital signal processing (DSP). In DSP, after preprocessing, the Rpeak detection and RR interval cumulative deviation detection, data will be transmitted to terminal equipment via the universal asynchronous receiver/transmitter (UART) transfer protocol. The terminal will receive instantaneous heart rate (IHR) and mean heart rate (MHR). Under 0.18um standard CMOS process, the area and power are 0.3 mm(2) and 10.9uW, respectively.

Abstract:Electrocardiogram(ECG) is an important physiological signal of the human body. It is widely used in identification and arrhythmia detection. The first step of ECG application is signal segmentation, that is, the QRS detection. An effective and real-time QRS detection algorithm is proposed in this paper. A differentiator with adjustable center frequency is used to capture the first derivative information of the frequency band of the electrocardiogram. Then Hilbert transform is used to generate the envelope of the first derivative. After that, a dual threshold method is introduced to decrease FP and FN. Finally, a more precise R wave position is determined based on derivative method. The detector is validated on MIT-BIH arrhythmia database. The result show that the proposed algorithm has a high Sensitivity of 99.87%, Specificity of 99.84%, and the detection error rate is 0.28%. The average execution time of a 30 minutes record is 2.45s.

Abstract:Cardiovascular disease, which is one of the most dangerous diseases in modern medicine, has become a threat to people's health. ECG is a kind of information that can reflect the physiological characteristics of human heart. With the development of modern technology, achieving ECG for health monitoring in the wearable hardware has become increasingly popular. The detection of R-peak is very important in ECG signal processing. This paper presents a low complexity r-peak detection algorithm , which is suitable for ASIC implementation. First of all, the algorithm use digital filter and envelope filter to remove the noise which is in the ECG. Then it use the Hilbert transform convert the r-peak to zero-crossing point. At last, it check the zero-crossing point to finish the R-peak detection. The algorithm is using the first-channel of the MIT-BIH arrhythmia database to test, and achieves average detection accuracy of 99.81%, sensitivity of 99.87%.
A Real-Time QRS Detection System With PR/RT Interval and ST Segment Measurements for Wearable ECG Sensors Using Parallel Delta Modulators

Abstract:This paper presents a real-time electrocardiogram (ECG) monitoring system for wearable devices. The system is based on the proposed parallel delta modulator architecture with local maximum point and local minimum point algorithms to detect QRS and PT waves. Therefore, using the proposed system and algorithm, real-time PR and RT intervals, and ST segment measurements can be achieved in long-term wearable ECG recording. The algorithm is tested with the MIT-BIH Arrhythmia Database for QRS complex detection and with the QT Database for the P and T wave detections. The simulation result shows that the algorithm achieves above 99%, 91%, and 98% accuracy in the QRS complex, P wave, and T wave detections, respectively. Experimental results are presented from the system prototype, in which the parallel delta modulator circuits are fabricated in IBM 0.13 $\mu \text{m}$ standard CMOS technology and the algorithms are implemented in a Xilinx Spartan-6 field programmable gate array (FPGA). The parallel delta modulators consume 720 nW at 1 kHz sampling rate with $\pm$0.6 V power supply. The proposed system has the potential to be applied in future long-term wearable ECG recording devices.

Abstract:In order to detect the QRS complexes locally in the microcontroller-based embedded system, a novel algorithm with lower computation burden is proposed by phase space reconstruction and box-scoring calculation. The method depends on the geometrical property of the ECG signal phase portraits. According to the time-delay method, one segment of the sampled 1-D ECG signal is embedded into a 2-D phase space. The phase space is divided into 2(M) x 2(M) grids, and each grid is called a box. The box gridding is implemented by numerically truncating the high M-bits from the digital data. The phase portraits of the sampled ECG signal in the phase space are therefore divided by these boxes. Since the trajectory points corresponding to the R-waves are located relatively far away from the diagonal line, boxes that crossed by the trajectory are flagged and valued according to its distance to the diagonal line. Correspondingly, the box-scoring of the ECG segment is obtained by summarizing the values of the flagged boxes. The location of the R-waves can then be found by finding peak values in the box-scoring time series. The proposed algorithm is suitable for real-time QRS complex detection in microcontroller-based wearable ECG acquisition devices.
A 410-nW Efficient QRS Processor for Mobile ECG Monitoring in 0.18-μm CMOS

Abstract:This paper proposes a low power and efficient QRS processor for real-time and continuous mobile ECG monitoring. The QRS detector contains the wavelet transform (WT), the modulus maxima pair identification (MMPI), and the R position modification (RPM). In order to reduce power consumption, we choose the Haar function as the mother wavelet of WT. It is implemented by an optimized FIR filter structure where none of the multiplier is used. The MMPI processes the wavelet coefficients at scale 24 and provides candidate R peak positions for the RPM. To improve the accuracy and robust performance, a number of modules have been designed in MMPI, including the preprocessing unit, the automatic threshold updating, and the decision state machine. The RPM is designed to eliminate digital time delay in wavelet transform and locate the R peak position precisely. Raw ECG signals and QRS detection results are output simultaneously. Fabricated in 0.18-μm N-well CMOS 1P6M technology, the power consumption of this chip is only about 410 nW in 1 V voltage supply. Validated by all 48 sets of data in the MIT-BIH arrhythmia database, the sensitive and the positive prediction are 99.60% and 99.77% respectively.

Abstract:This work presents a power efficient QRS detection processor with self-adjustable processing resolution. As reducing the resolution of electrocardiogram (ECG) data in certain degree has little effect on the detection accuracy but helps cut down the calculation power, a total of eight processing resolutions are supported in the processor, which can bring different levels of dynamic power reduction. The processing resolution is scaled adaptively based on the QRS detection result to achieve optimized energy efficiency and guarantee acceptable detection performance. The processor is implemented in SMIC 40 nm CMOS technology and has a total area of 5655 um(2). When tested on MIT-BIH arrhythmia database with 50MHz operating frequency and 0.9V voltage supply, its power consumption is 77.7uW, which is reduced by 27.4% compared to the original processor, while the area is only increased by 6.7%. And it also achieves relatively high detection result, with an average sensitivity of 98.63% and positive prediction of 98.86%.

Abstract:QRS detection is a crucial step in analyzing the electrocardiogram (ECG). For ECG collected by wearable devices, a robust QRS detection algorithm that yields high accuracy in spite of abnormal QRS morphologies and severe noise is needed. In this paper, we propose a QRS detection method based on high-resolution wavelet packet decomposition (HR-WPD) and convolutional neural network (CNN). Firstly, we design the HR-WPD that decomposes the ECG into multiple signals with different frequency bands to provide detailed QRS features. Secondly, all the decomposed signals are forwarded to a CNN for comprehensive morphology analysis and QRS prediction. To further improve the robustness, a time-attention module acting on the input signals is added to the CNN. Finally, a variable threshold is imposed to locate the QRS. The proposed method is validated by using two noisy databases (i.e., Telehealth Database (TELEDB) and MIT-BIH Noise Stress Test Database (NSTDB)) and one database with multiple ECG morphologies (i.e., MIT-BIH Arrhythmia Database (ARRDB)). The experiment results show that the proposed method achieves a comparable or even better performance compared with state-of-art methods on the TELEDB (SE 98.99%, P+ 95.57%, ER 5.61%, F1 97.25%), NSTDB (SE 99.25%, P+ 96.31%, ER 4.55%, F1 97.76%) and ARRDB (SE 99.89%, P+ 99.90%, ER 0.21%, F1 99.89%), suggesting that it is highly applicable to the QRS detection for ECG collected by wearable devices.

Abstract:As a crucial part of electrocardiogram (ECG) signal processing, the R-peak detection algorithm is important for the calculation and analysis of cardiac-specific parameters in heart health monitoring and heart disease diagnosis. To achieve high-quality R-peak detection, this paper proposes a novel algorithm consisting of four parts. The digital filtering is used to remove noise interference. The Shannon energy envelope is adopted to achieve QRS complexes enhancement and noise reduction simultaneously. The curve length transformation based on window division is used to suppress pseudo R-peaks. The Hilbert transform achieves no threshold settings and no prior knowledge of detected R-peaks. The algorithm is evaluated by using the MIT-BIH arrhythmia database and achieves average detection accuracy of 99.86%, precision of 99.97%, recall of 99.89%.

Abstract:Heartbeat classification and R-wave location have been widely used to detect people's health condition. And battery-power devices are mainly applied to wearable scenario, which can monitor people's health all day long, so high energy efficiency is very important under such circumstance. This paper proposes an improved DWT (Discrete Wavelet Transform) algorithm to obtain time-frequency characteristics of adaptive sampling ECG signals to locate the R-waves and compute RR-intervals, and further applies KNN (K-Nearest Neighbor) as a classifier to classify heartbeats, then presents a power-efficient VLSI architecture for the proposed algorithms. Experiments with the MIT-B111 Database show that the proposed DWT algorithm obtains Se (sensitivity) of 96.29% and Pp (positive predictive) of 90.26% compared to 66.44% and 70.43% respectively by the original DWT algorithm under noise level of SNR=8.And the accuracy of the heartbeat classification is 87.7%. The VLSI is implemented using SMIC 65nm CMOS technology and the power consumption is 112.7p W at 2 alternate frequencies of 60 and 360 Hz.
