Abstract:Immediately after the May 12,2008 Great Wenchuan earthquake,the authors developed modern bamboo structure shelters in disaster relief to provide housing and classrooms for devastated regions.The modern bamboo structure shelters were designed with consideration of cost effect,earthquake resistance,inhabitability and environmental friendship.Tests were conducted and showed satisfactory results of the load carrying capacity of structural elements and air quality.Bamboo structure can be considered as a green construction,and the adoption of modern bamboo structures in disaster relief and reconstruction can take the advantage of local resources and reduce the cost.Under the support of donations from Hunan University,the authors manufactured and installed seventeen 48 m2 classrooms and three 16 m2 offices at the Beijie Elementary School,Guangyuan City,Sichuan Province.The authors also conceived design of permanent bamboo structures for reconstruction of the disaster affected regions.

Abstract:Natural heritage sites are common wealth of mankind.The protection and restoration of such sites must not be neglected in the process of reconstruction after the 5.12 Wenchuan Earthquake in Sichuan Province,China.Taking Dujiangyan city as a case study,this paper discusses the issues of protection and restoration of natural heritage sites.First,the authors,through field investigation,find out the damages to the natural heritage sites in Dujiangyan caused by the devastating earthquake.We then analyze the spatial patterns of geological hazards and ecological fragility of the Dujiangyan region.Based on the study results and the varying characteristics of different natural heritage sites,a planning framework and some feasible measures for post-earthquake reconstruction are suggested.
Damage spatial distribution and its influential factors in Dujiangyan City subjected to Wenchuan earthquake

Abstract:Base on the outcomes of seismic damage assesment in Dujiangyan City,spatial distribution of building seismic damage subjected to Wenchuan earthquake was investigated and the possible causes were analyzed with the two key factors of the spatial evolution of urban area and the spatial earthquake inputs taken into account.Firstly,urban layout and characteristics of seismic damage in Dujiangyan City were considered along the direction normal to the mountains,and the city was divided into two regions spatially by the inner ring road and the outer ring road.Then,considering that the evolution of seismic codes would cause remarkable changes on seismic performance of buildings,buildings were divided into groups in chronological order,and the seismic damages of building groups were compared spatially by each period.Finally,the influential factors of spatial urban evolvement,topographical condition,site condition and distance to fault on the spatial distribution of seismic damage were discussed.It is found that the spatial evolution of urban area is the key cause to the spatial seismic damage distribution.From the analysis,early-age buildings has up to 6.5 times higher average damage level than the new buildings.And the spatial ground motion input is also an important cause for the damage distribution.In Dujiangyan City,seismic damage in inner ring road part is significantly higher than that of the outer ring road part,with the amount of up to 1.88 times higher than the latter.This study will provide solid references for future aseismic design and damage prediction.

Abstract:By means of investigation on serious damages due to 5·12 Wenchuan Earthquake,it discussed detailed different seismic damage conditions and reasons of buildings in different seismic areas,and presented task to be solved in the future.The investigation results were found that there was less seismic damage in Chengdu,but in Dujiangyan,Mianzu,Beichuan,Yingxiu which were damaged more seriously,especially before 1990's pre-cast floor brick-concrete structure housing whose seismic damages were very serious,and most of them were faced to collapsed and no method to repair.Compared with 1990's buildings,there were less seismic damage after 2000 designed by new norms,and it concluded that codes for seismic design were basically satisfied the purpose of seismic fortification.

Abstract:According to the function of emergency and disaster-prevention of garden green land after Wenchuan earthquake,this paper takes Chengdu as a sampling point,by using questionnaire techniques and field survey to investigate the following items: the frequency of Chengdu residents' going to a park before and after the earthquake,the ways of reaching a park,the choices of asylum intention,the layout of the green lands around the residential area and their sizes,and the traffic conditions and facilities in the garden green lands in Qingyang,Jinjiang,Chenghua and Wuhou District in Chengdu.After the investigation and analysis,the results indicate that: different types of garden green lands have certain potentials for emergency shelters;the residents know less about the function of emergency and disaster-prevention of garden green land;the maintenance of shelter roads in peacetime is poor;the construction level of emergency and disaster-prevention of garden green land needs to be improved urgently and so on.The survey results have important reference significance for the construction of emergency and disaster-prevention green space of Chengdu after the earthquake.

Abstract:A devastating earthquake struck the southwestern Chinese province of Sichuan on 12 May 2008, leaving 69,227 dead and 374,643 injured, with 17,923 people still missing five months after the main event. The epicentre of the earthquake was located in Wenchuan County, which triggered a fault rupture length of about 300 km, stretching northeast through Beichuan County and reaching Qingchuan County; many towns on both sides of the fault were severely damaged/destroyed, reaching an earthquake damage intensity of XI. This paper presents the findings of a post-earthquake reconnaissance field mission carried out by the Earthquake Engineering Field Investigation Team (The Institution of Structural Engineers, UK) and by the European Laboratory for Structural Assessment of the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission, through the description of the damage sustained by three of the towns that suffered the largest levels of devastation: Yingxiu Town of Wenchuan County, Beichuan Town of Beichuan County, and Hanwang Town of Shifang City. The work focuses on the description of building performance during and after the disaster, in particular of reinforced concrete frame, reinforced concrete confined masonry, unreinforced and unconfined masonry, industrial, local vernacular and historical buildings. The information and recommendations provided in this paper will be useful for future engineering applications in similar earthquake risk regions.

Abstract:This article focused on the health system reconstruction after Wenchuan earthquake in Dujiangyan,China,and intended to provide some experience and knowledge gained.Pre-quake conditions of health system,damage caused by the earthquake,and post-quake efforts on reconstruction and outcomes achieved were presented and analyzed.After three years of post-quake reconstruction,not only no severe epidemics occurred in the disaster area,the capacity of health system was also recovered and upgraded rapidly.On the basis of the improvement in infrastructure and hardware and software facilities,the number of outpatient and emergency visits,operations,discharges,and other major indicators for health service capacity greatly improved compared to the pre-quake times.The incidence rates of Class A,B,and C infectious diseases as well as respiratory,gastro-intestinal,and arthropod-borne and natural focal infectious diseases also appeared varying degrees of declines.Compared to 2008,the life expectancy in Dujiangyan increased by 9.23 years in 2011,the infant mortality decreased 3.22‰,and the maternal mortality decreased 12.80/104.It could be justifiably concluded that the efficient and orderly post-quake reconstruction has played a huge role in enhancing the restoration of health system in Dujiangyan.

Abstract:Geological hazards such as destructive earthquake severely limit the speed and the scale of urbanization at urban scale. However, whether the historical earthquake exert persistent or temporary effects on the urbanization process at county scale also remain intertwined. The 2008 Wenchuan earthquake was an unparalleled natural disaster in China history, and the Dujiangyan county is one of the ten worst-hit counties. Taking the Dujiangyan county as a case study, we established an indexing systems for urbanization at a county scale. The urbanization level at the county scale was gauged from three dimensions including population, economy and space. The coordinate assessment indicated that the urbanization process at the scale of county had obvious phase characteristics before and after the natural disasters. The suitable post-disaster policies and measures could strengthen the coupling coordination degree among the population, economy and space at the county scale. Triangle analysis indicated the urbanization model of the Dujiangyan county was basically a shift from space-dominated to population-dominated before and after the earthquake. It's indispensable to improve the quality of geological environment to minimize the threats and losses rendered by earthquake and facilitate sustainable urbanization process at county scale.

Investigation and Analysis of Seismic Damage of Reservoirs in Guangyuan City During Wenchuan Great Earthquake

Abstract:The Wenchuan Ms8.0 earthquake,in varying degrees,has resulted in great damages and severe economic losses to the reservoirs in Guangyuan City of Sichuan Province.Investigation and analysis of the reservoirs' seismic damage were conducted on the basis of documents from the field scientific investigation of 53 seismic damage reservoirs in the city.It is found that the typical damage mainly included dam deformation,leakage,as well as the damage of discharge structures and subsidiary facilities.It could be seen that the most reservoirs ran in the disease state before earthquake.The main factors influencing the earthquake damage degree are earthquake intensity,epicentral distance,time of construction,type and geometric configuration of earth-rock dam,and the operation state of the reservoir before earthquake.The study would enrich the basic data of earthquake damage,and put forward constructive proposals to improve the seismic performance of earth-rock dam reservoirs.

Abstract:The 5.12 Wenchuan M 8.0 Earthquake caused great damage and economic losses to the reservoirs of Luojiang county in Deyang city.However,it would have made a greater loss,if the dam failure had been caused.Based on the studies on the earthquake damage to 19 high-risk reservoirs in Luojiang county,it is found that the typical damage mainly includes fracture,seepage,wave screen damage,as well as injuries of discharge structures and subsidiary facilities.According to the previous defect investigation on the earth dam of reservoir,it could be seen that the reservoirs ran in defective state before earthquake. The main factors influencing the operation of the reservoir during earthquake are poor qualities of the earth materials and earth filling,dam foundation problem,unreasonable design of dam body,ant damage,and the lack of earthquake instrumentation and so on.Based on the post-earthquake destruction pattern of earth dam of reservoir,the influence of the pre-earthquake defect on the damage is analyzed,which could provide basic data for seismic design of dam in the future.

Abstract:By using questionnaire survey data collected from approximately 2000 household interviews in five gravest disaster areas on Aug. of 2008 and Feb. of 2009,the paper studies the difference of the effects of the disaster on the victims and their its change. The result shows that Wenchuan earthquake's effects on victims vary with time,and there exits significant difference between disaster-affected population of different counties or different allocation places,disaster-affected groups with different education levels and debts,disaster-affected groups with different household economic status,and different ethnic groups.

Abstract:To know tourists risk perception and impact of disasters on tourist behavior is the first step for post-disaster tourism market recovery and tourism industry relief.This study tried to explore the relationship among tourist risk perceptions,the perception of disaster's impact on destination,tourists satisfaction,and loyalty.Taking the Jiuzhaigou as the case study area,we conducted an on-site questionnaire survey with 572 domestic tourists visiting Jiuzhaigou,a world natural heritage in earthquake-hit area,in nearly one year after the massive5.12Wenchuan earthquake.Based on a structural equation modeling and analysis, some results can be obtained as follows.(1)The less tourists perceived risk,the less they perceived negative disaster's impact on destination;the less the perceived negative disaster's impact on destination,the higher level of satisfaction with the destination;and the higher the level of tourist satisfaction,the stronger the loyalty to the destination;vice versa.(2)It was not tourists’risk perception level but the perceived impact of disaster on destination had direct influence on tourist satisfaction.The loyalty to the destination was positively related with satisfaction during both post-disaster recovery and normal periods.This investigation also concluded that,except perceived negative disaster's impact on destination,tourists’risk perception,satisfaction and loyalty varied significantly by gender and age.Therefore,the strategic priority should focus on reconstructing the destination safety image and easing tourists’risk perception,especially for women and the youth.Finally,comprehensive management recommendations and suggestions have been put forward and discussed for tourist market recovery of disaster-hit destinations.

Abstract:The reason that the Wenchuan earthquake damaged a large number of farmland,initiated mountain landslide,mud-rock flows,and other secondary disasters,resulted in a heavy lack of land,so it is urgent to make all sorts of adjustments in disaster areas.The fact that the earthquake had drastically changed the relationship between people and land,profoundly challenged Chinese current rural policy.In this paper,the author took the post- disaster reconstruction in Wolong special administrative region as an example,reflected Chinese current rural policies in farmland protection,circulation and collective construction,land planning and management,and then made some policy recommendations to satisfy the demand of the disaster areas.

Abstract:This study is a retrospective evaluation of the long-term benefits of rural housing reconstruction in Dujiangyan city (DJY) after the Wenchuan earthquake from a land unification perspective based on statistical data, field investigation, literature review, and a case study. Research shows after the Wenchuan earthquake, during rural housing reconstruction, DJY optimized land development strategies through planning guidance, promoted marketized transfers of land resources, clarified the attribution of land rights through policy support to protect the interests of disaster victims, established equilibrium in the interests of the government, market, and masses, and coordinated the functions of life, production, and ecology through categorized reconstruction. Practice proves that implementation of post-earthquake housing reconstruction, guided by land unification and land-use transformation, reshapes rural form and the rural-urban relationship, thereby facilitating rural revitalization and integrated rural-urban development.

Abstract:Rural areas around the world are increasingly exposed to natural disasters. To guide management intervention for sustainable development after natural disasters, scientists and policymakers need a better understanding of the linkages between livelihood changes after natural disasters and recovery outcomes. Despite the growing body of disaster research, systematic evaluation of the relationship between post-disaster changes in rural livelihoods and recovery outcomes is rare, largely due to the lack of relevant data. By taking advantage of the long-term data collection and research conducted in China's Wolong Nature Reserve (Wolong), we empirically evaluated livelihood changes after the catastrophic 2008 Wenchuan Earthquake and how those changes are linked to the recovery of human well-being. Our results show that households' livelihood portfolios in Wolong conspicuously changed after the earthquake and that human well-being had been recovering. However, we found most of these livelihood changes negatively affected, instead of facilitated, human well-being recovery. The enriched understanding of the linkages between post-disaster livelihood changes and recovery outcomes has important management implications for achieving Sustainable Development Goals amid natural disasters in Wolong and beyond.

Abstract:Wenchuan Earthquake caused serious damage to the dams and great economic losses.After the earthquake,a systematic investigation was carried out for 69 dams which would collapse and 310 dams which were at high risk.The typical earthquake damage to dams included crack,subsidence of dam,slip of dam slope,leakage of dam body and destruction of release works and other accessory facilities.In this paper,the distribution of earthquake-induced dam damage is shown in the zones with different seismic intensities.Finally,the analysis and summary were made for the dam damage in the earthquake.

Abstract:China suffers lots for frequency occurred earthquake,since then China government has accumulated a wealth of experience for post-disaster emergency management.The authors conducted a case study for recently happened Yushu Earthquake emergency management.Sixty-nine local residents,local public officials,wounded and social workers report their experience of post-disaster emergency management. Positive experiences,such as,government rapid response,well prepared response plan,and support from all kinds of social forces,and suggestions for improvement,such as,effectively managing and delivering fund and materials,ensuring long-term clinical treatments for the wounded,social security network construct during local rebuilding,were all discussed.
